Our favorite doughnut shop in the Charlotte area! So glad we found this place. Despite that the shop was within 15 minutes of closing, they still had a large selection of doughnuts. Their cake doughnuts were really like cake, not dense, dry or crumbly. I had a blueberry cake which was not just made with a blueberry cake mix but also topped with a not too sweet blueberry glaze. Their filled, raised doughnut was large and filled with a wonderful vanilla cream as the the raspberry filled doughnut. They have the BEST donut holes period. Their regular s are wonderful, dense enough to allow you to enjoy them, but moist and fluffy so you aren't reaching for a drink with every bite. Inside is old school. The place isn't anything to look at, it's not trendy, it's not posh, its just there to make good donuts. Coffee is just a cup of regular Joe. No pumpkin spice latte mochas here. These are by far the best donuts I've had in the Charlotte area. They are light and fluffy and not overly sweet. Selection is limited, but that doesn't bother me. This is a no frills, classic donut shop..... Don't expect fancy coffee drinks here. They do have a selection of sore cream donuts, raised donuts, apples fritters, and a few other pastries. There was a slight crunch to the outer shell while boasting a heavenly cinnamon glaze. The interior was a soft and chewy delight with just the right amount of apples without that slimy jelly so often found in inferior fritters. Stopped by in the morning after doing a search for quick and easy breakfast food, and knowing I missed out on National Doughnut Day, I figured I'd get my fix here without all the crazy lines and hoopla. Being tucked away in a shopping center in Pineville, there was no wait, so I entered hoping to get the full experience and browse around. There weren't too many options, which was fine, but I thought I'd reserve the right to ask a couple of questions and compare them to the menu prices as they charge differently per style of dougnut. Not sure if it was the owner or employee, but the lady was not friendly and almost rude when I started to ask questions about some of the options. It felt like she wanted me to leave despite nobody else around, so I felt rushed but wanted to try the staples. I ordered the original glazed, a chocolate covered white cream filled doughnut, and the chocolate covered buttermilk doughnut. The original glaze was cold and meh (sorry, high expectations from Krispy Kreme) and the cream filled doughnut was ok, nothing amazing. The buttermilk was the best as it was moist and had the cake-y cruller consistency. If I was in the area, maybe I'd go back to pick more of these up, but not going out of my way. My family and I were excited to visit this donut shop as we had seen it on a "Top 5" list of donut shops in the Charlotte area. However, we were sorely disappointed. The shop wasn't the cleanest and definitely needed to be updated. The staff wasn't incredibly friendly, either. As far as the donuts go, they were average. Granted, our family visited the shop a little later in the morning (around 10:00am), but the donuts were far from hot and fresh. This is what Dunkin Donuts USED to be when they actually had doughnut chefs working at each store (you know, the 'Time to Make the Donuts Guy'). Fresh, delicious doughnuts! Their yeast style donuts are light and chewy, like they should be! You won't find the massive variety of doughnuts like to do at DD... but that's because DD uses the Pizza Hut mentality of "dazzle them with bizarre variety to distract them from the fact your product sucks," however, what they do have is fantastic! Try the apple fritter or cinnamon roll if your blood sugar level is a tad low. Wow! As has been mentioned before, this place is a mom & pop store. Open only M-Sa until noon and tucked away next to the Goodyear on S. Polk St, it's easy to miss it. I love the fact they throw in some doughnut holes with every order. You wouldn't see DD doing anything like that! This place was the best/worst discovery we made in South Charlotte in the past two years. Best because the doughnuts are awesome... worst for our waist lines!! EDIT: THEY ARE OPEN SUNDAYS NOW! YEAH!! Also, get there early... we got there at 11:40 one Saturday and they were out of almost every good kind of donuts and didn't have any free donut holes left. EDIT AGAIN! Let's start with a fact.... Donuts are fried. They're greasy by nature - now that we have that behind us - donuts from MJs are downright delicious!!!! Apple fritter dreams are made here. Not necessarily into the cake donuts, but those fritters..... YUM. Even the Boston cream are noteworthy - not like the chain donut places where you can almost taste it before you take the bite - these are unique and clearly not skimpy on frosting or filling. Our toddler is obsessed and even he's done with ONE. (Whereas you need about 3 of the others to get him to say that). These are BIG and delicious.
