I had an informal business lunch here yesterday. Three of us were coming from Long Island, and were meeting with someone in Orange County. I asked him for suggestions of somewhere closer to him, but between the two locations, and he suggested Locale, and a few others. This menu looked good online, so we agreed to meet here. When we arrived, we asked for a larger table, so that we could spread out a bit, since we had some reports to go over. They were more than accommodating, and gave us our pick of tables. It was just before noon, so we had the place mostly to ourselves. We found a suitable table, and were greeted by our server, Hernan. Bread was brought over right away. Focaccia and more of a rustic loaf, along with tapenade and hummus. Fresh, but nothing out of the ordinary. I've been on an octopus kick lately, and having seen it on their menu online, I knew that I was going to start with that. Another one of us also ordered it, and my partner ordered the smoked salmon and trout. The other party skipped the appetizer. The octopus was wonderful. Plenty of meat, and wonderful arugula and radicchio. It pair very well with the citrus infused olive oil. Thoroughly enjoyable, and, at $11, was nicely priced. i didn't see it on the dinner menu, but I don't know why it wouldn't be available then, but it would probably be a few dollars more if available. My partner was complimentary about the smoked fish. I stayed with seafood, and got the sea scallops at $18 ($29 on the dinner menu, but I'm not sure if it's the same quantity. This came with 5 or 6 nice sized scallops, which was plenty). The scallops were arranged in a circle, and a nice portion of white beans and sauteed escarole comes in the center of the plate. The blood orange sauce was dotted between the scallops, so you could actually not have any sauce if that was your preference, and you wouldn't have to order it without sauce. A little bit with each bite heightened the taste of the scallops, without overpowering them. Cooked perfectly, and delicious. Someone else ordered the ravioli, homemade, and filled with 4 different cheeses, and enjoyed it with the accompanying sauce. My partner, a big fan of swordfish, told our waiter that it was cooked just right, and was nice and moist. Our 4th, a vegetarian, got the eggplant ciabatta panini. He thought it was excellent, particularly the goat cheese. They had plenty of specials, and an ample amount of choices on the menu. All of the dishes that we saw others eating looked great! One table all ordered the burger, and it looked quite large. Quite a few people ordered the homemade black linguine. If you aren't watching carbs, and don't mind squid ink, it looked amazing. My partner ordered a tartufo, and some coconut panna cotta for all of us to share. Excellent, although nothing out of the ordinary. The rest of the items are the usual dishes you would expect---tiramisu, cheesecake, creme brulee, etc., but it was interesting to note that you could order select cheeses, including parmigiano reggiano, which is a nice change. Coffee was great, which isn't so unusual, but I drink it black, and without sweetener, so I really have an appreciation for a good cup of coffee. I have been let down quite a few times by a less than stellar cup of coffee after a great meal, so this made my meal complete. As for the rating...I had just given out my first 5 star review on my last restaurant review, and for that reason only, I didn't want to go 5 stars again. But, honestly, I completely enjoyed my meal, and so did the others. The service was tremendous, especially Hernan. He had patience with us while we had some business to go over. He gave us our space, yet maintained eye contact with us so we could let him know when we were ready to order. Our water glasses were constantly filled, yet somehow you don't notice them doing so, which is a good thing. I honestly can't justify giving them less than 5 stars. We aren't really in the neighborhood, but we do have clients in NJ, and it's very close to the GW Bridge, so I'm sure we will return. If it turns out that we just hit them on a good day, I'll amend my review. Until now, I highly recommend Locale! read more

We must have had the same waiter I read about in other reviews. He was obviously not into serving the diners at his tables. Food is pretty good but service is seriously lacking. After we were seated and given menus, asked if we wanted something to drink-we said we'd start with water, the waiter disappeared for an abnormally long time. When the waiter returned, he asked again if we wanted something to drink and we ordered drinks. He then disappeared again for an unusually long time. Bread was served with two toppings or dips- not sure what they were though as we weren't told. When the waiter finally returned with our drinks, he quickly disappeared again. After another long wait, we placed our order which was served in a reasonable amount of time by a server not the waiter. The ravioli was definitely home-made and very good as was the marinara. The other pasta was very al dente. Waiter did not return to ask about our food or if we wanted additional drinks. After the dishes were removed, we waited again for the waiter. He returned with dessert menus and we said we weren't interested but he dropped them on the table and left anyway. After a while, another server came to our table and asked if we wanted anything. My husband and I came to our favorite spot Locale on a beautiful Sunday with 4 close friends and our children for an outdoor brunch. From the moment we walked in, until the moment we left we had a wonderful experience. We sat outdoors and the patio was breathtaking. We felt like we were away on vacation. The food was delicious. We ordered a bunch of appetizers, you MUST try the zuccini flowers(which by the way come straight from their garden!!), and the baratta, to name a few. All of our entrees were delicious. The white sangria was so refreshing. We topped off the lunch with iced cappuccinos and their dessert platter. All foodies must give this local gem a try!! you will NOT be disappointed. Just attended a function for about 60 people, 2 hour wait for food, not ready for prime time

