I heart Lubys! Okay, it wasn't always this way. But I do now. They've really cleaned this place up. The food is always consistent. Whether or not you think it is "good" is a different discussion. My favorites are their new side/premium salad. Fresh and substantial. Corn & black bean salad, cucumber and tomatoes, feta cheese - delicious. Grilled chicken on the premium - healthy! For non-salads, I like the chicken madeira or any of the baked/fried fishes. Also good. Pork chop? Surprisingly tasty. Sides - love the cabbage. Mac & cheese, winner. Asparagus and fresh green beans, awesome. And of course, dessert. Huge chunks of processed sugar to finish off your meal... what could be better? The only thing preventing a full 5-stars is the price. Like Lawrence said below, it can get pretty pricey. Heck, I had a co-worker roll up a $20 tab... BY HIMSELF. Wish I could rate 0 stars. Had lunch there today with a work colleague and there was customer who had a small child screaming at the top of his lungs and jumping from Booth to Booth. There were 4 Luby's employees that talked to the adult and said the child was so cute and laughed. After getting a migraine and having a horrible dining experience, I asked to speak with the Manager before leaving. After about 10 minutes of waiting for the Manager, Gabe came over and said I'm the Manager. I explained my unpleasant lunch experience and told him that I would like to have my next lunch comped due to the screaming child thus causing a headache and wasting $12 on lunch, The Manager, Gabe, LAUGHED AT ME. I told him this is not one bit funny. He said I can't comp your food - You should have told me about the noise. I told him that I did not have to tell him that 4 Luby's employees saw and HEARD the child screaming and jumping booth to booth. I was so appalled at his laughing at me that I told him never mind; I will not be back to this restaurant after this experience. WORST DINING EXPERINECE. I thought the food was mediocre and the prices were outrageous. I do not plan to go back. I had never been before, so it holds no sentimental value for me. In the mail, I received a coupon for a $6 Lu Ann Platter; I figured that would fill me up, and $6 seemed reasonable for a good meal, so I gave it a shot. The line service-persons were unfriendly and unhelpful (except for one who explained that a certain dish was spinach, when I asked if it might not be collards) and I just sort of made it up as I went down the line. I ended up with a Lu Ann platter (I guess this must be the default) comprising Chopped Steak, mac & cheese, and spinach, with a wheat roll. As I said, the food was mediocre -- not bad, but considering how unhealthy I believe it was, it didn't even taste that good. The roll (wheat! b/c I think about my health!) was GLISTENING with butter. And it was still the worst tasting part of the meal. I guess I didn't have too much against the chopped steak, especially after a staff member offered to bring me condiments, including A1, which was nice of her (that was, in fact, the best part of my experience). I also enjoyed the Christmas music and decorations, and I liked the other customers, all of whom seemed friendly, if a bit lonely (perhaps like myself). $6 for the platter would have been reasonable, but I would not consider it a great deal. Normally it's $7.89, (though there's no way to know this until you get your receipt because there are no listed prices anywhere!!) which I would say is very high for mediocre cafeteria food. I also got an Arnold Palmer when I saw lemonade (which turned out to be pink...) in the soda fountain. The drink was $2.25. The food was far better than expected. All the food looked fresh and delicious. I had the meatloaf with mashed potatoes with tomato gravy and carrots. The dining room was service was outstanding. The tables were clean and service was prompt. I asked for a to go box and she offered a fresh to go drink as well. The counter service was good but the wait to pay was long. The food: just fine. The experience: frustrating. The left hand doesn't seem to know what the right hand is doing at this location. Here's how. 1. Big hand written board on the wall says Manager's Special: King Ranch Chicken - $7.99. Ask for the King Ranch Chicken. Line worker looks confused, goes to the back, comes back and says they are not serving King Ranch Chicken. I get another chicken entree instead, ask if I can get the manager's special price. Cashier raises her voice "I CANNOT HELP YOU." Thankfully, she calls a manager who comes over and overrides her. I point out that the large sign says "King Ranch Chicken" and yet they are not serving King Ranch Chicken. He seems confused by this. 2. We went because of free kids meals on Saturday. Wife asks what all is included with the kids meal. Signage has no information. Line worker doesn't know, takes a guess. Once we get seated we wonder if a drink came with it, had to look it up online to find out that it does. Went back to get a drink, cashier gets on to me saying that was not the drink I was supposed to get. How am I supposed to know? 3. What are the prices of the regular meals? Signage has salad prices, nothing else. Overall, the lack of information leaves the customer here guessing at everything because the staff doesn't know either. That creates frustrating situations when you are then punished for not knowing. The food was decent and we like the free kids meal but we probably won't be back. read more

