My wife and I have been on an Indian food kick lately, so we turned to Yelp to find an authentic spot near our house. While browsing reviews, we came across a hidden gem in St. Ann called Maaji's Street Kitchen that had surprisingly high ratings. I couldn't believe how well-reviewed it was, so we decided to check it out for ourselves. We arrived around 5:30 PM on a Monday and were greeted warmly as soon as we walked in. We made our way to the counter to place our order, and the staff member was very helpful once we mentioned it was our first time. He walked us through the menu and even pointed out different dishes and combo options on their digital signage display menu, which made ordering much easier. We placed our order to go and waited inside. It's a small space, but it's decorated with unique art and has a really unique vibe. There was a hypnotic Indian song playing in the background, which added to the atmosphere. We sat at a table that had a game on it--I believe it was called Carrom, a tabletop game where you flick checker-sized discs into corner pockets, similar to a mini pool table. A woman who I assume was the owner or manager came out from the back and greeted us. While we waited, she showed us how to play the game. As we were playing, she came back and even offered us samples of the food we had ordered. I was honestly impressed by the level of hospitality--it's not something you experience very often. The sample alone was some of the best Indian food I've had. The spices were perfectly balanced for my taste, and it made me even more excited to get home and dig into our full meal. My wife ordered the Mixed Vegetable Curry Bowl, and I went with Combination #2 (Shredded Chicken Curry, Steamed Rice, and Parantha), along with a side salad. Overall, the experience was fantastic. Even though there are many Indian restaurants near me, I am willing to drive 20-30 minutes out of the way to get the best Indian food cooked with love by Heena (the owner/chef of Maaji's). This is how good this restaurant is, and I am always amazed by how Heena can cook all the food to order while connecting with her customers (she remembered my name 2 months after I visited once!). The restaurant is small and tucked away on N Lindbergh in St. Ann. The space is set up mostly for takeout as they only have ~4 tables for customers. Don't let this deter you from dining in if you have the time. You can play a traditional Indian game on one of the tables while you wait or chat with the staff or other customers. The menu isn't as expansive as some other Indian restaurants in town, but it really doesn't need to be. So far, everything I've tried has been delicious and the combination menu's value cannot be beat. This lets you try out multiple things on the menu all at once. In each dish, you really can taste the love and care that the chef has put into the food and if you get a chance, ask her about how much thought has gone into even the ingredients being used. Tip: If you don't mind paying the extra $1, always get the garlic and ghee parantha (deliciously flaky indian flatbread). It is totally worth it. read more

I was heading to my airport hotel for my 1st flight out the next morning. On my way I found this place after 8pm. I was concerned delaying their closing. The owner/chef, Heena, was so very kind and took the time to explain to me her menu. It was getting late and I didn't want to consume too much sugar. Heena explained to me their mango lassi was made out of aguva syrup, which has less of a sugar spike. She even offered me samples!! It was amazing and I had to have it with my meal. I got the golgappa chaat and it was a spectacular fusion of flavors in a single bite. If you haven't had them, try it! I tried something new for my main, Anda Aloo rice bowl. Loaded with veggies, potatoes and eggs for a hearty dish. Beautifully spiced with house made chutney on top. I have never been greeted and treated with such kindness in a restaurant. Not only was the service top tier but the food was excellent. I tried the chicken curry, mixed vegetable curry, paneer curry, and chick peas. The owner provided a small sample plate so I could try their food before ordering and answered all my questions on the menu with enthusiasm. Everything was perfect. Just the right level of spice and heat. Highly recommended. A little hard to see from the road but worth the effort I promise. I met Heena the owner and her energy was EVERYTHING! Her positivity and love she has for her cooking and customers is unmatched! She literally took the time to break down her ingredients and even brought us samples! She is veganfriendly and glutenfreefriendly and uses only organic ingredients. We have ordered takeout from Maajis a few times now. The food is always delicious and portions sizes are large. Most things tend to be on the spicier side so if you can't handle heat this may not be for you. This time we ordered the Tofu Matar Bowl, Jeera Ajwain Aloo, and a Shredded Chicken Curry Bowl. The best thing I have tried is the Matar Paneer and the Parantha is always so good! When we went to pickup, our food was about 20 minutes late, as they forgot to make