I've been looking for a New York style pizza since Margaritas on Main St moved up to S. Main St. and I found BETTER pizza closer to home! The crust was thin and had a nice density, with no burn and no cornmeal! I highly recommend the eggplant fries (not greasy or over-fried) and the Greek Salad which was a generous portion with carefully prepared veggies, olives and feta cheese. I've had terrible salads from pizza places, and this was hands down the best prepared I've come across. I look forward to trying some of the pasta dishes. read more

I've never had a bad meal from Luigi's. Penne a la vodka is my favorite with a side of meatballs. Pizza, sandwiches and other pasta, chicken and seafood entrees are also very good. My first and last order was the worst pasta of my life! I don't understand how they are still in business. I tried their lasagna, veal parm and stuffed shells and all were very tough with undercooked and/or dried out pasta that had been sittinf around for days. This is a little place tucked away in a tiny strip center at the top of the hill on route 41 in Hockessin, DE. Short version: Over the 2 years I've been going there... reliable, clean and affordable. First of all... I am very picky when it comes to my food. I'll try anything, and I'll try most places... my loyalty is based on a few factors: Cleanliness is paramount, then the taste / quality / reliability of the food, then presentation... prices I could care less about. Expensive good food beats the hell out of cheap bad food no matter what. By reliability I am referring to the consistency of the food... IE: you go one time and something is great and the same exact thing be different (better or worse) the next visit, which is very important to me. I don't want to go to get a meatball grinder with american (makes it sweet as opposed to provolone which has a sharper flavor... yes I have an issue with meatball sandwiches) and have it be awesome one day and totally suck the next and get all depressed over it. Luigi's Cafe has about 4 booths, 2 large tables and 2 smaller tables.... if you have a large group or 6-8 the seating is available for you, if you have more, I'm sure they could arrange the tables to accommodate you. The TV is usually on during the day with whatever channel happens to be on, he will change it happily if you ask. During dinner hours, the TV is still on but very quiet or muted with some nice easy music playing... makes you relax so that you can stuff your stomach to the point of maximum expansion and not feel like you have to go to confession the next day. When you walk in there is a short wall on your left that has the specials etc written on it... pay attention to it... there is usually something very good on it. The menu is your typical Italian pizza shop type menu at first glance, but if you read it you'll see that something is a bit different. For Instance: The Old World Italian sandwich. I think Yelp frowns upon colorful language, but... DAMN. If you like more authentic foods, try this one. The pizzas he has on display are another clue that the man cares about his food.... try the Grandma Pizza - freaking awesome. His sausage scallopini (I get with me meatballs too) is another one that is just great. If he ever has linguine with shrimp and octopus (shut up and try it and thank me later) you will forever regret the day you didn't try it... it really is freaking delicious, although I prefer it fra-diavolo. Luigi is a great guy. He enjoys food, he enjoys seeing his customers enjoy his food. He tries new things on a regular basis.... although I'm still trying to get him to make cannoli with citrons instead of chocolate chips... if he does, and I ever get divorced, I will marry his shop. Yes it sounds like a total brown-nosing review, but in all honesty, there are very few places that are reliably good, clean and affordable. I honestly have to NOT go here some days on purpose because I almost feel like a stalker. And as comedic or ass-kissy as all of this sounds, it is honest. Reliably, good, clean... go here. Oh and one last thing... after 2 years I realized the huge mural is actually a mirror image of itself and was devastated. Staring at that thing all that time cross-eyed with post-feeding delirium and thinking it'd be cool for a gondola / boat ride down that river while I digested all the food I ate that all those people in the cafes didn't get to was fun... now I hafta come up a reason why we just passed the same exact dude but backwards a few minutes ago, lol. read more

I should have known by pulling up in front of this place on a Saturday afternoon, it was a great spot to grab dinner and take home. People were coming out with multiple pizzas and boxes of dinners! Everything was delicious. The Italian tuna with some provolone and red roasted peppers is exactly how my mom would make it! A chicken sandwich with melted provolone and some broccoli rabe was rated a 9.5 by a family member. The pizza was tossed in the air, not that premade whatever crust that so many places in Delaware use. This place is legit. This cafe is a hidden gem, well worth finding. Stopped by for a slice of pizza, which I thought was excellent, so I decided to go back for some pasta. Ordered the linguini with shrimp and clams in white sauce. It was excellent, with lots of clams. Finished off dinner with an excellent cannoli for dessert. I grew up in Philadelphia and often had Italian food in South Philly. I think Luigi's is as good as any place in Philly and it's a lot closer to my house. I'll definitely be back. read more

