Let me start with the positive. 1. The potato salad is quite tasty. 2. The pendleton was good and stacked. (Hot pastrami) 3.......that's it. Now, the flip side and WHY I've given this place the lowest mark I have ever given on a review. Our friends raved about this place so we were looking forward to it. Our seating was quick, good. We were seated at 8pm. Our server was polite, and took drink orders quickly.good. My husband ordered dessert first, to be brought first, at 8:15. We ordered our food at 8:30. We received our drinks at 8:40. Are you watching the time frame here......? Our food arrived at 9:30. An hour after we all ordered sandwiches....SERIOUSLY?!? Refill on drinks....periodically. Had to ask 3 times where the dessert was that was ordered first, at 8:15. we were told it was frozen and had to defrost. REALLY?!?! YOU GUYS... I will never go back to this place. Dessert finally arrived at 9:45. We just got our to go boxes and finally left at 10:15. This was a complete joke. And not to mention the parking situation. 2 weird levels of parking a 2 big flights of stairs. Those of us with bad knees will just find another place to go. read more

My parents and I sat down for dinner at 7:02. We ask our waitress if we can still do the wing special and she says "no, it's too late", two minutes late are you serious? Then, she takes our drink order and disappears for about 10 minutes. We see her walk right by us and deliver other peoples food, and not even mention a word to us/bother to take our order or apologize for our wait. We ended up leaving after sitting there for 15 minutes and we will not be going back. read more

This place is everything I hate about TGI Friday's, Applebee's, and all of those type places rolled up into one spot. I went here twice...once, for football watching and the second time to give it another chance. Both times, the food was ok but service has been horrifically bad. The first time we went, it took 30 minutes just to get menus...and then another hour to get food. And the wait staff were pretty unapologetic about this. When one of my party complained about the bad service and asked whether they were super busy or something, the response we got was "yeah, it's a bunch of new people...ah well." Against my better judgement, I decided to give the place another try. And this time, the service was only slightly better, but service was still pretty bad. Now, keep in mind, I like when wait staff do some playful banter but what we had was just someone who either hates her job, hates her life...or both. The only saving graces for this place are that the food is ok and the drinks are cheap. However, there are other places to watch sports and get drinks. If you do eat here, I would highly recommend sitting at the bar and getting the bartenders to serve you. If you really must have a sandwich from here, get it to go. I've lived In the Roanoke area for over 12 years and generally enjoyed Macados... I've been to most locations in the area. Unfortunately - it's just gotten worse each time over the past few visits to the point I just don't think I can keep eating there. This most recent visit caused a person in my group to get extremely ill after eating the Brooklyn Bridge sandwich. We think the turkey on the sandwich was bad (smelled funky). This was the 2nd consecutive time we've had someone get sick - once at the location by Tanglewood and this time at the Lynchburg location. The service the last few times has been poor to really bad - slow service, forgetting silverware and napkins and this last visit the server brought out one of our two meals and no silverware so we just sat there waiting for the rest of our parties meal... for about 5 minutes. The staff is generally not friendly and the food just isn't good anymore to the point it'll make you sick! I hate to post this review but after 12 years something is just fundamentally wrong across all the Macados location. I am not sure what it is but I hope the fix it. read more

Service at lunchtime was less than par. No drinks brought out immediately, as it should be, soup was good however, sandwiches were never served after a forty-five minute wait. They informed us they were very busy but very few in house customers, they stated many takeout orders. I said that the people in the establishment should surly be accommodated first. Macado's is always on my list of old haunts I want to visit when I'm in Roanoke. It's like... Applebees, before there was Applebees. And better. Every Macado's I've been to has all sorts of local paraphernalia on the walls, along with lots of pop-culture kitsch. While they do have some other things on the menu, for the most part I'd call it a sandwich shop and bar. They have an insanely long (in a good way) list of sandwiches, and just in case none of them are what you're looking for there's always the build-your-own option. My old stand-by sandwiches are the Honeymooner, and the Tippecanoe. The drinks are always great, and they usually have a fun selection of seasonal drinks (and sometimes desserts too) for the holidays. My favorites are always what they come up with for St. Paddy's day. The only reason I give Macado's 4 stars rather than 5 is that sometimes the service is not so great. All the same, in over 20 years of coming to Macado's I could count on one hand the number of times I've ever had problems with anything besides that... in my book that's pretty freakin' good. read more

