After dinner at Capital Club 16, my friend and I walked over to see if they had any gluten free options for my birthday dessert. Voila! Several options including most of the gorgeous macarons! We shared the coconut frangipane and a I had a birthday cake macaron. Scrumptious!!!! Well, it is an old French recipe, like 1860's old. The easiest way to describe it is to think about a Croissant. it's made in a similar way. With a Croissant you fold a sheet of butter into your dough and then you keep folding it, and rolling it out, making buttery layers in your dough, but for the Kouign-amann, it is a sheet of butter/sugar mixture, so that when the pastry bakes, it is folds of caramel-y, sugary goodness and it is A-MA-ZING. (pronounced Queen Amann) Do not miss this spectacular treat.....I predict it will be bigger than the Cronut! Canneles-Crunchy outside with a buttery, almost custardy delicious inside. Larry meets Escazu: Probably the richest treat I had there, but it was still light and mouse-y Coffee Eclair: Lightly sweet, delicate, coffee eclairy goodness. So that is most of what we tried there.....and if i can convience hubbie to go for a 4th week in a row.......lol But seriously, if you're looking for something unique, different, delicious and beautiful, and something worth going downtown for, THIS is your place. Lucettegrace is an impressive addition to the downtown Raleigh restaurant scene from former Umstead/Herons chef Daniel Benjamin, whose skills as a master pâtissier have been generating good foodie buzz for many years. These are some world class goods here, seriously high end restaurant desserts made accessible to anyone in downtown Raleigh who wants to stop in for a bite. Chef Daniel's ingredients as well as his skill and creativity are top notch, and you can't really go wrong with anything in the shop. Try closing your eyes, turning around three times and pointing to something at random in the pastry case. It simplifies the painful process of decision making when you want ALL THE THINGS because every single one of the magnificent edible jewels on display looks transcendentally delicious. Offerings on opening day included some impressively polished looking and complex pastries such as a chocolate tart with locally made Escazu chocolate, apricot gelee and vanilla cream in a meltingly tender short crust. The macaroons (three flavors today; pumpkin-passion, salted caramel and vanilla chestnut) are impeccable, and his signature cookie with sour cherry is addictively delicious. On the savory end, a bacon-Parrano Danish was impressively tasty, and there were a few other delectable-looking offerings like the Dixie Cannonball and BBQ Breakfast Cake. Larry's Beans will be brewing up the coffee to go with this amazing spread. It is worth noting that this isn't a place you can expect to grab cookies and coffee for 99 cents; his prices are commensurate with his top quality ingredients, with cookies starting at $2,25 - $2,50 and most pastries from $4 to $6. Absolutely worth it, and much less than you would spend for the exact same dessert in a high end restaurant. The atmosphere is simple and pleasant, with a limited amount of rustic table seating. The cafe really revolves around the pastry case - as it should; his elegant creations speak for themselves - and the open-window kitchen where you can watch the chef hard at work. Lucettegrace might be my biggest surprise of 2014. I knew about the chef leaving the Umstead Hotel, but I had no idea they would open so quickly in full force. Inside, the shop is modern and light. Grays, dark and light woods, stone - all accented with the yellow bar stools, aprons, and to-go boxes. Behind the counter, there's a lot of activity with fresh baked goods constantly rotating. It's a very nice, and the only complaint I understand is that the style echoes a lot of the newer restaurants that have opened up. After enjoying a light lunch at Capital Club 16 around the corner, I stopped by Lucettegrace with some coworkers. The steps lead you right to the pastry counter and case, and you're faced with a tough decision. If you're looking for something chocolately like I usually am, you can safely make a quick choice with the salted caramel brownie 2.0, the Escazu chocolate eclair, or a cookie. Choose tall window or bar seating, their large, high-topped community table or one of there cozy small topped, two to four-seater tables. Colors here are brown, yellow gray {not to be confused with black and yellow!