I started going here about a year ago after a not-so-great haircut at another salon. I was so nervous because I was cutting over 8 inches off my hair and at a new salon but Kelsie helped make me less anxious (the red wine also didn't hurt). I've been seeing her ever since for my highlights and cut every 7-9 weeks. You do have to tip in cash, but there is an ATM in the nail salon next door. I've never had an issue with Kelsie starting my appointment late, and she always picks right back up where we left off the last time I saw her. You can usually find street parking a block or two away, and they have later hours, so you can go after work. The haircut and blowout itself was good, however my stylist Marisa made me really uncomfortable with the constant upselling. In her constant upselling she made me feel like my hair was "bad" or "dirty" (it wasn't I had washed it the day before). She got really annoyed when I wouldn't buy the conditioner she suggested from her. I went there for a men's cut and style. Having never been there before I used their website to find a stylist that I thought would work. Upon meeting her, I advised her that my hair had been treated with keratin to straighten it. She took me over to wash it and started cutting. Immediately I noticed my hair starting to get really curly. After the cut was finished I said that I was unhappy with how one side of my head had hair cut shorter and angles straight up, while the other side was longer and cut to lay back. She immediately started to get upset and said that she wasn't good enough to fix it and that she needed someone else to try and fix it. After a 20 min wait another person looked at it and said that she didn't have time to fix it. I was forced to leave with it messed up and I had to attend my event that evening completely unhappy. I had to go to another salon and pay for another Keratin treatment because apparently they used a shampoo or conditioner that contained sulfa and immediately removed the straightening effect. Thought this would be a good place to take my daughter for a trendy, Joan Jett-esque mullet. My bad. The staff was rude and standoffish in that trendy salon way, but I didn't think too much of it. My daughter told the stylist she wanted to keep it long in the back in a mullet-ish way, and somehow this translated into a brown football helmet a la Sally Field in Steel Magnolias. I didn't even know this haircut even still existed, but it was fully short in the back and poofed at the crown. So I guess now we just have to go yell at Walmart managers that we're not going to wear masks? I was charged $75 for this Karen-ing. Never again. Also I left with a splitting headache from listening to the receptionists have an awful, loud conversation. Horrid experience. read more

I went to see Brooke for a cut and color. I told her I wanted to go very blonde! She spent over an hour foiling my hair and wasn't rushing the process, which I appreciated. Half way through my appointment it must have dawned on her that she would be having another client soon so her entire demeanor quickly changed. She decided against using toner in my hair, which I trusted her opinion, but she explained that it damages the hair, which I have also never heard from any other stylist. After washing my hair she quickly ran a blow dryer through my hair and left it damp as she didn't have time to fully dry or style it because her other client had already been waiting 30 minutes. From the front view I loved how it turned out! The cut was perfect and the blonde was exactly the color i wanted. Unfortunately I never got to see the back of my head until I arrived home. The back had random patches of dirty blonde (my natural color) and it looked like she forgot to foil certain sections. I called M Salon and explained the situation. Without putting me on hold I heard the receptionist talking to Brooke about my hair. Brooke began raising her voice at the receptionist and another woman (I believe a co worker) because she told everyone to "be quiet. I need a moment to think as I have an upset client on the phone and I don't know why". Brooke got on the phone with me and wasn't apologetic or understanding. I work in customer service so I was trying to be considerate as I understood she had another client that she had to assist but asked if she could just fix the patches. She only gave me two dates/times that she would be able to fix my hair. Unfortunately I had prior commitments on those dates that I wasn't able to get out of so Brooke never fixed my hair. This was my second time visiting Brooke. I was satisfied with my first visit but after my second experience I will not be going back to M Salon. Moving to a new city can be hard for a number reasons. Reason #1: You have to break up with your favorite hair stylist that you've developed a drinking relationship with over the last 8 years who also does your hair perfectly every time. Reason #2: You have to find a new stylist. It sounds like a simple task, but it's not. I've been to Salon M four times and had one half decent experience, 2 mediocre experiences and one very negative experience involving the manager. It seems like it's hit or miss... But mostly miss. In half decent experience I referred to, I was getting a cut and Ombre coloring done. The cut was a good cut, and the coloring was a nice color, but not what I asked for. It wasn't Ombre. It was just a highlight job with some toner :( and was a little expensive. I didn't hate the color though, and I suppose it could have been worse. The second and third times were just basic layering cuts for long hair. It was just okay. The layers seemed a little choppy both times. The third time I was there for a return. They have this tubing mascara there for sale and I purchased along with a lash curler. The mascara got bad review online and I didn't like it either after trying it. It was clumpy and jagged looking without adding much in the way of volume. The lash curler simply didn't work. The cashier was perfectly pleasant and helpful. The manager, who was sitting next to her openly rolled her eyes at me for returning something then condescendingly questioned my understanding of tubing mascara. I politely explained I was well versed, and this was simply a poor (and overpriced) product. There are several drugstore brands I prefer. Then she continued on with this snotty conceited disposition... Very unfortunate person. And that concludes my review. I wasn't thrilled with any of my experiences here and after that last one with the manager won't be returning. My boyfriend won't either since he can get the same haircut for much less almost anywhere else. read more