Got take out for the first time from here. Dying to find good pizza in Delaware.. . Was overall underwhelmed. Got 2 pizzas. One was " the works. "It was salty and greesy. Disproportionate amount of onions compared to rest of toppings. The other pizza was "the holiday" and that was probably deserving of 4 stars. Fresh veggies on it. And iy eas good but dur to one pizza being average at best and them measing uo thr pasta ...= 3 stars. The worst part really was that my dad created a pasta off the create a pasta section and they forgot the meatballs. Kinda a big deal if ur getting pasta and want meat in it. Incredibly rude staff and after two visits I'm done, I don't care how good the food is (it was fine but nothing to write home about). I watched and lost my appetite as they were nasty to the numerous dashers coming in to pick up orders, leaving one in tears. The second time I was there (last Friday) there was a line of dashers waiting for orders and they simply ignored their requests and wouldn't answer their questions. Drivers are their delivery partners and deserve better. I'll take my business elsewhere. read more

My husband had a yen for pasta, but we didn't want to go far from home. So we took a look at Yelp and discovered Luigi's. Don't be fooled: this tiny place is in a small, quiet strip mall I'd never even turned in to in more than 30 years in the area. It looks like a tiny deli or walk-up pizza joint. The food, on the other hand, is deliciously surprising! We both had pasta dishes that were more than ample (we have at least 2 more meals out of the leftovers). The entrees came with generous side salads we weren't expecting. The bread was soft and warm. And the cannoli was a perfect shareable size. We were delighted to meet Luigi himself, who was working hard and aims to please. We will be back. Often! read more

We have been going to Luigi's for a couple years. It has been our go-to pizza shop for the last year or so. In the last few months things have been very inconsistent. Pizzas have gone from overcooked to undercooked and back again a few times. We used to dine in regularly but we've stopped altogether now. Service is always friendly but it has become painfully slow. It shouldn't take an hour to complete a meal. We are going to take a break from Luigi's for a while and give them a try again over the summer. read more

This is by my favorite place around the area to get hoagies. In my opinion, a great roll can make or break a hoagie, and they use rolls that taste like they were super fresh! I have tried their pasta and it was definitely good, but not as good as their hoagies! Try the cheesesteak or chicken cheesesteak hoagie! You won't regret it! read more

Another great find, thanks to Yelp. We've been in this little strip mall but never tried Luigi's before. This is not your typical pizza joint, it's so much more. We had a La Nonna pizza with fresh basil and spinach and it was out of this world. Leftovers even heated up well. Our daughter had fettuccini alfredo that was excellent. My wife had penne a la vodka that was good, but is why it was a 4 rather than a 5 star. The flavor was very good, but was a bit on the salty side for our taste. When heating up our leftovers, I added a little more freshly cooked penne and a touch of cream that helped cut the salt for us. Oh, the only reason I was able to do this is they don't skimp on their sauce. Both our pasta dishes had plenty to go around. They have some pre-made pies available if you want to drop in for a quick slice and had what looked like some delicious stromboli and calzones. The wait staff was friendly and not sure if it was the manager or owner that helped us, but he was great. Definitely very accommodating to your needs and was willing to customize anything on or not on the menu for you. We'll definitely be back. read more

Luigi's is by far the best Italian place I have found in Hockessin! Everything I have tried there is authentic and delicious. From their NY style pizzas, grammas pie and wings to their antipasto salad, and the other day I tried their penne alla vodka with prosciutto and chicken. It was $20 but I was able to get 3 full plates from that one serving. The sauce was delicious and the pasta was cooked perfectly. That was better than a lot of white tablecloth Italian restaurants I've been to in the area. I am looking forward to venturing into other items on the menu and will update accordingly. read more

Pepperoni pizza was good, four stars. Thicker crust and very crunchy. The grandma pizza was just awesome 5 stars. You can tell they use fresh mozz in that because how it looks when it melts and a tomato sauce with stewed whole tomatoes. It also has a thick crust, maybe a little thicker. Great pastas. Make sure to try the pasta special with the clams, scallops, and crabmeat if they have it on the specials board as you walk in on the left...it's absolutely delicious. Also get the garlic knots as an appetizer. Luigi is a great guy and very passionate about his food. The only thing keeping it from being a five star review are the desserts. The key lime cheesecake we had one visit was of the standard, pre-boxed variety, while another time we had a chocolate mousse which was a bit better. My advice is to pig out on the pasta so you have no room left for dessert! read more

My boyfriend then proceeded to tell him what we ordered and he said "we don't have that" so not only did he say we lied about what name we gave but they also put in the wrong pizza order. We arrive in 25 minutes pay and then wait 50 more minutes when we ask about our order we get a cold pizza that was probably sitting on top of the oven for 40 minutes. Paid $2.50 extra to get gnocchi on my dish, but found at home that they had used spaghetti (receipt said it was supposed to be gnocchi. I had take out. Ordered chicken parmigiana on penne pasta with a side of meatballs, came with a salad and bread. Salad was fresh and crisp, the "house dressing" is worthy of being sold by the bottle!! The dinner portion was perfect and the food delicious. The chicken was well breaded and flavorful. The meatballs were also very good, great flavor and texture. Will certainly explore that meal again. I have eaten sandwiches and pizza here before (never diappointed), however this was the first time I eat from the dinner menu. Will continue to support and explore the menu. read more