} It will be hard to choose from the plethora of fancy pastries and note that if you come later in the afternoon, they'll usually mark-down their breakfast sandwiches/pastries. My only complaint is the central location with high visibility and what looks to be a robust security system. Luccettegrace should consider moving to a dingier strip of Raleigh possibly behind some tall buildings and as far away from the police station as possible. Doing this, in addition to removing all security cameras would add up to significant savings which could be directly passed on to the consumer. I just drove way out of my way at 2:23 to get lunch. They have nothing to offer but a couple of salads. If they cannot provide a reasonable portion of their menu an hour and a half before closing time, they should shorten their hours. The food is great but this is the third time I have driven downtown to get a sandwich and they act like I am unreasonable for expecting a restaurant to have food during their advertised hours. After 2 previously failed attempts, I finally made it in the door at Lucettegrace! The first 2 times I tried, I failed to check their hours (silly me!) and walked up to closed doors. But not this time! I went for an afternoon treat during a stroll around downtown Raleigh and I was not disappointed. Their dessert case was filled with many tempting treats and since I was so indecisive, one of their friendly staff helped me narrow down my choices. I told him I was a chocolate-lover so he suggested the Larry Meets Escazu since it is also their top seller. And it is their top seller for good reason. It was rich, chocolatey, creamy and delicious. It was also the perfect dessert portion. It satisfied my chocolate craving, but it was not too much to where I would get sick from the richness. I highly recommend it. Based off of the other pictures on Yelp, it looks like their desserts rotate because I do not recognize some of the items from when I went. Saying that we had a Grilled Cheese ($8), tuna salad ($8.50), and ice cream sandwich here does not do this place justice. The grilled cheese also had bacon and onion jam in it and it was delicious. The French tuna salad was made with a piece of tuna (no canned tuna here) mixed with tarragon aioli and spinach. Both sandwiches came with a small salad of greens. If you want a huge lunch, this probably isn't your spot. However, if you want lunch that will leave room for their delicious Raspberry Pistachio Macaron ice cream sandwich, then this is your place. One of the cutest cafe/bakery I've been to! It's in a great location and it's nice inside. They serve breakfast and lunch items, and also a wide range of pastries and desserts! I've only been here twice and both times I've had a pretty good experience. I've tried their carrot cake and Tiramisu and both were so tasteful and amazing! Nothing is perfect but Lucettegrace is making a strong run at it. Located in Downtown Raleigh it has an unassuming sign but once inside, you will be amazed by the wide array of pastries. I had the pleasure of dining here for breakfast so I'll comment on my experience with the breakfast menu. There is a lunch menu as well. The inside is an inviting atmosphere and you are welcomed by the helpful staff dressed in yellow aprons. They have ample and various seating (bar seating and table seating) with the table tops I refinished/restored hardwood. The exposed brick wall gives the place a warm touch of home. We ordered a hot sipping caramel and a Lucettegrace iced coffee (coffee with 2 shots of espresso sweetened with condensed milk shaken with ice). The iced coffee is one of the best I've ever tasted if not the best! We also got 2 breakfast pastries: Dixie Cannonball and BBQ+pimento cheese pastry. As much as I desired to give this amazing place five stars I just could not. One may ask was there any problems and I would say not at all. So I eagerly looked for at least one flaw but could not find any with the exception oft own. This five stars it is. So why four verses five? The service was amazing and quite informative about their product and the display case was pretty cool looking. However I simply wanted more. Perhaps the flaw is on myself due to the time I arrived. The case just was limited in variety. Had there been more variety my rating would certainly be greater. When one seeks out a bakery they enjoy all the fancy pastries but they expect some of the simple ones also. This is not supposed to be the case here because they are simply not a bakery, rather they are a patisserie. At a patisserie one would expect to find all the amazing goodness of Luttecagrace. From the 14k gold graced cake shimmering with chocolate ganache to the amazingly made macaroons no flaw was found in taste. My effort to find out everything good just kept getting better they had a kitchen visible to their guests