This is an HEB you don't want to find yourself at... just to get to this location from William Cannon alone is horrendous and trying to find parking is a nightmare. Essentially, it's like a Fiesta in a low-income area, with some essential items locked up to prevent theft. The area feels unsafe, and the homeless encampment behind the store doesn't help. I had food poisoning after eating a piece of Boar's head oven roasted turkey from this HEB on Saturday, May 9th.

I was just in the store buying some food and I thought to myself it's almost lunch time, maybe I'll buy myself some sushi. I stopped at the sushi stand and watched as they were making it. This very short lady with sniffles is 5 inches away from the food talking into it with her co-worker. I thought that's disgusting and unsanitary. Here's a good solution wait time for curbside, how about either remove the curbside pick up from this store location because they can't get your orders in outside at a convenient time or hire more workers? The two most recent times I have ordered delivery from this store, the groceries have been hours late, I've been left on hold for up to 15 minutes while trying to ask them what happened, and text notifications that the delivery is in route have been entirely absent. You know... this HEB is beyond ghetto, its a bit scary sometimes. It is however open 24 hours. It being open all night I often spend my hard earned money here. Do I enjoy it? No not at all I hate shopping here. Its like the first level of hell. Do not expect the store to be fully staffed, there are never enough open registers. Don't expect to check out in under 20 minutes.. its just not done here. Don't expect the cashier to make proper change and not make mistakes with the registers. It happens all the time. Watch how much your paying for each item its important that you pay attention here. I cant say enough bad things about this store... shopping here makes me feel like I'm in some rural village in south america and this is the only place for over 100 miles to shop. Ghetto it totally is. Packed beyond belief at all hours.. for the most part yes. The most annoying issue I have is when they polish the floors. They block off the milk, eggs, bacon, and bread first. That's happened to me on several occasions. The business center peeps are always very helpful. The most recent time I had to visit the store 5 times in one day, forgot my card, then it was declined, then I forgot my wallet, but the lady at the desk was a lifesaver after seeing me a third time she told me when I returned to stand by her lane. I always shop here for small jaunts to the grocery store because it's convenient and open 19 hours. I've done used every service here. Business center, pharmacy, deli, bakery, seafood, cell phone lady, even rented rug doctors. I don't love this store but I don't hate it either. I think some R & D should be put into keeping the birds away. Nets on trees work well. Owls in them. Or sonic cannons on the roof. I avoid the trees/shade at all costs, even during triple digits, to avoid the poops. Ok ... this HEB is not as bad as some of the other reviews make it out to be. Is it a little ghetto? maybe ... but the thing is, it is the only one that is open 24 hours in south Austin. So due to my schedule I frequent this location often. I love that they carry cheap pieces of pork and beef that I can not find at the Brodie HEB or Slaughter HEB. These are some of the best pieces sometimes! This HEB has a lot of options as far as cultural food as well. I will admit on more than one occasion I have seen the police in the parking lot here, but that is mostly due to the fact that it is right on I-35. I only give it 2 stars because I have lived in this neighborhood since 2008 and it actually used to be a lot worse. If it wasn't for that I would give it 1 star. Parking is horrible. HEB YOU FORGOT ABOUT THE 78747!!!! I do truly appreciate the improvements made over the years, but I hope for more. Please do not assume because we are working class people that we do not like good ingredients or quality products. You will always be able to sell a million pizza pockets, but some of us have a more developed pallet. I don't know if it is classicism or if the invisible hand of the crappy grocery store market economy (Econ 101 sorry) is working it's magic. Either way, this place has the worst food options in Austin. Unless you are a teenager or college kid who eats frozen