I've seen…read morethe Poco Loco chain around, I love mercados and carnicerias, so I stopped by the one on FM 21 to pick up some fajita meat and some empanadas. I was overwhelmed by the awesome selection of baked goods, and the meat market had an amazing selection of cuts. I got 2 pounds of marinated fajita meat, some sweets, and a mango beverage. I purchased my groceries and headed to the car, feeling great about a new store to visit. I opened the car and reached for the fajita meat only to find that it was not in my bag. I double checked my purchase and my receipt. I have health issues that require me to check myself constantly to make sure that I'm functioning properly in an orderly society. The fajitas were not in my bag. I went back inside and found the cashier, and the fun began. She immediately played stupid and pretended to not understand English. I thought, cool, a mistake was made, here's my receipt, get me someone who can speak English. She gets the assistant cashier, who hears the story first from the cashier. She was told in Spanish by the thief, who didn't know that I've lived in South Texas all of my life and can understand the language, "I don't know what his problem is, he said he doesn't have his items, I think he's drunk". The assistant looked at me in disgust and said that perhaps I should check my bags and my car for the missing item. I was enraged. I have medical issues and haven't touched a drop of alcohol in 2 years. They obviously were trying to provoke me into creating a scene so they could have me trespassed. I asked for the manager, and he joined the conversation. All in Spanish. Once again, she told them I was drunk, and needed to leave. I showed him my receipt, which he promptly tried to pocket. I demanded it back. I showed him my bag of groceries that had a definite lack of fajita meat. He tried to tell me that I was out of luck. I told him to please come out to my car and I would show him everything in it to prove that his cashier was a thief. They STILL told me that it was my fault, and I should leave. I told them I was calling the cops. That got me a look of fear from the cashier. She knew she was busted, but the look of utter contempt for me was enough to make my blood boil. I had enough of her thievery. I was reaching for my phone when the manager demurred and gave me the $25 for the fajitas. I will NEVER set foot in an establishment that tries to rob me and make me feel like I'm the culprit. Adios, mofos.

It's way more "manageable" than bigger H-E-Bs, & while they might not have the obscure organics or artisanal offerings of a Central Market or other H-E-B's, this store is a hidden gem. The shelves are always stocked, the aisles are always clear, & the associates are always happy & quick to help. I pretty much know where everything is, but the few times I've wandered aimlessly looking for something, fellow shoppers -- mostly older & wiser -- have helped me find whatever it is I'm hunting down. I've always preferred small grocery stores to large ones, & I really have a soft spot for this one. Maybe because I grew up in the area, or maybe I just like how leisurely a shopping trip here is; I enjoy my time spent here, & I think it's a nice change of pace from the Walmarts & Targets of the world. A pro-tip: the H-E-B app is a great help for a store as condensed as this one (& any H-E-B in general). It tells you aisle by aisle if they have something you want in stock, so you can save time, gas, & energy if you need something in a pinch.

Being an Austinite, I have grown up shopping at heb's all over the city. I cant help but notice…read morethat each heb caters specifically to its neighborhood demographic. For example, the heb at Wm cannon and escarpment is a delightful family oriented market of fresh and diverse produce. You can choose from a variety of tasty samples, sample wine, and even learn how to cook proper meals from an heb chef teaching from a microphone. That heb resides in a higher property value neighborhood than its older sister store up the road. Which brings us to the old wm cannon heb. Long past it's glory days, this old gem is now claimed by relentless armies of black crows waiting to bombs away on the many pedestrisns and vehicles desperate enough to park under the crows favorite trees. Instead of cooking lessons, youl find eyebrow stylist. Substitute a fruit smoothy stand for food and wine tastings. Prices are still on point but produce/meats/hot foods selection seem to cater to the latin demographic that's predominate in this heb's neighborhood. Yet the staff is friendly and familiar. I've never felt unsafe at this heb but it's not unusual to see extra fuzz from time to time. No great wine or beer selection at this heb but you can certainly get all the ingredients needed to make menudo. Parking is annoying and that whole intersection has become a choke point along with most of that heb parking lot. So if you want the good stuff you gotta drive up the road a bit. The slaughter heb is better but not by much. I'm still giving this heb 5 stars because heb has been good to me and my family throughout the decades and I know how good they can be. Heck, I can remember playing arcade tmnt and street fighter here. So how bout it Wm cannon district manager? Product was well culled throughout the department. The deli / bakery combo is small but the basics were there and fresh. I picked up fresh made deli croissant sandwiches located on a checkout merchandiser. The pre-sliced deli meats were in a refrigerated unit in the deli area. Meat variety and quality was good. No seafood department which was expected. Good small format store.

The park they built across the street is beautiful and equipped with a skate park, basketball court, playground and swings. I see why so many of the locals hang out here. I have found great items from food to cosmetics to pet goodies. I was grateful to find they have many options even though they are on the smaller side. When it is cold I often come for the warm and ready gumbo and tortilla soup. Their low carb ready to go meals have made my life so much easier during the busy week. They even have sourdough fresh made in the bakery. I usually end up here over most other stores for my main groceries due to the always pleasant experience. It does tend to get pretty crowded and parking can be tricky. So I often come during early hours during the week.

My husband had the Korean pulled pork with kimchi, which was fantastic, and I had the ravioli with pesto, pine nuts, and fresh local tomatoes. I'm not the biggest fan of pasta in general, but this was so very good. I can't wait for another, before tomato season is through. Thank you, Royal Tomato!