to which I found to be quite clean. From the tables to the floors it was spotless. Not only material items but the staff was well groomed. Another thing that put me in awe was no off brand items were to be found only top of the line product went in the recipes. Next I journeyed to the rest rooms to find them well stocked and very clean. Whomever owns this patisserie takes great pride in maintaining a clean and desirable establishment. Industrial-chic in design, with Edison bulbs and stools around high-tops plus a few heavy wood tables with actual seats, it was with items plated per our requests that dishes were carried to one of the later and able to watch the bakers work through a glass window as we indulged it seemed as though the large display up front was only a fraction of the team's plan for the day - brass canele molds, items appearing to be sheet cakes, and several other semi-constructed desserts being created before our eyes. Beginning first with savories, incidentally 2/3 of the items served warm, it can only be said that those interested in South's culinary traditions are likely to be shocked while at the same time amused; the BBQ Breakfast Cake a dense cornmeal muffin packed with everything good about Carolina 'cue and pimento cheese while the Dixie Cannonball harkened the technique of the egg centered chive biscuit at Craftsman + Wolves with warm sausage gravy turning the buttermilk shell into more delicious mess with each and every bite. Largely underwhelmed by a Kouign Amann that was oversalted and flaccid it was with a second cup of Larry's excellent coffee clearing the palate that the program got back on track and with a double baked shell that liberated boozy pureed pie filling upon shattering to the tooth I instantly wished we'd have visited Lucettegrace earlier in the week - a thought furthered by the perfect puff of choux surrounding coconut cream and milk chocolate, as well as by the sweet meets salty nut tart and aromatic cylinder of cake amidst pudding that made me wonder why I'd not previously associated the spices of chai with carrot cake, nor why others had not tried cranberry where raisins have for so long stood. read more

I've been a lot of places in my (relatively) short life and tried ALOT of good food over the years... Places like Lucettegrace and making me rank Raleigh as one of my all-time favorite foodie cities ever. I won't lie, it does pain me to pay $5 on something that will only last a few bites, but when i'm all done I definitely find it worth it. A lot of people tell me that a good way to judge a bakery or patisserie is by their macaroons, so that will definitely be my next treat to try! So far what i've tried has been top-notch. The girl at the counter was also super nice and patient with me while I took my time to figure out what I wanted! The space is very clean and modern, with an industrial feel to it. It's not really made to sit and spend hours getting work done, but instead to grab dessert with friends after dinner or a treat after working downtown. Despite being metal the chairs are surprisingly comfy (and a cool shade of yellow) and there are plenty of tables for when they are busy. The counter area is well lit, displaying all the treats, as well as well stocked for you to top off your coffee with cream/sugar/etc. Also, random note. Their plates are very cool. Dunno why that caught my eye in particular but I want them for my house! All in all I will definitely be back! I stopped in on Wednesday after seeing they were closing early today. The website had beautiful photos which wet my appetite. After arriving there was a line of people blocking the counter. I managed to browse through the people to see a rather picked over selection of items. Apparently by 130pm the good stuff was gone, as the selection looked rather picked over, and not as nice as the website photos. There were a number of cookies and baked goods available. I decided to skip the line and the wait until another day. I do wish the hours were a little better. My work schedule generally rules out M-F. Edit: Stopped in and grabbed a couple of items. I had been wanting to try this place because it had been getting some good press lately. I was in town for hopscotch, and this place was pretty close to city plaza and kings, where I was headed to see some shoegazey bands play. Bonus: the sandwich board out front promised a free drink with the purchase of a pastry or lunch to anyone sporting a hopscotch wristband. You had a choice between drip coffee or aguafresca, which is basically fruity water. I forget everything they flavored their water with. I think it was five different fruits? Orange, lime, lemon, maybe