It was Thanksgiving night at a hotel and I wanted a late night snack. Thank god Denny's is open 24/7, even on a holiday. I called Denny's to confirm they were open and a lovely lady named Tina answered the phone. She told me they were open for the holiday. I ordered a late night snack of chicken fingers and a garden salad through Uber Eats. It was delayed arriving to the hotel due to the holiday, but it did finally arrive and it was delicious. The chicken fingers were cooked perfectly and the garden salad was wonderful. Denny's is a part of my childhood just like everyone else. My parents took me there for dinner and breakfast as a child, and it is always a favorite among college students after a long night of drinking and partying. The ambiance is casual and makes you feel like you are at home. The service is always on point and the food is always exceptional. Denny's will never go out of style and is always a family favorite, so I'm so glad this has been around for so many years, and will continue to be around as long as they are families and late night college students looking for a bite after partying. You can never go wrong with Denny's.

You'll notice friendly personnel upon entering. Most of them will know you from coming through there many times. The seating is open and handicap friendly. You can see the prep area from the seats and you'll find it clean and fresh. The menu has increased like most places since the virus but you get more than enough food for what you pay. Diner food is cooked as you order it so if you love breakfast for dinner like we do, stop in for an omelet or fresh pancakes! Great family place to stop, affordable and fresh!

I'm just passing through (Louisiana to Niagara…read moreFalls) and did a quick search for a good place to eat in this area before I booked my hotel & I'm thrilled I made time for Angelle's Diner! I made lots of friends in the outdoor dining area since I have my sweet dog. My new friends recommended hamburgers & the BLT. I decided to strike out on my own & ordered the Country Fried Steak with white gravy. Now I'm from Texas & I love CFS, so when I tell you it was good, that means something!!! It was fresh & hot! Fresh okra that you can tell was hand breaded (amazing, my first of the season since we've had so much rain in LA)! The onion rings were also awesome. The ranch was a little runny but it tasted great (I just would have liked more sticking to the ORs)! Patty was great!!! Super helpful & attentive. She brought my pup water & then brought him refills. That has never happened to me before! Doggie owners, I felt welcomed. All that plus a really nice fruity cake for dessert cost $23.58! I feel weird giving my meal a 10 (since I'm from TX & the food is a Texan staple) but it's well deserved. Great ending to a very long day driving!

Ernie's on the Market is owned and operated by Bill Kopcial, a former Roanoke City firefighter and his business partner Scotty Smith. They are wonderful individuals. Bill always greets me when I'm having breakfast and he stops by. Just the other day, I ran into him and his family at McAlister, where they were having dinner. My usual breakfast there is two fried eggs over easy, with bacon, homefries, and white toast. I also enjoy their omelets. On weekdays they are one of the few restaurants that open at 6:00AM, so it gives you an opportunity to get a head start of the day. The server is a very friendly and hospitable young lady, who is always looking after her customers to see if they need a coffee refill or would like a glass of iced water to enjoy with their food. Today I had the usual breakfast. No matter how the cook prepares my breakfast, it always tastes so good. The white Texas toast is always fresh and soft, and the eggs and bacon tastes just right. I also enjoy looking at the historic photographs on the brick wall and their flamboyant decor. Their prices are reasonable enough to be able to leave a well deserved good tip. And one always leaves the place with a good feeling.

A family-owned restaurant that has been serving locals, travelers, and late-night crowds from its classic 10-stool lunch counter since 1930, and continues to be strictly cash-only. A restaurant that not only has survived, but strived for 96 years, owned by the same local family, and is currently owned by fourth-generation owner Matt Bullington. Who has said that the key to its longevity has been sticking to what has made them successful since they opened. A restaurant that has never been remodeled and whose menu has never been expanded, but that in this lies its real charm. A restaurant that despite economic hardship, tries never to raise prices and remain affordable. A restaurant that many people go to it because of their food, others because of their prices, and others like me this morning, because of the experience to sit at its counter and appreciate its character and charm while enjoying a classic breakfast of three fried eggs over easy with bacon and white toast basted with butter. That restaurant was and continues to be the iconic Texas Tavern, located in the heart of Downtown Roanoke. This morning I drove my pearl white Lexus up to it and parked in front of the sidewalk at the parallel parking with a one-hour limit. There is so much history behind this place that the excitement of the moment made the breakfast experience more momentous. Once inside, a young gentleman who has been working there for over two years now greeted me and immediately made me feel at home. He took my order and almost at the same time started making my toast and frying my eggs. In no time at all I had my order in front of me. I noticed and made him aware that one egg was missing. He made it right by frying me another egg over easy and I didn't mind because of his positive attitude and very unique personality. He also asked me how I'd like my coffee and prepared it just as requested with two creams and three sugars. Every one of the three eggs were perfectly fried over easy and I sprinkled a salt and pepper mixture over them. The bread of the toast was so fresh and tasty braised in butter. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the high-quality of their food. I'm looking forward to returning one day at lunch time to taste some of their menu items of which they are known for. Starting with their Cheesy Western, the tavern legendary trademark burger served with a fried egg, cheese, pickles, and a sweet-and-tangy homemade cabbage relish. Or maybe a bowl of their secret-recipe chili served with onions. Or their trademark hot dog served Coney Island-style with chili, relish, mustard, and unions. All comfort food that make you feel good and bring a sense of nostalgia, warmth, and satisfaction. I highly recommend this small, historic, eatery for a one-of-a-kind, memorable, dining experience. One that you'll cherish and hold dear forever.

