Was there on time actually, however their parking situation is pretty rough and took forever to find a parking spot. I suppose they don't take that into consideration. Won't be back. Been going there for 15 years. They are super busy so they won't miss the business and I won't miss the hassle of driving across town. We got in line by 1030 to wait for the 11 am opening. We were seated promptly. Bread and beverages came out quickly. We felt rushed to order. And I had to request more hot water for my tea three different times before somebody brought it. Food was brought quickly and our waitress hovered over us waiting for us to finish to take the plate from us, asking if we wanted dessert, and bringing us the check. We were with our neighbors celebrating my husband's birthday and although the food was good, we felt herded in and out like cattle. We didn't stay an exorbitant amount of time. We would have preferred to stay longer but their goal is evident to move the process along and don't offer things (like more hot water for tea) that aren't going to bring in more money. I mean what can I say that hasn't been said before about Luigi's. It's iconic, it's delicious, the staff is always A+. Was in the downtown area when we got hungry for lunch so we decided to treat our selves to lunch. We got there around 1:45pm put our name on the list and were seated in about 10 minutes. While we waited we checked out the little deli and shop. Also recommend checking that out, they have pasta, soups, sauces, wine and a variety of snacks. We were seated and it was of course, bustling with patrons in every section of the restaurant in and out. I ordered a small bowl of minestrone that was filled with of veggies including cabbage and topped with Parmesan cheese. My husband got the green salad with antipasti , not pictures because he wolfed it down but it was tangy with salami and the 3 beans very good way to start our meal. Next since it was Saturday I went with one of their specials the Monte Burger and my husband got the pasta bolognese with spicy sausage. The sausage is everything a sausage should be and the pasta and sauce were hearty and warmed the belly and he was only able to finish half. The star though was that Monte Burger with double cheese and roasted red pepper. It was so juicy and flavorful, I was warned it would be messy and it was but it was completely worth it. I gave my husband a bite of the burger and he said hands down one of the Best burgers he's ever tasted. On this occasion we came to Bakersfield to celebrate our granddaughter's birthday and we were so glad she chose to go to Luigi's. I've tried the sandwiches and there's just really nothing there that is good or stands out to me. The taste of the spaghetti sauce reminds me of Chef Boyardee. The main dish I got was the Truffle Sacchetti after scanning the menu for something meatless(they have plenty options, I was just being picky because I normally do not eat pasta). It was delicioussssssss, the pasta was cooked to perfection, the truffle inside was the perfect sub for meat(for me) and the brown butter/sage sauce was just the best option to mix it in. I completely loved the dish and I'm definitely interested in trying others. With that being said, I normally do not eat any red meats but my team was adamant about me trying the handmade meatballs that are only available on Tuesdays and it just so happened to be Tuesday so, I got one to try. It was delicious, juicy and flavorful. The meat sauce that it comes with was obviously tasty as well. I would definitely be getting those again if we make it on a Tuesday. The service was great, there were lots of nice faces to look at and they were quick when it came to getting us drinks and our orders in. We sat on the back patio which has a great ambiance, the weather was nice and it just so happened to be Halloween so there were people in costumes. How fun? Other than the great food and multiple seating arrangements, I loved being in this space knowing it is the oldest restaurant in Bakersfield. A muffaletta is a famous italian sandwich invented in New Orleans with cured meats (ham and salami), provolone cheese, olive dressing and great bread. Never ever a bad meal, never. Steak, seabass, halibut, ribs, tri-tip sandwich, pasta- white & red, appetizer platters, truffles, soft or hard roll, salads, tuna... everything bomb! I am rather picky and do not eat tuna anywhere but home & 1 sandwich shop but gave it a try and it was so good I've now ordered it twice in a month. Ribs just melt off the bone in your mouth. One of the best places in Bakersfield with not only awesome food and service but a ton of history of Bakersfield!!!! This visit was my sons 27th Birthday so we decided to take the kids there for a Birthday Bash!!!! First off if you are new and haven't been there will be a wait that could mount up to an hour plus. Hence wished I had known about the reservation rule lol. The seating is a bit tight and the noise level is high. If you look around no one really cares