I have the Lucky app on my phone that one uses for their digital coupons. I bought corn on the cob and strawberries, showing the items on my phone. i told them, the Save Mart had a bug. I put the corn on the cob in my own plastic bag. A male barked at me, "I guess you want me to take the corn on the cob out of the bag, distrusting me. Then he screamed at me, "Give me your phones" several times. A woman came to the register, telling me I had to have it open upon leaving the house. I explained that the software has a bug and that I could not complete registration. The cashier was polite, but these two other individuals were beyond RUDE.. I never experienced rudeness from Trader Joe's employees. They are professional being kind and helpful. I am removing Luck'y'e from my list. It was a very upsetting experience. read more

Before Covid 19, this store was far better than today. I went there 3 months ago, as I needed a bottle of water for the road. It took 3 people and more than 10 minutes to locate the new location for bottled water (all by itself, not near anything soda or juice related). My husband shops there for minor items (as Wholefoods is temporarily closed, and I won't go near this place again). The last 3 times (in one month) my husband came home with garlic, red onions, apples and mangoes... all of the worst quality. Onions (in the net) constantly more than 50% unusable, , garlic rotten in the middle (so you can't even see they are bad), and out of 4 apples 1 was garbage after 1 day. And... the prices are equivalent to Wholefoods most of the time, just a horrible quality. I will highly recommend NOT to buy vegetables here, and the fish department has always looked and smelled "fishy". read more

The bathrooms are disgustingly dirty. It makes you wonder how their bakery, meats, produce is because where do the employees go to the bathroom. If they use the same restroom as the customers then the sanitation must be terrible. Grocery stores have enormous markup and margin and they have been taking advantage of the consumer ever since Covid started. It's disgusting that they can't put some money back into the restrooms. Even the soap dispensers are broken and it's this ugly stainless steel sink and the floor is always Has urine on it. Very disgusting and then people are walking around the store after using the restroom. We ordered a dense, two-ton chocolate cake (from SBF, Sunnyvale) for the last family birthday and were still recovering from it when the next birthday rolled around. Time for something different: but where can you get a reasonably priced, moist, flavorful, store-bought birthday cake? We thought we could find one at Safeway, but their "carrot" cake looked burnt and tasted like spice cake with a few bits of carrots. Horrible. So bad, I decided to try Lucky's the following week. It was everything we expected a traditional carrot cake to be, right down to the WALNUTS which Safeway lacked. I am looking forward to trying other cakes in Lucky's bakery. Final thought: the people that complain about Lucky would be lost without it. Wanna fight the parking at TJ or travel way out there to get to Safeway? Shopping during the coronavirus pandemic! Don't normally come here to posh Los Altos, as the Luckys on North Mathilda and El Camino Real/Lawrence are closer to my house, and Safeway, Trader Joe, and Sprouts within easy walking distance to where I live. Only came here as my dentist was close by in Sunnyvale. Had difficulty finding the place, as hidden behind trees and not easily visible from the Foothill expressway. Standard architecture, rectangular building with no windows, except at the entrances, and bright red Lucky logo sign. Like casinos, windowless supermarkets designed to keep you inside as long as possible, with no view of the outside, to lose track of time. Small parking lot in need of resurfacing. Pandemic local ordinances: limit on number of people who can be in the store, social distancing 6 feet apart at the entrance, employees and customers required to wear masks and no outside shopping bags allowed. Senior citizen employee collecting and sanitizing the handles of the carts. Tuesday at 1pm, there is no line outside Luckys, unlike the Trader Joes 0.7 miles down Foothill expressway. Not as roomy inside as the Luckys on El Camino Real/Lawrence. Came here for their $7.99/lb Atlantic salmon, as opposed to sockeye salmon, which we don't like. This is the only supermarket chain that advertises Atlantic salmon on sale. Only problem is that the $7.99/lb is for a full fillet, which means 3+ pounds of fish. I go through about a dozen wrapped fillets, finally finding the smallest one for $23.41, compared to the $36.18 regular price. You know what the wife I will be eating for the next three dinners! Also stock up on 12 ounces of sliced bacon, normally $6.99, on sale for $2.99, and red cherries, on sale at $3.49 per pound. First time of the year they have red cherries, locally grown, on sale. You New York City yelpers won't find that on sale. Also get Driscoll's 2 pound pack of strawberries for $3.49. Things I might consider buying on another day if needed: 32 ounce rotisserie chicken at $6.99, $4.49 for 64 ounces of Oceanspray ruby red grapefruit drink, $3.70 gallon of milk (limit 2 per household), and $3.79 32 ounce nonfat plain yogurt, which my wife eats to keep slim. Shelves bare in the toilet paper and paper towel sections, taken immediately by hoarders, even with the limit of 1 purchase per household. We have 77 unused rolls of TP at home, purchased at Trader Joes, Safeway, Dollar Tree and Smart & Final during the first hour of opening on weekdays during the shelter in place which started March 17. Social distancing 6 feet apart at the check out counter, with a 6 minute wait. Plexiglass barrier between you and the early 20 year old cash register employee, not wearing gloves. Once the pandemic started, no geezers of either gender manning the cash registers, as it is the most dangerous job in the store, as getting the virus is life or death for us old farts, compared to people in their early 20s, who are likely asymptomatic. All sales final. Get the groceries in my car and check my text messages. Wife just got the supermarket ads in the mail Tuesday. Tells me to wait until tomorrow, Wednesday to go shopping at Luckys, when salmon will be on sale for $5.99 a pound, compared to $7.99 a pound today! read more

