We came on a weekend evening, and it was extremely crowded, though we were able to get a table pretty quickly. It was pretty loud overall, though with lots of seating available. I have celiac disease (strict gluten-free), and I am vegetarian. The free corn chips (supposedly cooked in a separate fryer), salsa and beans served at the beginning are decent, but the beans ARE NOT vegetarian, which our server did not explain. Our server also was unfortunately was not that knowledgeable about gluten-free related things, so the experience of eating there with trying to get the correct information from the kitchen was a bit challenging and stressful. Their cross contamination protocols were unclear, but he noted they would be able to cook the corn tortillas separately. I ordered the spinach and artichoke enchiladas. The filling was flavorful, though the cream sauce on top of the enchiladas had a rather unique flavor that was decent, though it felt the cheese quality was pretty low. The rice that comes with the vegetarian dishes is also NOT vegetarian, so I was given a side of green beans and corn. The side corn was good! It was however annoying they didn't tell me it was going to be an additional charge even though I hadn't asked for the items. The portions were plentiful and we came home with some leftovers. Overall, I didn't have high expectations for this chain restaurant, but it was nice that they have a separate vegetarian menu with several different veggie options beyond the usual fajitas, as well as several gluten-free options. I don't think I would come here much, but might consider giving it another shot on a less crowded day. read more

Lupe tortilla is a solid Tex-Mex restaurant with multiple locations throughout the state. We got fajitas and queso and were not disappointed. The portion of the queso was large for the price and was a very good cheddar queso. There are better fajitas in Houston but these were still quite good. We had kind servers and enjoyed the atmosphere here. While Lupe Tortilla may not rank #1 on my Tex Mex list, I would certainly come back here. Some of the food aspects were 5 star and others a 4- We are Houston natives so on visits, we nearly always go to our Fave, Lupe Tortilla on Southwest Fwy feeder near Academy near Greenbriar. This was our first to try Heights location and a brunch dish. The stars here are always the house margaritas: fresh lime, great portion in a chilled glass. Secondly the very thin and hot fresh chips or flour tortillas which always seemed freshly hand made. Be sure to note to get flour not corn tortillas with every dish! Also we love to mix their delish salsa with the small bowl of pinto beans together which results in a tasty hearty dip for the thin melt in your mouth chips! I tried the Egg Benedict Florentine dish. Very gourmet but I had a talk with the manager. The artichoke and spinach in the dish was barely discernible. The artichoke is just sauce and spinach was chopped into tiny pieces as a garnish on top. I think the dish needs chunks of both in the dish. The poached eggs sat on a lovely light tempura type fried green tomato or onion, but it was delish! The manager graciously sent me home with extra sauce and spinach, much appreciate! Hubby enjoyed his meal but egg chorizo taco was a little bland. It needed onions and garden peppers or something. I could not believe my eyes, ...a restaurant open for business on the Sunday after storms had devastated Houston. I'd driven to or researched online sixed or so restaurants that were all closed (Sunday hours or no power). The wait for food was understandable long, as the restaurant was slammed with customers. But the workers were courteous and the food was good. We ordered Fajita Grandioso to go. Did I mention that the food was good? The flour tortillas provided the perfect wrap for shrimp poppers, beef and chicken fillers. I like mine with grilled onions and salsa, but there was guacamole, pico de gallo and grated cheddar for the more sophistocated palate. Great food, but slipping in service and value. We used to love this place and have been coming here for years. The food is still consistently delicious -- flavorful, fresh, and classic Tex-Mex comfort. However, the service has become noticeably slower on our recent visits. Even when the restaurant isn't too busy, it can take a while to get drinks, or flag someone down. Also, the prices have crept up to the point where it doesn't feel like a good value anymore. We're happy to pay for great food, but with long waits and minimal attention, it's harder to justify. We're really hoping they can get back to what made this place special in the first place -- it's still got potential, but the experience needs a refresh. read more

Went there on the evening of Oct 8. Food was fine. It's Mexican food and hard to mess up. Service while we ate was good. When we left we discovered our car had been broken into. Smash and grab. The police were called but never showed up. The most frustrating thing is Lupe Tortilla has security camera footage of the break in but won't give me a copy of the footage. They have been less than helpful in trying to catch the a$$holes. Was told that break-ins happen often there. Why not have a security guy on a golf cart or something roaming the parking lots at night? And why have security cameras if you won't help your customers? I won't be back. read more

