Unethical and predatory towing experience -- beware! The towing company had already agreed with my apartment complex that the release fee for my car would be $264. I immediately took a rideshare to their office to make the payment. But just as I arrived, the driver suddenly sped off with my car, despite the prior agreement -- and they ended up charging me $450, including over $100 in fake storage fees, even though I arrived at the office at the exact same time as the vehicle. The car was never actually stored. I tried to talk to them and asked why they broke the agreement and rushed away, but they refused to engage. Their attitude was hostile, arrogant, and completely unprofessional. There were two men and one woman involved. All of them pretended to "check with someone" but were clearly just stalling. No one took responsibility, and none of them cared about fairness or honesty. When I tried to discuss this, the staff -- two men and one woman -- refused to communicate, mocked me to my face, and laughed at me while I was visibly upset. It was disgusting and humiliating. They acted more like a gang than a legitimate business -- no respect for agreements, no communication, just extortion and delay tactics. Absolutely disgraceful. I'll be filing formal complaints with local consumer protection authorities. read more

Terrible company. Don't use them. I waited 1.5 hrs for the tow truck to come. I had to leave to pick up.my child. They finally called me to tell me the driver was on his way. My 18-year-old son was in an accident. He'd only had his license for two months. The Berkeley cop who responded called M&A to tow his car. My son didn't know to just have it towed to our nearby home. The driver said "We can store it for you at our facility" never mentioning storage fees. Getting the car towed onto the street near M&A the next day, plus storage fees, they charged us $600. It's dirty and looks run down. The graffiti doesn't help. The lady who helped me in the front was nice, but tried to charge me an extra day. I'm not the one sweetie. I read EVERYTHING! I was driving when I felt my car shaking so I pull over and I see my cars rear tire turned out to be completely flat! I had no spare and it was late at night so I called statefarm, they had referred me to M&A Towing. I am so glad that they had sent them over to my location. They knew exactly where I was so there was no issues with them finding me. The dispatcher said the ETA would be around 30-45 minutes. The tow truck driver arrived to my location in 20 minutes! I had to Uber back to my house and once I got there my car was already being dropped off by the driver. He even recommended a couple of affordable tire shops in the area for tire replacement. My car was towed by this company during sweep day my fault for not moving I take responsibility but they'll try to make keys for your car because they auction cars off if it sits there for over 30 days... I picked my car up the very next day for $500 and tried to open the driver side door with my key and my key did not work, Because someone jammed it trying to open it to make a key way before 30 days. I've been given the run around as far as fixing and reimbursement for my door lock. I was already charged $500 for a less than 24hr tow. So you can imagine my frustration. I had borrowed a friend's car and come the next morning the engine wouldn't turn over. I called AAA and was told that my service with them had "expired" and I was on my own. I on-line searched for a Service Company on the same major road I was on and got M&A Towing. I told them the problem and that I would be paying out of pocket. They quoted me $65 for the service call, got to me within 20 minutes, had a two man team, and had me out on the road in a few minutes. Very nice, respectful, didn't want me to get out of the car and had a bright shiny truck. Dealing with the office was very easy, she was polite and knowledgeable. I see from the reviews that there are some with very low scores. I also see that every one of them were in contact with M&A because the Police had had their vehicle towed. There is no way to feel good about your car being taken away by the Police, so it seems to me that it is a common response to hate on the towing company for such a bad luck situation. I also see that the best reviews are from folks (like me) who were having car trouble and were well taken care of by M&A towing, especially in speed of response and care with our problem. My experience of towing companies is they are either run by professionals who are excellent at their jobs and help people + charge a fair rate for hard work, or the kind of people that will lie and make threats. These are the latter. My mother was in an accident, the police called the wrong company (these people) instead of the tow number on her insurance card. She was told they *accepted* American Express. When they reached their destination, and the driver asked her to call the office and pay, the woman denied having said they accept American Express and *immediately threatened* to "store" (i.e. at some exorbitant rate) the vehicle until paid. Yelled. My mother called me to deal with the payment. I spoke with a man there, who was in the same office. The woman (Wendy?) wanted to *charge the wait time because of her mistake*. I think the tone of my voice communicated how much fun he would have trying to get that extra fee from me, so he said "don't worry about it" like he was doing me a favor. I had to stay on the phone to make sure these dishonest people sent a receipt immediately. The receipt says Hustead's Towing, which was run by the most dishonest people I've ever encountered, yet the service ticket says M&A towing. This tow was less than 5 miles, and was $225 for a Subaru. I called Berkeley Towing -- *who are honest* and their quote was... $65 for the same tow. M&A are profiteering, lying, nasty people. I feel bad for the driver, my mother said he was a nice guy. The office staff (who I think but am not sure are owners?) no. Call a reputable towing company that has good ratings, not these people. read more