I stopped by the Deli today on my way home after a grueling 14-hour workday, and I fully expected them to be closed. Mostly my experience with Deli service in supermarkets is that they tend to go dark and silent at precisely 5 pm. I was thrilled silly to be greeted by a delightful young man who asked how he could help me, so I asked if they were still open, and he smiled and replied, "Of course! What can I get for you?" I was so hungry and tired that I would happily have eaten a burlap bag at that point, so I asked for the chicken salad, which he carefully packed and sealed and handed over with a smile. A side note: I am 75 and probably looked 103 after 14 hours on my feet, and we seniors are used to being invisible, but Mitchell treated me with patience, kindness, courtesy, respect, and genuine enthusiasm. He is literally the gold star that exemplifies "Gold Star Service"! I propose a raise and a promotion! And Lucky is now my first-choice deli! Plus the chicken salad was delicious! read more

Have to say you don't see many Lucky around anymore and when you do , hope it is a good one. This is a 5 star for sure. Usually find any food item I'm looking for and it always seems to be fresh if it's meat or fruits , etc. Which I always wonder how because the greatest part of this store beside the friendly staff is never busy. No idea how they don't have to rotate a lot of product , but make it work somehow. Plenty of parking , and in an easy area to get in and out as very few businesses around and none share the parking lot. Maria took the time to show me how to use the points I had accumulated for $10 off. She ensured the coupons I had electronically clipped (yoplait yogurt, deli, etc) were all applied. I really like the convenience of this store. I agree, the produce is not the greatest but it's okay. For pet food, canned items and boxed pasta, the prices are excellent. Parking is always available with easy access to the expressway. There have been a lot of changes and not all of them are positive. They have added a pre made food aisle and I avoid this area completely. You're not going to find Whole Foods quality here. I'm not sure why anyone would risk eating food that has been kept warm all day and is open to strangers. That's just asking for trouble. The most unpleasant change would be the new checkers. There are many new employees and not all have manners nor a cleanliness level for this job. Since they are touching money and food, they should keep their hands out of their hair and facial region. The two new cashiers are pretty rude and not very clean. I recommend trying to avoid buying more then 15 items because that is the self check limit. read more

I bought some food and it didn't say that it had pork in it, I don't eat pork. I called customer service about the fact that they didn't list the ingredients, which is why I made the mistake, her response was "you can ask the employees for the ingredients, they have it in a book in the back". That's a great solution, assuming the overworked employees and I have time for that. Just have your employees label things, it's ridiculous that I have to go out of my way for pertinent information regarding my dietary restrictions. read more

