My cousin lived nearby and as a boy we would deliver his newspaper route and ride bikes to Star for a huge cinnamon roll with the gooey brown sugar and raisins. Some days it required TWO chocolate milks to wrestle one down! They still sell 'em today. Members of my family have been buying at Star Bakery for over 70 years. Obviously, a legand in Northwest Detroit. It's not a modern day bakery. Most everything is a Jewish classic but made just like they did 60+ years ago. Seven layer cakes, small bumpy loafs, star sugar cookies that melt in your mouth and oh yeah, bread. Miles and miles of bread. Mandel bread, marble rye, really most any bread you can think of. It's about traditional with the bakers at Star. Not only are you exposed to well preserved ancient recipes and Orthodox Jewish delicacies, but, the fellowship will keep you coming back. If it seems too exclusive, it's not. Many popular breads, cookies and cakes for everyone. Take my word and try the Angel Wings and the Kichel. You'll be back for more. 8/20

I arranged to pick it up the following Sunday 9/6/26 about 11am. I showed up at that time and was told "we don't have a cake for you. I told her I gave the order last week - she went to the back and came back with my order sheet. "Sorry, we were closed for a power outage. I don't know what to tell you." ...... So, nobody could call me on a cell phone to tell me or have it made somewhere else? "sorry". .... I should have walked out when I saw the flies in the display case and not stayed to place the order. I went to another bakery and bought one without the decorations as I had wanted. They had no time to add that for me, they said. It was a special occasion, honoring someone who had died a few days earlier. I can't recommend your bakery, anymore. You didn't value my business or prior business. I got three loaves of the poppyseed, lemon bread, three chocolate chunk, banana bread, coffee cake, two breakfast sandwiches and three chocolate croissants. $64 + $19.50 The croissant loaf looks interesting, it' comprises of six croissant dough to make the loaf. The breakfast sandwich biscuit is quite good. The biscuit is a bit dry, but still flaky. The egg is light and fluffy and thick too. The coffee cake, lemon poppy seed, breakfast sandwich and chocolate croissant were all yummy. The lemon iced frosting is prominent and good. Not a huge fan of the nuts. The chocolate croissant is really good. Chunky blocks of chocolate. The croissant is super light and flaky. The Coffee cake is crumbly, slightly dry, but great with tea or coffee. The chocolate chunk is just okay, not my jam.