I had an appointment with Brooke to get my hair colored. I showed her the two "inspiration" pictures of what I was going for. I made it clear that I was apprehensive about going darker and even asked to do the least permanent route possible. My hair was already blonde, so to go darker it didn't need to be bleached or anything. I didn't ask for highlights, just an overall darker color. To me, it seems like all she had to do was pick the right glaze or dye color of light-medium brown. She missed the mark by a mile and applied very DARK brown dye to all of my hair (except a few blonde pieces). The blonde pieces may have worked if she dyed it the color I actually asked for, but instead they ended up looking extremely streaky and unnatural against the dark brown. I tried to stay positive but I was pretty distraught over it and went home and shampooed it for 30 minutes to see how much fading I could actually get to happen. I saw no real difference. It was so bad I called out of work the next day because I didn't want anyone to see me. I called M salon to tell them I was dissatisfied. I came back in and Brooke added some balayage lighter brown. In the end it looked a little better but still nowhere near what I asked for and way way too dark. Now if I ever want a lighter brown, this color has to be bleached out. I've gotten my hair cut by Kimberly twice now and both times she's done an amazing job! Both times I brought in pictures to reference what I'd like and Kimberly has given me the perfect cut each time. If you go into a salon with a photo expecting that exact cut, then you're not that bright. I bring in photos mostly because I'm terrible at describing what it is I want, but Kimberly worked with me to make sure I was happy in the end. She used high quality products that made my hair look like it was straight from a magazine. She's also such a pleasure to chat with. As for the salon itself, its bright, clean and welcoming. It definitely has an upscale feel to it with the large floor length mirrors in front of each stylist's station. I was offered water, coffee, tea, or wine while I waited, which is also a nice touch. It's also located in Fed Hill, which is walking distance for me, but there's metered parking out front if you're driving. My only real complaint about M Salon (and it isn't even that big of a deal) is that they are only open Wednesday-Saturday. If you call at any other times, you'll just get their voicemail. Skip calling, and just head over to their website where you can book your appointment online. read more

Extremely disappointed with their service. I paid $300 for a balayage. I brought in a picture of what I was looking for a nice super subtle low starting balayage that faded into a heavier highlight toward the bottom and I walked out of there with clumpy orange highlights so unstrategically placed in like a strip around the circumference of my head. I waited a few days to see if it would grow on me but everytime I looked in the mirror I felt like crying. I called back a few days after the service and they scheduled to get me in for corrections but said they could only do it with the same stylist who messed up my hair in the first place. Then they told me what she would be doing (a little root color and some more toner) and after thinking on that a little I realized this isn't really fixable. Toner can only do so much to orange hair and only for so long. And if any of you have ever had hair colored over bleach you know it's so so temporary. Please please don't go here for balayage. I had a wonderful experience with Kristen this week! I recently moved to Baltimore from DC and was nervous about finding someone to cut my long hair because I had been going to the same stylist in DC for several years. Shortly before moving, I paid a ton of money for the perfect balayage and wanted to make sure whoever trimmed my hair didn't cut off all of the gorgeous color. Kristen did an amazing job cutting off just the right amount and gave me a fantastic blowout afterwards. I think I've found my new go-to place! I read a lot of reviews here before choosing where to go, and am glad I picked M Salon. They have an easy appointment system online with bio's of each of the stylists. I found street parking within a block of the salon on a Friday afternoon and didn't have to wait more than 2 minutes after checking-in. They also have late hours (until 9pm) which is great for professionals like me who can't always scheduled time for haircuts during regular business hours. read more