This is a review for Kelly who helped me in the bakery today. A co-worker had ordered a photo cake for a farewell party for another long-time co-worker, and I was picking just picking it up. Unfortunately, when I got there the cake had not been made. I think what happened is the person who got the image and does most of the cake decorating went on vacation without passing on the image to anyone. When I was struggling to talk to the counter person, an extremely helpful woman, Kelly, came to my rescue. She managed to find the image again online, print it, and decorate the cake in 20 minutes. We live very close to the downtown triangle of Los Altos and have been shopping for many years at the local Safeway store on 1st street, plus Andronico's on Foothill. The main reason I want to do this review is that I think the worker's at this Lucky store, are (forgive the pun) lucky to work there, under the management of Fred, the manager. He's always upbeat, and when I watched him engage with his workers it was always in a happy spirit. I have never seen a happier group of workers that are very helpful in helping customers find items by walking all around directly to the searched food. Also I noticed that the workers at the checkout stand are upbeat and extremely helpful with packaging items, helping with extra wrappings for hot soup, etc. I think this is due to Fred, the manager being upbeat 99% of the time. It's a 6 mile round trip from our home and well worth it. The only improvement that I would add is that the owner of the property should fix the parking lot pavement. Cheers ~ read more

Employees knew of issues with the store app/sale prices/coupons but was spoken to so rudely by the head clerk who was left in charge of the store. He was completely wrong and did not apologize even after another employee corrected him. Still overcharged when I left the store after more than a half an hour. Spoke to the manager the next day, who apologized, but should of rectified the issue by mailing me what I was overcharged by the very least. If you advertise a product you need to stand by it. You expect consumers to use your apps but they never work properly and this is my experience at all the grocery stores. This is FRAUD! read more

Chronically under-staffed, Chronically malfunctioning checkout equipment I love the staff here - they're great. But it seems management has decided they don't need as many people at work and everybody needs to do double duty. The entire time you're shopping you keep hearing "Need someone at check out" because they don't have enough checkers and they don't keep them there. So you're going to wait in long lines. The latest thing seems to be they don't have anyone dedicated to the self-check lanes now either. If something goes wrong, and these days it seems like something is always going wrong, there won't be anyone there on the spot to correct it so you can get on with it. This has been going on long enough it seems to be a deliberate decision by management, not just that they were short a few people a few times. It's gone from a pleasant experience which was like catching up with old friends to chronic frustration where I'm sad and angry by the time I manage to get out of there. OK, the other stuff. The new fridges and freezers are nice. They must have paid too much for them and are now taking out of the customer service. See, I can't get over it. That's how much it bothers me. Shopping at this Lucky is somewhat like shopping in a grocery store in the wilderness. It's located in Los Altos right at the border of Sunnyvale and Los Altos in a residential area with lots of trees and, as is the case with most of Los Altos, no streetlights or sidewalks. I stopped by to get some items and ingredients for our Christmas party that night. To begin with, the parking lot is relatively big. No need to worry about not finding parking. There's also a Goodwill donation truck in the parking lot if you need to donate some stuff. As for the store itself, they have pretty much everything you need for reasonable prices. I still try to avoid stores like Lucky and Safeway due to the fact that everything just seems so cold and lifeless inside. Don't expect to come here and find employees left and right who are there to help you like you would find at a Trader Joe's. As I walked around looking for a few things while listening to their elevator music playing in the background, I finally encountered an employee named Donovan who was stocking items in the freezer aisle. He was a real g. Thanks to him, I was able to find the last items I needed and then pay and leave. I can't really say too much else as I very rarely shop here. I think I'll stick with three stars as that's what my experience felt like. The store wasn't very busy, but, at the same time, was not empty either. I didn't see the savings below in smaller font and asked the cashier stationed at the self-check out stations. Rather than simply pointing out that if I subtracted the regular price and the savings on the screen, it would be equal to the sale price, he rudely chided me for not doing the math. No joke, I have found expired drugs, fruit, etc., every time. Today was cheese. Green despite September expiration date. My bag of bell peppers had mold. They have a terrible selection of organic. As Trader J's was not open; I cruised the missile over to this Lucky's. Oh, in the past ( like a couple years ago ), it was run down. I am happy to report, this one has an up-do! When you walk in, you will fancy the produce area, it's looks verdant and fresh. The new fruit tables are fresh and black -- upscale, nee upscale. Overall, I like this store, there is no discount login code to type at the cash register, instead, the astute shopper will see some very good prices. Yet, some of the goods are a bit higher priced; heck, in this part of the woods, that's no problem. Wine selection- good! Fruits and veggies-- look great! Eggs-- good prices. Somehow Lucky has slipped by on my review list. That shall be rectified NOW! Some aspects of Lucky that stand out: 1. Shockingly, their brand of yogurt. This yogurt discovery actually occurred by accident (the way most yummy new treats are found) when I was looking for Greek yogurt one night, and the market was out of most brands. Their own brand of Greek yogurt is both delicious, with a more pudding like texture that reminds me of dessert, and inexpensive coming in at $2 less than the other brands for four servings! 2. They have a Redbox so I always come here because they have a greater variety of movies than Safeway. 3. The bins! Anyone who has read my reviews knows how much I rave about the bins. Lucky has upgraded substantially to the same bin company as Andronico's, but they have an even greater variety! Along with the nut and chocolate bins, there are candy bins that are hidden in a different area with a decent selection of sweets. 4. In terms of produce, Lucky isn't half bad in terms of quality and price. They obviously don't have as extensive an organic selection as other places, but there are some good options. 5. Packaged food variety--Lucky has a pretty extensive variety of packaged food some of which can't be found at the closest Safeway location. 6. The prices here are very reasonable!!!!!! I always walk out having spent less than I would have at Safeway for a similar amount of food. They also have very frequent sales! While there are a couple products that are lacking, like their drink variety and hummus selection, this Lucky is a very solid market with good prices and variety. read more

