I don't like to give bad reviews to local businesses, but I have tried Lulu's several times now and there is no reason those seeking a coffee, sandwich or sweet treat in a highly-touristed block of Salem can't find a better option. Everything I have ever had there is ok at best, and the prices are exorbitant. My experience is hit-or-miss with the service -- there is one woman who works there who is hostile and insulting, very weird. Other times, the counter staff is just inept (friendly is nice, but friendly and inept is not). They do things like pack savory items with bakery goods and more than once I have opened the bag to find a complete mess from an exploded donut or from icing all over the packaging of a sandwich. Speaking of sandwiches, the bread has been burned on my order more than once and the filling is so skimpy you can barely tell its there. I know we're all shocked at rising food costs but charging $11 for a small sandwich with barefy any filling is not fair. Other local shops are not fleecing customers this way. Lulu's is located on a very busy street in Salem and they seem to get a lot of business. The staff were nice and helpful. The food was ok. It was good spot for us to grab a quick bite before catching the train back to Boston. The dining room had ample seating and we were able to sit right away. I checked out Lulu's Bakery And Pantry on a Saturday morning with a friend. In late May it wasn't too busy and we were able to get a two-person table inside. We ordered a pain au chocolat, cinnamon roll, pepperoni and cheese roll, and a sausage and fried egg breakfast biscuit. They offered to heat up my pepperoni and cinnamon rolls but they ended up being only lukewarm. The cinnamon roll could have used more icing and the pepperoni and cheese roll had very little pepperoni and was extremely dry. I ultimately ate the interior that had what little pepperoni was there and had to throw out the rest. I wish it would have been better, considering the prices. On another visit to Lulu's, I got a small latte that cost over $8. Clearly the prices are meant to take advantage of the September/October tourist season. read more

Open, airy coffee shop / bakery near the Salem Witch Museum. We stopped in for a sweet treat and enjoyed the Pecan Bourbon Tart. The middle bites were DELISH, the outside bites were dry and hard. This tells me it has been in the case for a while. We decided it was worth the $5. read more

We were in Salem on the weekend and it was hot so needed beverages. Lulu's has housemade lemonade and icetea so we tried one of each. Lemonade was delicious and super dense so I actually added some water to extend it and it kept me hydrated all afternoon. We decided to have a snack as well. I got the cheese pizza square which was a little weak and getting dried out since it was around 2pm so that wasn't amazing but my husband had the cinnamon roll and liked the dough. When in Salem,MA this bakery is a visit. They have a little of everything. Soups. Sandwiches, coffee, bakery items! Bagels! It can get so busy but service was great and the 2 ladies were very good! They do have gluten free items . While they do say there can be cross contamination I wish they would separate the GF goodies from the regular goodies and wouldn't place them right next to each other on the shelf/ window. Incredibly disappointing experience all around. First and foremost, they seem very prone to hiring incapable staff based on my experience and others' reviews. I went in on a rainy day around 11, no other customers in the store at the time, nothing crazy going on- I stood alone at that order counter for 5 minutes as I watched the one employee out front painstakingly pouring sauces into little plastic containers. I said excuse me twice, loud enough for him to hear, and he turned around to look at me and still did not come to take my order until after he finished his task. Ridiculous disregard for customer service- I work in a coffee shop, I promise the sauces can wait for 30 seconds while you take my order. That should've been my sign to leave then but I stayed. I don't use this word lightly, but this staff member was completely, and I mean completely incompetent when taking my order. I started my order asking "I am gluten free (celiac) and can't have any cross contamination- is that something you guys can accommodate?" He looked at me with the blankest expression and said "... I don't know." Didn't bother to go ask somebody or try to find out, the person in the kitchen happened to overhear and shouted through the window "Yes" (also unprofessional). So, I told him I wanted a bacon egg and cheese on their gluten free bread with cheddar cheese (because you pick which kind you want). Incredibly simple order. He had to have me repeat it THREE TIMES till he got it right!!!!! He kept asking "okay what bread do you want? gluten free. what meat? bacon. what cheese?" OVER. AND OVER. genuinely ridiculous you can't take the simplest order in the world. I also had to remind him twice that I could not have any cross contamination and asked that he mark the order as an allergy for the kitchen (they advertised gluten free options so I was dead set on getting my proper gluten free preparation). Low and behold there is no allergy marking of any kind on my receipt or screen, and the cook has to come out and ask him "Is this an allergy or a preference?" to which he did not know how to respond somehow, despite me telling him twice already, so i jumped in and answered. After that nightmare I didn't even bother trying to order a drink or anything else, I doubt this kid would have been properly able to exercise any espresso drinks given he couldn't even work a POS. And that's not even counting the actual quality of the food. The sandwich I got cost $13- which even for gluten free is ridiculously expensive for a bacon egg and cheese with one egg and 2 pieces of bacon. I usually pay somewhere between $8-10 for the same kind of sandwich at other local establishments, and theirs usually come with 2 eggs and more bacon. The gluten free "focaccia" that they gave me was borderline inedible. I have had amazing gluten free breads, focaccias especially, at other local places like Crave in Beverly. Lulu's was literally a piece of wet soggy cake. And I mean CAKE it had the texture of tres leches cake when it was supposed to be bread!! No flavor, wet texture, horrendous to eat and a very sad excuse for a gluten free option, genuinely the worst I have ever had. I have no idea who baked that and thought it was good enough to sell at all. My bacon was also soggy, both of these being immediately after receiving it, and the sandwich had very little flavor as a whole. Also, if you are also gluten free or have other allergies you need to avoid the baked goods from here too. All of their "gluten free" pastries were stored and displayed not only in the same display case as normal pastries with gluten, they were LITERALLY TOUCHING the pastries with gluten. That completely erases the point of having an allergen-friendly option if it is literally actively touching the allergen it's supposed to be avoiding. I did not even bother trying any of these desserts as I knew they would make me sick, but they did not look very appetizing nonetheless. Overall horrendous experience, possibly the worst I have ever had a t a local coffee shop/bakery. I barely tried anything off the menu and I still know it is never worth coming back to nor recommending, and I can see many other people had similar experiences. I am not normally so vitriolic in my reviews but this was truly unacceptable and I should have never given them my money. DO BETTER. read more