food, cheap beer, and crappy wine you will hate this place. Oh HELL no.....it is such a shame that this HEB is like this..... WTF? When I moved here and lived off of Wm. Cannon, we had a joke that had this HEB stood for something to the effect of Habla Espanol Bitches, because I swear, something BAD was going down there at night and some of us feared we would get cut or something because of who was just standing out in the parking lot, getting their grilled corn on. And their drunk on....and then just staring at you in the dark.... I have seen a car accident happen in this parking lot and both people drove away...nothing exchanged..... I have seen a person get mugged here at this location, during the daylight...I wish I were kidding.... I was really desperate this past week and went there only to learn why I never go to this one in particular....THE KIDS/Teens that run rabid in this store!! Like I said, I was so very desperate.... The only thing even remotely cool about this HEB is that they put all of their yellow coupons on a blackboard up at the front so you can just stand there and skim them really quickly... The bad thing about that is, they are FOREVER out of stock on EVERYTHING....No buns, no eggs, no dice....I am not kidding! Only go here if you need something VERY BASIC like paper towels, maybe milk, and canned vegetables....because if you look for something even slightly out of that box you will not find it.... They're out of stock on meds. Do not inform about the out of stock, until I personally called. They always tell me to call them back instead of calling me to provide an update. Addition to that, staff hung up on me when I requested if he can call the other location to see if they have the med that I was looking for. He said "ok I will call" and hung up. Didn't bother to tell me if they do, are they going to transfer to this location or do I go pick it up or if he will call back to confirm or do I call back ... Once when I was 13 and walking home from the P&C grocery store on Valley Plaza, a boy started to follow me. He was about 3ft shorter than me, but that is no matter when you have irrational rage to compensate. I ignored him and he proceeded to throw rocks at me and call me a whore- as any child of decent breeding would. Clearly, none of these other reviewers have been to the P&C in my old 'hood in Upstate NY because this unjustly slandered HEB is a far cry from that store (ironically now a Tops). No, this HEB is not fancy (ha!) and yes, the other reviews are old, but I decided it is time to boost their stars. Here are a couple reasons why: ~ I found my coconut milk here. For $1.19!! My search is over folks, and it was a serious one. This is authentic, made-in-Thailand coconut milk-no extracts, no water and no garbage ingredients. EVERYWHERE else in Austin, the coconut milk situation is...shocking (shame on you, Central Market! Shame!). Crappy, expensive- even at MT, the Asian mecca up north, where you would expect this brand at the best deal, it is quite a bit more costly. Thank you, "lower demographic" HEB ~ They carry a really good extra virgin olive oil for $6 and change that is almost $20(!!!) at the HEB on Brodie- for the SAME SIZE. What gives?! I mean, I do love the HEB on Brodie and I DO pardon their construction, but reeeeally?! Ok, so there are some interesting characters here and their produce section is not the vast, waxy glory that is Central Market, but since I am not into taking it in the ass, I buy most of my veggies at Sunflower or Sprouts anyway. The rest I do buy at HEB... I mean, 29 cents for fresh cilantro?! Pardon me while smell my fingers. This HEB is great for all the normal and oddball stuff you need. For whatever reason they have an awesome imported section; not as impressive as the Fiesta on Stassney (or S I-35 I guess), but they have quality items at much better prices than other stores in Austin, including other HEBs. People will tell you to use Central Market as a pickup joint. Would I decide to troll for a companion at this HEB (or, um anywhere)? NO- but I have never once feared for my safety here and I assure you that I am a wary female. I go to grocery stores to mingle with food, not to find someone who looks fertile and respectable. Considering Austin's reputation, there are some awfully uptight people here. If you are really scared of this HEB then you are mush-soft (not in a snuggly way) and you probably don't belong in Texas. read more