mango? I can't remember, but you could taste the fruit and it was very refreshing on a warm late summer evening. The one pastry that was really calling my name was the salted caramel brownie 2.0. I love sweet and salty desserts more than anything. It looked very elegant because this is a patisserie, mind you, not merely a bakery. The brownie was piped with gooey salted (but not too salty) caramel and topped with a delightfully thin piece of chocolate they say served as a nice contrast to the softer textures of the caramel brownie. I've had some salted caramel desserts that disappoint because they over salt it, but they really got the balance right here. Now let me tell you why I'll be back. They make a cereal. I guess it's kind of granola like because it has oats rolled in maple, if memory serves, but it also has nice chocolate chunks, huge dried raspberries, and the most amazing part-- mini macarons! There's no buttercream, obviously, because then it wouldn't be shelf stable at all. I once bought some macarons at ladurée on Lincoln road on Miami beach and then spent some time trying on clothes at h&m and listen, the lines to try on clothes there or check out are comparable to those at the hottest clubs in Miami. Or maybe Disney world. They were a melty mess by the time I got back to my car and forget about the long drive back home to my parents house in south Miami which is actually not that close to Miami beach. But we're reviewing Lucettegrace here, certainly not Miami fast fashion shops or Parisian macaron franchises. I haven't had a whole macaron from them, but I wouldn't say no to trying one next time I'm in town for a show at Kings. I'll get there early, I don't care if the show doesn't start until 9. I can read a book. I just need to stock up on that cereal, because sprinkle some on your yogurt (or mix it in) and you're in heaven! I like it with noosa blueberry yogurt. It's just really indulgent. Mini macarons in a cereal? Who thinks of that. Thank you for existing. The texture is unmatched-unlike the typical, soggy tiramisus served elsewhere. Also tried something that tastes like a Ferrero Rocher candy on steroids! Fantastic! Most of the creams tastes like butter so there was definitely too much in the mix. I would say that most of the cookies were cooked well but the ones with chocolate cream were over cooked. Don't get me wrong macarons are hard to make (I just started dabbling in making them, which is obviously small batch) but I wish these were better. I've been hearing so much hype about Lucettegrace so I thought I'd try it out - and it certainly lived up to its reputation! I don't eat gluten, but I know that most macaroons tend to be gluten free, so when I heard that macaroons are one of Lucettegrace's specialty, I had to try them out! The particular time we went they had 6 different flavor of macaroons and I believe the cashier helping us said 4 of them were based on Girl Scout cookies. As someone who can no longer eat traditional Girl Scout cookies since they contain gluten, I was thrilled! After asking the cashier about gluten in their macaroons she said all but 2 of those flavor were gluten-free. I had the "Thin Mint" and "Samoa" flavored. Both were excellent and almost melted in my mouth. We sat and at our desserts inside the location. Which was very spacious and the decor what I would describe as minimalistic and trendy. After moving from Los Angeles to Raleigh we've been searching for great food and have not been able to find it as easily as we would have hoped. However, Lucettegrace was well reviewed and the reviews didn't disappoint. Brought my kids and we got croissants, pain au chocolat and Kouign-amann. All of them were awesome. so much more than DELICIOUS!!! I went here for some sweet treats and was absolutely blown away! Friends have told me they also have phenomenal savory items as well (like warm gravy filled biscuit and pimento cheese and bbq sandwich), but I can't comment on those directly. I ordered a 6 dessert sampler, which was a special as part of the Food and Wine Festival. Each piece was unique and packed full of sweet goodness. I can't for the life of me recall the exact names and flavors, but I was a particular fan of one composed of rich chocolate mousse and a layer of something coffee. I am not a coffee drinker, but these folks created this with perfection. The macaroon was the best I had ever had and the mascarpone cheese/lady finger creation complete with a berry on top was delightfully new to me. Can't go wrong with the salted caramel brownie goodness!! Seriously- all 6 items I tried, in addition to my iced chia latte, where incredible. I can't wait to go back!!! read more

