My daughter goes to VT and loves Macados. When we were dropping her off, we wanted to grab food before heading home and she recommended we try. They have so many sandwich options, which was overwhelming, but great. They also have other food options, but we all went for sandwiches. We went on a weekday during lunch time, so it wasnt busy. We grabbed a table by the bar and were greeted and tended to efficiently. The set up was very casual with various things on the walls including pictures. Definitely gives local and college vibes, which we loved. We ordered the Macados club, Godfather and one other, which I can't recall. The sandwiches are large and very filling. I was able to take half home and finish for dinner. It comes with chips or you can pay extra and get fries. They tasted really good and fresh. We have definitely made Macados a regular spot. Ill be sure to get pictures next time we stop there.

Service was great. Our server was very attentive, offered some great suggestions as we were first timers to the restaurant and she was very personable. The restaurant itself is very busy in a good way. Lots to see and start conversations on. The food from start to finish was good. Fresh, hot and prepared as ordered. Great for all ages.

Came here for a late lunch after flying in from L.A. The decor and ambiance are really fun, quirky & nostalgic items all over the walls, ceiling. Very much had a TGIF restaurant vibe (if anyone remembers that chain). Service was horrible. Took us forever to get the menu and then more time to get our orders in. It's VT graduation week so you'd think restaurants would have more staff but since it was an off-hour, they only had 1 waitress for our area of the large restaurant. There were tons of menu items to choose from, mostly sandwiches. Everything tasted fine, nothing to rave about. My graduate said the service is always slow regardless of time or season. Macado's is probably better as a bar than as a full-service restaurant. But all the kitschy objects & items around the restaurant will keep kids enthralled & occupied during the long wait for food. Not sure I'd go back.

Came here with my family on a Friday evening - there were people for sure, but it wasn't too crowded. Service-wise, I have absolutely no complaints. My server was great - orders went in quick; my mom's continuous requests to have her hot water mug filled up were done very promptly, and the food came quickly. However, the food was quite average, and probably below average. I got the Big City Jazz, which was a sandwich that had bacon, turkey, avocado, and some vegetables. I felt like the sandwich wasn't seasoned well, even though it had so much on it. The portions were about normal. Pricing was quite fair, however. Macado's isn't a bad spot, but I didn't have a great time and probably won't be back (for food at least).

20 boneless wings (half spicy Thai, half bang bang sauce)

From the outset, you might think that this is an old college dive bar that has been around forever and seen generations of Virginia Tech students. You would be right. I stopped by on a Thursday night to grab a quick dinner while in town for a job interview. The only reason I can't give this place 5/5 stars is because of the service: I stood for nearly 10 minutes at the hostess station waiting for someone to seat me. Multiple staff members walked by, clearly saw me, and didn't do anything to offer a table or even say "please hold on, we'll be right with you." I was finally able to get a seat at the bar and even there, I sat for a few minutes before the bartender offered me a menu or to get a drink. Besides this, the rest of the experience was positive. Macado's menu is massive! If you love sandwiches, this is the place for you. I ordered the Ziegfield's club, which included hot pastrami, corned beef, salami, swiss cheese, coleslaw, tomato, and Thousand Island dressing on three layers of rye bread. It was a warm, savory, juicy, delectable mess that I would order again instantly. I got the potato salad as my side which was filled with big chunks of potatoes and the perfect ratio of mayonnaise. Because it was a Thursday and they were doing a half price special, I got 20 boneless wings (half spicy Thai, half bang bang sauce). The flavors were so good and I liked all the extra blue cheese dressing they provided for dipping. I washed it all down with two pints from the local Three Notch'd Brewing Company. The food was fantastic and I had more than enough to bring home. I can see why Macado's is such a local treasure and I would not hesitate in the least to stop in again.

Visited a few weeks ago when I was back in Blacksburg and while the food is always great, the service was really slow. It took us almost 10 minutes to be seated and another 10 minutes to order drinks. The food was quick but paying took a little while too. We visited during the summer when school was out so it was not busy at all. I did order the buffalo chicken wrap and it was very good and the fries were excellent, I just wish we got faster service.