Went there for dinner several days ago. Waited several minutes for someone to show up at the front to seat us. Sat us at a table, which was so sticky!! Probably from cleaning product residue!! Not sure, floor was very sticky too. I ordered tea for myself, my husband asked for a beer on draft list, waitress had no idea, then pulled out a card. He ordered a Sam Adams, waitress didn't tell him it was the summer pale ale. Ugh! He drank maybe a quarter. Paid for drinks and left. On our way out there were 2 people just sitting on the steps smoking cigs. Not sure why, as there is a smoking patio just a few feet from where they were, but we had to detour around them just to leave!! If you a want a horrible experience go here. Sorry, we tried the Macado's in Marion,VA. It was so nice. Thought this place would've been good too. Boy were we wrong. This place--- RUN far far away!!! read more

We were traveling through the area and because of a snow storm, a lot of restaurants were closed. We ordered food to go- the wraps we ordered were mediocre. Not bad, but not worth ordering again either. We ordered to go and were told 15 minutes, however when I got there to pick it up (approximately 12 mins after the order was placed) it was extremely busy in there and I had to wait a bit longer- I didn't really mind since everyone was really friendly and kept checking on me and my order. read more

Received horrible service. No one was watching the front. We stood there forever waiting to be sat and we thought we had to seat ourselves because no one came up to the host stand. We chose a booth in the bar area. When we sat there for about 10 minutes. Still didn't get a menus. No one stopped by but walked around us. I went up to the bar asking for menus and the bar tender wanted to argue with me about giving me menus. Bar tender was giving me a lecture about how we're suppose to wait at the front and wait to be seated. I told him we'd been waiting forever so can I get the menus or we can leave. He's still trying to argue with me at this point. Slow service. Rude. From out of state and will never come back again when I come to visit. The food was average bar food. M friends burger was Good. I ordered chicken tacos not bad and the fries were good bar food. You know what really really ruins a a good meal, the service, The bar tender was more concerned about straightening her bottles and trips to the kitchen than her customers. I was getting a table for my friends to join in about twenty minutes so i figured I'd get a table and start drinking...except, waited forty minutes for a waitress...then i waited another thirty for water and forty for my alcohol! The staff isn't very friendly either, granted there are some but majority of time, I'm ignored or they're rude to you! My friend ordered a grilled cheese with bacon and when they brought it out i could've died. ONE SLICE OF CHEESE and two slices of bacon! Macado's is on my list of restaurants that I have to visit when I am on my short visits to my hometown. I love their sandwiches. Part of it may be that I grew up eating them, but I tend to think that they are just excellent sandwiches. They have such a large menu and if that doesn't do it for you you can always create your own sandwich. They have other offerings that I don't think I've ever tried, like giant baked potatoes and quesadillas, etc. Favorites include The Johnee Dee, The Brooklyn Bridge, and The Lone Ranger. If you're in Roanoke, Salem, Blacksburg or Greensboro, NC you should definitely stop by the local Macado's. read more

Seems to be a consistent theme...questionable service but good food. The same was experienced last night (8/7/11). Long time to get water, first round of drinks and refills BUT the four sandwiches we ordered were excellent! Glad I didn't listen to the other reviews on this one. This place is what it is - a good sandwich shop. I had the Big Jazz and it was awesome. I tried the boneless wings on the suggestion of another reviewer, and was pleasantly surprised. Usually I'm not a fan of boneless wings because they end up being mostly breading. Not the case here! Meaty and just the right amount of crunch. The service wasn't bad, but that may be because it wasn't too busy on a Tuesday night. Regardless, I did not experience the horrible service others have. Visited in a Friday night and were greeted and seated immediately. Our server came by and got both our drink and meal order. I got my normal Julius Caesar with ranch on the side and chips and my niece ordered a sandwich as well. Our meal was delivered a short time later and was absolutely delicious as always! Everyone was extremely nice and our server was very attentive throughout the meal which was nice... However, after we finished our meal we did not see our server for a good fifteen minutes then when we finally saw him again we had to ask for our check. I was sorely disappointed! Granted, I haven't eaten here in about 18 years, but this was one of my favorites during college! I remember the quality being much better and fresher. My experience was terrible. The steak sandwich barely had any steak on it, had old wilted lettuce, was on a stale bun, and worst of all- the whole thing smelled and tasted like it had been basted in grease- and not in a good way. Sadly, I dare not give it a second try, that is how bad this experience was. Also to mention the curbside pickup was anything but smooth. It took me four phone calls (hung up on once) before I could finally get my food and get someone to bring it out to the curb. If you offer curbside why would you ask the person if they're coming in to pick it up? The people answering the phone are juvenile and rude. One person actually said to me when I asked if my order was ready, "I don't know we're really busy. " This poor service was AFTER I had already included a 25% tip when I paid online upfront. read more

