First off, if all you need is a piano tune, use Michael. Michael's way of tuning is without…read moreelectronics. He uses the overtones and tunes the piano relative to itself, so it sounds correct. If you need work done on your piano, Michael is the most qualified, proficient, and reasonable expert you could possibly get. I've known Michael for 20 years, and have always trusted his judgement. My family piano is a 70 year old Baldwin baby grand. Played constantly since 1950, its hammers desperately needed replacing. Overtones were out of control. The mechanical back end of this piano had never been touched. We discussed whether to fully rebuild and tear it down- restring, and restore it. Costs were discussed honestly and candidly. We decided for Michael to replace the hammers and shanks and see where to go from there. Michael removed the action from our piano and took it to his shop, sent out hammer samples to have the hammers and shanks made custom from Germany, and with zero delay installed and regulated them. This was just the start. Michael bleached, cleaned, scrubbed, and adjusted all keys and the entire action to make it all feel like silk and move like sprung oil. When he reinstalled the action at our house, it was pretty close to dead on- he adjusted the regulation and action of the hammers, instantly NIGHT and DAY comparison in tone. Full real whole tones now sing from this glorious instrument, with the bass twice the thickness as before- I was able to go bottom to top chromatic octaves high speed with precise breaks in between all notes. Then he tuned it. Now the family piano will continue to serve for another 70 years. Next year I plan to have Michael replace the strings......

Michael quoted me for a "Free consultation" on Yelp and asked me to provide him details. It took about a week to get his partner Ken, who lived in my area to stop by for a quick estimate. Ken determined that it was nearly impossible to fix it without occurring high cost. He told me QUOTE "...there's only 2 people in Northern California who can do a legendary work like this. One is talking to you in your living room.. and the other is my partner, Mike..." Through Ken's Legendary assessment, he said it requires 4 people @$600/hr with 15-20 (really? Just for screw bolt...) he then offered $400 for my piano... I felt like Ken was trying to rip me off, so I declined his offer to part our ways. Ken came back demanding a payment of $250 for the consultation fee, which was supposed to be Free. I declined the payment, and he started commenting towards my mother of how bad of a son she had raised. Then I told him to get out, and then he started calling his wife, and had his wife talk to my mother over the phone of how rude I was of [not accepting $400 sell offer or paying $250 on a "Free Consultation"] Then I called the police on speaker phone.. and he finally decided to leave. While packing up, he STOLE 2 big bolts that belonged to our piano. Ultimately, I was able to get our Mover's insurance to compensate all the repairs.. so that's that. But Mike and Ken.... stay away at all costs!

I highly recommend Jian Min. My daughter used to play piano but hasn't in years. Recently my 6 year…read moreold granddaughter started lessons and I decided to get it tuned. It's been about 20 years! Jian arrived on time, after examining he quoted me a price of $145 for medium level tuning and recommended 6 month retuning. It took him about 1 1/2 hours. He needed bright light and absolute quiet. He even had us turn off the heater. One key was stuck and he fixed that as well. I had looked around- several music teachers do this as a side job and a local person wanted more than double for the same service. If you want dependable, high quality workmanship at a reasonable price this is the place!

I bought my upright over 10 yrs ago. It was tuned for the first (and last) time about 9 years ago. I was sort of embarrassed to share that but felt he should know anyway. Jianmin simply said that due to it being so long since its last tuning, he would have to come back for a 2nd tuning to make sure it's going well. I believe his assessment is accurate and trustworthy. After the 2nd tuning session, I will have him come annually. FYI: Jianmin is very quiet, polite, and gets to work right away. He did asked for absolute quiet, which I think would make sense if you want things done right. I like people who are more focused on providing 100% quality work than being focused on small chit-chat.
