Selling my condo so had to update both kitchen, bath and separate vanity cabinets and countertops…read more I went to all the usual companies for quotes (Sanyuan, GS, A1, Pius etc) and made a crazy spreadsheet comparing them. 1st Ave came in second cheapest (GS was the cheapest). I decided to go with 1st Ave because they were very responsive on the phone and email, and they were able to do the work faster than GS. I also really liked that the people at 1st Ave weren't pushy like at they were at some of the other companies. They came though with all they promised to do - called me when they were on the way to the job site, installed everything so all cabinets and drawers lined up and worked flawlessly, cut the quartz offsite and came back to install countertops, and cleaned up after themselves. I have been recommending them to friends and neighbours, and I would most definitely use them again.

Compared to other similar cabinets in the area the quality and value of A1 cabinets were better. They also have special options and unique colors. So, that was a complication, but I could see into their lovely showroom through the windows and I could see they had the faucets I wanted. So, I called just to check and boy was I glad I did- their price for the faucets was almost $200 less (each) than at Aurora Plumbing! I had some email back and forth sorting out the finish details and Mike was super helpful and pleasant, despite some stress on my part. They look like they've got a lovely selection of interesting designers. I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to browse the showroom.

That said, there were several problems afterwards: * items that were told had not yet been delivered were cancelled, and we confirmed this with staff. We were then told afterwards that we would need to pay a restocking fee in addition to shipping back to the distributor. I asked to know the amount to help decide whether I should try to sell privately, though our phone call was ignored and we were charged said fees. * we were told that we would be charged as items arrived over several weeks. Instead we got a single surprise $10K+ charge on the credit card, and most things still have not yet arrived. The staff still has not yet answered emails or returned calls with our questions about this transaction. * the amount that was charged to our credit card was several hundred dollars more than the receipt. We still do not understand why this happened and whether or not it will be corrected. I can't say that I wouldn't go back, but I would go in understanding I would need to manage them very closely. They were not customer focused, though did have better overall prices for items that we ordered.

We had measurements of the components it would need to house and a budget; that's all he needed to get started on a design. The in-house consultation was great because he could get a sense of our aesthetic and the feeling of the room that would house the cabinet. Plus, he suggested a detail on the doors that we hadn't considered (but loved). He worked hard to make sure we were happy with every phase of the project (design, lumber selection, build) and sent us updates during production. When he delivered the cabinet, it was truly stunning and we were so glad it'll have a place in our home for decades. Sure, hand-made furniture costs more than something you'd get at Crate & Barrel, but there are a million tiny details in this cabinet that prove it's a worthwhile investment (and also not as expensive as we thought--Steve came in under our limit and always kept an eye on costs).