Car got towed on a Friday evening a little after 5pm (apparently after their office is closed). $576 just to get the car out and $80 accrues every day you can't get it out, so that's $160 on top of the ridiculous price to get it out because, according the the man we spoke to on the phone, they're not open on weekends. When we called the number to get information the man on the phone told us that the office is closed and we need to call back Monday, when we asked where the tow company was located he hung up. M & A towing is reckless, negligible, and when they damage your car they try to bribe you by tying up parts they damaged. My car was towed by M & A Towing during game day on Saturday and when I drove my car the next day, the impact bar had been damaged. While I was driving my car on the freeway the plastic was rubbing against my tires and road and I almost got into an accident. I lost two days of work because I could not use my car. The fact that their truck drivers did not point to damage that could have endangered my life and the life of others on the road just speaks volumes t their priorities. I will be reporting this to the better business bureau and the City of Berkeley. They had no photos proving the damage was not theirs. They accepted responsibility by attempting to settle it. They refused to have a mechanic look at it. They simply wanted to tie it up so that I could "drive it." This tow company's motto should be "a profit by any means necessary," so do not trust them with your cars or your safety!!!!!!!! read more

I contacted Wendy and she went above and beyond! She took photos of the vehicle's contents and even shipped some of them to me on her own time. I'm over 65, this is my 14th motorcycle. M&A sent a small young Latino tow driver Who could not speak English, to tow my BMW motorcycle. This guy did not know much & was not properly trained to tow locked motorcycles! The steering was locked so he forced the handle bars breaking & jamming the steering lock instead of turning down the job or coming back with the right tools or enough strong men to lift my 500+ pound bike into a position where it could be properly put on the tow truck. This was a 72 hour parking tow, not taking up a car space or blocking anything. Fortunately I got a ride from someone I meet at church who witnessed that the BMW steering was jammed to the left so the bike would only roll in a circle! M&A claimed that rust was the reason but rust takes years not 72 hours! M&A did around $3,000.00 in damage not counting their tow fee. M&A said they would not charge for extra day so their mechanic could look at it, they they tried to charge me the extra day! I called 2 independent BMW mechanics they told me I had to take it to a dealer. I'm also suing the city of Berkeley & asking them to revoke M&A's towing contract. M&A also charged me $180 for an unnecessary dolly fee, total for about 4 days around $850.00! I would rate M&A a minus # or lower! I've had other BMW's towed & never had the steering broken! My car got towed by M&A Towing on Saturday night from Jefferson Street. I had been parking in the empty parking space next to St Joseph the Worker Church on Jefferson Street for years while visiting my daughter who lives in University Terrace. The parking was completely empty, and there were no services at the church. Within the next 90 minutes, a self-righteous church volunteer called M&A and got my car towed. She said it was her job! She pointed to the sign that was hardly visible in the dark. A witness told me that she had been doing it almost every night waking the neighbors. The man at M&A took extra 30 minutes to bill me and charged $345 for storing the car, $90 of it for using a dolly! He said he was doing me a favor releasing the car after hours and charging me only one day's storage. He also said that the church had a contract with M&A. It was a rip-off, and I fell victim to a dishonest deal between M&A and the church. read more
