I walked here during a snow storm that prevented me from driving to my usual salon. Nice enough people, but that's not factoring into my review of their performance. Balance is probably great -- IF you have naturally straight hair. No good if you have literally any other texture hair. My thick, dense, curly hair was totally mishandled. I went home, showered out all the zillion little cut hairs left within my locks and on my shoulders, and then got a really good look at a really bad haircut. They made me look like an A-framed poodle having a stroke. When I went back to my usual salon I was told: "They gave you an expert haircut for somebody else -- somebody WITHOUT your hair!" Any wavy, curly, coily girls: spend your $100 elsewhere! And, lastly, let me give a preemptive no thank you: I don't need any snarky responses or a "Who, me??!" from the owners or employees of Balance who read this review. I had the worst haircut of my life two months ago at Balance. The stylist, if you could call her that, did not listen to anything I asked for and gave me the same haircut as herself - an outdated style I would never have asked for as it is ugly and doesn't work with my hair type whatsoever. It will be 6 months to a year before my hair has recovered from the extraordinary amount she took off. I've been so angry every single day since this happened and I look awful/very aged. I truly don't understand how this person has this job or how this salon is in business. I would never recommend this place to anyone, not even a bald person. It has a very cool vibe, and a welcoming atmosphere in a clean and covid safe environment. Everyone wore masks, and if you needed a mask, they had them right there for you. I went here for the first time on Saturday. Woody was my stylist and he did such an amazing job. He helped me figure out what I wanted and executed it perfectly and was so kind in the process! Recently, my hair has become drier/more coarse- he gave me great tips to improve the health of my hair. I highly recommend this salon. Had a thoroughly wonderful experience from start to finish at Balance the Salon. Stylists in this salon are both thoughtful and personable while providing excellent hairstyling and care. Matt, the owner, is very evidently considerate and caring to his stylists. Although both he and Heather were available at the time I needed a cut and I had no preference between them, he recommended Heather. Heather did my hair and it turned out beautifully. A great salon in an amazingly convenient location, at Remington Row. Fortunately, they we're able to squeeze me in on a Friday evening. The salon looks beautiful and smells fantastic, and the staff were very friendly. I got my hair cut by Heather - I cut off a lot, and Heather did a great job making sure it got to the length I wanted, even with my curls. Balance is definitely one of the best salons in the Baltimore area. They use great products, have a great staff and are clean. I have asian hair and its been difficult to find someone who knows how to cut my hair. I go to Ken and he knows what he is doing. I always feel like he brings my dull hair back to life whenver I need a cut. The staff knows how to treat their customers too. When i was all done and ready to pay, I asked about leaving a tip. There are no signs that say tips must be in cash, nor did they go out of the way to point this out. I think this shows that they are loyal to their customers and they aren't about nickel and dime-ing their customers. Great salon! they are my go- to for sure. read more

The salon is very clean and smells so amazing when you walk in. I have been having a hard time finding a stylist since April, so I was in desperate need of highlights and a cut. I found this salon on Google, and then did research by going over Yelp reviews. Everything I read was positive. I was scheduled with Heather and she was a complete doll. She did my highlights, then washed my hair and did a blow dry. We decided to cut my hair dry since I wanted to keep as much length as possible. As we finished drying, the power went off on the entire block. The staff here handled the power outage as best as they could. They really did. One stylist moved his client outside on the street benches (there was still some light out) and finished his cut outside. Then the rest of the stylists moved their clients outside to complete their cuts. It was unconventional, but it was what it was. It was disappointing as a customer only having a hand mirror to look at the finished product when you have paid so much money for services. By the time I left, the salon, it was dark so I was not able to fully see my hair (full front and back) until I got home. I am pretty simple with my hair maintenance and this experience, while no fault of Balance, was disappointing. I don't get to treat my myself too often to salon services. I am not one of those clients you will get rich off of because I come in each month and spend $300. So salon trips are special for me and a time to relax and enjoy myself and when I do get to go, I like to do it up. It would have been nice to have been offered a discount of services since my hair was finished outside and my hair was unfinished when I left, or even a discount off of a future service with the salon. Other than that, I have no complaints. Also, they do validate parking in their garage (bonus), however with the power being out, I could not leave the garage (ticket reader would not ready my ticket) and was stuck at the ticket booth for about 15 minutes until someone rescued me. I can't say enough wonderful things about Balance the Salon and especially my stylist, Woody! I've been dying my