The Sarape on Montana is better than this place. Tables are never clean here, bad service, and not so good food. Let me elaborate. Each time we go to this Sarape, we try looking for a clean table. None of them are clean. They have grease smudges, salt, and something pieces of lettuce or tomatoes on them. No effort. The service? There is a specific waiter we dislike. He's arrogant, rude, and dismissive, he walks around like he's the owner (he's not), and deliberately ignores our table compared to others. We do think this has a discriminatory factor, as we only speak English, and my mother and I have light skin, whereas my father has darker skin. Yes, my mother and I are Hispanics. Is it so hard to accept that Hispanics can have light skin, too? Now, another issues, is the food. It's always bland, either overdone or underdone, and just disappointing in general. I ordered a burger awhile ago from here, the bun was soaking wet, the patty was bland, and the bacon might as well have been considered raw. Ordered tacos another time, hardly any meat, the shell was burnt and tough, the beans were hard, and the rice was old. They don't season their meat, everything is so bland. It's annoying. And we're always friendly to staff, mind you. But we do not receive kindness in return. Thus, we've stopped visiting this location, and have been going to Montana instead. The food there is good, the staff is polite and kind, and frankly, we feel much more welcome there. Oh, one more thing. I like listening to Mexican music, but they blast it so annoyingly loud in there that you can hardly hear the person next to you speak. That's not cool. A hidden gem in North East right off 54 and Dyer. Been coming for years and I'm always satisfied, great food, good prices, and good portions. Real authentic Mexican food . When I came to this restaurant before COVID it was THE best I had ever had so after COVID I was like heck yeah I'm ready. So wrong the Chimichanga that I used to get was smaller and the ground beef had not a lick of seasoning which left it tasting like grease. So disappointed. It was very crowded during lunch hours on Good Friday. There were families with children enjoying lunch. There were other patrons having a normal workday lunch. The combination of the two created a very lively atmosphere, and I loved it. There was a Lenten special menu available with fish for those who don't eat meat on Friday (or entire Lenten season). I shamelessly chose Caldo de rez--beef and vegetable soup. Actually, I have eaten here a long time ago (approximately 14 years) while I was stationed here before. I remembered this Mexican restaurant with wonderfully fond memories of good food and good times. My beef soup was very very good and very reasonable. I opted for a large bowl...it came with a small bowl of Mexican rice and four corn tortillas. Of course, they give you complimentary chips and salsa (two different types, incidentally one was a little too hot for me, but the other--a fresh salsa was very tasty and not too hot) almost as soon as you are seated. All that for $5.85!! Added atmosphere enhancing deal was the live music--a man with his guitar going around the restaurant serenading. He had a nice mature voice...I thought that was really nice and added so much to the atmosphere. I even tipped him since I had such a good time eating my soup and listening to his singing. One negative thing was folks were talking very loud as if they needed to talk over the singing. Overall great dining experience. I will come back again for sure. Highly recommended. read more

