Always my absolute favorite for years now. When I lived in austin I ate here all the time, and now when I visit I make sure to stop by the bar for some eats or get it go on my way back to Houston. Everything I've had is great, from the bone in fried chicken with the jalapeños and the cornbread, to the fried okra and pickles. I also really enjoy the tenders with the sauce, and the chicken salad. The vibe and the staff are always great as well. This place used to be great. We got caught in the rain and decided to give it a try after many years of not having it. The setup is nice here and we sat outside since it felt nice. Service was nice and good timing on everything. But whoever is over the food is dropping the ball. We ordered quite a few things. The chicken and chips were our favorite but the chicken was tough and definitely dried out. The fried pickles were very very very salty. Couldn't eat them. I order the grilled chicken and couldn't eat it either. It had a very bad burnt taste to it. You could smell it. I'm not sure how they didn't. The collard greens were over seasoned as well. I wanted to like this place. The ambience is really nice and it's a hip friendly place. I ordered two pieces of fried chicken, greens and fried okra. I gobble down the fried okra, which was really delicious, but I came to this place for fried chicken. I bought individual pieces because I wanted two sides. Thighs were $4.50 each, so $9 for two. While tasty, my complaint is they were burnt. For that price, I expect my fried chicken to be more on the golden than dark brown side. read more

Ramshackle older place- lots of folks have obviously loved this place for many years, and I do too. Just a perfect vibe. Service was friendly and efficient without being "too much". We loved everything we tried- which included chicken tenders, turnip greens, cheese grits and Mexican Coke sweet potatoes. All were at the top of their game. Honestly, some of the best grits and greens I have ever had. As for the tenders, if you like crust these are good because they are thin, so you're getting a larger crust to chicken ratio. And they are just delicious. I prefer a more meaty tender, but I would eat these anytime. Topped it all off with a crisp Lone Star Light. I will be back to try more things on this menu. read more

Lucy's isn't the polished restaurant to which I've become accustomed. It's a step up from a food truck in a parking lot or perhaps the next best thing to eating in the wilderness...in a city! It took almost a decade to actually try this place! I really like the vibe here. There's both indoor and outdoor seating available. I'm a fried chicken lover but I'm also very particular. I enjoy fried chicken that's well seasoned (could be Chicago style, Indian seasonings etc), spicy versions, Korean, and Nashville. Not the biggest fan of just regular bland fried chicken. Unfortunately, Lucy's only has the regular and no spicy or seasoned option, and the regular doesn't have spices or flavoring to it. So for me it was pretty bland. I also tried the Nashville Hot Chicken special that was on the board. It was decent but does not compare to T22 in terms of spiciness, preparation, presentation, and taste. With that said, I felt the quality of the chicken was pretty good and the leftovers held up well under the air fryer a few hours later. Also tried DEEP FRIED DEVILED EGGS and LUCY'S FRIED PICKLES (actually order CHICKS AND CHIPS but received this instead). Both were good for what they were. My boyfriend mentioned it was a little dry, maybe add a creamy sauce? Nonetheless, it was good. You can eat in or outdoors, we chose outside since it was a nice day and their patio had some fans. Casual dining at its best (you sit semi-outdoors at picnic tables and benches), you'd better come hungry because you are going to want to order everything. Fortunately there were eight of us so we got to sample everything from the fried chicken and catfish to the chicken-fried steak and the "Kinky" club. Our waiter was a no-nonsense kind of guy who still tolerated all the questions from our British visitors with barely concealed amusement. 8/5/25- We ordered chicken and waffles, but the chicken was incredibly dry and the waffle was so tough you could barely chew it. They didn't even include syrup with the order. And who serves chicken with bones on top of waffles? I've never seen that anywhere. The mac and cheese was funky. We sat inside because it was a little chilly in Austin today. Our server didn't have much personality. He was nice. We took an Uber here from the Embassy Suites on South Congress while we were in town for Bat Fest. It was a short and cheap ride, which was good because the parking lot was very small. I've heard through a couple of people that this place had good southern fried chicken, so We thought best time to try it is now. We went to order for takeout and wasn't clear where we could order but we asked the staff and they said you order takeout to the right at the cash register. Fix the nasty waffles! Food quality is lacking all around. I ordered chicken and waffles through Uber Eats and the waffles are absolutely disgusting. Why would you put chunks of sugar cubes inside the waffle? It added a really weird gross crunch inside the waffle filled with an extremely intense fake sweet flavor. Don't fix what isn't broken. Just make normal waffles. Aside from the weird sugar cubes, the waffles (and everything else for that matter) had a strange after taste. The chicken was edible, but the butter was nasty. That's not "honey butter" it's just totally melted butter Service wasn't great either as they also forgot my chipotle ranch that I paid extra for. I won't ever eat here again.