Tried the fruit tart, lemon meringue tart, and key lime tart with a lavender vanilla latte. I'd skip the fruit tart, the crust was weirdly stiff and had a strange flavor - like shortening that was a bit off. The other citrus tarts were solid and the crust had the crumbly buttery graham texture I expected. The latte was lovely - herbal and not too sweet. Space is open and airy with great light and had a small showcase for some local art. Service was fast and attentive. Nice place to grab a treat and catch up with a friend. read more

I was really looking forward to this almond croissant. I purposely asked if there was almond paste in the middle, I was told yes. There was a few slivers of almonds but no paste !! I would have ordered something else had I not been lied to. And went back for more . Went to Lulu's bakery and pantry on my first trip to Salem, and I'm so glad that I stopped by! I got myself a gluten free brownie, easily one of the best brownies I've ever had, it was a perfect balance of sweet and salty, it had a wonderful mouthfeel, the brownie itself was super fudgy, the frosting was thick and chocolatey but not overwhelming, with just the right amount of flaky sea salt on top, I enjoyed it so much that I bought another to bring home to my family in California! My best friend and I wanted to have a cute date on an early and cold Sunday morning. She had already been here before and was excited to show me this cute place. After difficult debate, I decided on their iced gingerbread cookie and a hot earl grey tea which was a must for the weather. My friend ordered their bacon and cheese scone in which the staff member heated but ended up with a cheese and spinach croissant instead, presumably by accident. But we had no problem with it because it turned out to be delicious with little bites of mushroom in the flaky crust. The cookie was also yummy with a solid structure but still slightly chewy center. Overall, we had a very pleasant and peaceful experience. The music was muted, bathrooms clean, and food was satisfying. Lulu's Bakery is a bakery off busy Derby St in Salem. It's clean, not very big especially if it's really busy. There's scones, bagels, sandwiches, cakes, coffee. I got a large iced mocha latte and 2 mocha chip shortbread cookies. Everything was pretty good. I was disappointed in the cost of the latte in relation to the flavour. It was $7 for a large which is ridiculous but I really needed a latte at that point. I also wanted to give Lulu's a chance. The mocha was made with care but felt like it was missing something in depth of flavour and for $7 it needed to be spot on. I would go back for the desserts but probably not a latte... The mocha chip shortbread cookies were nice but very dry, more than I expected from a shortbread cookie. I still enjoyed it. Try a dessert item at Lulu's, you may try something comforting or new. read more

I got a small latte with a shot of caramel, it was almost $7 and although it was good, for a small it seemed very expensive, also it was basically just milk with a splash of coffee which was a little disappointing for the price. The store itself is decorated very beautifully which was nice. Lastly, the person taking my order was very nice and considerate so that was good but overall I'd say it's quite overpriced and just be warned if your getting a latte your basically paying for a coffee flavored milk. read more

Absolutely fantastic food, do NOT let anyone tell you otherwise! I came to Salem from the west coast for Fall festivities this year and just happened upon this place after touring the HOTSG. The chicken salad on a homemade roll was so fresh and sumptuous I had to go back the next day. I had a breakfast sandwich on that crazy fresh homemade roll again that was big and sloppy but so so good. The desserts were all huge in proportion,, particularly the brownie that was fudgy and thick as a brick but tasted like it was made with top of the line dark chocolate. This is a very affordable and great option for breakfast for a nice dark roast coffee and a breakfast sandwich or pastry. I ordered a lovely and very large egg and cheese sandwich on a biscuit was only $4.50. The coffee was strong (they offered dark roast), which is a must for me.