This place is good, at least when I went. I had the special of the day. (Veal Chops). Wow, it was cooked perfectly and I even shared it with a few people that I was with and they thought it was better than their meal. This place is expensive, house wine in 337 and pricey also, but the veal made up for it. Place is nice, could had better service, however, I am sure it will depend on the waiter or waitress you have, so your results may vary. I thought my Veal was great and cooked perfectly, but others in my table thought is was just okay and over priced. The ones that tried my veal though, thought it was great also. read more

If you are NYC foodie but can do without the traveling, you need to try this restaurant! My husband and I were driving by and noticed their huge outdoor patio from the road and decided to give it a try. We were greeted immediately, and when we asked for a table near the serene pond we were accommodated without any hesitation. The food was as good as the service.. We ordered the calamari to start (YUM!) and my rack of lamb was cooked to perfection. We will definately be eating here regulary! read more

You couldn't pay me to go back! Service was horrible. Waiter barely talked to us, didn't smile once, and slammed a knife on a plate when clearing dishes. Was very rude. Food was expensive. my family and I went here for thanksgiving dinner. it wasn't even crowded at all but service was incredibly slow. our waiter almost rolled his eyes when we asked if it was only the prix fixe menu available that night. everything tasted and looked like it had been mass produced. at least if you have a limited menu make sure it tastes good! read more

There are not a great number of restaurants in the Creskill, Alpine, Tenafly area, and a couple of those that we used to visit regularly on our trips to this area have closed in the last few months. So we have been trying several different places. Locale [certainly not for Low Calorie] is a satisfactory restaurant, but the quality of the food is not quite comparable to its high prices. And the service, well, our waiter really could not be bothered. My wife and I each had a glass of wine, an appetizer, and a main course. We also had a side of creamed spinach--which was magnificent. The atmosphere is satisfactory--not fancy, but well appointed in a minimalist way. It was comfortable, except too noisy. Tables were of ample size, linens were nice, silver and china most satisfactory. But the place is noisy. The outside of the restaurant is handsome, but you must walk through the bar to get to the dining room. The bread was outstanding, and came with two spreads that were great. When we asked the assistant for more bread--the waiter was seldom seen--he smilingly obliged. The wine, one my wife had ordered before, was wonderful, a Mendoza Malbec, big and ripe. Sorry, but I forgot to note the winery. My wife's appetizer was mussels, and they were very good. For her main course, she had the scallops, which she liked, but I thought were way too sweet with the orange sauce. My appetizer was a beet Napoleon. I love beets and Napoleons and make Napoleons myself, but this one was just ho hum. It consisted of three layers of cold beets with a slice of goat cheese and some basal between each layer of beets on a bed of about 1/4 cup of arugula--and there was supposed to be a sauce. It was served cold, was much too dry, and much too small when you consider it was just beets and goat cheese. My main course was a homemade cavatelli with garlic, oil, broccoli rabe, and sweet sausage. It was okay, in fact good,but could have used far more garlic. It was a modest size portion, however, and cost $18. My spouse and I shared an order of creamed spinach, best I ever had. Delightful sauce. So if it were just the food and wine and it cost 15 to 20% less, this might be a 4 star quality meal in terms of the food; but then, a star needs to be taken off even that for the waiter. When he finally came to wait on us, he kept looking over his shoulder to see something in the main entrance to the dining room, perhaps the folks being seated. It was very distracting, but could have been overlooked if everything else were in order. But when he told us the specials, he spoke softly, and given his strong accent, we needed to ask several times for him to repeat himself. This annoyed him--so why doesn't Locale just print a specials menu! When I was telling him my order, he tried to leave before I had finished--in fact, I was not even finished saying the second of three things I ordered. I called him back when he was about two feet away, and completed the order--I should have said I hope we aren't bothering you, but that would have spoiled what was to be a nice dinner in a nice restaurant. And it was a nice dinner in a nice restaurant, he just annoyed the stew out of me. We needed attention two or three times during the meal, and he was not seen or ignored us [we were both dressed well], but the assistant waiter was most attentive. He should have been the waiter, and the waiter should be washing dishes and away from the public. I am writing this review and give Locale 3 stars, my wife might have given it 31/2 stars, maybe even 4. I will definitely give this place another shot. Two stars is for "Meh. I've experienced better". Overpriced for the dish you get. Went as a party of seven for dinner, If you charge $18 for a bowl of Penne and Mushrooms, it better be unbelievable. It's not. $8 bowl of soup thats not any better than what you get out of a can. Price only bothers me when I don't get what I think I'm paying for. Many more great Italian restaurants in North Jersey to choose from for better food at a better price. Unless you need the coat check and valet service. I love this place! For a local restaurant it is fab. Comfortable atmosphere with a little bit of lovely thrown in. The food is terrific. The best short ribs around-served with creamy parsnips-yum! The veal picatta is the best I have had ever. Warm chocolate cake and panacotta on the dessert menu are to die for! Service is warm and wonderful. Eveyone is very friendly and makes you feel welcome. We recently had the worst meal we can remember in many years, at Locale. The food was tasteless and didn't resemble any Italian dishes we have had at other fine Italian restaurants. We were the only people in the place (wonder why?) and in addition to the terrible food, we were very uncomfortable the whole time. The waitress stood not far from us for most of our meal and every time we looked up, she was staring at us. There were also three other guys who obviously had nothing to do and would gather around her from time to time------then we had the whole crowd staring at us. I made a couple of comments, hoping they would hear and even gave them a look, but it didn't seem to matter. Obviously, we won't be going back. read more

