Stopped in here for brunch/lunch the Saturday of family weekend at WCU expecting we may have a long wait. Much to our surprise we were seated immediately. I ordered the Greek omelet and boy was I impressed! I love omelets and frequently make them at home so I am sometimes disappointed when I order them at restaurants and find them bland. This one was not! It had so much flavor. I ordered cheese grits and seared greens as my sides. The cheese grits were stone ground and the greens were garlicky and cooked perfectly. Son loved his chicken and waffles and vegetarian daughter enjoyed the plant burrito with vegetarian chorizo which she had never tried. Husband ordered the special which was like a big waffle sandwich. Prices and portions were reasonable and it kept us full for the great football game that afternoon! He loved the clown waffle and mom and dad loved the avocado toast 2 (how they were able to sear the tomatoes so yumm-ily was a 5 minute conversation at our table!) and the Velt's Cafe sandwich. Not many breakfast options near where we are staying. Tried for the review status. Server and other staff were incredibly friendly , observant and quick to turn the food around. Just lovely people. The stars are for them. Got the five and dime omelet which was ok (didn't ask for the hollandaise sauce which was extra, but it was lacking in the white pepper and Dijon department by a 100%, didn't taste any.) but it all went down hill with the sides chosen and the chef's unconventional take on sausage gravy and biscuits that my husband got. The biscuits had the consistency of being bread with a touch of Bisquick , not traditional southern biscuits one would come across traveling in the south and I actually had to ask the server if it was made with a plant-based meat substitute...she said it was not. This is going to sound harsh but it's the best description I can give is it tasted like what I imagine canned dog food tastes like. Given the part of the country you're in, if you're not going to have traditional biscuits and sausage gravy as it's conventionally understood, and you're doing "your spin on it", yo I probably should give the diner a heads up. It really was inedible but my husband will never send anything back unless it's undercooked. The greens were non-descript in the menu. Bc they were a mix of spinach and kale (it seemed) which cook at different rates, it didn't turn out well. Love spinach and kale , but not like this. They can't help the acoustics but it lends towards being loud and we did have to ask to be moved to the other dining room where there was less people. Primary offender was a table that seemed like they forgot they weren't at the bar anymore and needed to take it down about 10 notches. You do have an option to sit outside if you prefer, off of the sidewalk. Back to making it myself or trekking to Beach Mountain Diner in Waynesville, no disappointments there! read more

We were looking for a good place for breakfast while we were on a trip to WCU. This place hit the spot! VERY busy but there's a reason. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive without hovering and the food was delicious. I got the impression that whatever we had ordered would have been perfect. I did notice a very long line, folks in waiting, for the restrooms. Apparently they have more customers than the facilities can accomodate. A definte must stop next time we're there. read more

Hands down one of the BEST places in Sylvia to get a great meal :) I love that they have kombucha on tap, a variety of fresh breakfast options (making me always want to try something new) and yummy bakery treats too! Service is good, especially for how busy they always seem, but I've also never had to wait too long for a table either. read more

Poblano Jam Smash Burger! From the first bite to the last...fantastic! Darn, I'm dreaming about having another and I'm almost 500 miles from home. Per the waitress, this burger won 3rd place at a burger contest - I can't imagine #1 Greg's Grilled Ham and Bacon was good too but his potatoes were dry. My grilled kale was great! We were on the way home from Highlands, NC and decided to stop for breakfast. It was a very cute town. All of the staff were very welcoming and friendly. We couldn't believe how quick our food came out, which was nice since we were trying to get back on the road. I had the 2 egg classic. The potatoes were rosemary flavored and were delicious. The sausage had really good flavor too. We both chose the marble rye bread and wow! So good! My husband had a side of fresh fruit and we were surprised at how good the fruit was for January! My family and I, the 5 of us had breakfast on Friday, October 21, 2022 since it was close to our hotel at the Blue Ridge Inn. My daughter had the biscuit bandit, which is the best biscuits and gravy that I have ever had. 2 family members had the Florentine Benedict and 1 had the Babylon Benedict, which they enjoyed. This is an eclectic place both in terms of decor and food. The food ranges from Southern to deli to healthy (they even have a vegan breakfast sausage option) to...wait for it....one of the best Greek dishes I've had outside of Greece or my yia-yia's (grandma's) kitchen. I'm talking about what they list on the menu as "spinach pie with strawberry fields salad". The spinach pie is what we Greeks call spanokopita, but if they put that on the menu in a non-specifically-Greek restaurant, most people would be confused I guess. Whatever you decide to call it, it was incredible. The phyllo pastry was so light and flaky in its layers, with great taste, as was the spinach and cheese on top of it. The salad was also good, although a little strange paired with the spinach pie. A traditional Greek salad would be a better pairing I think. But maybe spinach and strawberries are a thing, or maybe the owner is a Beatles fan (if you are under 50, just google the first two words of the salad name). Not surprisingly, the owner is Greek and applies his heritage well to this dish. So if you're in Sylva and want to sneak in some Greek food -- or Southern, deli, healthy or whatever, definitely check this place out. The service was very good, too, BTW. read more

