    Black sesame latte
    Felicia Y.

Yumtastic! I got a black sesame latte and the blackened chicken sandwich The black sesame latte was everything. It was nutty and rich and wonderful for the cold day I went. I liked how the black sesame flavor was prominent but not overpowering. Could drink this for days The sandwich was on perfectly crusty bread. It could have maybe had a few more carrots. But a really minor complaint. I loved the flavors going on and the balance with some acidity

I gave them yet another try and this time I was very satisfied with my order. I guess 5th time is the charm lol! I got the Matcha croissant and the Pistachio escargot and both were delicious and huge! Could be easily shared between two people. I really liked the Pistachio escargot, the crust was crispy and the glaze was sweet while the inside was mildly savory was making it a very balanced pastry. The Matcha croissant was filled with lots gooey filling - however it tasted less earthy/nutty and more fresh/citrusy for some reason.

I'm not sure where I saw the ad, but when a 'new' bakery opens close by, it's a must stop. I saw The Bread Room was opening, right around the corner from another (very well known) bakery, High Street! I was told High Street is now the Bread Room - same owner, Ellen Yin (Fork) - it closed the little bake shop around the corner. I got 4 pastries. Chocolate croissant Cardamom Brioche Bun Kouign Amman Ginger scone with creamy carrot icing I've been warming up my pastries, cakes, etc in the oven as I've noticed it can make a BIG difference in, not only the texture, but the taste. Only 10-16 minutes at 200-250 and they taste freshly baked. Let's start with the chocolate croissant. The croissant pastry was light and very flaky; not as buttery as I might have expected. The amount of chocolate was good - there was a layer of ganache running through the middle. It was a very good croissant. Next up the Kouign Amman - I'd never heard of this pastry! It's listed as 'Smoked vanilla and Bay Leaf filled'. Hmmmm. It was the most buttery of the 4 pastries - it tasted good - but nothing special. I also got the Cardamom Brioche Bun - the buns seemed liked they were 'shining'. They were toasted a little too much - there was an underlying burnt taste to the bun. It tasted good on the inside, but the exterior compromised the flavor. I posted a picture The Bread Room posted advertising the bun - look at it, versus what I ordered. Last on the list was the Ginger scone with carrot icing. It was a very different scone - there's a ginger glaze in addition to the carrot icing - quite sweet! The scone itself has a delightful ginger taste - if you love ginger, this scone's for you. Overall, I enjoyed, but was a little disappointed with the selection of pastries. There are some very interesting and unique tastes which are influenced by Ms. Yin. I will go again and try others - I may get the brioche bun again if it's not over baked. I would get the chocolate croissant again.

This is a great bakery with a large selection of baked goods. I enjoyed the chocolate chip cookie a lot. The bread loaf was very fresh. The interior was soft and moist with a perfect crust and delicious tangy sourdough flavor.

    Yummy Coconut Lentil Soup w/Focaccia
    Jill B.

Friendly service at this nicely appointed bakery cafe. I warmed up w/delicious Coconut Lentil Soup served w/focaccia. My Black Sesame Latte tasted like a latte. Nothing to indicate there was sesame in there. Sadly, all the pastries were either burnt, stale or flavorless. Even the Seeded Roll was all crust and no soft interior. An expensive sampling. I'll stick to the Machine Shop and the Buttery.

Service was excellent, super patient as I came in with a group. They were also attentive and were the ones to first ask what we wanted. The display is clean and each item is clearly labeled with what it is and the price. The prices are not overpriced in comparison to other bakeries in the city. Juniper pear pop tart - very floral, not for the faint heart Black and white crueller - the frosting is overwhelmingly sweet Smoked vanilla and bay leaf kouign amann - would recommend Epi Sesame Baguette - would also recommend The space is beautiful, I love the dark walnut touches! For some reason, it is somewhat hard to find, the GPS doesn't pinpoint the exact location.

    Benne Miso Mushroom Hoagie
    Lisa S.

The coziest little pastry shop! I went for the Miso Mushroom hoagie, but ended up walking out with a vegan jam bar, too. Miso Mushroom hoagie - full of flavor, it didn't taste like mushrooms to me. I liked the greens mixed in and the bread was absolutely killer. Can't go wrong with a sesame roll. Vegan jam bar - a little on the dry side, but honestly not bad at all. I think dunking it in some coffee would help, but it had a crumb situation on top and the perfect amount of jam. Employees were so friendly and fast. There was a bit of a line when we got inside but it moved rather quickly. 100% worth a visit to grab some breads and other delicious pastries!