If my life were a movie, it would be a comedy-drama and at least two scenes during the movie would be inside El Sarape. ES was my weekly ritual when I was in high school and going back brought a rush of memories of my many trips to eat some of EP's best Mexican. Yes, it's better than L&J's and Kiki's (hold off on hunting me down with torches and pitchforks until you've been). The first thing I thought of when I walked in was eating burritos here my senior year with the debate team and coach (yes, during school). Those things were so good and for cheaps and we would've stayed until we finished, but to our dismay a vice-principal from school walked in. We immediately bowed our heads in hopes that we wouldn't be spotted, until it occurred to me that the VP too was playing hookey. We smiled, said "hello" and continued eating our breakfast of burritos and chips with salsa. We had a mutual understanding that none of us would ever speak of this (at least in school). Good times, good times. The only immediate difference I spotted this time around was the addition on the side that includes maybe eight more booths. I think the addition was a good idea because this place does get packed to the brim during the weekend, but now the parking lot is even smaller than before so expect to park on the side street (NEVER DYER) if you decide to venture here on a Saturday or Sunday. I, unlike 92% of the world, actually enjoy eating alone so I made this trip solo and to my surprise, they were surprised that I was dining alone and even got a, "Really?" Yes, really. I sat my self towards the back and happily found myself seated on the good old yellow and green booths that seem unsure of themselves (they're hard wooden booths with a small built-in cushion for your tushie...I still ponder why they got rid of the original Pizza Hut booths since those things were beyond comfortable, but c'est la vie). I love the constant buzz that's happening at ES. Like clockwork, a waitress appeared with a menu and chips and salsa. Mannnnnnn...that salsa (and pico de gallo)...it's too good. The best in Texas! I decided to go with the Tampiqueña Steak and it was everything I hoped for! Well-done, but juicy and covered with a good amount of cheese and slightly sauteed onions, jalapenos, green peppers, and tomatoes. I want this again and again. And for under $10 it came with beans, rice, tortilla soup, "salad", and a red enchilada. Why is salad in quotations? Because it's just a slice of tomato on top of iceberg lettuce. I wish they took a page out of The New Clock's book and topped it with Thousand Island dressing because that makes "salad" a tad more bearable. Everything else is on point and their tortilla soup is my favorite (mostly because whenever I get it, it doesn't have chicken in it, but the broth is still seriously flavorful). And the icing on the cake is the mere fact that ES is not stingy with the cheese...if it's supposed to have cheese, it will...and a lot of it. The only thing that left something to be desired was the service, but I've noticed it makes people uncomfortable when I'm solo-dolo. Perhaps I have RBF. Either way my waitress dropped off my drink, took my order, brought my plate, and attended to (and checked on) every table but mine. I had to politely interrupt her while she was checking on other tables around me for a refill and it took me nearly 20 minutes to get her attention for the check. But it's worth noting she was pleasant when she did come around. As I was leaving, one final memory came to mind...the final time I had ES. I didn't even actually stay and eat at ES, but the morning after a party at my dad's house (that he threw, not me) we called ahead for enough menudo for 10-20 people and were told to bring a pot. Yes, we took our own pot and they filled it up with there amazing menudo and gave us a bag filled with breads, oregano, crushed red peppers, and onions. I don't know if this is a normal thing they do or if it had something to do with the fact that we were regulars, but one word: awesome! read more

Had dinner here Friday night and it was ok. The food is 3 star but the entertainment and atmosphere is 4 star. Live singer was really good and the servers were kind and prompt. I've been coming here for years and I've loved it here. Food is great, prices are awesome, but since the pandemic I haven't come as often. It gets really crowded and it's a small place packed with people. My wife and I wanted their food and we decided to get our food to go and we phoned in our order. As I picked up my food from cashier, it was so crowded that I barely had room to stand. I stood there shoulder to shoulder with other customers and I was just watching and waiting for my turn to pay and pick up my food. I noticed the cashier would bag the styrofoam to-go containers. The white plastic bags are hanging on the wall and they're the plastic Walmart type bags we're all accustomed to that are hard to separate and open so you spend 5 extra minutes in the self check out vowing that you'll bring your own bags next time but you never do because you put them in your car, but forget to bring them in the store so then you remember at the self checkout line but it's too late so you struggle to open the bag and it makes you wonder why you keep doing this to yourself? Yeah, that's kind. The cashier dipped her hand in the dirty dish water that the wait staff is dumping customer plates in to moisten her hand and separate the bags. I took the food and tried to carefully separate the container from the bag but my wife got sick anyway. I don't think we'll be back to this location. read more