Open daily from Monday through Friday, it is one of the few restaurants around that opens the earliest for breakfast, at 6AM, and closes at 1:30PM. Today, I decided to re-visit the place for an early breakfast, since it has plenty of free offstreet parking up to 8AM. I arrived at around 6:45AM and parked next to the sidewalk in front of the restaurant on a street parking spot. There were already some steady customers dining inside. As soon as I arrived the wife and co-owner gave me a warm welcome and I reciprocated by wishing her a Good Morning in Greek. Somehow, I find that making an effort to speak to others in their native language, establishes an immediate, friendly connection with them. I sat at one of their booths, and she asked me if I wanted coffee to start off with. I answered in the affirmative and then gave her my order. I ordered Paul's Breakfast Special. 2 eggs, with choice of bacon, ham or sausage, home fries and toast. All this, including the drink of your choice, for $8.00. I ordered my eggs over easy, bacon for the meat, and white toast. If you look at my photographs accompanying this review you will notice the quality of each of the items in my breakfast and how they were cooked to perfection, just as I requested. The bacon strips were thick and meaty, and cooked to order. The eggs were perfectly over easy. And the home fries were slices of potatoes fried just right. After delivering my breakfast to my table, she came by to refill my coffee. While I was enjoying my breakfast, other groups of customers came in and also received a friendly, warm welcome. A father and daughter came in, and soon after, the lady co-owner brought a slice of freshly baked cake with a lit candle on top and sang to the girl the Happy Birthday song. Sometimes the least expected roads can take you to places that not even your wildest imagination…read morecan reach. This was the case this morning, when after coming out of my yearly physical examination, I decided to take the Yellow Mountain Road and have breakfast at Lucy Kat's Diner. After being awarded the Yelp NC Triad Squad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, celebrating their contributions and accomplishments throughout the year, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and businesses, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And Lucy Kat's Diner, in Roanoke, Virginia, is a perfect example. As I drove my Lexus up the narrow, curvy, road, I wondered if the destination would be worth the drive. But after I arrived and entered the diner, its nostalgic charm, and reason for its existence, captivated my soul. The diner was almost full of steady customers who along with me, appreciated the welcoming atmosphere, tasty food, and fast and friendly service at reasonable prices. It didn't take long for Kat, the owner of the diner, to recognize that I was new there, and come to give me a warm newcomer greeting, serve me a cup of coffee, and take my order. But before she did this, she answered my question of: "Where did the first name of the diner came from?" She quickly disclosed that Lucy was her beloved grandma, and that the restaurant came to be based on the dream her grandma Lucy shared with her of wanting one day to open a diner. In her honor, she did so. The interior of the diner was very clean and organized, painted yellow, with hardwood floors, and full of roaster decorations. At first I sat in the dining room on the side because all the tables in the main dining room were taken. But as soon one got empty, I asked if she could move me there, for a better appreciation of the place and a greater connection to the diner and its customers. When she was ready to take my order, I ordered from the Breakfast Specials, a number 5. It included a Pork Tenderloin, 2 fried eggs (mine, over-easy), a breakfast side (mine, hashbrowns), and a biscuit or toast (mine white toast). I also requested if she could add 2 strips of bacon and charge me extra for them. While my breakfast was being prepared by her assistant of almost 8 years, she made sure my cup of coffee was always full and that I had a glass of iced water on my table for me. As she brought out my food order, everything looked perfect. The pork tenderloin was just the right size and thickness, breaded and fried. The over-easy eggs were cooked to perfection. And my white toast had butter spread all over them. The hashbrowns were also done well. And the bacon strips were meaty and cooked just right. I highly recommend this diner for breakfast or lunch. It has a welcoming and friendly ambiance, good food at reasonable prices, and an amazing customer service. All things needed for an exceptional dining experience.

Never once have I had a single issue worthy enough to mention. Also for perspective it's 8pm, it's been a 14 hour day and I surly was in no mood to get into my car when it's less than 20 degrees outside and the wind howling, but I did. Sat at a table for over 15 minutes, bartender avoided me as she was in deep conversation with another patron I suppose. Moved to the bar. Got a TUDE from her with a "I would have came over, you didn't have to move". Then another guy just walks up, she gives him a menu and then his drink, I have neither. Finally she comes over my way, I asked if I could place a take out over. She grabs a menu, drops it in front of me and walks to the other end of the bar without asking or taking my drink order. She starts at the other end of the bar taking drink orders for all the other patrons who already have a drink in front of them. My daughter was a waitress while in college so I'm extremely empathetic toward wait staff, my lowest tip is 20%, good service 30% and excellent pays 40%. Tips are how they earn a living. Walked out.... also the menu is vastly different than what is offered on their website. Also I guess it may have been the chef- working extremely hard the entire time holding up a wall. What's sad in the end is I'll bet a 100 to 1 that not even a peep will come of this review from hotel or restaurant management.