Macado's is a great place to take someone visiting Blacksburg. From the decor to the massive menu, there's truly nothing else like it in Blacksburg. The menu may be overwhelming to some, but it also means that there's something for everyone. They recently started offering gluten free buns which is exciting because a lot of their menu is served on bread or buns. While their kitchen does not have a devoted gluten free section, they were careful in making us aware of possible cross contamination. I chose to get the Gibson girl grilled cheese on gluten free bread. I was disappointed that the bread was not grilled, but I'm assuming that was to limit cross contamination so I appreciate it. The bread was more of a bun, so next time I am going to get a more hearty sandwich (or a burger) so the bread doesn't overpower the toppings.

Macado's definitely was not what I was expecting tonight. They had their Sunday night .39 cent wings which is a complete steal. However, it only applies to boneless chicken, and they are not very good. Honey BBQ is probably my favorite flavor but too much of it will get pretty sauce heavy. The wings are somewhat small and just do not taste very good. We also had to wait about an hour and a half for the wings but we were told before hand we were going to have to wait for about an hour so not a problem there. Would not come again unless you want some cheap wings that don't taste the best. Maybe I should've gotten traditional.

They offer a nationally acclaimed menu that's been featured on NPR, Southern Living Magazine and even the ACC Network. They offer their own parking lot in the rear A huge rarity in a college area. It was clean and maintained. It was a treat to meet the owner in front of the tavern tending to landscaping needs. The historic homes facade presents beautifully. There is also outdoor seating. Our party of seven enjoyed a Sunday brunch while knowing little about the establishment. We were promptly greeted with a smile and menus and seated on the front room. Each of the four interior rooms has a fireplace and nostalgic photos adorn the walls. They also have a small bar with a focus on bourbon. The menu had one hit after another with authentic Southern cooking. The description calls it a "Traditional Regional Farmers Menu."No question the fried chicken is the hero. Five out of seven got the fried chicken. Others the chili and meatloaf. A plate of biscuits and cornbread were placed on the table after drinks placed. The history of the tavern on the menu is worthy of your time. The owner, originally from Blacksburg moved from California to restore for his own home. Later opening the restaurant. His goal to keep the structure original and true to purpose as a tavern. The owner himself comes from a family of tavern proprietors. I digress too long! The FOOD ALREADY!!! Well as you have probably already guessed it was impressive and exceeded my expectations. Every main, every side was a home run. From the mash potatoes & gravy to the macaroni & cheese, backed apples and green beans, to the rarely found succotash. All fabulous! Only starter was ham biscuits which were good. Mains of chili and meatloaf strong. But it was the fried chicken that brings local and tourist alike in the door. The chicken was cooked up to perfection and deliciously moist The breading was exceptional as well with no dripping grease and a medium crispy finish. The only desert ordered was the brownie & ice-cream. So yummy! The owner Daniel checked in on us before departing which made our experience even more special. The Blacksburg Tavern is a Southwestern Virginia gem that's a must to dine at. Checkout was efficient and prices affordable for large quality dishes. I will return later this year and hope to catch live music. Highly recommend.

I remember my visit was a special one as it was busy, yet the service and food were impeccable. Bull & Bones put their best foot forward that night and I left Blacksburg thinking that B&B was one reliable dining spot. Neal & I returned on 11/15/25 to check out Tech's football game at Florida State (our hotel wasn't televising the game). We were in town to check out VT v. Charlotte - a basketball game that featured some promising young talent for the Hokies. Of course, I arrived at B&B with high hopes since my previous experience was a memorable one. Unfortunately, my latest visit wasn't quite as good. The evening began well enough - there were plenty of available seats at the bar and we were greeted almost immediately. Our server was nice and pleasant, and returned with our drink orders promptly. We took a few minutes to look over the menu and we were able to order without issue. We weren't in a rush, and the vibe was fairly chill. I didn't expect top tier service, but there were stretches in which an employee couldn't be located in order to get continued service. For example, our server was cut (yet no one informed us) - we didn't see her after she took our dinner orders. I looked around constantly to ask for another round of drinks, but she wasn't around. While waiting for our entrees, what appeared to be the manager on duty stopped by to tell us that our entrees may take a while because our ticket was sent to the kitchen right behind a 40-top's order. He was apologetic, but we were cool with it because of the game. Surprisingly, our food arrived less than 10 minutes after the manager's table visit - we probably wouldn't have noticed anything was wrong if he hadn't said anything. I appreciated the transparency, though. I saw it as one of the evening's highlights. After the food arrived, it was a constant struggle to find any available server (as a reminder, no one told us she was cut). Refills and/or more rounds of drinks were held to a minimum. That irked me - it got to the point where I went to bar whenever I needed something (I wouldn't have minded doing that during the visit, but they set the expectation by providing table service - meaning I want table service for the duration). Neal ordered wings, while I decided to go big with a ribeye. Neal devoured his entree but I wasn't happy with mine. I ordered the ribeye rare - it came out nearly well-done. My entree came with two sides - I ordered sweet potato fries and rice. The sweet potato fries were overcooked and burnt. I tried one fry and one fry only because it was charred and inedible. The rice wasn't much better as it was cold and mushy. Since a garlic parm fries appetizer was already at our table, I loaded up on that since they were pretty good. The steak was passable since it wasn't completely dry, so I ate about half of that before I became full. So, B&B was a miss, imo, this time around. It would be easy to dismiss this as things going haywire during a busy Saturday night dinner service but, outside of the 40-top, they were empty. So, this visit felt like B&B's quality has gone downhill. I hope this isn't the norm for B&B because they honestly are a good place. But after time, some businesses lose their focus, and it felt like B&B reached that stage. Hopefully they can re-evaluate, reinvent, refocus and improve, but if their food quality continues to suffer, they won't last. Thank you, Bull & Bones. JV