We went there last Friday night to celebrate our son's birthday. What a disaster! When we were first seated on the outdoor patio, we asked for the heat lamp to be moved. Our waiter said he wouldn't move it because the children at the next table would be cold. Well, my children were sweating and finally a different waiter moved it for us since ours was less than accommodating. We waited over an hour for our main courses during which time no one came over to refill the bread basket, offer drinks, etc. When the meals finally came out, our son's rack of lamb, which had been ordered medium rare, came out RAW! My husband tried to get the attention of our waiter who was having a conversation with another server. He finally nabbed someone who was passing and he took the raw meal back. When our waiter came over several minutes later and we told him the meal had been sent back, I commented, "We waited such a long time, at least they could have cooked it," he didn't even blink. While the food was acceptable, the service on the outside patio was atrocious. If you go there and your server is a tall, thin young man with an Easter European accent, my advice is to leave immediately. I came here about three times with different friends and the experience was okay by the third time. The first time i got a dish with scallops - it was okay. But i remember when i got creme brulee on my second visit and it was so good. The waiters were nice enough and my experiences were okay! Not bad. Came here recently with my family as I work nearby and my father-in-law recommended we try this place out. When we got there everything looked promising. We were greeted and service seemed to be good. Until our food came out. I ordered the filet mignon and it looked pretty good on the plate. Once I dug my knife into it I saw that it was over cooked. I asked for medium but this filet was clearly medium well almost well done and so dry. I called the waiter over to show him that the filet was way overcooked. He told me to cut the middle in which I did and pointed to what little red that was left on the filet and said that was medium. I said really? and then he went away. I was more in shock then angry that he would call this over cooked filet medium but I didn't want to make a scene as I was with my kids and they seemed to be having a good time. Also if I experience anything bad in a restaurant I don't complain I just never go back. Not to sound cocky but I used to be a chef at some of the finest restaurants in NYC so I know my meat. I'm not looking for perfection and they could have handled this differently. It also didn't help that the cook stepped out of the kitchen and kept glancing over at our table. My husband and I went to Locale last night on the recommendation of a friend for our anniversary. We arrived at about 8pm and the place was packed, a good sign I thought. We waited at the bar about ten minutes for a table. The hostess sat us at a cute table in the corner. Several minutes later we were greeted with menus. We ordered our appetizer and meals. Food came out quickly and was delicious. Things went downhill from there. I had a steak, my husband pasta. I ended up cutting my steak with a butter knife and my husband ate half his pasta without cheese because our waiter was basically ignoring us. I managed to flag him down to get cheese for my husband but after that we didn't see him again. Our drinks were empty along with our plates which sat on the table for about 15 minutes before another waiter came over and cleared them. The same waiter then came over with dessert menus, but my husband and I were over the lack of service so we asked for the check. After dinner we went back to the bar. The bartender, Jose, asked how dinner was and was very apologetic when we explained what happened. He went so far as to order us dessert on the house while we had a few drinks. If it wasn't for Jose or the quality of the food, I wouldn't have given this restaurant three stars. If I do go back to Locale, I'll be sure to order dinner at the bar, at least I know Jose will take care of us. read more

