Overall, the food was pretty good. I liked how the sweet and sour chicken had vegetables in it and the sauce was flavorful. I was happy to see that they brought back their dine-in option recently! During my visit I ordered Crab Rangoon and Szechwan Chicken with saki (Tozai 'Snow Maiden' Negori). Crab Rangoon made for a good appetizer as I waited for the entree. As a fan of spicy food, I found the Szechwan Chicken to be a good balance of flavor and heat. The fried rice was bland, the pork spareribs were sticky, overly sauce-y and had a lot of fat. I had the order delivered after ordering on the website and it took over an hour. I made a big mistake and ordered the lemon chicken once and it was terrible. On another occasion I ordered beef mixed veg and it was mostly carrots. Other times it has been pretty good. After being serial take out customers we decided to dine in this afternoon. The staff and owner are always so helpful and on top of everything. I typically order the sesame chicken lunch combo, which comes with your choice of either white/fried rice and spring rolls/crab Rangoon. The food quality is always amazing, I don't think I can name a time where I was disappointed. Because we ate in the afternoon it was quiet in the restaurant, only a few other customers. Before a 6:30pm movie at the nearby Oriental Theater, I wanted to get dinner from somewhere in the area. I had recently bookmarked Lucky Liu's, so I figured it was good timing and the right opportunity to try them. I ordered the orange chicken combo with fried rice and crab rangoon. I also ordered two shrimp egg rolls. The egg rolls were sizeable, but other than the two shrimp I found in each, they were loaded with cabbage as filler. I give them credit for the egg rolls being homemade and not store bought quality, but I've had better. The crab rangoon were very good. The filling burst out after I bit into both because they didn't skimp on the cream cheese mix. The fried rice was fine. You certainly get a lot, but all I could see and taste was rice and egg. It would have been nice to have another texture/flavor of some sort to mix it up a bit, like onion or bean sprouts. The orange chicken didn't lack in flavor with a generous amount of sauce in the container. I don't normally eat orange chicken (I prefer General Tso's), but I was in the mood for it that night and was left satisfied. As of 12/6/2021 their dining area is still closed due to COVID-19. I didn't know this before I stopped, so I had to make a split second decision to either go somewhere else or order takeout and eat in my car. Since I already had it in my mind that I wanted to try Lucky Liu's, I ordered takeout and froze eating it in my car. Yes, freezing was clearly a result of my decision and not something that Lucky Liu's forced on me, but it's kind of ridiculous that their already small dining area is still closed. The order took like 10 minutes to make as we ordered from the restaurant window on a Friday night and the food smelled good but that's the only positive I can give to this place. The food was straight up bad. The drenched sauce on the stir fry was way too much and there was nothing good about the egg rolls. Midway thru my friends meal, he found an egg shell in his fried rice Mongolian beef meal and he just stopped eating after that. My first lunch choice was this new burger place but after driving around for 10 minutes and not finding any parking I moved on, I'm not paying $15 for a lot to have a $10 burger lunch. This place has plenty of street parking so stopped by for lunch and as usual I opted for a lunch special. The place it self was small with a sushi station and a few tables that looked clean but no one in it like most Asian places. The menu has all kinds of goodness including sushi but I would have the Mongolian Beef lunch special and one shrimp egg roll. The Mongolian Beef lunch special is a lot of food that came with egg fried rice and two crab Rangoon, I only order crab Rangoon when it's that or a spring roll because spring rolls do nothing for me. The crab Rangoon was crunchy with that sweet cream cheese filling and pretty good. The egg fried rice is simpl but tasty with perfect cooked rice and fluffy scrambled eggs. The Mongolian Beef was in a brown sauce that was not the sweet kind which I liked with big pieces beef and soft onions but on the mild side. The beef portions were perfect and they didn't try to overload it with the veggies and skimp on the meat like some places do on lunch specials. The egg roll was the better kind because it was not the micro one that a lot of places do today, fresh with chunks of shrimp and cabbage that had some crunch left in it while tasty in that crispy shell. Honestly this is one of the better Asian lunch specials that I have had in Milwaukee because it was generous food wise with fresh quality ingredients that was tasty and not just average like a lot of places. Don't understand some of the hate on here about Lucky Liu's. I always get it to-go (they don't offer dine in during COVID) and have never had bad experiences with incorrect orders. Parking isn't great on Van Buren but you can normally find a spot on nearby. Their lunch special averages around 7 dollars and is one of the best deals in the city. General Tso's is my go-to and the portions are generous. Fried rice with fluffy egg along with large portions of breaded, crispy chicken in a delicious General sauce. Add a spring roll or crab ragoon with it. I do wish they would make their food spicier but I say that about most places. Is this the best Chinese I have ever had? Absolutely not but it is some of the better Chinese in the city and at this price point its hard not to go with. I also recommend an hour afterwards for a nap because you will be in a food coma. read more