She's full of information, tips, tricks, and cool products. She really takes her time to make sure she gives you a great cut. At one point in time I questioned whether the expense was worth it. This is THE WORST salon experience I have ever had. I had my hair cut/colored. My hair was brassy, spotty and literally horrible. I asked for bayalage, but no one at this salon knows new techniques. My hair cut took 5 minutes because my stylist was rushing. I asked to have my hair corrected, but I was told all i needed was a toner. Obviously this did NOT fix the uneven color. Just FYI- I created a yelp account for this review. I was horrified that something this highly rated was so horrible. The salon, which had been recommended to me, is gorgeous and well laid-out, with charming touches like a bowl of lollipops at reception and complimentary beverages. The front desk assistant was friendly and offered me water while I waited for my stylist, who was running a little late. My stylist, Kimberly, was pleasant and professional and used products thoughtfully and judiciously. However, the layered haircut she gave me was all over the place. I brought in four photos of the cut I wanted, but alas what I got didn't look like them. Although I had high hopes for my experience at M Salon, which is not cheap, I probably won't go there again or recommend it for a cut, although I hear they do excellent color. A note of credit cards -- the salon does not allow you to leave a tip on credit cards, so if you go, be sure to have cash on hand to tip. read more

I'm writing this review because I had a 5-star ++ experience at M Salon with Christina. It all began when my roommate got a fantastic haircut from Christina at M Salon, and then two weeks later had stellar results with a single-process deep auburn color. I was inspired to check it out, but I wanted to Yelp it first, and because of the mis-guided dollar signs, I thought that M Salon would be significantly pricier than my other options in Baltimore. After calling around to many salons, I realized that the going rate starts around $55 for a woman's cut, and $70 for a woman's single-process color. So if you are on a tight budget like myself, you'll be relieved to know that Christina was happy to agree to a price before-hand, and stuck to it. We agreed on $140 for a cut (long hair with many layers), color (dual-process with glaze!), wash & style (great products-- my hair smells, feels and looks amazing)! I couldn't be happier. I came in with two feet of hair, with dark brown roots that contrasted boldly with my fading light auburn color... I left with a glamorous, summery, natural-looking ombre that enhanced the best of my reds, caramelized the dull reds, and chocolated my roots so it all came together. Christina worked her magic in, and sent me out with gorgeous body-wave curls, a la Gisele. Thank goodness for this place. I no longer need to consider traveling to DC to get my hair looking just like I want it to... I've found my salon 'home' in Baltimore. read more

I have been seeing Kristen for a couple years now and she is amazing. I first found out about her because I was hanging out with a friend who's blonde was always pretty "yellowy" and one day I noticed her hair looked amazing. She told me about Kristen and I booked my next appointment with her. Im now hooked! I am a blonde and always makes my blonde exactly how I want is (more on the ashy side). Even better is she is super sweet! She is also super into her work and doesn't talk much during the highlight process which I personally love. I read my book or enjoy the silence for a couple hours, while drinking some wine! The prices are great, very comparable. You can also tip via Venmo which I find convenient. The salon is always clean and the front desk is nice. You can book online, but with Kristen I recommend doing it as early as possible, she fills up quick! read more

Jill ruined my hair. Had Liz before who did a great job but unfortunately left so I had to pick someone new. I gave her pictures and told her I wanted to be "more blonde" and was left with darker roots and darker highlights. But worse she gave me the most overlayered haircut- I have a straight line of "layers" that goes up to my ears.. it's like a layer of layers. I LITERALLY SHOWED HER A DOZEN PICTURES. I wanted to cry in the chair. I can't even post a picture, I'm too embarrassed. So my hair's been in a bun on the top of my head and will remain there for the next 3 months until these layers grow out. Someone should take away Jill's license. read more