hair for many years and just recently moved to the Baltimore area. I decided to try out Balance since they use Aveda hair color products. Woody and I discussed playing with some new colors in my hair, and I put my complete faith in him that it would turn out great. And it did! Risa (another stylist) referred to the final coloring as "Rising Pheonix", and I definitely felt so great with my new color and a touch-up hair cut. Woody is my new best friend, and I would highly recommend him for anyone who wants some coloring done. The salon itself was very clean, relaxing, and overall a very pleasant experience. This was my first experience with this salon, because I hadn't found a place that really suited my needs. Based on the other reviews of this particular place it intrigued me to try it out. I wanted quality work and still not break my wallet doing it. The location is definitely something you might pass by and not notice. It's definitely worth checking because from the moment I walked in the door, it was great service. I was greeted by my stylist, Woody, who was very nice. Since I'm half Asian and half Mexican, I have very full, thick hair. It's not always the easiest to manage, so for Woody to not only to give me a cut to relieve some of the volume, as well as the weight, it was wonderful. I was still able to keep the length I wanted and it looks silky smooth now. I will definitely be going in the next time I need a cut and I would recommend the place as well. read more

All my life, I've never been one to "have" to go back to the same hairdresser -- until now. I've been to Balance three times now to get my hair cut and will continue to go back in the future. I've tried various other places and methods ... sprout, supercuts, cutting my hair myself... and but Balance gives me the best haircut out of all of them. Here are some of the reasons I like them: 1. They are open late so I can get an appointment after work (7:30pm appointment!! amazing!) 2. I love how they have designed their salon, so it's pretty to look at while you wait for your appointment 3. Parking is super easy and free in a lot right outside their salon, especially for those later appointments 4. They also have nice artwork on the walls 5. I really like how they ('they' meaning my hair dresser Debbie) cut my hair. I don't know what they do differently than other places I've gone to but I feel it always comes out nice and smelling really good. I moved to Philly in the summer and still make time to get my hair cut at Balance when I'm in Baltimore to see friends, etc. Terrific cut, style, color, etc--this is the place for high quality service. It is a boutique salon and they focus on what they do best, hair. The staff--from receptionist and on--is incredibly warm and helpful. The salon itself is well designed and relaxing. I love their products too--but you won't find anyone trying to push it on you like some salons. I've referred several friends over the years, and they are all fans of Balance. read more

I learned of balance three years ago when they began coming to Loyola's Relay For Life event to do the hair donations for free- and also offering free touch-ups to the students who donate. How cool is it of them to come out at 1 AM to cut off ponytails free of charge? I love that they support the cause so I decided to support them! I've never been really picky about my hair or who cuts it but I've been to Balance at least three times for my haircuts and I've never had a complaint! They're always very friendly and welcoming, even on the phone when I call to make the appointment (which I definitely recommend, they get pretty booked). They always listen carefully to what I want done and nail it perfectly! The last two times, Ken has cut my hair. He's a great stylist and fun to chat with while he works. I really like that he keeps checking throughout the whole process that I'm liking what's happening- no nasty surprises at the end! My stylist is Matt, the owner. I've been seeing him every 6 weeks for years. I've never had a bad experience. I am half Asian, half Caucasian, so my hair (thick, mostly straight with a little wave) has always been a challenge to hairdressers and barbers alike. During my first appointment with Matt's stylists, I was able to have a meaningful technical conversation with them about my hair type and what cuts would be good and look good and be easy to maintain. Since moving to the Baltimore area last year, I have been unable to find a salon to suit me. .After researching online, I decided to give this place a try. The salon is beautiful, and I love the products that they use. Amy at the front desk was so friendly, and made me feel welcome as soon as I came in the door. Matt did my hair perfectly after a lengthy discussion on what was best for me and my lifestyle. I visited the Salon for the first time a couple months ago and had my first cut with Matt. First of all, the staff was incredible, everyone smiled and engaged me and made me feel welcome (also it's a beautiful salon). Second of all, I rarely ever go anywhere to get my hair cut because I'm super lazy, also I've had so many bad hair cuts because I have curly hair so I kind of avoid it all together, I maybe get my hair cut one, maximum twice a year. I'm a natural redhead and I don't color my hair so I don't have a need for much upkeep. About a year and a half ago I cut all my hair off into a pixi cut (which I loved) but the grow out process has been a long and frustrating one, and on top of that I accidentally did some heat damage to my hair earlier in the year. A friend of mine recommended Balance, and Matt, and I just went for it. He really listened