A few nights ago me and my friends went to eat at Locale. I was very pleased with their delicious wine & salmon. For desert, I had their chocolate lava cake which was also extremely tasty. Our waiter was very friendly and brought the food and desert out very quickly. Not only is the inside of the restaurant beautiful, but the patio, which seats additional customers, is surrounded by gorgeous plants & flowers. Me and my friends plan on going again - very soon. The prices are affordable, the staff was helpful and the food is delicious. read more

Went to this amazing place on Friday for a date night with my husband and we were not disappointed! We were greeted like family and shown to an outside table which was so romantic with the waterfall . Our waiter came over to welcome us and take our drink order immediately and hot bread with 2 yummy dipping options followed soon after. We ordered the Clams Oreganata appetizer which was hot and full of flavor. My husband had the Scallops as his entree and said they were some of the best he has ever had. I had the Mushroom Risotto and asked them to add shrimp to it and they had no problem with my request and the dish was amazing!! The staff was so friendly and fun and we can not wait to go back!!! read more

I was with a group of 10 women who came in last week. According to their website, they have a prix-fixe menu that was going on at the time of our reservation. When we arrived, they brought to our attention the fact that we could not participate because it was only for groups of 7 or less. It does not say so anywhere on the website, though we've been told ADAMANTLY that it's there. It's not. Regardless, we all ordered appetizers because the menu did state "split appetizers will be charged $1" which frankly is ridiculous. We then had 9 of the diners receive their dinner with one not. There was no initial mention of the meal missing until the waiter came up to the table after our engaging. His response was that it was, "on its way". It took about 30 minutes for the dish to arrive to our table, at which point the other diners were either done, or those who chose to wait to eat with the one waiting were left with cold dishes. Not a single person working that evening apologized for the missing meal, the delay of the meal, or any inconvenience it thus caused. When it was time for dessert, one of the women ordered chamomile tea, and was served a pot of what can only be described as "rancid weeds". It tasted and smelled like dish water and was completely unpalatable. The menu does state that it includes a tip for groups of 6 or more- something that did not appear on our bill at the end of the evening. We have tried to contact a manager about all this, but have left messages and phone numbers until we finally reached "Vinny" this evening. When made aware of our unfortunate evening, his only response was to ask for him and he will help is the next time we come in. We will not be returning to this establishment and I understand that this does not bode for much, however people should be made aware of the unprofessional nature of Locale. It's a shame as well- the food (that was hot and served on time) was delicious. read more

Would not come back. Dissapointed with a few things. The biggest thing was the service. The waiter we had was awful. He was unfriendly, slow to bring food, and neglected to refill our water, bring us bread, or ask if we wanted alcoholic drink refills. He offered a "free dessert" when we complained but failed to really apologize or even say goodbye. He was noticably friendly to other tables. The second issue was the run down decor. I am not a snob but I sat outside and every table had different chairs. It was not an intentional look either. The chair cushions were cheap and extremely beat up. I was wearing a dress and barely wanted to sit down. Lastly I also felt that the portions were very small based on the price. I had a salad and salmon. Both dishes were good but the salmon came with a mushy vegetable side dish. The salad was one of the smallest I have ever had. Overall was so excited for this place but would not reccomend. read more

i would have given Locale a 4 star review but we were 3 couples who were disenchanted with the restaurant & the manager at the end of our meal. We asked the waiter if they had biscotti for dessert, when we had placed our dessert order. He said they did. We placed an order for biscotti along with other desserts. When the bill arrived we were very surprised to see a charge for the biscotti as it wasn't on the menu & and we were not told there was a charge. We have never seen a charge for biscotti in other popular restaurants like Grissini in Englewood or Nicola in Manhattan, as well as other fine dining restaurants. When we questioned the waiter,about the charge, he said it was on the menu; it was not; but then when we showed him, it wasn't on the menu, he told us, "it's on the computer!" We saw the manager on our way out & we told him we were not happy being charged, especially because it was not on the menu. He told us, "you ordered it, you have to pay for it just as he has to when he buys it." This was not good customer relations especially for a local restaurant. We would not have felt as bad, if it was on the menu, or had the waiter said,"yes we have it, and how much the charge would be." read more

