This is awesome (American) Chinese food. The pancakes, spicy chicken, and pork dumplings were all amazing. My favorite dish was the lo mein (they made it "super spicy") with the shrimp, chicken, and pork. Bigger place than it initially looks with a cute outside seating area (with heaters for winter thank god). We got so much food for what we paid for too. All in all, super satisfying. read more

Freddy Mercury BALLS and morning glory shoots in a tea sauce. the second time I went to M Shanghai, the restorateur described how she created the recipe and I couldn't stop laughing about it until I tasted his balls and loved them. from what I remember her saying they are a 3 meat combo, and their consistency is interesting because of neither being your typical hard beef style meat balls, nor your typical dense pork balls you can find inside of "fried tiny buns" or something like that. M Shanghai is an attractive place mainly because it is a neighborhood place with pension style seating (long shared tables) a stocked bar, and a restaurateur who is present and usually participates in the dining experience making it a more familial affair. The Chinese staff coming out and eating together family style also ads to this mystique. The food is good for not being in china town and great for not being typical take out food, without airs. another plus which I am not sure is still going on, you could get half price appetizers after 1am. enabling you to extend your drinking time while enjoying salty treats. read more

i love m shanghai! dumplings and veggie lo mein...that's all this girl needs! i the staff is super friendly (might be a little biased because my boyfriend works there!) and the space is large. long tables are great for groups or just listening in on other's conversations! the main dining area is busy but the wait moves pretty fast and there's always something music going on in the bar area downstairs. be kind, tip your delivery boy! read more

I liked this restaurant, the food was good but didn't fullfill my expectations. I had ordered the noodles with oyster sauce and found the noodles to be too dry. I didn't like the seating arrangements in the restaurant either, a bit too close for comfort(long table with scattered seating esp. if it's just two of you, almost feels like a picnic table) but the vegetable shumai was yummy. I have yet to have a bad experience either dining or ordering take out. The food is always flavorful. The one and only con (thus far) is the outrageous prices and set up of the menu. Basically you pay for eat ingredient. I eat hear maybe once every several month due to the prices but when I do eat here my complaints dwindle somewhat. It was the dead of winter when we plodded in and when I spotted mojitos on the menu I squealed and pictured myself lying on a beach, picking mint leaves out of my teeth. Sure, it was winter but I was in the mood. Since we were seated near the bar I could clearly hear the bartender's thoughts on my little mood. He was pissed and wanted our server to rat us out. He refused to make them but 15 minutes later our mojitos grudgingly arrived. I was afraid to drink mine. On to the food! Ordered the vegetable spring rolls and the vegetable dumplings and it was the exact same thing except one outer shell was crispy and the other was soft. The sauce and filling was the same. I also tried the juicy pork bun and while it was pretty tasty, it was enough salt to make me feel like Jabba the Hut the next day. Ditto with the Mu Shu pork-loads of heavy, salty soy sauce flavor. I know it is the nature of this food but it was really really salty. It is still better than any Chinese restaurant in a 10 mile radius. I have to find my tried and true stand-bys and so far the kung pow chicken on a recent visit was awesome. I'm keeping an open mind on this place. read more

Third time around and I am still a fan :). I ordered the vegetable shumai to go Friday night and was addicted. I think I love the vegetable shumai more than the juicy buns. I am a fan of this restaurant because I love good dumplings and consistency. I may head back this week for more of the vegetable shumai..yay! read more

The food was good. But it took so long to come out. We were at the restaurant for 2 hours, the majority of the time spent waiting for the food to come. It was just my boyfriend and I, and all we ordered were veggie dumplings (YUM), two soups (one (one hot and sour, one mushroom/spinach/noodle), and a moo shu dish (shrimp). The dumplings came out pretty quickly, and they were incredibly delicious. But it was another 1/2 hour until my boyfriend's soup came out. My soup and the moo shu came about a 1/2 hour after that. The people sitting around us were all having similar situations. I'm assuming they are not typically this slow--it's New Year's Day so perhaps that's what messed things up. This place keeps me coming back for the pork wontons in peanut sauce! They are so good! The service is always very attentive and cordial. Blueberry lemonade made with stoli blueberry and in house lemonade! Magnificent! Though I ought to try other things on the menu the pork wontons are my fave. Tried the veggie ones they didn't live up to the hype. I've also had their version of soup dumplings which were delightful. I shall hope to try a noodle dish another time! read more

I come here specifically for the soup dumplings---they are divine. The restaurant really relaxed and cozy, so I find myself unwinding here after a few drinks in the neighborhood. The veggie dumplings are also pretty solid. Went there late Friday night with 8 friends and had a great experience. Sat us quickly even though it was fairly crowded, food was great. We ordered several entrees and apps and beers and it only came out to $21/person! Was very full afterwards. Soup dumplings were exceptional as was the Kung Pao. Salt and pepper shrimp not so much but nobody's perfect. Service was off-and-on at times but overall gets a check. I've had mixed experiences ordering delivery from this place (I think M Noodle is better for that) but as far as eat-in Chinese in Williamsburg, it doesn't get much better. read more

I came here thinking I would get authentic Shanghainese food since the rating was so high. I was so disappointed. Soup dumpling skins were 3x thicker than authentic ones. The waitress gave us soy with our soup dumplings instead of vinegar. The sauce to our minced pork and black bean noodles was sweet. The outdoor seating area smelled like a wet dog. Shanghai cuisine (上海吃饭). "Those dumplings have thick skin", i'm sure a Chinese grandmother would say. But love the awesome beef, tic tac toe chicken and the chefs diced fish. The regular jaozi are ok, and the chef's special hit and sour soup is big and delicious in winter. Only place I've eaten morning glory in NYC. Yum! It is indeed all about the dumplings, I prefer the steamed veggie but have tried em all. I love how they come out piping hot in the wooden vesicles in which they were steamed! The ambiance is OK, quite a wide range of patrons frequenting this spot. I've been on several occasions and the food was always great. We love this place. We have been going to them since they were on havenmeyer. I love the decor of the restaurant. We always get there oonlong tea. To start we get the spring rolls that my wife loves and i like the steamed veggie dumplings. Really good. Then i ordered the Tsingtao beer of course. Love the chicken with chinese brocolli. One of my favorite take out Chinese spots in the area. Obsessed w the chicken with chili pepper and Mongolian beef...two awesome dishes. Stay away from the noodles...not a fan. I think the goal here is finding the dishes you love and sticking to them; I've found that it's hit or miss with a lot of their dishes, but the hits are awesome. Steamed Juicy Pork Buns!! The best in Northern Brooklyn. I go here just for them and get two orders, they are so good. The sautéed pea leaves are prefect too, as is the asparagus dish. Tic-tac-toe chicken is awesome too. I have not had a bad meal here and I've been going for about 8 years. M Shanghai is also an important neighborhood business that I like supporting. So I was told I MUST try their awesome juicy pork dumplings. I did and yes, they taste great except the dough/wrap of their juicy pork dumplings is a little too thick for my liking. Food selection is not extensive. Noodles are reasonably priced but you don't get more than 3 good noodle dishes (I have tried about 5-6 different noodle dishes at M Shanghai). Portions are modest but enough. Service is erratic. Some nights are better than others.