to me and explained everything to me. We talked about why he wanted to cut it the way he did and I trusted him. I loved my hair cut. I waited a little bit to write a review because I wanted to see how it grew out, and it's been perfect! When my hairdresser moved away, I was lost. She was the sort of stylist that I could sit down, and tell her to do whatever she felt like, and I was happy every time. I was in hair-love. I had a couple decent experiences after she left, but was never thrilled with my hair. A friend at work recommended that I see Ken at Balance, and hair-cupid totally struck again. Ken listened to all the details about what I wanted from a hair-cut, what my lifestyle was, and what kind of time and effort I put into my hair. The result: I love my hair. He used the razor and did some significant texturing and thinning of my hair. He knew exactly what he was doing, and despite my fear that he was cutting too much hair, I was so pleased with the style and have since been pleased with the way my hair has grown since then. I went back in for a bang-trim a few weeks ago. He squeezed me in between appointments, but I never felt rushed. He did a great job! In addition to his skill, I am very pleased with how friendly the front desk staff has been. And, I was delightfully surprised that Matt , the owner, even called to check-in with me about experience and make sure I was happy with my cut. I was lucky enough to stumble upon Balance when I lived near their prior location, and even with multiple moves of my own in since, keep coming back to Ken. He's talented, always turns my ideas into their best iteration, and takes his craft seriously. Beyond that, I've never seen a bad haircut or color walk out the door at Balance, and feel completely at ease when I'm there. I won't mention the specific stylist's name but this was the worst cut I've ever received. I have extremely thick wavy hair and she did a blunt straight cut. I also had one piece in the back that was longer and had to get my coworker to cut it off because my hair was so uneven! I also had highlights done and while the end result looked good (much better than the cut) I was there for about 3 hours as she had to fix it and put toner in, having me panicked the entire time. I have been going to Balance for years and will never go anywhere else. I always hated going into a salon because so many places have such a pretentious vibe and left me feeling uncomfortable. At Balance you can have a cup of tea while you wait and feel at home knowing that you are valued as a client. I have recommended several friends and they have all been happy with their cuts and coloring services. Everyone there is extremely talented and wants you to leave feeling confident that you acheived the goal you were striving for. My stylist, Britney, has worked with me over the years transform my hair from long and curly (a complete mess) into a short, sleek, styled work of art. I've never been happier with my hair. As for their products, an Italian brand called Davines- I can't say I've ever used a shampoo that I sincerely felt the difference it made on my hair like Davines does. What are you waiting for? I went to Balance on a recommendation after I couldn't get into my regular salon (which btw is fabulous and is also in Roland Park). The salon itself was nice and clean. I took the first appointment that fit my schedule and maybe I should have asked more questions about the stylist's level. I wound up with Bethany and although she was pleasant and seemed competent, she gave me a pretty bad highlight along with the worst cut I may have ever gotten. I got a significant amount of length cut off and although I wanted to wear it wavy and airdried, i thought it was odd that she didn't dry it and then finish the cut to make sure it was good. My hair looks like a child cut it straight across. There is no shaping and therefor I cannot wear it dried straight without looking like I have a cut from the 90s. The highlight color was fine but it wasn't close to the roots so it was like I had immediate outgrowth. Needless to say I've been trying to get into my regular stylist since this mishap happened 6 weeks ago so she can clean up the mess. On a positive note, the owner or front desk attendant did call appx a week after my appointment to check in. If only I had answered my phone I might have told them my story. Bottom line - go to the salon, but be careful who you choose as your stylist. read more

When I got there: lovely greeting from front desk and on to a hot cup of coffee before my appointment. I just went to Balance for the first time, and I was really impressed. I normally don't go to small salons because I feel like they're a bit pretentious, but everyone I talked to was incredibly friendly, great to talk to, and fabulous at what they do. Everyone I saw come in was happy and had a personal relationship with their stylist, and overall it was a friendly, chill atmosphere. There was a great range of ages, and customers were male as well as female, but everyone got the same dedicated, personal treatment. Although chain salons (even some higher end chains) can give you a hair cut, at Balance you'll get a stylist you can trust and will look forward to going back to again and again. Normally I'm a bit picky with my hair, and will tell the stylist exactly what I want, but at Balance they've proven themselves. I give them free reign on my head, and love the outcome! When I was there the woman across from me asked her stylist what he thought should get done to her hair. She listened to him, agreed completely, and got a great result, so it seems I'm not the only one who trusts them.
