Mei has been my go-to stylist over 6 years. I have thick and slightly frizzy hair, prior to Mei my stylists had always used razors to thin out my hair, and that would work for a short time, but eventually my hair would grow out frizzy again. It wasn't till I lived in Japan where I found great stylists that were able to cut and thin out my hair in a way that wouldn't leave it poofy. When I moved back in 2008, I was desperate to find a hairstylist who had the same care and services. I'm so glad I met Mei. I've gotten services from hair cuts to perms, and everything in between. I love that Mei has put up with my back and forth in hair color, straight and digital perm, and always gives me honest feedback and suggestions for what works best for me vs what I think I might want to try in the moment. I've been growing out my hair to donate and then covid happened so I didn't go to the salon in a long time. I finally went the other day and LOVE my new haircut by Ai! My husband got his hair cut by Yama and loves it, too! The whole ambience was still warm as ever and the stylists were so friendly and professional. Everything was super clean and I could tell that they took extra care by the chairs being individually wrapped, and the shampoo stations having dividers. She's very accommodating with scheduling; I text her the week I plan to come and she always makes it happen. She also knows a lot about hair and manages to style my stubbornly straight and thick Asian hair into some awesome looks. After doing some research and reading some reviews, I decided to get my hair cut at M-irror Salon with Ai. Their online appointment system was easy to use, and the salon was easy to find. I was able to park in front, though I did have an 8am appointment. Learning from my past mistakes, I made sure to have photos of what style I wanted. I consulted with Ai and she was friendly and easy to talk to, and made sure to clarify. They were gentle while shampooing and my haircut went along easily. They also had the cutest tool bag! Cla is a the best! I've been going to her for a few years now, since she was still at Salon Mei. She knows exactly what I like. I pretty much just show her a picture of what I want to give her an idea, then I just leave her to do the rest - whatever she thinks is best, I let her do. I'm not sure if it's because I don't care anymore, or because I trust her... Either way, she always does a great job and I'm never disappointed :-)) The salon itself is nice as well. After getting the absolute worst hair cut in the world (see previous hair cut review), I immediately booked a reservation at M-irror Salon. The best part is that I was able to make this appointment, in the middle of the night in the comfort of my bed. Their online reservation system is the best and more people should do this! Anyways, my hair was so crooked when I came I was expecting them to all laugh at how bad my hair looked. Instead, they all were very sympathetic and helped me get my hair back to a better style. I walked out of there with a much shorter hair cut and it was amazing. The salon is very calming, the music isn't too loud, they give you a massage and overall it's just such a nice place to go. I only went here for a consultation but was impressed enough with their customer service that I wanted to write a review anyways. I called and told them I was interested in a digital perm, but they asked if my hair is highlighted (it is) so they wanted to see me. After taking a look at my hair they recommended that I wait until my bleached hair is cut off before I get a digital perm. I always reminisce about the haircuts I received during my one month stay in Taiwan, and all the other haircuts I've received in Asia. I loved the way they style your hair according to the shape of your face/head. When they grow out, it still looks just as beautiful as the 1st day you walked out of the salon. I've been searching for a real hair-stylist who could bring me back those fond memories, and I finally found her after 10 years at M-irror. I first learned about Ai from a co-worker who has been going to her a few times, and each time I see her hair it's shiny, glossy and nicely cut. I finally gave in and made an appointment to see Ai. Ai is extremely personable and sweet to work with. She immediately welcomed me into the salon, shampooed my hair (love the minty shampoo) and sat me down on her chair. We talked about what I was looking for (I have thin hair, so I needed some body/shape), and she immediately went to work. As she was cutting, she was explaining to me what she was doing. At the end, I LOVED my haircut. Their prices are very reasonable compared to other comparable salons in town ($60/haircut vs. $75/haircut at Dada Salon). I also enjoyed the minty shampoo so much that I bought my own bottle & conditioner to take home to enjoy. I had referred my sister to see Ai, and she went a week before this