Writing a very lengthy review in hopes that others can make informed decisions about working with Phinney Ridge after our disappointing experience. In October of 2024, we chose to work with a small, local business because we expected a higher standard of quality, craftsmanship, and personalized service. Our initial experience in the showroom met that expectation and gave us confidence in the process ahead. Unfortunately, the remainder of the project did not reflect the level of service or product quality we anticipated. 10 months later, and we are severely disappointed with how things unfolded. This was a substantial investment--nearly $70,000--and we expected a finished product that aligned with the value and promises made. The first issues arose when the cabinet boxes arrived damaged. To PRC's credit, they addressed this with a restoration expert, and we're satisfied with how those specific concerns were resolved. However, the ongoing issues with woodgrain matching have been far more frustrating and ultimately unresolved. After three separate attempts, it became clear that a proper match was not going to be achieved. We were made aware by PRC that we would be receiving cabinets "from the same tree" to ensure an exact match across all cabinets. One day one, we had multiple varieties of wood grain/color. If consistent material wasn't available, we should have been given the option to wait. Instead, we now have five visibly different shades of wood throughout our kitchen as shown in the photos. We were also disappointed in the communication and service from Phinney Ridge once the "Pacific Coastal Marketing" team (a dealer representative/middleman) became involved. We did not expect to work through a third party--we selected PRC specifically because we wanted to avoid that kind of detachment. I found myself repeatedly chasing updates, which, according to PRC's own "Cabinetry Design Services" document, should have been handled by their team. It was unclear who was responsible for what, and the handoffs between Phinney Ridge and Pacific Coastal Marketing only compounded our frustration. To illustrate this disconnect, I'll share a quote from Pacific Coastal Marketing's homepage that I found telling: "Coastal Pacific Marketing offers valuable knowledge of the markets they serve... Their goal is always the mutual success of the manufacturer, the dealership, and each individual designer." Notably, the customer is not mentioned. This perfectly reflects the experience we had: at a certain point, it felt like the end user was no longer the priority. I share all of this not to be combative, but because I believe in honest feedback and hope this helps improve future experiences. Based on our experience, I unfortunately cannot recommend Phinney Ridge Cabinets to others.

Other companies either wanted us to sign a contract right away or didn't provide design services at all. We chose Bora because they came to our house, made measurements right away, listened to our ideas and created a design without making us sign a contract. It really helped us visualize what we wanted. One thing I also appreciated was the fact that they came professionally dressed in their Bora Construction uniforms. This is not a big detail, but it shows they have pride in what they do. Other general contractors showed up in jeans and a t-shirt. Throughout the project, the project manager at Bora was very communicative and gave us a heads up on how the project was going. When they found a water pipe and HVAC inside the wall we wanted to knockdown, they developed a way to reroute the plumbing and HVAC on the same day and without the ridiculous cost overrun. They basically charged me for just the materials. It's this courtesy that they showed throughout the project. They did such a great job, we asked them to do the same cabinetry and flooring on the powder room. It wasn't in the original estimate and timeline, but they added it to the scope of the project and still kept their delivery date. Wow! The quality is top notch. The engineered vinyl tile looks beautiful and the stacked stone on the fireplace looks absolutely gorgeous. They made expert suggestions like adding more recessed lighting to the dining area and living room, which makes our home so much warmer and brighter. I have pictures of before and after. I'll be posting those if I can. We are pleased with our choice to go with Bora Construction. Oh, one more thing. The price was cheaper than the competitors by more than 10%. I know this for a fact because we gave the same specifications and ideas to two other companies. The other companies suggested similar materials and methods, but charged more. At that meeting, we were told we needed to install flooring under the cabinets. After speaking with a contracting friend and two other companies, everyone said that was incorrect. This led me to doubt their professional knowledge and expertise. After the initial meeting, everything started going by the wayside. They missed appointments, were hard to get a hold of, and changed their story. We went from picking out materials to needing another appointment for the contractor to see the