The Spot On!

The new restaurant inside, Artista Rosso, is absolutely fantastic!!! Chef Belle has really created something special in here. They just opened but the food would make you think they have been around forever. Definitely a new top tier spot in Austin!!!!

Come one come all! Project Pollo has set up business inside Rivercity and they have a great special running now. Impossible has joined forces to launch a new menu item, a mushroom burger, and are offering a buy one - get one free menu item deal. Project pollo is 100% plant-based! We got 2 burgers for $9 bucks! Best deal in town. We also bought some vegan-friendly chips and new limited edition coke flavor...starlight. There are several tables along the windows for eating as well as lots of picnic table outside. Great selection of wines and beers, but they also have beer and kombucha on draft. Cheapest jellyfish on draft in Austin- $6.99!! We will definitely be returning! My only gripe is the area has a lot of traffic and contruction, so it takes away from the surroundings. Sure it will all look way different in a few years.

I love this place and their rare selection of snacks. Sam who works at night is one of the sweetest and coolest people I've ever met!

This market is surprisingly wonderful! There is an incredible selection and lots of sustainable and eco-friendly choices. There's also a lot of healthy and health-conscious options. The owner could not be nicer in the staff is so friendly. I definitely can't wait to go back again! I got fresh pastries and cold brew coffee.

This is the sister of the Like Oak Market. It's the more high maintenance, and polished sister.. Try the turkey, bacon, and basil panini. Craft beer selection is great but I miss the tub in front where you can buy singles. I know, they're catering to the condo dwellers in SoCo. They've added a fresh pastry section too with beautiful cakes, pies, and macaroons. Lots of local products, snacks, etc. I still prefer the L.O.M. but they've done a good job at creating something similar for a different market. I think it's going to work. Now simmer down, hipsters, there's plenty of beer for everyone.

My basil and bread sandwich...

The entire experience lasts about 90 minutes, and they did start a few minutes late. They did a good job describing the cheeses, the other paired snacks, and the wine pairings. They also did a good job choosing a good variety of cheeses and giving good pairings. The table crackers are refilled throughout the tasting, but nothing else on the cheese plate is refilled. The setup was not quite what I expected. There are six tables that seat ~six people, so you're going to be sitting with strangers. You start by going around the room and introducing yourself and your favorite cheese, basically as an ice breaker to meet everyone there. It was a little noisy and not intimate for a 2-person outing. It felt much more like a social gathering, and I think it would be better as a friend meeting, group gathering, or even a team-building activity. It's also a good way to meet strangers if that's what you're looking for. You get a discount on in-store purchases, which is a nice bonus. You can also take your leftovers home, so don't feel compelled to eat the entire plate like I did! The only other issue was that cashing out took a long time at the end because their POS system wasn't working well.

I come here for their selection of onigiri, natto, miso, kombu, bonito flakes, tofu, nori, togarashi, furikake, Japanese curry, sake, Japanese beer, sweet rice cakes, ramen, and just looking for something fun I've never tried before. Just be sure to follow the directions when opening an onigiri so it will stay in one piece. But oh those are so good. I even like the one that's basically just rice, seaweed and mustard greens. How they make something that simple taste so good, I'll never know. The layout is well-organized. Aisles, refrigerator and freezer sections are each relatively small, but packed with options. Each aisle I walk or door I open is an adventure that I spend a few minutes on, and I still discover new delights every time I visit. The staff here is nice, too. One lady walked me through their natto options very patiently. One was giving free samples. And the sweet lady checking me out at the register must have said Dōmo arigatō a dozen times during our brief transaction. One ingredient I bought reminded her that she needs to pick up the same for herself as she's making char siu tonight. And now I'm online looking for char siu recipes because it turns out I have all the ingredients; I just need the pork. I drive an hour each way to come here, but its totally worth it! My trip out is filled with anticipation an my trip back includes onigiri. Then I get home, put away my "haul," open an Asahi Super Dry and then I cook up a delicious Japanese meal :-)

This week's flavor was Red Bean and Matcha, and HOLY WORD-I-SHALL-NOT-SAY... this absolutely blew me out of the water. The red bean and matcha balanced each other so perfectly, and somehow tasted even better swirled together. Both cashiers were super cool too (was that Japanese I heard them speaking?). The guy with the awesome silver hair mentioned he was also from Houston, and we somehow ended up talking about how Austin's Asian scene just can't compare to how insanely diverse Houston's is. Still, it's always nice connecting over a mutual love for a great Asian environment--which Asahi definitely is. Wow--I've been here for 15 minutes, and I already have so much love for this place. My phone is literally dying as I hastily type this, but I felt obligated to spread the gospel immediately.