though because they are having a blast. We promptly greeted by a cheerful young lady that took our drink order and asked if we had any questions. No alcohol on this trip but they do have an awesome indoor and outdoor bar that mix some great drinks. We started the lunch off with pickled tongue for 2 since we can't get the kids to eat.... Their loss our gain. To me the pickled tongue is the absolute best in Bakersfield. For my lunch I ordered the tri-tip sandwich which it has been a long time since I've ordered and it was absolutely awesome. Perfectly cooked to a medium-rare piled high with meat topped with lettuce, onion and a special dipping sauce. FYI the dipping sauce is actually on the sandwich not in a bowl to dip...lol The server got a kick when I explained that a dipping sauce should be dipped.... lol We topped the lunch off with their go to Butterfinger Pie!!!!! I had heard good things about Luigis. You know the classic homestyle Italian restaurant where the first thing you notice when you reach the door is the sweet smell of garlic and tomatoes. Nope, not to be. Love the look of the place but it's loud and the food, well, how do you mess up a $$$ meatball sandwich and why would you serve it next to cold. I can't even describe what the meatballs tasted like-Bland with a dribble of sauce and cheese. Sorry, but I can't recommend. The pasta, really, sooo much olive oil that it was swimming in the stuff. I did not order and can't comment other than to say it did not look especially appealing. The service is always fast and friendly with wonderful suggestions! The ambiance is always bustling, you can hear the clanging of utensils on the bowls or plates and lots of conversations and laughter! You will never go away hungry! No I have been to Luigi's forever ago when I was about in my 20s and now I'm in my 50s I stayed away from it for a long time because whenever I would go with friends there was never anything for me to eat there other than the bread. I went with my fiancé because he's been wanting to go and I told him I would just eat whatever to get by so he could enjoy himself but I found that they had some mushroom raviolis. They were really good. They were really flavorful, but I am not a fan of all the oil that was in the plate, I did have to wipe them off with the napkin first so I probably won't order that dish again. I didn't take a picture of the wedge salad, but I am a huge fan of wedge salad, and this one was very tiny. I had to even ask if it was a large or small. we were going to share the wedge salad that I let him eat it instead because I wasn't a fan of the lettuce it was very bitter. It wasn't like the wedge salad that I've had everywhere else. Maybe that's the point to be different but when you eat very little items because of being vegetarian, I guess you're wanting things to be familiar. The restaurant looked the same as it did 30 years ago and I'm sure that's why people love this place. There's outdoor seating when the weather is nice I would be willing to go back. I just have to find something else to eat and ask a lot of questions before ordering. Our waitress was very nice, and there was no wait. Open il 4pm. Except Sunday and Monday. Many regulars here where the staff call them by name. My kind of place. Today I got some thin, extra long spaghetti, *Gino's* some pasta sauce, garlic paste, tomato paste and a beautiful bottle of $12 Fallen Angel Moscato. Many gift ideas here. On the higher end of price spectrum. Many people this date were buying frozen breads, cheeses and doing pick up orders for family dinners. As for parking, I got a spot right out front on the street and security was there too for the ongoing homeless issue. Modern world meets Old World is how I see this little market. Lots of wine! I'm not sure if it's because they are always slammed, or if the quality of food is different. The majority of people are there drinking wine or socializing. Don't get me wrong, I love socializing but to do so, you have to go out back and stand in a massive crowd. Again, I know they are slammed and are limited to space. I usually get the half and half which I love and it hasn't changed in 30 +years. I decided to try the New York Steak for the first time. I wasn't impressed. They was alot of fat and gristle. Omg! You cant say enough good stuff about this place! The food is excellent and consistent. I always order the Giovanna salad and usually the cheese ravioli. The outdoor patio is cute and perfect for a nice afternoon. The service is always great, especially considering how insanely busy it gets. The deli nextdoor has fresh cuts of meats and cheeses (every father's day I come get my dad some prosciutto), olives etc as well as cute little gifty items and frozen items to make at home. The only down side is the wait can be long if you dont make a reservation ahead (if possible) and the parking is very limited. The area is near the homeless shelter but its definitely a staple in our downtown area and the homeless dont bother you. read more
