We went here with friends who recommended it very highly. We were first seated outside, but asked to be moved inside because their heated garden area was still very cold. We waited for about 15 minutes to be reseated, but didn't mind. Once we were seated the waiter immediately asked us if we were ready to order before giving us our menus. We eventually ordered. The dumplings came out and were very good. We had to remind the waiter that we had ordered tea as well. There was an extremely long wait between courses. We literally saw a couple, sit down, order, eat, and pay in the time that it took to get our entrees. One entree came out 30 minutes before anyone else's. The second came and then 10 minutes later the other two people were served. The food was great, but the service more than made up for this and earned the one star review. The waiter did say that someone had called out sick, but this did not excuse the level of poor service we received. The whole dining experience took two and a half hours of our lives! Also, every time someone opened the front door it would get stuck open, so we had to get out of our seats and close the door for them on three separate occasions. This is a great example of how bad service can ruin an otherwise good restaurant. read more

Took her a while to get to us at all. No biggie. She remained pretty silent throughout the whole exchange, though. The food is okay but the service is terrible. Never order delivery (Seamless, Doordash or otherwise), as we waited over 2 hours to get our food without an apology. After 2 hours of calling multiple times, and being assured our delivery was on it's way, our food finally came. This place used to be our favorite Chinese restaurant for years! Then we haven't gone for nearly a year and something changed drastically in this time. Not one dish which used to be a staple - like soup dumplings or hot and sour soup - tastes the same! There is no flavor. It's all bland. And worst of all every dish tastes of lard. Yes, pig fat! It's awful! Like my favorite sautéed green beans used to be dry sautéed with a bit of fried onions and spice. Now it's swimming in this tasteless water., can't even call it a sauce, and here comes this lard taste! Or a dish of crispy duck with pancakes and plum sauce. Duck is not crispy and was reheated by using pig fat, you can't miss it! Oh! and pancakes are like cardboard! Thick and hard and all stuck together. Same btw has happened to soup dumplings. It used to be this goodness wrapped it thin pouch which spilled flavorful soup in to your mouth. Now it's tasteless ground pork with no spices in pouch made of cardboard. I feel cheated! I think this place has new ownership and a different chef...And it was a last time for us.... read more

This place is particularly inviting, from the friendly folks who work there to the art on the wall (at the time giant rubbings of manhole covers from around the world by Guillermo Resto), the big wooden canteen style tables and understated lighting (i.e. not so moody that you can't prevent adding flavoursome flourishes to your shirt). But most of all the dumplings/buns! I'm not however a big fan of such intense sweet n' sour and that here is no exception, yet the garlicky eggplant is amazingly yummy despite this. Mmmm! Ordered delivery from here (fast delivery), everything we got was super yummy! I thought it was pretty authentic Chinese. Love love love the Tic Tac Toe chicken (Shredded chicken in spicy garlic sauce)! It tasted so good I couldn't stop eating it, I thought they had put some drugs or something in it. The food served at this restaurant is no less then excellent. I am a native New Yorker brought up in the village and this is the best Asian food I have ever eaten in New York City. I fully realize how crazy that seems but it is true. The wontons with peanut sauce are just so good that it is a wonderful experience to eat them. I even pour the sauce on the brown rice after the wontons are gone. I have not had a disappointing dish there yet and I have almost worked my way through the menu. But those wontons in that peanut sauce are very very good. When I work late I order in........... We had lunch yesterday at Shanghai Bistro. For two we ordered Steam Pork Dumplings (XiaoLongBao), steamed pork buns, scallion pan cake and wonton soup. That is about the right portions for two adults. The wonton soup had a nice scallion flavor that made it memorable. The xiaolongbao were tasty. The interior was clean and Williamsburg trendy. Seriously, do yourself a favor and order the juicy por buns for appetizer and the "awesome beef" for main course. Not sure about the service, I think it's average, however I've never had a bad experience. They used to be affordable, but are kind of on the expensive side now. Be prepared to spend a lot more money than your average Chinese food. On the other hand, the food is substantially better. read more

M is a decent Chinese joint, certainly the best one in this neighborhood (which is not saying much, I know, as Williamsburg is no destination for such fare). On those days when you can't bring yourself to get to Chinatown, this is the go-to place to satisfy your Chinese-food jones. The scallion pancakes, double sauteed pork belly, and vegetable and noodle dishes are really quite respectable. It is spacious and the service was just fine, thank you very much. The temperature of the space can get a little too chilly, however; the last time we were there, all our dishes became cold in next to no time. But overall, this one is a keeper. read more

The juicy pork dumplings were good. They are the standard buns that every place that serves juicy dumplings has. That being said, I brought friends here because I was hankering for some Chinese food. I've lived in NYC for 4 years and my husband and I agreed this was the worst meal we've ever had in the city. The bland, watery wonton soup arrived barely tepid. We sent it back and the waiter returned a minute later, with same bowl, which was now sort of luke warm. I'm sorry, but IMO, soup should be served hot. The green soy peas with tofu sheets had 4 tiny little threads of tofu in it, and was mostly mushy overcooked greens in a broth that was way too salty. We worried we hadn't ordered enough, but decided to wait until after we got our lo mein. Then the lo mein arrived. I took one bite and literally gagged. It was like someone had dumped an entire salt shaker in. The tiny, miserable pieces of shrimp were literally caked with salt crystals. It actually hurt to eat it. Utterly vile and inedible. We considered sending it back too, but at that point we decided to just cut our losses and get out. I had a slice on the way home. Too bad, because it's a cute place full of B-burg hipsters, but seriously, the chef last night had NO idea what they were doing. Inexcusable. read more

M Shanghai is a very good Chinese eatery in Williamsburg, the takeout and delivery is sometimes hit or miss, so I highly recommend eating in the restaurant. The wanton soup is elegant with pork wonton dumplings that are light. The lo mein is great and can be prepared any way you like with choice of noodle and meat. The rice cakes with shredded pork is one of my favorites, a very heavy dish but good flavor. But the duck with rice pancakes is the best, served with hoisin sauce, cucumber and scallions this large portion of Duck is prepared well and will satisfy your duck cravings. The drinks are good and over all everything is priced correctly. I would recommend this to anyone looking for Chinese in the Williamsburg area. read more

My favorite Chinese in the area for delivery hands down. I love the dumplings, beef. Noodles, everything I've tried! The only issue is that the deliveryman won't come up to my apartment anymore, and it's only the second floor, maybe 20 stairs max! Last week I ordered for four people so I tipped 6$ and he wouldn't come up called me again and again to come down but I refused. Made sure I waited for him to ring my bell and buzz him in. This place offers a good, homey and relatively unadulterated Chinese cuisine -- traditional stir fries, noodles, dumplings. It's comforting. Much of the stuff on the menu one can't find in a "regular" Chinese takeout (thank goodness). So, it may seem bland if you compare what you get to a typical sweet and sour, crunchy, spiced-up, floured-up-and-fried fare from a more "accustomed" Chinese restaurant. I love M for the XLB and the pea shoots. I've gotten a few other things in attempt to learn their menu, but found the soup dumplings to be the best thing on their menu and some of the noodle dishes to be pretty bland. They're larger than most soup dumplings and the wrapper is a lot thicker than an authentic dim sum place, but the flavor of the soup is incredible and keeps me coming back.