Brittny L. is the best. She really "gets" it, and will give you a cut/color that not only looks great, but will work with your hair type and lifestyle. You can tell she really loves what she does, and is interested in learning as much as possible about her field. Brittny always takes her time with my hair, and is so helpful when it comes to suggesting products to maintain my style/color. I have yet to be disappointed. I couldn't imagine going to anyone else after all of my positive experiences in Brittny's chair! As for the salon itself: it is always clean, the receptionist is always friendly, and I love the fact that drinks and snacks are offered. It's the little things! Parking is not the best in this neighborhood (metered), but the receptionist will replenish your meter if needed, which is great! read more

I have been going to Kelsie ever since I moved back to the Baltimore area 4 years ago. I came in with badly colored hair and she was able to cover it up completely after 2 appointments and have been able to re-add highlights ever since. Everyone there is friendly and helpful to one another. They do have coffee, tea, wine and some snacks available. (for free :) ) Prices are comparable to any other salon in the city and county that I have used in the past. Def. always recommend them to any friends looking for a new salon. read more

I came here to see Shelley after finding her through Groupon. She was nothing short of phenomenal! I am so glad to have found someone who is not only great at doing my hair, but a joy to chat with. What I really appreciated about Shelley was that she didn't just do my hair, she gave me blow drying tips, recommended (but didn't force) products to me, and really gave me a style that worked for me. As someone who admittedly uses their flat iron too much, she cut my hair in a way that would limit that more, and make my hair dry and go. I'm also thrilled to go back to Shelley because her regular price is TOTALLY reasonable, she quoted me $55 for a women's cut. I would recommend anyone check her out at M Salon. Moving to a new city and finding someone you trust with your hair is THE WORST. I went to M Salon for the first time a year ago after friends recommended it. I made an appointment with Dimitri and was floored. I will never go to anyone else in the city. Watching him cut hair is like an art form. His hands and scissors move too quick to follow with your eyes. He custom mixes my color and it looks incredible every time! I want someone doing my hair that I can go into the salon, sit down, say brown and short and let him work his magic and Dimitri does it everytime. I've never gone in with a photo or exact description of what I want yet I always leave with the most perfect cut and color. The staff overall is incredible and super talented. I had my hair cut by Kimberly and I was so happy with it! She really listened to what I wanted and explained how she would tailor the cut to my hair (which is super wavy/frizzy and fine). She asked me as she went how I was feeling about the cut. It ended up giving my hair a lot more movement and texture and the products she used really reduced the frizz. She really took her time--definitely over an hour--to make sure it was just right. $65 is a little on the pricey side but I've paid more and been less satisfied at other salons. I first went to M Salon a couple years back and had my hair cut from a lengthy below shoulder length to pixie short. Marion did a fantastic job, so I went back to her 3 or 4 times during the two years I lived in Baltimore. Hands down, Marion is the best stylist I've ever had. She can do all the styles--and well. She did a great pixie cut, and awesome highlights/cuts while my hair was growing out. If you want a cut that's going to look great for a long time, she's your lady. She has a super fun personality and is great to talk to, plus the rest of the stylists were very welcoming. They really get to know you. I have been having my hair colored and cut with Lindsay for almost a year. I moved back into the city and was in search of a new stylist and was lucky to find her! Lindsay specializes in ombre and balayage, and I am always so happy after my appointment with her. She picks shades and tones that compliment my natural hair color and skin complexion. I always recommend her to people who have complimented my hair. The salon always looks clean, and feels inviting. I would agree- the only bummer is you have to tip with cash. The salon is beautiful, clean and has amazing customer service (i.e. free coffee and wine galore) but the true gem is Christina! She is AMAZING. This girl knows what she is doing, whether it is women's or men's cuts (my boyfriend goes and tells me her shape up is as good as his old barber in the hood of Baltimore).