Had a large group for Sunday brunch. The restaurant was full, which I'm sure explains the long wait between ordering and receiving our food. They are usually slammed on the weekends so as a local I avoid it at all costs but the weekdays are super chill and theres rarely a wait. I wish they stayed open a bit longer but its a small town vibe so i get it. I would have given 5 stars but one recent day in November my partner and I came in and there was a wait so we were given a buzzer from the hostess. After standing outside for what felt like ever we went in and checked and the host had crossed our name off the list saying we didn't show up when they buzzed us so we lost our spot. The buzzer never alerted us! We were standing right outside the front door. She refused to seat us next and said she would put us back on the list at the bottom. As you can imagine this was very frustrating since we had waited close to an hour. My partner was visibly annoyed and we left hungry. There is also a very lax dress code for foh (front of house) employees. Ive noticed some mid-drift shirts and very short shorts which seem inappropriate and questionable for a Family establishment. read more

Full disclosure this is a combination of two visits about a week apart. Last week was Sunday brunch which included a very long wait for my food and servers and kitchen staff flowing a customer out to the sidewalk for threats and foul language. Today there are three servers with five tables between them and I can't get a drink refill. One of the other servers standing about six feet away saying "what the f**k" multiple times is a nice addition to my breakfast. As has been said multiple times this place has amazing food, but the service is poor at best. I have been here twice and while the food is wonderful the servers ruin the experience. Most likely will not return. I was inclined not to come back a second time, but figured I would try another time besides Sunday brunch. If they ever are able to get their FOH in order it would be one of the best places to eat breakfast west of Asheville. read more

We were headed to another eating place in Sylva when we saw a "Grand Opening" sign on Lucy in the Rye. We decided to give it a try. I ordered their egg breakfast (scrambled egg, sausage links, rosemary potatoes and biscuit) and my husband got a breakfast sandwich with sausage on a biscuit. First of all, I applaud their use of local ingredients, especially meats from Hickory Nut Gap Farm. They have amazing meats!! I would classify our visit as glitchy. We asked to sit outside and for a table to be wiped down. We stood by the table for a while before someone arrived to wipe it down. Both of us ordered unsweet ice tea to with our meals. My husband's glass arrived with obvious lipstick still on the glass. When it was replaced, he was given sweet tea and then was told they were out of unsweet tea when he asked her to switch out. The next thing we knew, our server arrived back at our table with a glass of unsweet tea, saying she had been mistaken. After that, our server arrived to say that they were out of biscuits, offering an English muffin or toast instead. My husband said an English muffin would be fine, but the server took off before I could answer. I'm not a big fan of English muffins, so I caught her attention the next time she came back and told I'd rather have toast. She said she assumed we both wanted English muffins. As far as the breakfast goes, the sausage, potatoes and whole wheat toast were great. I have to say, though, that I have never had more dry scrambled eggs!! My husband's egg on his sandwich was not as dry, though still more dry than typical, but I have no idea how someone could make eggs as dry as mine was. How can you so badly screw up scrambled eggs? I have no idea. My husband asked for ketchup for the potatoes I shared with him, but the top was quite messy when he flipped up the lid. He had to wipe it down before he felt comfortable using it. In this time of COVID, these types of things matter. I would also suggest locating a local honest-to-goodness real jam supplier instead of those little processed jelly packets. It would more fit the promotion of local suppliers. I believe this place has a lot of potential. That is why I am writing this review. Tweaking a few things would have made our meal much more enjoyable and I would be writing an entirely different review. I realize they are new - although we were told they had been open since February despite the grand opening sign - but first impressions make lasting impressions. We will give this restaurant another chance, because I believe in supporting local small businesses. I hope our next experience is better. read more
