I should of known something bad was going to happen when I saw how fast my technician was moving on mother's day weekend... I walk into the salon and it looks nice. I'm greeted by two young girls working the front desk. I see complementary cake and coffee as well as long stem roses for moms. All nice touches. It goes downhill once i sit with the male technician who I can sense is in a rush but i give him a chance. His station or the one he was using at least didn't look very clean. He starts removing my SNS polish in a way I've never seen....by using a fake nail and cuticle clippers. He replied this is faster than soaking and easier sense most of the polish on my nails was already coming off. I didn't like how rushed he seemed and sure enough, when he can't remove my polish with the fake nail he presses even harder with the cuticle clippers and dents the middle of my thumb nail so deep that it does release blood. It hurt so bad I actually yelled out ouch. Whats crazy is he didn't even apologize at first. He simply said theres no blood, thats nail polish and you'll be fine. I said I will be fine but thats still not cool. I showed him the actually blood and he said a very insincere sorry in response. He put antiseptic on it which stinged. I told him I didnt think it was sanitary for me to continue with the powder but he seemed unconcerned. I then asked for a design on my big toes and he responded I dont know how to do designs....thats fine. Can you maybe ask someone who does????? I completed my service in a completely different demeanor than when I arrived being concered about my nail the whole time and I still am. I have never had anything like this happen to me before. If you come here I strongly suggest making an appointment with someone who is recommended by Yelp or a friend. Visited this place last week with my child and because we were trying it out for the first time , only she had her nails and toes done. The name on here says GL nail salon but it's M&Q nail salon. First thing I was thrown off by was that it stated that they opened at 9am, however only one tech was there at 9am. The other techs like 2 of them came rushing in around 9:30 and that's when we were served. My child had shown 3 pictures of acrylic designs she wanted and the nail tech kept saying she couldn't do any of them and then she finally gave up and said she'll just take what she can do. It was so basic design. The total was $115 for a full set and a pedicure. We will probably give it another chance just with another nail tech. read more

It's like they get worse and worse. Anthony did my nails and after waiting 30mins coming in at 4 for my 4pm appointment. I told him I wanted skinny square 2 times! Even while he was filing I said "can you file down some more? Cause I want a skinny square" he brushed it off saying that he'll file a lot more when he applies the acrylic. I have always had the best experience at GL Salon--as have all my friends. The place is cleanly, ran well, and efficient. Even when you don't have an appointment, they can usually see you very quickly. Tom has done my nails a couple times and I've always neen pleased--he doesn't speak much English but he has a sweet spirit, and always takes his time which I appreciate. Im writing this review while getting said pedicure actually. :) Other things: - I was able to get an appointment at 3:40on a Monday (well, I called at 3:15 and they told me to come in at :40). - It smells heavily of chemicals in here. - blowout looks really good and just like I requested (smooth with body and round brush curls at the bottom) - the hairdresser stopped a couple moments in to do a walk-in eyebrow job. It was slightly annoying but considering she ended up doing the blowout quickly I'm not complaining. :) - if I lived in the area I would be here ALL THE TIME. I rarely make time to do both blowout *and* nails but this is a rare salon that does both. Got a pedicure on Monday she cut my nail too short on the side ripped it off when I told her it was hurting she said I had an ingrown nail. I did not have one coming here. She then tried to tell me I couldn't put shoes on for an hour, never have I ever herd of such a thing. I now have an infection in my toe that I'm trying to cure from her ripping part of my nail off. The tech that worked on my nails made me bleed and it was VERY painful! She was in a rush and was very aggressive trying to remove the acrylic. It was all in all a disaster! The second time I went in was today 12/23/2020. I was getting my car serviced next door and since they were near by, I thought I would go in. I went with out an appointment but they were able to take me. They were busy because it was Christmas so the tech that worked on my nails, again was in a rush and didn't really focus on what I wanted and she just did the quickest method. Took my daughter to get a full set of acrylic nails which is advertised on their site for $25. I left and came back to pick her up. She calls me to come in because they were charging her $50. Went in and they said it is $50 because they choose to use gel polish. Even then the website says $35 for shellac full set $35. Then they say since it's her first time they'll only charge her $40. Two different owners and two very different types of service. The previous owner (GAM) was kind and cared about the service provided and her customers. The customer service at M & Q Hair & Nail Spa is complete crap. They did a good job on my full set and my pedicure, but heaven forbid you ask them to change the color after deciding you don't like it after you are trying something new. I got nothing but attitude and a lecture for not telling them ahead of time. I did not ask them to do it for free. I literally told them they did a great job but I just couldn't make myself like the color and said I will pay for the color change. This is my first review ever and I no longer care if I have to drive miles out of the way I will never come to this place again. I did tip both people ten dollars each because of the work done, but to literally argue and be rude and lecture me because of a frickin color change request.... Not to mention the prices are crap too. Way too much for crap service!!!! I made an appointment with Gem, who came highly recommended in Facebook land. When I arrived Gem was ready for me. I hadn't had a hair cut in about a year (but my hair doesn't grow fast), and I can't remember the last time I had a good hair cut. I have anxiety about getting my hair cut because I have hereditary hair lost and am quit embarrassed about it. Also, every time I go to a hair salon they try to sell me some hair growth product. Gem asked me what I wanted and listened to my concern. She acted knowledgeable about what to do. I sat down in the chair and another lady walked up to Gem and was talking in hushed tones right behind me. This made me unnerved and I thought, "well, I won't be coming back here". . However, after that lady left Gem was personable and gave me a great haircut. I will go back to Gem, and am very happy with the haircut I received. read more