The food is excellent when compared to other local restaurants, and the menu offers a reasonable American fare variety without an overabundance of selections. I did get a very much overcooked medium rare prime rib on my last visit, but the waitress took care of that right away. (Still, someone should have caught that before it got to the table.) Word of warning: the Sunday Brunch menu is actually a breakfast menu with limited choices. Last time I checked, lunch items were not available on Sundays. First off, it's a really big place with lots of dining nooks all over which is where we got stuffed into as a couple. It was a bit dark and musty where we were seated, I didn't find it to be very pleasant or quaint. We were also close to the kitchen which turned into its own bit of drama I'll explain later. We typically like a coursed meal when dining, our server was very pleasant and she obliged. We started with one appetizer to share and it was the Crab Cake at $18. The texture, prep and cooked quality appeared decent, however my wife became ill after the meal and we narrowed it down to the Crab cake as I didn't have any. Next up she had the house salad and I had the Caesar. Both were crisp and tasted good. For our main, she had the same 6oz Filet @ $43 and I had the Farmhouse Cut Prime Rib @ $55. Her Filet was prepared correctly and had a nice flavor. The Prime Rib was very good, and I had requested an end cut which I was served. Very good overall. I had Broccoli as a side and she had the mashed potatoes. No complaints there. Now here's where it got "interesting". Near the end of our meal in the stuffy musty dining nook for two, some big kerfuffle broke out in the kitchen which we were right next to. The language of many F-Bombs was greatly elevated as yelling ensued between some kitchen staff members. It was super unpleasant and put a big damper on the night. We decided to not have desert and coffee after dinner and left before whatever was going on in the kitchen broke out to the dining area. I'd say the food overall was decent and prepared good. The ambience shift though from the kitchen staff infighting, as well as the musty nook made the overall experience not that great. I think the place could be cleaner as well. If you're planing on going, eat far away from the noisy kitchen and do not sit in the nook areas. Your experience and expectations may vary. I doubt we will go back though, not worth not being happy and comfortable in an environment like that for how much dining cost these days.

We were seated downstairs in the bar area, which has the feel of a typical college bar. Apparently, there is also a quieter restaurant area upstairs with the same menu, which I probably would have preferred. Our server, Maddie, was friendly and attentive throughout our meal. The menu sounded great, but unfortunately, the execution didn't live up to it. We started with the pork belly cornbread bites, which were just okay.I ordered the salmon entrée, and Maddie made a point of letting me know that the salmon is served medium rare. Perfect-I actually prefer my salmon rare to medium rare. Unfortunately, when the entrée arrived, the grilled asparagus and roasted golden beets were cold, and the salmon itself was barely warm. Everything actually tasted good, but the entire dish should have been served much hotter. I didn't complain or send it back, although in retrospect, I probably should have. My husband's picanha steak was overdone and chewy, so his entrée was disappointing as well. The service was good and the menu has a lot of promise, but both of our entrées had significant execution issues. Given how frequently 622 North is recommended, we were expecting much better.
