Maccaroni was on my list of eateries to hit up while in Barcelona. Some would say I was lost and accidentally found it, but I think the universe was conspiring to present me with a memorable meal. The place is cute and small, so I sat at the counter facing the kitchen, because that's always the best spot (or the worst spot depending on the kitchen). In this case, I was delighted to see freshly made pasta weighed and cooked in amazing sauces. The concept is simple... choose a pasta, a sauce, and any extras you want in it. Or you do the smart thing and order the dish of the day. Today's was pappardelle with organic sausage, almonds, and mozzarella. It comes in a huge bowl, and everything about it is perfect - it's a mix of textures, contrasting flavors, and super satisfying. The pasta had bite to it (cooked to perfection), the almonds were sliced and provided a nice crunch and contrast in flavor to the dish, the mozzarella was creamy and not added an accent to the dish (rather than smothering it), and the sausage rounded everything out. The staff and chef were super friendly and service was quick. Definitely worth a stop for lunch or dinner. read more

Hm, I wasn't really amazed by Maccaroni. It's a very, very tiny place. Imagine a walk-in closet with pasta. My server was nice and patient as I butchered both Italian and Spanish in an attempt to order. When the pasta came out, it was a fine texture, but the pesto I ordered was only average. I've had some killer pesto around the world, but this needed far more basil and olive oil. It tasted like the flavor was dialed down. It's not bad, it's just so-so. I'm bummed because I really wanted to love Maccaroni. Instead, I stuck a feather in my cap and called it a night. There are better options elsewhere. read more

I absolutely adore this place. Found this place whilst just roaming the streets and had a carb craving that could only be satiated by pasta. It's a small place with a bar and two small tables, modest but cozy. The seats aren't the most comfortable but what they lack in comfortable spots, they make up for in their food. The truffle spaghetti carbonara was DIVINE. It came with small pieces of black truffle that had me making sounds at my food for the entire meal. Also a great deal at €15,90 for TRUFFLE PASTA. This little gem was the light of my time in Spain. It was recommended to me by a friend who found this place while on vacation. It is hidden on a small street within the Gothic Quarter. The actually store front is quite small, probably 3-6 tables, with a choice of eating at the bar. If you are seated near the bar area, you are able to watch the chef prepare the pasta. Did I mention that the pasta is freshly made daily?! I opted to try the tagliatella bolognese with added cheese on top. My goodness gracious, amazing does not even describe how delicious this meal was. The pasta was homemade, freshly cooked, and al dente. The sauce had so much depth, and fulled with so much flavor. Portions were generous as well, so sharing is a possibility. I destroyed the whole meal, and rolled out of restaurant. The next time I am in Spain, this is my first stop! Happy eatings! read more

Came here cause of the stellar reviews - however, our pasta was pretty terrible. We got a cacio de Pepe which was inedible because of the amount of salt that they used. The waitress then insisted that they don't add salt. The other saffron pasta we got was also sub-par - but we ate it anyway. This is a little place located in Gothic Quarter with a little bench out in the front. If you're looking for a romantic, fancy dinner - go elsewhere. This restaurant is more fast food/cute spot to get a casual dinner. They make the pasta right behind the window when you first enter, so you know everything is super fresh! I loved the way you order pasta here, they give you a menu with an extensive offering of appetizers and different types of pastas, sauces, and toppings and a marker. You choose what you want by filling in the circle next to the item you want. For appetizer, we had a provolone and cheese dip with bread and for the main we chose 3 different pastas. Gnocchi with pesto, spaghetti cacio e pepe style, and rigatoni with arabiatta sauce. We requested everything be made on the spicier side. The food was good, not the best pasta I've ever had but very flavorful and fresh. The appetizer was yummy as well. You can't really go wrong with a melted cheese and sauce dip. The only thing I was meh about was the gnocchi with pesto sauce - I thought it tasted bland and the gnocchi was a tad bit over cooked. Otherwise the cacio e pepe and rigatoni was so delicious, we finished our plates. One thing to be noted especially is the service, they were so sweet and attentive here. When we first came in, there was no table seating available so we sat down at the bar. But after about 10 minutes, a table opened up and we requested to move there and they quickly cleaned off the table and set us up there, no problem. Also, they don't speak the best English here but they tried their hardest to help us in understanding the menu and how to order without getting frustrated with us. Finally, we didn't think our pastas were spicy enough so we requested chili flakes and the gentleman came back and forth a few times with different options to make sure we were satisfied with what we have. I came here because my friend recommended it and I am very glad I did! You basically have the choice of any type of pasta, any type of sauce, and additional toppings if you want. I really like how you can personalize it because I can have my favorite type of pasta with my favorite type of sauce! I got the pappardelle with Bolognese sauce and it was amazing. The pasta is very fresh, you can actually watch them making it. My friends got gnocchi with a four cheese sauce and ravioli with a pesto sauce. Both were delicious. So this place is pretty cool... They give you a laminated menu and you check off exactly what kind of pasta, what kind of sauce, and what kind of meats and toppings you want. Im a fan of tagliatelle pasta so I picked that and got a 4 cheese sauce with broccoli and chicken. My friend got the spaghetti with bolognese and maybe some veggies. We also "accepted" another pasta dish with spaghetti in pesto and some peppers they made on accident. Sorry no pics : ( but the bolognese was delicious and the pesto was good but a little too salty. This is reminiscent of like a Chipotle or Wok to Walk where you build your meal yourself. So.. if you don't like your order, maybe you ordered wrong cuz the quality is good! They cook it right in front of you (if you sit at the bar) starting with boiling the pasta you want. A great find for authentic homemade Italian pastas perfectly located in El Born in Barcelona. The pastas are all fresh and homemade and you really can tell the difference. The sauces are equally fresh and tasty. Very casual and tight seating. Not a place to linger after you have finished. You can get in and out fairly quickly (maybe 30 minutes). Great spot to bring kids - my 5 year old loved this place. You can watch the chef making your food. Desserts and wines by the glass are also very good. They are definitely open for dinner until at least 22:30. Not sure if they were open for lunch or late-night. read more

I grew up eating my mothers cooking which was incredible so I'm pretty picky on Italian and this place was a home run and it was cheap. The atmosphere isnt much to look at but the food was incredible, the pasta was fresh, the sauces were delicious and I was really upset that I didnt go there for another meal again but there were so many places to try that I just couldn't get back there. I strongly recommend this place once you tire of the amazing Catalan and Spanish food thats every where in Barcelona. My only complaint was the bolognese sauce I had, I felt like it was missing salt or something to really enhance the flavour. My boyfriend I arrived at Maccaroni in the Gothic area. It wasn't a typical restaurant that you would go to in the states however, it was really cute!!!! Lol. This is a fresh pasta take away restaurant with small sit-in area. Maccarroni was a good find - the pasta is delicious and the emphasis is on simplicity done to perfection. You can add to basic sauces as you wish, such as tomato/basil, arrabiata or cheese, with a list of extra ingredients, or just keep it completely simple with a tasty sauce and parmesan. Prices are reasonable, there is one chef on duty and you can see your food being prepared - it can take a little time depending on how busy it is, but it´s worth it. Of an evening you could find a nice shaded spot in one of the numerous civic spaces in the area and eat al fresco. There isn´t a big emphasis on Italian food in this area and this is a welcome break from the multitudes of tapas bars all around. For pizza lovers, they put us in touch with Nap pizzerea just around the corner - equally authentic and reasonably priced. read more