I just moved to the area and am looking for a nail salon as the weather gets nicer. Decided to try this place out while my mom is in town. Should've spent half the money and gone to Walmart instead... The woman doing her services was friendly enough and spent an appropriate amount of time on her for the money they charge. The man doing my nails however, sped through my pedicure, didn't do half of the things the woman with my mom did, and finished 15 minutes before her (even though they started at the same time). He didn't say a word, another employee had to offer water, and the 30 second massage felt like it was given by a limp noodle rather than hands. $26 for a piss poor 10 minute pedicure. I won't be back. Oh! And the movie playing on the tv featured Rob Schneider trying out dildos in the rear. Interesting movie choice for a salon. read more

I love My as a nail tech as she always does great work, however, the overall quality of the salon and management is entirely horrible. The salon owner is inauthentic and makes it very clear whether one is welcome or net depending not on how much you spend or how often you patron the establishment, but by the amount of melanin contained within your skin. I'd been a customer here for several months with limited direct interactions with her, however, I was able to observe and listen in on her conversations. Growing up in Montbello with many Asian friends taught me, not only to listen well, and I picked up on the language. Yes, I understand what you're saying, lady. She is condescending and rude. At first, I thought I caught her on a bad day, turns out... nope, that's her personality. Ok. No worries. I can work around that as long as I have a great nail tech and no interaction with her. In comes My. She's so awesome! She does my mani/pedis flawlessly every time and they last so long. I really get mileage out of them and her time is worth every dime. I am very busy and she is always able to work with my schedule. My last visit, December 2017, was not only humiliating but infuriating and was my last to this establishment. I called the day before to inquire about My's last appointment availability for the day. I was told she had an opening at 5p. Services? Mani- Dip, Pedi- gel equals time. My knows me, knows my services, and knows this will take some time. I arrived at 450p and My informed me she'd be with me after the walk-in she'd had was finished. I replied, ok. She prepped my pedi station. I sat at the pedi station for 25 minutes listening to the sounds of the salon. The woman My was with came in for full services: hair, mani, pedi, and waxing. She was going to be a while. In between her hair cut and wax, she performed my pedi. I asked her if she'd have time to complete my nail service today, if not, I could come back tomorrow. She said no, it was ok and apologized. Said the walk-in was assigned to her and she didn't know it would take as long as it had. 55 minutes. still waiting for my nail services. 65 minutes... nail services begin. A young woman walks in and asks for a pedicure. She tells about her horror story at another nail salon in the area. The owner listens intently and proceeds to engage in the gossip with the other patrons. She tells the woman it was good she came here because she hears terrible things about "them". WHAT? Near the middle if my dip nail service, the owner walks up to me and demands that I pay now for all of my services before they're all completed. ?? This, I've never done anywhere at any salon, including this one. Highly irregular. When asked why, what is the reason, even while I'm in the middle of my service which my nails are not to be disturbed, she stated because I need you to do it now because we're about to close. Mind you, there were other patrons present, and they weren't asked to do so, even Miss Four Services. Nope. Just me. My, apologized again. This caused me to ask her what's going on. Before she could answer, I heard the owner as the only other Black patron to do the same thing. Since she was there for the first time (nightmare nail Lady), my guess is she may have assumed this was how they do things here... nope. I side-eyed the owner, asked her why today when she knows I'm in here every other Saturday for the past 9 mos. She said, "I only remember seeing you twice before." What?? I have receipts!!! Seriously??? Ok!! I nodded. Ok. I know this song. No worries. I will not be back to listen to the hook. Although I adore My, I had to leave and will not return. Since then, I've spoken to many other women to gauge their experiences, and they've experienced many of the same if not worse from nail mishaps to outright discrimination of many WOCs to what I experienced. I was delighted to find a quality establishment near my home. I know I'll need t keep looking because this is not it. GL Salon needs a lot to become a truly stellar establishment and choice place in my community.