No longer go to this Macado's. I go downtown Roanoke or Salem. The service is nonexistent...go sit at your kitchen table in your house for 30 mins with a placemat. That's what we did. Third time for us service sucked...go downtown to Macado's to get your food and leave before we ever got drinks at this location. As a young vegan who still lives at home, I have a hard time finding restaurants that will accommodate both me and my very non-vegan family members (no beef on them... get it? Moving on). I understand one can only expect so much at a place that thrives off of cheese and turkey, but perhaps including a few vegan options could broaden their customer base. A specific suggestion could be taking the Molly Brown sandwich (a meatless concoction of mushrooms, tomato, cucumber, and greens) and subbing the mayo/cheese with hummus. Serve in an egg-free crusty bread and I know vegans like me would be on it in a heartbeat. I ordered the Molly Brown, thinking that it would be hard to mess up a grilled cheese. I ordered it without the tomatoes and the mayonnaise because, who puts mayo on a grilled cheese??!? This was a to go order and of course it had mayo on it when I got it home. To me, it was inedible and disgusting. When I called about the mix up,I was told it was probably melted cheese and not mayo. I know mayo and this sandwich was disgusting. I was offered a replacement if I drove back there (about 10 miles). I declined their oh so generous offer. I'll never eat Macado's again and would not recommend it to anyone. Their food and customer service is abysmal. I'd rate zero stars if I could. read more

Macado's is just Macado's. An endless list of sandwiches, with some appetizers and soups thrown in for good measure, and lots of drinks (of both the adult and non-alcoholic types). There are only a few vegetarian options on the menu, most of them including green olives for some reason, so I generally left feeling disappointed, but it was still a cool enough place for a night out with friends in Roanoke and left most people satisfied due to the sheer size of the menu. read more

The only saving grace for this Macado's is that the food is good. The service is THE WORST. I work nearby and am in there for lunch pretty regularly and it's just become a running joke with my co-worker about how awful the service will be each time. Today our server came back to our table after about 20 minutes to ask us for our order again because HE FORGOT TO PUT IT IN. He kept trying to give us things that I knew the table behind us had asked for. And his cologne was terrible and overpowering. The previous time we were there, a different server was equally as bad. Slow, didn't write anything down, and asked the table behind us (a mother and her son who was probably about 6) if they wanted one check or two. lol Every time we, or any other table, asked for something he would respond with "I'll get it when I can." I'm an all over the map when it comes to figuring out what I want to eat. I ended up ordering a Turkey on Croissant sandwich (forgot the cool name), but it was delish. Just what my taste buds ordered! My colleague ordered a burger and it looked yum yum. She said it was good. If you've read my reviews you know burger is usually my go to when all else fails or just because that's what I want! Me and my mother visit at least once a week for a quick lunch. It's a nice place to sit just to look at everything hung on the walls, booths, and ceilings. I always order the chicken tender baskets. As you know with chicken tenders it's risky because some places just serve you large pieces of breading. Macado's has always provided me with plump juicy tenders and large pile perfectly cooked crinkle fries. I've never actually gone for dinner or ordered a sandwitch so I can't vouch for that any of that stuff. I had a very bad experience here!! I ordered a chicken Mac and cheese dish and the Mac and cheese tasted like it had harsh chemicals in it as soon as I put it in my mouth!