home. During the second appointment for measuring and seeing the home, they "measured" by measuring at an extreme angle. The contractor, in charge of demolishing our kitchen, demonstrated no knowledge in how to properly measure (it was NOT an area needing an angle to measure). That was concerning. They also didn't know the business hours of their own vendors. When we decided not to continue with FC Construction, they were honorable in giving us a refund. But when we called to remind them, the owner told us the refund was in the process. The next day, the main company line called and asked for our refund information to issue a refund. So it being "processing" was a lie. I didn't trust them to start any work, so I have no idea how their work is. But I wouldn't recommend based on the many red flags mentioned above. In order to maximize our profits, we needed to renovate the kitchen, bathrooms, basement, etc. This is not my first rodeo; I previously hired many construction companies. I know what questions to ask and what to expect, but the process can be challenging as you try to find the right people for the job. We started the remodel three months ago. As I sit here, I now have two beautiful new bathrooms, a brand new kitchen, gorgeous bedrooms, a basement that can be rented as a rental unit, a fabulous new patio, and numerous other projects inside and out that have completely transformed my home. Josh was very responsive and a pleasure to deal with throughout the process. He ensured that the electrical, plumbing, and everything hidden inside our 64-year-old walls was as up-to-date as our new countertops and cabinets. The workers were highly skilled and extremely respectful of us and our space, as we had to work from home while they worked on our house. They finished the job down to the last detail. I also had a new roof and 15 windows replaced. The roof was a steep 12-pitch with some plywood needing replacement. New turbines were installed, and vents were painted. Clean-up of the area was complete. The windows were custom-made, constructed mainly by a local manufacturer. Some windows were so large that they required manufacturing from an out-of-state provider. All were installed by qualified technicians who thoroughly cleaned up the area. What stood out for me was the communication and the flexibility. Half through the project, I also wanted to do the basement. I wanted to add a bathroom, laundry room, utility room, and spacious living space. The basement can be utilized as a rental property, so by adding more stuff, I could get more value by having larger families living here. All of the walls were unfinished concrete, and the joints were exposed. It started to look much better after applying the first coat of texture and primer. Josh and his workers turned the basement from an empty concrete space to a warm, livable space adding value to the property. One of the things that was important to me was cohesiveness between the upstairs and the downstairs. Josh and his team worked hard to ensure everything matched the upstairs. In the end, even the door knobs matched the ones upstairs. From the initial consultation to the final touches, their team was professional, skilled, and dedicated to bringing my vision to life. This project involved multiple structural changes, as we moved load-bearing walls and pushed out an exterior wall to add square footage to the space, plus HVAC, plumbing, electrical, insulation, siding, windows, tiling, hardwoord flooring, cabinets and custom carpentry, painting, etc. We especially appreciated how John and Marcos would talk through options with us. They always gave us clear choices with an understanding of how they would impact pricing and timelines. We also really appreciated their flexibility when we decided to push out the exterior wall, which was a change to the original scope. John worked hard to get the engineer and city back quickly to approve the permit revision, and also was strategic about what work continued while we waited for that to ensure we weren't taking on unnecessary risk. The attention to detail is another thing the J&C team does exceptionally well - we had custom cabinets with a really complicated façade to cover a soffit, and the team didn't think the original plan looked good enough, so they basically built an extra piece from scratch to make the entire thing look seamless. For our window installation, Marcos came up with a brilliant idea for how to frame the window using the same stone slab as our backsplash and it's truly one of my favorite features. Also, I realize it seems like a given, but based on many other renovations we've seen, the fact that everything is perfectly level and centered is huge (even the cabinet drawer faces all line up exactly!). Finally, the team did a fantastic job keeping the area as clean as possible. This was critical as we chose to live in our house during the renovation. They would regularly inspect the plastic walls and make sure things were sealed well, plus they cleaned up after themselves every day and when the project was completed. Really fantastic experience, and we'll be hiring J&C for any future projects!