Turkish eggs: 3.5/5 The eggs were perfectly cooked and the chili oil had nice garlic flavor. The bread was lovely quality. The sauce wasn't my favorite and I don't think it paired well together but it wasn't bad. Mortadella sandwich: 4.5/5 This was the star of the show. The bread is great and the pesto brightens the sandwich up. The arugula is a nice touch and the cheese is delicate. There's a ton of meat which I appreciated. This location is nestled in a shopping center that is easily missed. It's a good thing I had mapped it and was focused or I would have slid right on by! Like many places in the Austin Metro, parking is not great - but at least it's a dedicated lot and not street parking. Swedish Hill is on the end closest to the road across from the True Value Hardware. Upon entering the coffee shop, the line is all the way on the left and the counter is on the rear wall. There is is seating in three separate areas. One is straight ahead when entering. The second is to the right side of the order counter. The third is outdoors to the far right. We ordered coffee, Jasmine green tea, couscous salad, Persian cucumber salad, and a cookie. The food was tasty and beverages were hot. I was a bit surprised to see the salad selection unrefrigerated and uncovered on the counter. While pretty to look at, it also seems less appealing to order. For example, the glass noodles were spun into a nest shape on a slice of wood, but looked rather dried out. I found this a little off putting. This is a pleasant place to sit and chat. The vibe is calm and unassuming. There seems to be mostly laptops and chatting in the main area, moms and small kids on the side area. It's a busy place, and It was hard to find a spot. Overall, it was a relaxing lunch. I'd meet there again, but won't go out of my way for it. It's not spectacular but not bad either.

I actually had the event bookmarked on Yelp! Yay! Everything about the Boil was fantastic! Of course, the locale. For those of you that have never been to RH, put it on your list of things to do. Even if you don't have a full meal, go for a drink or two and take in all the beautiful scenery! Great landscaping, architecture, and stunning views of the lake - particularly from the Pavilion balcony that is only opened on special occasions such as the Boil (weddings, grad parties, etc.). The staff are all well-trained and know how to treat the customers. Super helpful and courteous! The festive sounds of live zydeco filled the air. The weather was perfect. About 85, nice and sunny, with just the right breeze. (Which is a good thing, because RH does not allow crawfish consumption inside the main restaurant.) The people...not too packed; diverse crowd . Everyone was very friendly. There were a fair amount of kiddos about; however, they were all so well behaved I didn't even notice them. (Not a hater - just like to relax with my beer and snack without hearing screaming in my ear). MOST IMPORTANT: The Mud Bugs. Normally $25 p/p for all-you-can-it - which is a GREAT deal - but made even better if you happen to know the manager (Thanks for the hospitality Johnny!). Great bugs! Huge! Suck da heads good! Each batch was served with corn on the cob, small red potatoes, and slices of andouille. Awesome! A+++! A wonderful, fun-filled afternoon! Have already put the event on my calendar for next year! Do the same! Maybe I'll see you there... :-D

So when my friend told me about this all-you-can-eat crawfish event at the lake, my first two reservations were 1) lake people? and 2) how much crawfish can I really eat? But alas, after chain watching How I Met Your Mother on Netflix for 4 hours last (Friday) night and mourning my sedentary lifestyle and general anti-socialness...I impulse-bought the $15 advance ticket online. What else was I gonna do on Saturday? Besides continue to vicariously engage in Ted's tireless search for his future wife on Netflix? The set-up was beautiful. A prototypical "lake scene" you would see on say, TV, rather than the let-down gross lake scenes that tend to disappoint me. Gorgeous mansions atop hills/cliffs(?) all around which didn't really directly contribute to the experience because it's not like we were in them but hey made very good visual props. And of course there was the surrounding lake...and we were lucky that the weather was sunny and breezy. There were a good amount of people--enough to where the event seemed happenin' but not to where I was elbowing people in a race to the all-you-can-eat grub. In fact, that was probably one of the key delighters...lack of long ass lines. Loved it. Heaps of food and virtually no wait! The 1.5 - 2 lb. crawfish servings were put into these black paper cartons where people would just pick up and go. They also had mac and cheese, hot dogs, and eventually beef sliders included in your pass fee which was a pleasantly unexpected surprise. I never say no to mac and cheese. The crawfish was tasty--spicy and well-seasoned although a bit too salty for my taste. Included in the sides were boiled potatoes, corn, mushrooms, and sliced sausage which are more side items than are usually included with crawfish. So they definitely didn't scrimp just because it was all-you-can eat. (Another thing I must add is I'm not a fan of buffets. Once again, people have bad judgment when put in front of unlimited food supply plus quality is usually compromised for quantity.) One harp I had with the service was the bartender inside the restaurant...very unattentive, unhelpful, and clueless. I'm not sure if this counts toward the specific event because I later realized that the Grille at Rough Hollow Restaurant was only co-hosting the boil with a few other groups but hey--I'm going to recount everything that contributed to my holistic experience, good or bad. My friend and I literally stood against the counter for 10 minutes while this bartender ignored us (no it was not crowded) before we finally asked to see a happy hour drink menu. He was unfriendly and after handing us the menu adds that he's not sure if there is happy hour today. Umm, if the bartender doesn't know the happy hour schedule...who the hell is supposed to know? He doesn't even offer up a way for us to find out and the proceeds to ignore us again. I encountered a similar experience with another one of the restaurant's employees, not sure if this is a consistent issue with the Grille. That said, the staff that were clearly working the specific event were very friendly and helpful. A woman with a green shirt would frequently materialize out of nowhere and offer up wet naps at point of need and there were always bus boys clearing out the crawfish cartons after you were done. Overall, I would definitely recommend this event and will probably attend the following year--my begrudging view of lake-type hooplas is slowly shifting!