This location has the worse service ever! Don't bother coming unless they improve. My family use to frequent this location when the service was great. I'm not sure what happened. Our waiter Miguel Angel was rude and not very welcoming. Not sure if he was having a bad day. We did inform the manager on duty but that didn't seem to help much. The fajitas were good as most locations are however, the ribs had bbq sauce slathered on and the quality wasn't quite the same. I guess we'll have to continue to go back to the Kirby and Bay Area locations. It's 1:55am and my husband is still complaining about the horrible service. Honestly use to love this place but i think i've grown it out as in found too many other better places in houston for mexican food. Had a pina colada which was very sweet and didn't taste like alcohol in it. The salsa was so spicy i couldn't eat it . Wow, this soup was sooo delicious. I love that the chicken in the soup is chargrilled so it has some added additional flavor. The Black Barrel Margarita and the charro beans here have me in a chokehold! I gave four stars because parking can be a challenge and there is typically a line to sit and eat. The food is delicious I like the Al Carbon tacos or the flautas. If you frequent here often make sure to sign up for their rewards. Lupe Tortilla, a Tex-Mex chain, was started in 1983 by the husband-and-wife duo, Stan and Audrey Holt, in the city of Addicks (outskirts of Houston). Since then, it has expanded to over 20 locations and is now run by their sons, Peter and Judson Holt. When Lupe Tortilla was started, they were known for their lime pepper marinated fajitas, complimentary salsa fresca served with a basket of chips, and margaritas made with fresh-squeezed juices. We usually go to the location in the Heights neighborhood. They have a free private parking lot which you can usually find available spots. When seated, you will be served their complimentary chips and salsas. +Complimentary Chips and Salsa (salsa fresca and pinto bean salsa) - The chips are fine, but I am not a fan of the salsas served. The salsa fresca is mild and very peppery. I wish it was more flavorful and spicy. The pinto bean salsa is avoidable and forgettable. For comparison reasons, the salsas here are mediocre compared to other Tex-Mex chains in Houston. - 2.5/5 I ordered a hand-shaken margarita on the rocks and some fajitas: +Lupe's "Perfect" Margarita (Demetrio Lowland Top Shelf Anejo Tequila and lime) for $15.95 - 4/5 +World Famous Sizzling Fajitas (Lime pepper marinated chicken/beef/shrimp, hand-pressed flour/corn tortillas, guacamole, pico de gallo, cheddar cheese, grilled onions, rice, & frijoles) for $24.95 - The meats are okay. The beef is cooked black and completely charred. The flour tortillas are massive here for like a burrito. I have to rip half of the tortilla away to make it smaller. This is for 1/2 pound of meat which they recommend for 1-person (this is a fair assessment for the serving size). Although the lime pepper flavor is good, I would skip out on the fajitas here and stick to the tacos. - 2.5/5 Overall, Lupe Tortilla is okay. Comparatively, you can find much better salsas and complimentary chips across Houston. Their fajitas are flavored nicely with lime pepper, but the meat really isn't good. Our beef was charred black. The tortillas itself for the fajitas are massive and really should be smaller. I did enjoy my margarita, so getting drinks here is your best bet. On other occasions, we usually get tacos, and they are fine. However, they add like a large clump of shredded cheese on each taco which is overkill (I always have to remove it). I've alway's been a fan of Lupe Tortilla. Place where I can go, enjoy great fajitas and great service. However tonight was anything but.. When we first sat down. It took the bartender 10 minutes to greet us. And when she did. She just gave us menus and walked away, didn't even offer a water.. when we were ready to order we had to get the bartenders attention because he was only focused on what was on the tv rather than his bar guest. The bartender whose attention we initially had to get finally came back and took out order. We ordered a queso flameado as an appetizer and beef fajitas as our entree. Well the beef fajitas came out first and it took another 15 minutes for our queso Flameado to come out. We respectfully asked for the manager to discuss the situation and when he came, he offered us to have the fajitas redone. Before we had a chance to dig into our appetizer the fajitas came out again. And because it was the same fajitas that had originally came out, just out on a new hot skillet, they were burnt. I think the lime marinade for the fajitas can be an acquired taste (it was good but unexpected), but if you like citrus marinades for meat, you'll love the beef fajitas. The thin tortillas were fresh made and super unique too! I like the chips, salsa, charro beans, and Queso here more than Pappasito's, but I still prefer the beef at Pappasito's a bit more. Lupe is a bit more balanced with the salt though, which I highly prefer! The service here is excellent--better than Pappasito's which itself is already excellent. The Spicy Shrimp Stew for $16.95 had more grease than shrimp due to the large amount of sausage they put in there and it's supposed to have rice but it was heavy on the liquid. Came for the fajitas. $30 for 1/2 pound is on pricer side imo, but think prices at most places have been jumping. Fajita platter was pretty good, and more food than two people can eat. I am a big fan of their extra thin tortillas-- a little different than most places. I also really like their extra thin chips and dipping sauces.