Avoid it like the plague. Even with Austin's "reputation" (as another reviewer put it), this place is miserably dingy and gross. Nothing about this place says "Austin charm". Rather than comparing it to a slum grocery store in another state, I'm basing my review on what I expect from a grocery store. The Breakdown: - As for security, they have one patrolman on a three-wheeled cart... contraption, and the parking lot is horribly lit. Not sure those 15 security cameras are gonna be helpful if it's too dark to see anything. - A power wash or even a sweeper truck would do this parking lot wonders. I know what you're thinking; "She's complaining about the cleanliness of the PARKING LOT?!", but srsly, the filth of this lot lends itself to the filth and poor care of the store itself. Sticky puddles of god-knows-what, gum, bird crap, trash... - Produce is pathetic. Fruit flies everywhere. Dirty and sometimes rotten product. Ew... just ew. -The freezers are ripe with freezer burn despite all the supposed repairs that were done. Frozen boxes are damp or soggy. Ice is caked on ice cream cartons. - The shelves are messy and understocked. Misplaced product remains untouched despite the presence of stockers and other employees. - Floors were abhorrent. Dirt and wear apparent throughout the entire store. - Yes, we all come here for the groceries, but the clientele sets an undesired lack of comfort. Momma said not to judge a book by it's cover, but sometimes it's hard. There are creepers that leer and hover by their trucks and low-rider hoopties blasting what I assume is music while trolling through the lot. Jammies and slippers are apparently regular dress code. People shopping with all 5 of their small children in the wee hours of the morning boggles the mind. Kids running around unsupervised, ugh. - Throughout all this, I did find the checking staff to be very upbeat and friendly. I've been here many times (as it's close and sometimes I'm desperate), and this seems to ring true each time. (Keeping in mind most of my visits are in the late evening or wee hours.) The Bottom Line: I actually have a RULE about this store. I ONLY come here if I'm BEYOND desperate. I live 3 minutes from here and will drive to the HEB on Brodie or, if that's closed, the HEB in the Hancock Center rather than subject myself to this dump heap. Wow. What can I say that hasn't already been said? I hate to be the one to dogpile on top of what is already a boatload of negative reviews, but I feel the need, as always, to speak the truth. I believe that there are a lot of great HEB's in Austin and there are a lot of terrible ones. This HEB however, clearly takes the cake. It is just plain awful. First of all, the bathrooms were DISGUSTING. How were they that bad? It was eight in the morning! The urinal was covered badly with a tarp and some tape, trash was everywhere, it needed a mopping a good few months ago, but the best part for me was the one stall. Broken lock. There was literally no way to keep the door closed. Have fun taking a poop in there living in constant fear. The aisles are narrow, and the parking lot is always full. Seriously, it is like magic. Go by at any time, morning day or night and the parking lot will always be full. And I have been seeing a lot of people saying that this HEB is ghetto. OH YEAH. It is VERY ghetto. Ohhhhh no, no, no, no! This HEB location is extremely sketchy. The parking lot is not well lit and patrolled by a biking security guard. The shelves are a mess. They are disorganized, not well stocked and items are mislabeled. The produce section was gross. It was dirty and fruit flies were everywhere. The floors were sticky and appeared to be dirty and worn down. The shoppers were... interesting. Some clad in pajamas, some toting 9 children, one even pushed me with her cart instead of just saying "excuse me". The place was packed and dirty and all I wanted was to get out. So the other day I was in the aisle at this store and one of the employees was walking through the aisle! The employee was walking very briskly and knocked my shoulder pretty hard when he walked by and never even acknowledged that he hit me. I spoke to a manager named Scott who identified himself as the GM which apparently is not correct. He was not sincere and kind of laughed and scoffed at me when I asked for an apology from the employee. After I told the employee that he hit me all he said was well are you hurt? this is one of the worst HEBs I have ever been to. The parking lot is a nightmare, over crowded and the security is always hanging out with the bums who panhandle at the corner. He seems to spend alot of time at his vehicle...not sure what that's about. One of the yellow shirts seems to always be where I am in the store which is odd...kind of wonder if he may be a stalker..and I don't mean shelves. The service counter? Be prepared to have a movie ready to watch on your phone cuz you will be there for awhile. Coffee selection is minimal, but if you want a great selection on animal parts I have never heard of this is the place for you! yuck! I have had to return dairy products a few times because of them being spoiled. This is by far my least favorite out of all the HEB stores that I have been to. I am a huge fan of HEB but this store is just a joke. 1. They don't have healthy food options like the other stores do. You have to go scouring the aisles to find any organic or nonGMO foods. Instead, they pack the impulse areas with junks foods like chips and tortillas. They don't even have a healthy food isle! 2. The customer service is shabby. I asked the cashier to put the steaks I was buying in a bag (like they do at all other HEB locations) prior to placing them in my reusable bag and he told me they don't do that....What?! Do these people have no sense of sanitation?! 3. The parking lot situation is terrible. It takes forever to find a parking spot and then when you get back to your car it is covered in bird poop. My advice to anyone is to just take the extra 20 minutes it takes to go somewhere else where sanitation is important, healthy food options are more easily available and you don't have to deal with nasty bird poop and an over crowded parking situation. read more

