Machero should be rated as Chicago's best Mac repair store. Its a class act like this among all the sneaky ones in the world that reaffirm there are good, decent, and honest people left in this world. My Mac's screen sizzled and then went dead after some water damage. I took the Mac to Apple and off course those self serving geniuses immediately told me my Mac is history and I would need to rebuild the entire circuit board for 900.00 or get a new computer. I was bummed and did nothing for month until I realized there is life outside apple care. So I called a few places on yelp and didn't get some good vibes. Most of them wanted to charge me non refundable fees to see if they can fix it and some over the phone also said i needed a new circuit board. So my intuition told me to call Machero and they told me to bring it in for free estimate, no obligation. I figured worse case they would tell me what the others did about a circuit board. An hour after I brought it in, Gino tells me the only thing that was damaged was some memory chips and he can repair everything for under $100.00 total. Now, let me reiterate. I know as much about Macs as I do about astrophysics so he could have told me the bogus b.s. the other places told me and taken me to the cleaners Instead, his focus was on me as a person, not me as a number, or a receipt. Maybe if more businesses and their owners were as decent and ethical as he was, they'd be in business and not part of our financial fiasco. So let me save you time and money and headaches. Be like NIKE: Don't think, just do it, and if you have a Mac issue, bring it in for some real people skills in fixing your mechanical ones. read more

Gino is sweet! And I kind of want to leave the review at that, but I guess I'll say a little more. In all honestly, I didn't go to Gino for Mac help, but I know he rules the business. Gino and I got in touch because of an event I was running for FreshBooks. I needed a space and wanted to spend as little money as possible. I reached out to some of our customers in Chicago and Gino was SO awesome to get back to me super quickly and offer up his space to host our workshop. He worked with me to secure catering, audio-visuals and anything else I needed. Srsly -- ANYTHING! I needed a bunch of chairs and rental places weren't down with renting only 50. He got in touch with a nearby church and helped us arrange a donation to its after school program. AND helped me carry and drive over the chairs throughout one of the city's first snowfalls of the year. Incredible. I am so relieved to know that there are honest people like Gino left in this world! My Macbook Air was broken at the hinges and when I initially took it in to an IT service provider at University of Chicago (that supposedly has Mac specialists), they told me that the part could not be replaced and I would have to change my entire LCD screen for $875! On top of that, they charged me with a $40 initial diagnostic fee and I paid an extra $50 to get the service expedited. So I basically paid them $90 for them to tell me I had to pay another $875. Of course I retrieved my laptop immediately because I had a sneaking suspicion that these people were either incompetent or they wanted to rip me off. And then I stumbled upon MacHero, took it in, and got a call from Gino within 24 hrs (and no BS "initial diagnostic" charges). He told me that first generation Macbook Air actually were defected and cracking of the hinges was a common occurrence. So he sent me the troubleshooting link and told me to just take it into an Apple retail store and they should be able to fix the problem for free. Either that, or he said that he would be able to order to part and fix it for $150. Sure enough, Apple replaced my entire LCD screen for free. And to think the other place wanted to charge me $875?!??!?!?! (I wrote them an angry letter and got my $90 back though). Anyway, it's seriously so refreshing to come across an honest, reliable, and expert business these days. He could've easily just charged me $150 to fix it but he treated me like a person and gave me honest advice, something that he would have done if it was his laptop. Because of my terrible experience with the IT service provider at my university, I have tremendous appreciation for that kind of honesty. MacHero isn't just one of the best IT places, it's one of the best repair places, period. This weekend I spilled coffee on my MacBook. I was able to get most of the moisture out but I was still unsure of the machine's condition. I got the +$700 estimate from Apple and thought I would do better somewhere else. Fortunately my other computer wasn't broken and I was able to find this Yelp page. I'm glad I did. I followed the other Yelpers' advice and took my MacBook to MacHero. MacHero offered a free estimate, a reasonable price for repair, and a transparent process, nonpareil. I highly recommend MacHero for any and all Apple needs. read more

I want to add another review. My Mac laptop died (and I mean door-nail dead.) Gino tried to fix it, but let me know that the repair cost was not worth it, given the computer's age. So, he found me another, better, faster (stronger!) Mac, and transfered all my stuff over at a very reasonable price. Gino at MacHero is the Go-To-Guy to end all Go-To-Guys. I teach people all the creative aspects of the Mac, but for technical needs I am out of my league. When my old PowerBook was dying, he let me know that the repairs were simply not going to be worth it; for the amount needed I could almost buy a new MacBook - so I did. Several months ago I inquired about MacHero's services and had very positive communication with Gino. I was able to work out the problem myself, however, and did not follow-through. Recently, I arranged a post-construction clean-up for a family member who was out of town. It was late on Friday afternoon, and he internet connection was lost. I called MacHero with an internet emergency- hoping they could make an immediate superhero visit and intervention. Shawna answered the phone, and I explained the situation. MacHero had no immediate availability, however, Shawna stayed on the phone with me, asked me very pointed questions, and advised me on some possible solutions. It was quite clear from talking to her, that Shawna was an expert both in IT and customer service. Very impressed. I will certainly consider using MacHero in the future, if I can come up with the $135.00/per hour fee they quoted me. Haven't checked, but I suspect that is standard for this kind of work. The company totally blew off a confirmed, scheduled consultation that Shanna made days ago for me to speak with Gino! This is not the responsiveness or great service that I read about in the other reviews. My excitement to hire MacHero quickly turned to disappointment as I tried to call and email after the appointment time passed (although the plan was for them to call me) but no one responded. I will look for another company to help with my new office set up and ongoing computer needs. read more