Ordered the Kobe Burger with Sweet Potato fries for $15.00... By far the most overpriced item I have ever ordered anywhere. Thought I would see this gorgeous, large burger come out instead I get a burger that came on a Walmart Hamburger Bun with plain thick fries that you can get at any cheap diner in NJ. Didn't bother to tell me they didn't have sweet potato fries and I didn't bother to eat them. The beef and cheese were actually very tasty but it didn't even fit the bun and I was finished in a few bites. The bun also crumbled a part with each bite. A BIG DISSAPOINTMENT-i had made reservations for Saturday Night June 6th at the outside garden for an 8PM reservation for 4 people. I was told we would have a wait of approximately 15 minutes. We sat at an outside area for drinks and after 20 min I asked for an update and was told they are very busy this evening, and needed another 10 minutes. After 30 minutes of waiting around I asked to see the manager. The wait staff and hostess indicated they would get him. Another 15 minutes went by (45 minutes later) and asked to see the manager 7 different times. He did not bother to show his face, the wait staff and hostess were rude and outright lied to us. It was like talking to the walls I have never been treated where they just didn't care. I will never go back to a restaurant that is so poorly managed where they obviously overbook and make you wait. I have been to Locale on several other occasions but this was my worst experience that I ever had in any restaurant. if the manager had come out, he could at least have tried to smooth things over and apologize, but his lack of concern and indifference is what made me walk out never to return.......................... read more

Horrible experience at this restaurant from start to finish. We were told to wait inside at the bar and then our table was given away, despite having a reservation. The restaurant owner then yelled at us for standing in the way when we refused to wait at the bar inside anymore for our outdoor table. We had to wait 45 minutes to be seated. It took another 45 minutes for the main courses, and my dish was served 15 minutes before everyone else at the table. They then explained that it was because they have me someone else's order! My food (seafood boulibase) was over cooked, chewy and inedible. We were told that they were going to "take care of us" because of all the inconveniences and when the bill came, they did nothing! They had the nerve to say they compensated us by taking my dish off the bill! The food reviews from others at my table were mediocre at best. I do not know how a restaurant like this can stay in business. We will never go back here again. read more

The dining area is spacious and cozy and a great location for hosting business dinners or special family dinners. The wait staff are always at the ready to serve. My parents recommended this place for my birthday so I decided to try it out. For appetizer we ordered the avocado shrimp salad (which was fresh) and for entrees we ordered the lamb, the whole wheat penne, the striped bass, and seared tuna. I recommend all of them. I'm always wary of the service and food quality when I find out that the italian restaurant is not owned or staffed with italians (the establishment is run by Albanians). But if the ethnic make up of the employees or the kitchen staff is not an issue for you, I recommend this place. With four glasses of Champagne, the one appetizer and the above four entrees, our bill came out to $164. I am pretty sure there are more top of the line, authentic italian restaurants in the north jersey area, but if you happen to be in Closter and you don't know where to take your family for a nice holiday dinner, look no further. read more

me and my husband visited locale 5 month ago it was our first time . after we heard that is one of the best italian restaurants in the area. the food was so good that i was mildly offended that i had gone my whole life without ever having such an experience. the presentation was amazing. we have few items on the menu that we always love ( goat cheese gnocchi, and rack of lamb). we have since returned about 4 times, at least once every month. the staff remember our names and each experience is just as good as the last one but this time was the best yet. the tasting menu concept may not appel to non-foodies, but we love it. the staff does try to accommodate our desires. I also wanted to thank locale for taking special care with my husband who has garlic allergies. IT NEVER DISAPPOINTS BUON APPETITO read more

We have been to Locale several times and never experienced a problem. Last night we ate there and it was not a pleasant experience from start to finish. Our service was horrendous and our waiter did not seem to take an interest in our table. Our appetizers and entrees took forever to be served and when the food finally came out, the pork chops were not cooked the way they were ordered. I had to send them back, much to the chagrin of the waiter. I then chose a rib-eye steak since I was told that it would take less time to cook. It finally came long after everyone had finished eating. We never had water refilled at our table and almost had to "beg" for a refill of water. When we spoke to the matrie'd he never apologized and "brushed us off"- he was not very nice. To top off the evening, I was charged more for my re-ordered piece of rib-eye steak than I should have been charged for my original pork chops. This is unacceptable. we have been at this restaurant 3 different times and made sure we ordered different dishes each time and very happy with all our choices, the food is exellent, service is great and love the atmosphere, this is the very best. read more