I went to Middle Child a few weeks ago just after 3, only to find it closes at 3. Today I returned, around 1, and there was a good crowd there having lunch. I ordered the Surfer, and the Hash Brown Potatoes. The Surfer is Middle Child's most popular sandwich. It's made on a Ciabatta bun, and has a thick layering of tender, lean, House Turkey breast, with melty Swiss cheese, arugula, blueberry chutney, and Duke's mayo. It's hard to describe just how delicious this sandwich was. My biggest concern was the Ciabatta bun - it's not one of my favorites, as I've found them to be tough and difficult to bite through. My fears were quickly put to rest after the first bite! The bun had a slightly crispy exterior - and when I followed through with my first bite, the tender, soft interior of the Ciabatta was a pleasant surprise. In fact, it complemented the thick savory Turkey, arugula, chutney and mayo! It was one of the best Turkey sandwiches I've had. Now, if that wasn't enough, don't forget, I ordered the Hash Brown Potatoes. It said Hash Browns on the blackboard, see attached picture, but these 'weren't your Mama's hash browns'! They are described online as Latka'd Hash Browns. They are thick crispy squares that combine a potato pancake latke with a hash brown texture. The interior reminded me of my mother's potato kugel, which I still reminisce about. In one word, those fried crispy potato squares were outstanding. It's 'a must try' and goes so well with the Surfer! Last, but not least, the Limeade! It was so refreshing! Not too tart, not too sweet... just right! I'll be returning to Middle Child in the not too distant future!

The corned beef was an enticing vibrant pink, tender and juicy, with a perfectly balanced and pure saltiness that accentuated the beef's natural flavor. The scrambled eggs were incredibly smooth and creamy, complemented by the rich, melted cooper sharp cheese. The rye was toasted with butter, giving it a thin, crispy crust and a soft interior--a bit softer than Hershel's East Side Deli's, fragrant but not greasy. Every part was delicious, and the combination was harmonious and delightful. The portion of ingredients was very generous, definitely worth the $14.50 price. The service was a little slow, but the moment you tasted it, you would forgive everything!

I had the turkey on wheat with American cheese. I opted for the Russian dressing since I'm not a fan of hot deli mustard. I had it toasted panini style. The service was quick, friendly and you could tell they took pride in what they were doing. My wife opted for the pastrami on wheat with may and provolone cheese, also panini style. She had potato salad as a side and the coleslaw. Both were good. The Marketplace is a very large (formerly Penn Station) turned open market area covering food, produce, meat market, flowers, artisans etc. A wonderful place. We originally ordered just one sandwich to share, but it was so good that we ended up going back for another one. The pastrami was flavorful, tender, and packed generously into the sandwich. Highly recommended if you're visiting Reading Market, definitely one of the standout food spots there.

They serve you fresh waster (Drinks to order include Hanks, Boylan's, Harney and Sons, Teas etc.) and will serve you at the table or you can walk up and order at the counter. Their menu has a great mix of deli, steak, "chicken" steak, meatball, sausage and cutlet sandwiches with interesting flavor combos. You can also get breakfast (till 11AM) or a salad. They also have sides that include - tots, fried pickle chips, onion rings, fries, fried mozzarella and Zayda's pickle spears, chips and cherry pepper shooters. They have a couple of vegan options and GF rolls for extra $$. The staff was more than happy to give recommendations and their favs. My first lunch was The Eye - $15 Ribeye steak, Cooper Sharp American, fried onions came on a seeded Liscio's roll. If you enjoy the somewhat newer Cooper sharp style that's out there you'll like theirs. The Cooper sharp was gooey, mixed in well with the meat and on the heavier side. The ribeye was thin cut, delicious and the portion was pretty hefty. Second visit I went with - The Nad - $15 Chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella, prosciutto, arugula, Mike's Hot Honey that came on an unseeded Liscio's roll. The portion size was good, chicken was fresh with good breading, the hot honey was a tad on the heavy side, but the flavors all came together pretty good on this one. Sweet, salty, light bitterness from the arugula and some heat from the hot honey. I added Thin Cut Idaho fries to make it a combo for $3 extra and I have to say they were delicious. They smelled like McD's and tasted similar. They are cash only, but have an ATM on site. You can use a card if you order online. The one bathroom they have was pretty clean and organized. I will certainly stop back for a visit if I'm in the area to try out more of their menu. Thanks guys!

This is far from the traditional banh mi, not so much due to the meat choice but the fact that the vegetables take a back seat.