I am forced to go to this one as my regular HEB and let me tell you, I hate it. Hate me a strong word but I really dislike having to go to this HEB. I often go out of my way so that I do not have to end up here. Crowds: For some reason, there are just drowns of crowds sometimes. I dont get it, but so many people that the checkout lanes are blocking all flow traffic in the store which can be really annoying. Especially because you will be asking people to move and they only speak spanish so, the just look in your eyes and dont do anything. The People: The people are actually pretty nice. Even though you can see that a lot of people are just getting off of work with oli on their clothes or cement stuck to their boots they are really nice. I know that when I come here after work I am "hangry" and dont want to talk to anyone. The Food: They just flat out are missing a lot of things. Stuff you can find in other HEB's you are just not going to find it there. Often times in other HEB's I will get a little grape, cracker and salami little pre made in the deli section, but its lacking and often does not have much like that at all. But boy do they have the 100 stack of tortillas. Also the fresh tortillas which are delicious. Parking: Probably one of the worst for parking in any HEB. Its hard to access some times because so many people coming down william cannon. When you get inside, it looks like a big parking lot, but its actually really hard to find parking. Plus, everyone is walking all over the parking lot, which seems like for no reason and everyone is always pulling out in front of you or speeding for some reason. Terrible. read more

Reasonable prices, but it's always packed! Lots of unattended children darting between carts which gets on my nerves like no other. Go late at night to avoid some of this. The parking lot is always full of nasty Grakle droppings which really sets me off of wanting to buy food. Also if you are in the mood for food you'll have to really dig to find organic products. I just went to this location for the first time since moving to this area. My husband went previously before me and he said I would not be impressed. However, I decided to give it a shot and see for myself if I would like it. This location looks like it has never been cared for or updated since the beginning of H-E-B. The fruit and vegetables did not look fresh, there was very limited selections for bakery breads, the meat selection was sparse, and the overall experience was just upsetting. I will not be returning to shop here again and I will gladly drive further from my home to get groceries from now on. read more

They don't have anything to eat if your hungry and just want a bite, they have the old skull on isles, produce was sub par, it's just an old and outdated version of what a grocery store can be. In fact, to my surprise, Walmart & Target down the street are 10 times better than this place. I would suggest they FIRE everyone at the top of the corporate ladder & management, start researching "Experience" & "Value" and look around a little, there are tons of amazing businesses in grocery doing amazing things. This place is nasty and we avoid going here as much as possible. Although I have seen worse HEB's, this isn't one of their nice ones. It's an ugly location; the area is infested with black birds, but it has gone down since the winter. Most the time, you'll see a fight or loud argument going on in the parking lot. The inside isn't very welcoming either. And you'll see people threading eyebrows when you walk in. Wouldn't trust my eyebrows being shaped at an HEB. The only reason I give an extra star is because it's close and convenient when we need something last minute. But even then, you can't trust that they'll have everything you need. read more

This location is open 24/7, and is fairly large. They close their beauty isle after dark, which I found to be strange. There's a large variety for the alcohol section, which is well organized. Their freezers are newly updated with LED lights. The employees are always friendly and helpful. When you're done shopping, you can also stop at the two Redbox machines located immediately outside of the entrance. read more

This store is currently open while it is undergoing construction, which makes things that much more difficult to find. Whenever I go, the cashiers seem overwhelmed because the lines sometimes reach toward the middle of aisles and only 5 of 14 lanes are open. Not the greatest HEB ever. Even out of all the ghetto HEB's, I still prefer the HEB at Rundberg and North Lamar. Of course out of all the HEB's in Austin.... Its gotta be Hancock Center that is the best..... or even Parmer@ I-35...... or Anderson Mill @ 620. Well just sayin, there are a lot of better HEB's out there.
