My husband and I ordered the menudo which was delicious and my daughter ordered the tamales and fideo, she loved both. She is a somewhat picky 4 year old but she approved of her meal and ate very well. The customer service is great, the waiter came by and checked on us very frequently. A friend and I were cruising up Dyer St. in El Paso when we decided to embark at Lucy's Cafe North for lunch. Although the parking lot at this bistro is not large the restaurant itself is bigger inside than you would anticipate from looking at it from the outside. There are a lot of comfortable booths and many wood tables and chairs in an open and clean environment. Although it is called "Lucy's" all the staff as far as I could see were men. Everyone was welcoming and pleasant. The service overall was very good. Lucy's menu is diverse enough to please any palate and prices are quite reasonable. Today I ordered "Lucy's Famous Machaca Plate" and my friend ordered the Chimichanga Plate. While waiting for our food the waiter brought a smallish basket of chips and a bowl of salsa verde to the table. He soon returned with a bowl of a light tomato soup with fideo. That was not mentioned on the menu as I recall but it was free of charge. The chips were fine and the salsa verde was really up there on the heat scale. It was one of the spiciest salsas I've been served in a restaurant. Rate the soup a "B" with its nice mild flavor and the salsa a "B" also. Within twelve minutes or so our food arrived. I found the Spanish rice to be prepared really well, fluffy and with good flavor. The refried beans had a nice flavor and consistency. Rate the rice and beans both a "B+." My machaca was excellent. The shredded beef mixed with chopped tomatoes, onion, and an egg was covered with a delicious chile con queso that was made in heaven. Lucy's Cafe really knows how to season their food. The beef was juicy and not dried out like in many other places. The seasoning was exquisite. This machaca was so good! Rate it an "A." My friend's chimichanga plate arrived with two smallish chimis and rice, refried beans, and a bit of salad. She ordered her chimis with beef and they had the same delicious shredded beef that comprised my machaca. A bit of sour cream topped one chimi and guacamole the other. She said her chimichangas were both excellent. So, a nice place with really pleasant and efficient service, a broad menu with reasonable prices, and really good upper level Mexican food. Today's food was some of the most flavorful Mexican food I've had in awhile. Rate today's overall dining experience FOUR AND A HALF STARS for excellent. Can't wait to return. read more

Lucy's Café North has been around a long time, and the food is definitely a step above fast‑food Mexican -- solid flavors, generous portions, and familiar dishes. When the kitchen is on, the plates come out hot and satisfying. Service is hit‑or‑miss. If you can get someone's attention, they're friendly, but it can take a while to flag anyone down. It's not the place to go when you're in a hurry or hoping for quick refills. The seating could use an upgrade. The chairs are hard and uncomfortable, and for a restaurant that's been in business this long, you'd expect something easier to sit in. The noise level can get moderate to loud during busy times, which doesn't help the comfort factor. Temperature is another issue. Whoever controls the thermostat seems to prefer extremes -- it's usually either noticeably warm or noticeably cold, rarely anything in the comfortable middle. It feels like the dining room is catching whatever temperature the kitchen is running. Parking is convenient as long as the lot isn't full, but it can get tight during peak hours. Overall, it's worth stopping by during off‑peak times when things are calmer, but it doesn't quite land as a favorite vibe for me. The food is better than Taco Bell, but not strong enough to make it an everyday stop. Still, it's a familiar neighborhood option when you want a hearty plate and have the time -- and patience -- for the experience. read more

*Dined-3.23.24: Came here for breakfast before I left town as it was recommended. I had the Chile Verde and Eggs which came with refried beans and hashbrowns & choice or corn or flour tortillas. I ordered corn and they gave me 6 tortillas wrapped in aluminum foil so they stayed nice and hot while I ate. Not sure it I was to share them with my dad b/c I sure was surprised they were generous to give me that many, I was expecting 2-3. My dad got the Huevo Rancheros. We both enjoyed our breakfast. The beans were tasty. As a starter they give you fideo soup which I really wanted to finish but it was just way too salty, neither one of us could eat it. Customer service was good and price was just right. I'd come back when I'm back in town to try something else. Always good to support local! read more

The food here was amazing! My family were passing through from the airport to New Mexico and stopped here after a recommendation. It was a fifteen minute drive from retrieval of our rental car and delicious! The portions were large, customer service impeccable - our server was Ricardo - and all of the food super tasty. Great price - normally to feed our large family costs an arm and a leg. Our faves were the bean tostadas, chicken carbon tacos, egg and sausage burrito, and the machaca burrito. Everyone was thoughtful, attentive and friendly and the food was 5 stars (from each of our five children!). Will most definitely return on our way back through El Paso for our return flight. I wish we had a place like Lucy's Cafe back home. read more

My wife and I have been doing Saturday lunch at Lucy's for the last few years. Service is great, but last 6 months, food no longer consistent. Two examples: Bean and Cheese Burritos used to be served on a toasted tortilla, now they seem to be microwaved, soggy, overcooked. Hamburgers used to fill the bun, cooked medium-well, with toasted bun. On my recent visit, the burger filled half the bun, was overcooked (burnt around the edges), and the outside of the bun was soggy (not from the burger meat- water or something?). I know Lucy's staff can do better than this, I hope that they will in the future. Trying to present constructive criticism, hope this helps. read more

This is definitely a little hidden gem in the NE and I'm so glad we tried it. I eventually realized this is the famous Lucys but their NE location (duh me). We wanted some breakfast and they delivered. The staff was fast and attentive and the food came out nice and hot. They served us chips and salsa and a little bowl of fideo (soup) before our meal (I thought it was odd since it was breakfast but then again why not). The prices are so reasonably priced, wish I would have gotten a menu pic. They even have a mini breakfast for like $4.99 that I'm very intrigued to order next time. I swear I am failing as a Yelper... I have come to this place so many times and yet this is my first time checking in and giving it a review. Sad Face. Two words. Taco Tuesday. I think I am obsessed with tacos lately, like, seriously. I usually eat chilaquiles when I come to Lucy's but since it is taco Tuesday I had to carry the tradition on. So I am here waiting for my chicken tacos. Yes... I recently began eating chicken again and so far it's been an ok journey. I am pretty confident that my tacos are going to be amazing. Lucy's isn't fancy, it isn't big. But the artwork on the walls is for sale and I think they are all local artists. Regardless, the food is good and cheap. There are three tables that only seat two people and six tables that seat four and there have been times I've come in and there were no seats available. Annnnd the tacos were great!!! This place uses yellow corn tortillas and the flavor was amazing. I could just eat the tortilla and be happy . The salsa verde added the right amount of heat that I like and the masa on the tamale was flavorful. I will definitely be back to give something else on the menu a try! read more

The Chilaquiles are the best I have ever had in the US. Authentico! This is a must stop for breakfast when you are in El Paso

First off, it's a diner. So manage your expectations around that. That said, it's a great diner. Actually, this would be my go to spot if I were local. Everything I had was delicious. I got the Machaca breakfast. It had the most flavorful cheese sauce on it that I've ever had. Had chiles, tomato, and peppers cooked in it, to where each was tender and flavorful. It was so great! The whole meal was yummy. Warm corn tortillas, tender and juicy Machaca beef, perfectly scrambled and salted eggs, and flavorful retried beans. Even the chips and salsa were delicious (albeit pretty spicy). Everyone was SUPER friendly but not clingy. My husband got steak and eggs and wasn't crazy about it, but again - it's a diner. So him ordering a steak is just not my business :/. read more
