This is a classic style diner in Salem that I had wanted to try for months that came highly recommended by a coworker. On the weekends, especially in September and October, it can be very difficult to get a seat. I went with a friend who was visiting Salem on a weekday morning in late May. Even then it was busy but we got the last open booth. The menu was massive, not including a hand-written list on the wall of all the daily specials. In an effort to try something I would never make on my own, I ordered the peanut butter and fluff french toast. It was chocked full of more peanut butter than a Skippy jar and the hot fluff spilled out, but I wish it had more of a french toast feel to it besides a very light egg batter on the bread. My friend enjoyed his breakfast with all the classics: eggs, toast, sausage, and bacon. In true diner form, our friendly waitress kept my coffee cup filled. I would definitely return to try out the rest of the Black Cat's menu. read more

We went here for a late brunch. We were greeted with a very welcoming hello. The pancakes were very fluffy and tasty. The eggs Benedict was good as well. I had the hamburger club it was ok. The diner itself maintains its' early 20th century ambiance, and has a warm, welcoming feel when you walk in. Food is superb (huge portions!) and the service is first rate!!! The two owners really put their hearts into this place. No easy task, when you see how hard they work. I visited the black cat diner in a Tuesday morning. The place had a cozy vibe with the chef in full view preparing food. Or server was prompt and helpful. My partner ordered a Benedict that was supposed to come with biscuits but was accidentally served with English muffins. However, she noticed it before we even had the dish and prepared one of the most delicious, butter, crispy, and tender biscuits on the side, and I was thrilled. In coming to Black cat diner there were so many things to be impressed by we felt compelled to send this review in. This is a wonderful way to support local family run businesses like black Kat diner. The food is outstanding, it was so good the first day we had to come back to get the rest of our favorites off the menu to try for day two. This is a really cool box car that's setup for luncheonette style and regular booth seating. In regards to what foods we would recommend off this menu? You must try the blueberry pancakes, I flipped over the Reese's peanut butter, pancakes, and French toast choices. I really enjoyed the steak and cheese, egg white omelette and the best recommendation was for the bacon egg and cheese on the everything bagel. The bagels are super fresh and absolutely the perfect ratio bacon and egg to bagel that you will find with any breakfast sandwich! Highly recommend this place! Our waitress was wonderful- she made the whole experience to this locally run diner so enjoyable and fun! Very friendly and amazingly polite and friendly. Watching the owner/chef Jennifer is astonishing how she interacts in a fast paced fashion while making you feel welcomed and relaxed. Food was excellent at a decent price. Service was good too. So why only three stars? Well they lose 1/2 a point for really tough parking. Your choices are either a very tight parking area behind the building that's used by multiple businesses or try to find a spot on the street. They lose another 1 1/2 stars due to the bathroom. I get that a lot of the businesses in New England are in really old buildings that obviously have building and health code waivers, but holy crap it's an adventure using their one-hole bathroom. You have to go outside into the elements to a shack behind the main building, go down some questionable stairs and the into a bathroom smaller than my entry way coat closet. Not comfortable and with those stairs, not very safe. It's a shame, because otherwise it's a cool place that I'd normally visit often. read more