I am upping the ante and giving it a 4 now. I went back yesterday and was completely impressed! I bought a pain au chocolate (light, flaky, crispy) and a fig scone (light and flavorful, without the fig making it too sweet....a good balance). I also went ahead and bought the "candybar cake", which was hazelnut and chocolate magic. Real, actual MAGIC. A good consistency with one layer containing some crunch, and the next containing smooth, silky goodness. Service was much friendlier and more helpful this time. Way to win my heart, guys. read more

I'm embarrassed to admit I'm still not quite sure how to pronounce "Lucettegrace", but I know for sure I'll be back. For someone as directionally challenged as me it was difficult to locate the place from my parking deck, but it was definitely worth the challenge! The space was very modern and chic and super bright. The assistants behind the counter were extremely helpful and patient with me and my many questions. I ultimately decided on the BBQ Breakfast Cake with a glass of the House Made Agua Fresca. The BBQ Breakfast Cake (eastern NC bbq, pimento cheese, scallions, buttermilk skillet cornbread) was so delicious! It is difficult to find cornbread that isn't dry but I finally found some!! The breakfast cake's size was about that of a muffin. The cornbread was perfectly moist and the bbq was the perfect savory addition to it. The agua fresca was very refreshing, although a little overbearingly sweet. I had to mix in some of the water to be able to enjoy it. The tables are pretty close together so it did get a little loud and we definitely heard all of our neighbor's conversation. However, it was still a great experience and I'll be back to try more of their sweets! read more

Holy. Wow. Talk about something really special and unique popping up out of nowhere on an unassuming downtown sidestreet. If you're looking for the perfect way to make someone's day (could be your own... no judgement), pick them up a cute little happy-meal-for-grown-ups box of Lucettegrace pastries. The selection here is expertly crafted, meticulously presented, and instills a sense of wonder before you've even taken a bite. And then you do. And that's how this review started. After my first bite of the chocolate/peanut butter/toasted marshmallow/rice crispy treat thing I believe they called a Spoonfull. (Let me clarify, it's more like 10 spoonfuls, and you will eat every one yourself without sharing). The staff is extremely knowledgeable about ingredients and process and will tell you all about both until you can't help but buy one of everything. Apparently they also offer a savory menu with soups and sandwiches, but having started with dessert, I'll have to save those for my review update. While prices may seem a little steep to some on first glance, the expertise, effort, and attention to detail when it comes to the high quality ingredients that go into each dessert make them well worth the price. Bonus points for complimentary WIFI and a full coffee bar. Lucettegrace is the type of place you expect in New York or San Francisco - discovering it for the first time today felt like being a tourist in my own city. So I was in the mood for sweets this morning, the wife & I hit the streets. We decided to try Lucette Grace. Ample seating for the lunch crowd with a few tables for small groups. There were many choices if TRYING to avoid a lot of sugar, which I was UNTIL I saw the sipping caramel. The gentlemen offered a small sample and I gladly accepted then ordered a warmed version with the marshmallows & whipped cream. HELLO SUGAR BUZZ.... It took quick care of my sweet tooth, and probably has a gazillioin calories. The Dixie cannonball was also warmed and to my surprise it was a sausage gravy inside!! Savory, YESS.. to balance out the sugar i just consumed!! (For the win!!) My wife got the blueberry muffin was the right amount sweet. First bite she felt it was corn bread-ish in consistency but felt more muffiny at the end. Coffee was great. This place rocks! My wife and I were in the area and looking for a little bakery/cafe to hang out in and this one came up as new on yelp. We were not disappointed! The place has a really cool vibe with lots of yellow and different types of wood, a minimalist display case of some of the most gorgeous desserts I've ever seen and really nice people who served us. We shared the caramel nut tart and the coconut creme pastry (sorry I can't recall the actual names but I'm posting a pic as well). They were both fantastic! Not overly sweet or heavy and really hit the spot. We had some of Larrys coffee to go with it and thoroughly enjoyed our time!