it. This is the first time we have experienced this and I think it was an honest mistake. The owner is always super nice and helpful with the menu. I had the most DELIGHTFUL experience at Maaji's Street Kitchen this week! I had spoken with the owner, Heena Chopra, when she was at the Soulard Farmer's Market, and she won me over when she described her homemade, healthful dishes. I stopped in for lunch when I was near the airport, and it was a marvelous meal! I ordered Maaji's Deluxe Salad, which was HUGE and packed with goodness in the form of tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, chickpeas, and chunks of paneer. It was topped with a dressing of lemon juice, cilantro, aromatic chaat masala, and Maaji's signature green chutney. The combination was delicious--so fresh and cool on a summer day! It was served with a lentil flour papad (flatbread), which was so light and crispy that it truly melted in my mouth. I had a side of garlic and ghee parantha, which was outstandingly good! I wish that I'd ordered more to take home with me. Heena was in the kitchen cooking when I arrived, and came out to chat with me during my meal. She took time to stop at every table and chat with every diner while I was there. I had the feeling that we all were being truly welcomed into her home, in the form of this fabulous restaurant. Second time I've been here. It's convenient, near the airport, for trips in and out. The food is absolutely delicious. So flavorful and perfect sized servings. She also makes the best chai. Wow! Not only is this restaurant located in st Ann, you can also watch them on the weekend mornings at the Soulard Market. Their curry chicken is delicious and so tender. The service is top tier. The owner herself served my husband and I and she was informative about each dish and offered us recommendations. I love the smell of spices as we walk on to the restaurant. OH MY GOODNESS!!! I cannot believe I am just now getting here. They've been at this location for about a year, according to the owner, who was the only one in the place when I arrived for a late lunch pickup. She was amazingly welcoming, accommodating, and generous in her many offers of samples to taste the different combinations. She went to great lengths to explain how she's very careful with allergens (including dairy, nuts, coconut, and flour). All of her items that have flour or sugar are purchased locally and not made in her kitchen!! I settled on the combination #2, which can either be served as a wrap(with Parantha) or in a bowl (no Parantha). I chose the bowl, but the parantha (bread) was delicious (imagine a flat croissant but tastier) This was a ton of food, I could've easily eaten half and saved the rest for lunch tomorrow. But it was soooo delish, I couldn't stop myself (damn the macros!! I hope I'm not being disrespectful calling her this but Mama Maaji is a gem (which is like saying Mama Mother based on Maaji meaning Mother respectfully but its got a nice ring to it ). I'm glad I dined by myself because it gave her a chance to talk about what she loves doing and me to soak it all in. This was up there with one of the most pleasant experiences dining I've had. This is a relatively newer restaurant in the Water Center Plaza right by H2O. I was greeted by a warm smiling Maaji who explained the menu and I just took a seat while deciding. The atmosphere wasn't rushed and once I placed my order for the Combo #2 it came shortly after. Maaji even gave suggestions on how to eat the meal with the chutney to elevate the flavor. Everything was good and fresh like she said even down to the parantha being airfried which was flaky and yummy and a little messy. This place is hands down one of the best Indian food restaurants we've ever been to. The owner is super sweet and provides exceptional service. Very kind. The food is spectacular. Everything is super fresh, organic, and as pure as it gets. To emphasize, she cooks specifically to be gluten free friendly and her meals are all homemade with no additives or preservatives. The flavors are incredible, the portions are filling, and the ambiance is great with Indian music playing in the background. This place is on the up and up and for good reason. We will most definitely be visiting again. We got the Gobhi masala, Chole masala (spicy!), and Matar Paneer (our favorite, more sweet). It comes with Paranthas (air fried naan and tastes like an Indian croissant) and Basmati rice if you get the family meal (#1). We got Maajis sweet rolls and two golden milks for dessert. From what we were told the sweet rolls are the Paranthas covered in Nutella and powdered sugar and golden milks are steamed milk with honey and Indian spices (pictured below!) Before we even got our desserts we knew we had to write the review because of how delicious our food is and as well the service is top-notch! We got personalized service the whole time. I think she's a one woman show because she takes the orders, makes the food, and delivers the food when it is ready. P.S. we finished the dessert and if we could say more lovely things about this place...highly recommend absolutely everything we ate!! read more
