4 star, could have been 5star if they bake the bread a little longer 1. Location is convenient. I don't have to drive to Dearborn for man'oushé (flat bread) if I am nearby for work. 2 Everything is fresh, bread is roll off from a machine at the back and then bake in the brick oven. They need to bake it a little longer because the back of the bread is sort of white. 3. Meat bread is not oily for some reason. more tomato flavor compare to other bakery. Maybe that's how the owner likes it. 4. Zaatar flavor is mild, herb is not overwhelming. Maybe because I ate it when it was cold. 5. Cheese bread is good, bread is thick like pita bread which is odd. We stopped in to try some bread items. We were not disappointed. Fresh cheese bread out of the oven was fantastic. Spinach breads I took home, warmed them up in foil in toaster oven. When i saw the re reviews I decided to drive 40 min to try it. It was worth every bite snd every mile. Prices and sizes are the healthy people. The place is not fancy at all, but it seems the staff knew many customers by name. The pies were baked on the spot and there were many people with preorders. Not a high tech place, which probably keeps the prices affordable. I will come again if I get the chance. read more

Years ago my wife worked in a salon with a friendly Arabic man. He was always geeked on how down we were to try different things and foods. He knew I was a big fan of spicy food, and one morning he handed me this small brown paper bag "here, try this, you will like." I opened the bag, and inside was a small round piece of bread, with cheese, and some sort of spicy meat on it. The smell was amazing, I had never smelled something like it before. I demolished it in seconds. He told me it was sujouk, a type of sausage. I asked him where it was from and he couldn't remember the name of the place, but told me it was a bakery at 15 and Dequindre. This is before iPhone days, so I had to just drive around and look for it. Finally, I had found Maatouk. I've been eating here now for 10 or so years. Always the same, a couple sujouk, a couple cheese, and a couple zataar. I recently took my nephew here, and introduced a whole new generation of my family to the goodness that is maatouk bakery. Also, I'm white, and weird looking, I have tattoos all over, and piercings in my face. I know people find me weird looking, and lots of times that comes at the cost of good service. Not at maatouk. Just coming back from vacation and thus off of my carb free vacation diet, I started salivating just from seeing the word! I cannot believe that this place has no buzz! I asked the woman working if they were new and she said they have been around since 1998...wha?! How have I not been here before? Now I feel like I can share this little treasure with you. I could smell their mini pizzas first thing when I walked in, yum! They have 8 different kinds of pizza made on pita bread, most for only $2 (the spicy meat is $3). Personally I like the broccoli cheese, but just try one and you will have a new lunch location. They also have a whole savory pie section. They have meat, chicken, cheese, spinach, and cheese/parsley. I tried the spinach and Oh-My-God! It was absolutely amazing! It was basically a dinner roll filled with spinach, garlic, and onion...everything that will make my hubby think twice about kissing me. It was like spanakopita, but in roll form. Oh and you can buy a bundle of them (about 8) for $7! Then I purchased an assortment pack of their desserts. I had 4 pieces of homemade biscotti, 4 cookies, and 4 date filled cookies for only $7!! (I sound like an infomercial don't I??) I know that I will be returning there and probably ordering takeout for people at work. This place makes the most delicious middle eastern breads. The ingredients are so fresh and the breads are always warm or can be warmed. The workers inside are the biggest sweethearts. They instantly greet you and they make sure you are helped with everything you need. They are extremely patient and you never have to wait very long. I'm far from knowledgeable about Lebanese cuisine/baked goods, but the spinach pies I got from this bakery were amazing. At ~$7 for a dozen, it's a steal! What is especially endearing about the bakery though was the elderly man making something that looked like pizzas in a stone oven at the storefront. Everything looked fresh and homemade - which has enticed me to make another visit to this place when I'm in the area to try out all they have to offer. There isn't any signage explaining what's in what, or whether certain baked goods are savory or sweet, which would've been helpful for someone that didn't grow up eating Lebanese food. Another gripe I had was a number of customers cut in front of me, since the cashier acknowledged them first, despite there being a clear line. I felt that was a little rude and it did rub me the wrong way - one star off for that. I hope to give them another chance in the near future. read more