Have always wanted to try this place because it's across the street from where we gas up The Subaru at a Chevron. Finally did and man we should have come here wayyyyyyy sooner. Came here for lunch and it hit the spot. The chicken mole was sweet and my wife's Milanesa torts was humongous. All for less than $20. Been searching out a great breakfast place in northeast El Paso with my father for a while. We grab the current rugrat in the morning(I have two.) and head out. We've tried nearly a dozen places, but this is becoming my favorite. Prices are good pico de gallo and chile come to the table immediately with chips, for free. They are really good! The food just continues to get better from there. Fluffy pancakes, juicy sausage patties, and genuinely fine slow-cooked chile Colorado and chile verde con crane. The eggs are cooked well. We were the only gringos in here when we came in, so that is always a good sign for good and authentic Mexican food. The food was good, the service excellent and the prices were very low...4 Dos Equis, and lunch for two all for less than $20. Salsa was a 4 on the spicy scale. Delicious as always - we went on a Sunday afternoon so my only complaint was how loud the mariachis were - but I realize that is part of the experience, it was just overwhelmingly loud! Shrimp cocktail was delicious huevos con chorizo was delicious - but the side Chile relleno was lacking this time. No cheese and over broiled - I'm assuming they were just so busy they couldn't handle the crowd and maintain their normal quality. Prices are really reasonable too. Avg price is around $5 per plate for breakfast. Service is friendly and food comes out fast. It really is a hit or miss for this place. Sometimes we come and the food taste phenomenal and other times we come here and the food is literally just ok. I personally have been coming here often in the morning because back home it's very normal for us to eat soup in the morning. So I come here before work, eat a caldo de res (beef soup, which typically taste great in the morning with a nice warm cup of rice) go over my reports and go about my day. I'm not to crazy about the food in the evening. It really does lack a lot of salt. I'm not sure if their catering to people with high cholesterol or what but man their regular food, like their barbacoa, carnitas, even their house made salsa really could use some flavor. But in the mean time I'll continue to come for my small caldo de res and rice to jump start my mornings. read more

This was my first visit to this location. I normally go to the one on Montana. I have always had an overall experience at the other location so when my wife suggested it for lunch, I was all in. I was concerned at first due to the large crowd during the Sunday Lunch Rush but that was quickly remedied once we had a table in only a few minute wait. The Servers are busy. They move quick and don't miss a beat. I am alway instantly happy when I order tea and they bring me my own pitcher for future refills. This is usually a sign of smart management. I selected the Shredded Beef Taco with beans and rice and my wife went for the Menudo. The food was top notch! What blew me away was the price.... The plate was huge and it was only like $4!! My super Americanized kids ordered a burger, and breakfast food! They said it was tasty! The burger was huge, and the breakfast was eggs, hash browns and crispy bacon. They loved it. The waitress was very nice and was patient with me while we figured out what we wanted. On Sunday, my parents went out top eat and invited me with them. Although I didn't feel like Mexican food since I had some the day before, I decided to join them anyway. By the time I got there, they were eating so didn't get to try their food, just the enchilada sauces. The only comment I heard from them was the gordita was not fully cooked through. It feel apart on the outside and was gummy in the middle. The sauces on their plates were both okay (as is usual, I preferred the green to the red), but nothing spectacular. While I was waiting for my two burritos that I ordered, I noshed on the chips and salsa. The salsa had a decent taste, a little kick but was your basic nondescript salsa. The pico de gallo was similar in taste, was nice and chunky, but was way to soupy. Basically, it was like cold tomato soup. Both salsas were overly salty, which seems to be a common problem nowadays. The chips were fresh made, and most were fine, but some weren't drained properly and they had left over grease on them giving them an unpleasant chew. Even though it wasn't on the menu, I ordered a guacamole burrito, which wasn't what I got. I got a tortilla with avacado inside of it, not dressed. I like avacado, so that's fine, just not what I expected. The other was egg and potato. This burrito had a good salt level, and the eggs were dry. That's a great thing. I hate when eggs have any runniness to then when they are served plain! I ended a meal with an order of chiles toreados (here, grilled jalapenos. Some other venues, jalapenos in soy sauce and onions. Both good) which were grilled well with one that was flaming hot. I did feel bad for our waitress. It was 4:45 and the place was packed. She got everything right, but she seemed a bit overwhelmed. Also, the booths were uncomfortable. They have cushions that don't cover your rear, so it hangs over; and I don't have a big rear! They should either go with larger cushions or get rid of them completely. The meal overall was decent, but with all the other Mexican restaurants around, it didn't offer anything that made me say I need to go back. read more

I'm leaving the review here cause the Montana location doesn't show up. Overall a pretty mediocre experience. We got the lunch special which included soup, the caldo de rez soup was watery and didn't have any flavor, I may have gotten two teeny bites of meat. On my Mexican plate the beans and rice were okay, the taco was average at best and the tortillas on the enchiladas were hard, the cheese unmelted. The service was mediocre also.