I was looking for Red Star Platinum superior baking yeast that includes dough enhancers and found the closest store that carried it was Lucky. I made a special trip and found the item as indicated on the Red Star Yeast website. Unfortunately after I got home and started using it for one of my baking my Pane Bainco I noticed the used best by date had expired last year! I really wish they would stock items that had not expired by the best buy date! Maybe that is why my Pane Bianco did not turn out as great as I wanted it to. read more

I used to shop almost at Draegers but only buy pork tenderloin there. I am really turned off by their parking sign which threatens to boot your car. They certainly don't represent what is good about Los Altos. I know shop at Lucky where every one is friendly, knows where items area and items are easy to find. Their produce section is larger and has better products than Draegers. I buy my Berkeley and chicken at Lucky. It is really a pleasure to shop at friendly Lucky, with their high level of quality, large selection of products and everyone knows you. read more

The store feels a bit dingy, which is surprising for the location. The produce section is small. It is a large grocery chain that seperates consumers from the source of their food, but... The Kosher section is AMAZING! I went camping with my sister this summer (her family keeps kosher) and they had things in their kosher section she hasn't found outside of the midwest. I even asked some random other customer for help and he showed me where things were. I mean, the local Safeway has like 1/4 to 1/2 of one side of an aisle of kosher stuff. Luckys has somewhere aorund three double sided aisles, a meat section, a dairy section and a freezer section with kosher food that my sister says she's never seen before. She wished she lived aroudn here to take advantage of it. Other than that, this is the store I stop at when I need something quick & Trader Joe's is closed. It's only a few blocks from my house and they have self check out which makes it really convenient. I know where things are so it's a quick stop. I don't however do big shopping trips here. This is one of the two Bay Area Lucky stores that has a kosher section. They have 3 large aisles, a frozen and refrigerated section filled with Dr. Brown's soda, my favorite Traditions brand noodle soup (the yellow packs are the best but nearly impossible to find!), u-bet chocolate syrup, gold's horseradish, tabatchnick frozen products etc. Still no temp-tee cream cheese. Bottom line at the top: Open until midnight and very friendly employees!! -- Although this isn't my grocer of choice, it is the only option in this quiet town after 9 PM. This is where you come when you and your friends decide to have an impromptu movie night and you need snackage! :) I also have to give them props for the ice cream aisle.
