What a great find! Recommended by a friend who knew I had a soft spot for old diner cars, I went purely on recommendation, and was NOT disappointed. The diner itself maintains its' early 20th century ambiance, and has a warm, welcoming feel when you walk in. Food is superb (huge portions!) and the service is first rate!!! The two owners really put their hearts into this place. No easy task, when you see how hard they work. They seem to know everyone who walks in by name, and they instantly engage with anyone they don't know. I left wishing only the best for them. I visited the black cat diner in a Tuesday morning. The place had a cozy vibe with the chef in full view preparing food. Or server was prompt and helpful. My partner ordered a Benedict that was supposed to come with biscuits but was accidentally served with English muffins. However, she noticed it before we even had the dish and prepared one of the most delicious, butter, crispy, and tender biscuits on the side, and I was thrilled. I had the pumpkin pancakes which were savory and slightly sweet, and I can't complain about them at all. They were perfectly cooked and satisfying. I'll definitely be back! read more

In coming to Black cat diner there were so many things to be impressed by we felt compelled to send this review in. This is a wonderful way to support local family run businesses like black Kat diner. The food is outstanding, it was so good the first day we had to come back to get the rest of our favorites off the menu to try for day two. This is a really cool box car that's setup for luncheonette style and regular booth seating. In regards to what foods we would recommend off this menu? You must try the blueberry pancakes, I flipped over the Reese's peanut butter, pancakes, and French toast choices. I really enjoyed the steak and cheese, egg white omelette and the best recommendation was for the bacon egg and cheese on the everything bagel. The bagels are super fresh and absolutely the perfect ratio bacon and egg to bagel that you will find with any breakfast sandwich! Highly recommend this place! Our waitress was wonderful- she made the whole experience to this locally run diner so enjoyable and fun! Food was excellent at a decent price. Service was good too. So why only three stars? Well they lose 1/2 a point for really tough parking. Your choices are either a very tight parking area behind the building that's used by multiple businesses or try to find a spot on the street. They lose another 1 1/2 stars due to the bathroom. I get that a lot of the businesses in New England are in really old buildings that obviously have building and health code waivers, but holy crap it's an adventure using their one-hole bathroom. You have to go outside into the elements to a shack behind the main building, go down some questionable stairs and the into a bathroom smaller than my entry way coat closet. Not comfortable and with those stairs, not very safe. It's a shame, because otherwise it's a cool place that I'd normally visit often. read more

A small quaint historical diner nothing fancy but neighborhood friendly. A short walk from the Salem Public Library. The waitstaff consists of two ppl. Very friendly and amazingly polite and friendly. Watching the owner/chef Jennifer is astonishing how she interacts in a fast paced fashion while making you feel welcomed and relaxed. While she is behind the Heat with no break for 10+ hours. She remains strong and determined to provide awesome food and customer interaction is the key to a well run establishment. Well I've been going to this diner for a long time and through many incarnations and I'm happy to report that I've never had a bad meal here... typically I'm going there for breakfast and yesterday was my first visit since it became the Black Cat Diner ... love that they haven't messed with the original bones of the place , it's a great diner!!! Breakfast was very good, I had poached eggs over corned beef hash , not homemade, but good Definitely a locals place but I saw that there were at least one couple who were from out of town I wish this young woman all the success she deserves... We were touring Salem for a short amount of time in the middle of the week in October. Local folks probably deal with a lot there during that time and I get that but we were just trying to get a quick breakfast in before our adventure into Salem. We communicated with staff that we were going to wait outside for them to clear a table or bar seat after seeing they were pretty busy. Seemed like a plan and then they sat 2 local cops right where we had all agreed we could sit. We caused no fuss and left to eat at the next diner available. Maria's place is what we settled on.
