My boyfriend and I were in the mood for barbecue, and we decided to try Lumpy's after checking out a few other places in the area on Yelp. I am so glad we decided on this place - it was the best! We wanted to try a little bit of everything, so we got two sampler platters and a couple of sides.
The restaurant itself was very clean. Bathrooms were tidy, nothing looked gross. It's counter service, with some tables along the walls. Everyone was friendly and helpful, and service was fast.
He got the half wrack ribs with mild sauce and pulled pork, and a side of mac and cheese. I got the half wrack ribs with dry rub and burnt ends with hot sauce, mac and cheese, and an extra side of buttered green beans.
The ribs, both the dry and the wet, were fantastic. Very tender, but not falling apart in your mouth (which is the way they should be!). The mild sauce was good, not overly sweet. The dry rub had a good kick, but I wouldn't classify it as overly spicy, either. The pork was equally delicious. Perfectly tender, and enough flavor that you absolutely didn't need to add any extra sauce at the table. Only thing I wish they'd had was a cider or vinegar based sauce for it, but this is definitely more of a Texas style barbecue place so there wasn't any to be found.
The burnt ends were my favorite part. I was so excited to see they had them on the menu - so few barbecue places do! But they really are fantastic. If you've never had them, I highly suggest giving them a try. They're basically the really well done end parts of a brisket, simmered in barbecue sauce. Lumpy's were SO good. Not as wet as some I've had, but tons of flavor. We had left overs of everything except those. They were too good!
The mac and cheese and buttered green beans were both really good as well. Obviously, the star of any barbecue place should be the meat, but the sides should hold up, too, and Lumpy's do.
For dessert we split the bread pudding with rum raisin sauce. The girl at the counter tipped us off to this. She said it's the only dessert they make on premises. It was FANTASTIC. We were so full we could barely move, but it was so good we had to keep eating it. Definitely meant for sharing, the piece they gave us was huge. Barely fit in the container they served it in.
If I were local to the area, I would probably make this my go-to barbecue place. Everything was fantastic. One thing to note - as we were finishing up, a woman who had placed a to-go order came back in because she thought her chicken was undercooked. Lumpy himself came out to inspect the chicken, which was not in fact undercooked at all. He tried to explain to her, very patiently, that barbecue chicken is often a pink color on the inside because of the chemical process that takes place while it's being cooked, and that the meat pulling away from the bone freely indicates that's done, but she wasn't having it and ended up ordering something else. I thought he handled the situation very well. He stood by the quality of his cooking, but still took care of his customer and got her something else. I would have eaten the chicken, though! read more