It was a ball of crab sauce in a soggy wet ball. Once again it's supposed to have a crunch this was a soggy wet ball of crab sauce. Over all this was a soggy gross pile of food all thrown in the same box together that tasted horrible. Feel like I got ripped off. This is a simple basic meal that's easy to execute but clearly they put no effort. My fiancé got the sesame chicken and it was just as gross. I have been a customer of Lucky Liu's for about 5 years now. I probably dined in twice, which was a pleasant experience, but I typically order delivery, because I'm right in the neighborhood. My order always arrives in less than an hour. There are a few dishes that I steer away from, just because I know that I can find better elsewhere. For example, the chicken in the chicken egg foo young is much like the chicken in chicken McNuggets. However, their veggie egg foo young and shrimp egg foo young are exquisite. The shrimp egg foo young contains tender, fresh, huge shrimp. Also, I cannot praise their wonton soup enough. It is simply the best that I have ever had. I last reviewed seven years ago and thought it was time for a COVID review. The same sweet and lovely people get you at a cut out plexiglass window as used to serve up the food. I absolutely miss visiting this place for their authentic Chinese teas (just like in China) as well as their great food. This was my first time eating food from Lucky Liu's and I'm a little disappointed. We placed an order for delivery for our office for lunch. The order arrived around the time we requested, for approximately half a dozen people. The prices were good for the portions; you receive plenty of food with the lunch combos. The flavors were unfortunately lacking for me (and another coworker who ordered the same item), although I think the food was mostly enjoyed by our group in general. I went with the Hot & Sour Soup, and the Lunch Combo Sweet & Sour Chicken with the fried rice and crab rangoons. I've never had Hot & Sour Soup before, and it was alright. It was a little on the bland side and some of the mushrooms looking kind of unappetizing, but in general it was decent. The Crab Rangoons were good in flavor but when they arrived, they were just semi-warm and a little soft. The fried rice was good, but the Sweet & Sour Chicken was disappointing. It's one of my favorite things to order, and it was extremely lacking in flavor and quality. The sauce came on the side, which probably saved the chicken breading from being soggy, but the chicken was so bland, even after adding the sauce. There were just a couple of small pieces each of the vegetables (green pepper, onion, carrot, and literally 2 pieces of pineapple), and they were uncooked which was so weird and unappetizing. If they had been more plentiful and sautéed I could see this dish being better, but it was really unfortunate and I wish I had ordered something else. There was a lot of food in my order, so the portions were large...but unfortunately it was a lot of food I didn't really want to eat. The place: Cute hole in-the-wall Chinese restaurant. Casual. Definitely a place you could wear jeans to (which I did). Has about 10 tables, 2-seaters up to 4-seaters. Eat-in and take-out friendly. The location: Around the block from Up-Down, the arcade bar. Easy to find parking nearby either on Van Buren or on one of the residential streets. Easily accessible off the route 15 bus. The food: We had spring rolls (with sweet and sour sauce and spicy mustard), an eel roll, and shared a sesame tofu entree. The spring rolls were fresh, warm, and crunchy. The spicy mustard has a great kick! The eel roll was high quality. I love eel rolls, and this one with cucumber was perfect. A great appetizer. The sesame tofu was lovely. Crispy and crunchy outside and creamy on the inside. Drenched in sweet and tangy sauce. Great portion to share between myself and Hubsy. We would have needed boxes of we had gotten separate entrees. The service: Service was pretty good considering there was only one server working Saturday dinner and handing out take-out too! I went here with a friend and this is her favorite Chinese food place in Milwaukee! I loved it and definitely will return. We dined in for this meal. It is somewhat hard to find parking if you don't find a spot on the street outside. The inside is a little quaint and nothing that special. We were the only customers who dined in when we were being served. The service was very timely and the staff was friendly and prompt with getting everything done. I ordered sesame chicken which came with rice and dumplings. The dumplings were very solid, filled with lots of meat (not sure what kind?¿). They could have been a little warmer and I would have enjoyed them more! They reheated well as leftovers. The sesame chicken was really tasty and there was enough extra sauce to add to the rice! There was way more than enough of that as well that could be shared or brought home for leftovers! I opted for the leftovers and ate that for dinner the next day which also was just as yummy! The price paid for the food was more than reasonable, can't wait to go back and eat there again!! I had a terrible experience with a delivery driver. Due to covid I asked for a contactless delivery. However, the driver kept insisting I come down to meet him and asked for my specific apartment number repeatedly. As a woman home alone it was unsettling, I PLEADED with him to just drop it and leave for over 5 minutes. He then proceeded to crane his neck to look into my apartment and sat in his car for over 15 minutes with my food. This was the worst delivery experience I have EVER had. Then, once I began to ate my food the experience got worse. The sushi roll was awesome, but the general Taos chicken wasn't chicken. It was so dry it was bark. I couldn't eat it. This review is based on my only visit so far. The menu is fusion of Chinese and Japanese, but Sushi makes up about 97% of the Japanese menu items. I started with Sunomono, a Japanese Sushi appetizer of sashimi pieces including crab meat, shrimp, saba and tako (octopus). They are served with a ponzu sauce. I wasn't wowed by any of it and in factm the saba had too much of a fishy taste to it. I had higher expectations for my entree. I went back to the Chinese side for this with a dish that I love to order, Cantonese Chow Fun with beef, which Lucky Liu's refers to as Beef Ho Fun on their menu. It is a dish of tender beef slices mixed into a pile of wide flat rice noodles and veggies. The sauce and flavor of the noodles is what make this dish for me moreso than the beef. I liked the texture of the noodles, but I thought they lacked in flavor. The beef was tender and flavorful. The sauce overall was ok, but again, it didn't wow me. I plan to return some day to try a different Chinese entree that is usually prepared well at other Chinese restaurants and I'll try a maki roll or two. Hopefully this was just an off night. There was only one other diner in the restaurant and there was a problem with him getting his order placed. He knew what he wanted, but it wasn't on the menu and Lucky Liu's seemed unable to accomodate. He wanted an Unagi Roll. Unagi (freshwater eel) is on the sushi menu. There is also an Eel Roll on the menu. The problem is that the Eel Roll is actually a cucumber or avocado roll topped with Unagi sauce. He wanted Unagi on the inside of the roll. The server had a difficult time explaining this to him, as did he have a difficult time understanding why she was politely and apologetically debating his request. I left before his order came out. I felt bad for the customer. It probably wasn't going to end well for him. read more