review and loves her new color technique and style. I always respect a hairstylist who treats each customer respectfully and worthwhile. I highly recommend all my friends & fellow yelpers to check them out! [Location & Parking] This salon used to be Terra by Afloat. Everything (the interior, workers) are all still the same from Terra but they just changed their name. If you've never been to the salon before, keep your eyes open for a salon on the right because this place can be missed (sadly there's no big signage). Parking is free and located right outside of their salon. There are no painted stalls so be sure to angle park your car if you drive. [Service] If you're worried about the language barrier,let me assure you that they speak decent English. Once you arrive, if you're a new customer, you fill out an info sheet. Then they wash your hair. It feels so nice when they wash and massage your scalp. My hair stylist is Yama and he did a great job with my haircut. Before seeing him, my hair was dull, flat, with split ends. I asked him to layer and thin my hair out for me and it looks so much better. [Overall] The cost of my haircut was ~$60 which is not too bad for haircut and wash. If you're looking to have an "asian" hairstyle, I highly recommend coming to this salon. The Japanese hair salon I like was fully booked, so I had my haircut done here. The price was $85 including tax and tip, twice expensive as the salon I like, but comes with unsatisfying customer service. The male stylist was impatient and arrogant. When discussing about how to cut my bangs, I was hesitated if I should have my bangs cut shorter. I asked him if he could show me a picture of how it looks with short bangs. The stylist goes: I can cut any style, then gave me a magazine and went away... I came out of the hair salon looking 5 years older. Definitely not recommend! read more

I had requested someone experienced with balayage & color. She was honest and told me her name & to look over her photos to decide if I would like to book with her. Needless to say, she did such an amazing job on my hair!! She was very professional, sweet and assured me I was in great hands with her! I really enjoyed my service with her and her willingness to help me achieve the look and color tone I was going for. So happy I came here for a hair cut and color! Yama chan was my stylist and he is awesome! My hair before coming in was pretty bad from box hair color (;__;) and I needed a haircut pretty badly..my layers grew out and my hair was heavy and I was pretty sweaty all the time :(. Yama chan took the time to look at my hair and consult on color and what would work well. I wanted a light color and he was able to make it a beautiful light brown without bleaching it! I cannot sing the praises for this salon enough. I started going here because my BFF recommended it when it was Terra, and I was wary at first, but Mei has only surpassed my expectations. She now owns M-irror, and the experience is just as good, if not better. I moved to NYC about a year ago, and since then, have been really struggling to find a good salon that specializes in Asian hair (growing up in HI, who knew that was a "thing"?!). So on this trip home, my first since moving, I had to make sure to get a trim with Mei. Of course I was very last minute about it, so I went the same day I was leaving back to NYC, but she took me with very little notice and gave me a quick trim. Look no further! I didn't think this would be the salon I continuously go to because we all know how hard it is to stick with one. I thankfully found my dream hair guy here, Yamachan. He works very well with my hair. He knows how it's going to grow back and in what shape and condition it will be in after the next three months goes by. So it is hard to ask for someone who just gets it and understands how hard it is to maintain my hair. My favorite part during my hair appointment is the atmosphere and music. Very calm not a lot of gossip around, good music (good music helps me feel confident), and of course soft comfortable chairs. Had the honor of getting my haircut by Yama Chan, very thorough and learns about your hair before the chopping begins. I really appreciated how he asked about my hair part and naturally how my hair is because let's face it, although you may love a hair style it may not work on you and Yama Chan made sure to explain that. Chose a style that would work with my hair and face and fit what I wanted. He didn't rush but also didn't take forever. Always double checked his work over and over. One thing for me is I like when hairdressers are considerate of my ears. He carefully worked around them and made sure he didn't hit them all the time, unlike some others out there. Salon overall was very clean and sanitary. Had a chic simplistic vibe. I like the little things like getting a beverage and a blanket put over your legs if it's too cold in there.