I really like this Luby's location the service is always top-notch the food is very good. I use the GrubHub app to usually order food and the food is always on time the food is always nice and warm a lot of times with steam still coming off of it the taste of the food is great I really love their roast chicken and the Angus steak in. Take Out Customers and Eating In Customers duel. There is no way that Take Out and Eating In customers can select food items at one time. Especially when Take Out people jump the line and confuse the order of things. Wait Staff behind the counters were unduly stressed, trying to keep up with not only the Eating In customers but also the Take Out customers. This was observed September 7th. At this location, there is a separate place for Take Out orders, but rarely used it seems especially September 7th evening meal. Managers take note, you need to do better than this!!!! read more

THe quality of the food is really starting to dip, the salad smelled like it was never washed, smelled nasty. Powdered ranch dressing was gross, not to mention the lady put a whole bottle on my little salad. Broccoli was HORRIBLE!!! Smelled sour and was slimy. I can smell it just sitting on my plate. First time eating here in about 4 years and it's as good as I remember it. My kids were babies when we were here last and they had a meal there as well and were so happy that the food was so good including the sweet tea. I'm stationed in Hawaii and all they really know is the local Hawaiian food and sushi. It's hard for us to find this style of food there and we would always tell them about how good it is and they weren't so sure until they had it. Kids are the toughest food critics and you guys passed with flying colors. They definitely want to come back and eat there when we visit again. everytime i go to luby's i wonder why i go. i pull into the potholed parking lot and think "why am i here"? i walk into the restaurant, smell the bengay, and think "why am i here"? i look at the menu, realise i'll be paying $11 / person for a luann and a drink and think "why am i here"? i look at the food, see the standard cafeteria fare i can get at golden corral for all you can eat at a cheaper price and think "why am i here"? i walk into the dining room, see the furniture frozen from the early 90s and think... well you get the idea. then i sit down and take a bite of my macaroni and cheese and think "THAT is why i'm here". outside of kraft's familiar blue box this macaroni and cheese is my favorite. it helps that luby's has specials from time to time ($2 for a fried fish filet with tartar sauce). they've added tableside waitress service since the last time i've been. i kinda like it. it'll cost you a couple bucks extra for the tip but not having to get up to refill your drink is nice. the food is consistent here. i wouldn't say this location is the best- i'm partial to the barton creek location, but maybe that's because they used to have a dinner buffet many years ago. i will say one other thing. an overwhelming number of people who eat here are grossly overweight. the food here is NOT healthy food. you could eat the salad.. but who are you fooling. you're not at luby's because their salads are rocking your socks off. read more

"MY LAST" visit at Luby's I tried their over priced Fish Platter w Mac & Cheese and Corn for over $9. Not only was it over priced but immediately after eating I begin to feel sick of the stomach. So after riding around all evening trying to find Luby's we finally arrive. I had the taste for some lemonade but it was flat so i asked for a different beverage i then started to eat my meal while awaiting my drink. As I'm eating my mouth is getting very dry because my meat and potatoes were extremely dry. About 6 minutes later the waitress finally brings me my drink and walks off. Then we need to go containers and she is no where to be found when she finally comes back she asked us if everything was ok she didn't give us the opportunity to answer she walked away. When she finally came back i began to explain to her that my food was dry and that they may want to take it up because others may complain. Can't beat down-home, basic "cookin'"! This Luby's is the best! Big variety of well-prepared and presented food. Larger selection of meats, vegetables and desserts than other Luby's. If you're dining out...be very careful. The employees working the drive through and the carry out counter have a very surly attitude and of the 4 visits..all 4 order were incorrect. After contacting the manager..I think his name is Gabe...he said it was my job to make sure the order was correct. He also said come back in and he would make it good..and when I did...they said...sorry ..we don't do that. Lubys corporate office guest relations doesn't return phone calls, and if you get them on the phone, they hang up. I have a lot of fondness for Luby's growing up as we went here often (though I was more interested in the arcade down the way in the strip center!) All I have to say is after the Fertita brothers took over this chain it's like night and day. The portions are huge and actually robust. I would normally get the chicken fried steak + macaroni and cheese. Now the chicken fried steak is actually more than three millimeters thick and fills me up. If you're expecting gourmet food, you will be disappointed, but this is solid fare for a decent price. read more

Even though the line was long, as expected, it moved along with speed (under 1/2 hour), can't beat that. The baked fish was flaky and yummy and my two big boys were stuffed after the combo entree of chicken fried chicken, mashed potatoes and fried okra. No room for dessert, but they all looked fabulous. This review covers about 30 years of eating at Luby's from Victoria, San Antonio, Austin, and Round Rock. Since I was 10 years old I have been eating here and things have changed but not everything. The menu is a lot different and colorful, but they keep the things that I remember the most, the fried fish and the liver with onions, in fact I still eat the fish the same way I did 30 years ago, I cut small squares out put some of the tartar sauce on each piece. And the strawberry shortcake still looks good every time I see it. Salads are a lot better and the choices of entrees are big, start looking as soon as you walk in. I didn't know the ownership had changed, thank you for not changing the things that keep me coming here. Although the prices have changed, it still feels like I'm ten years old for a second when I'm there, and that goes for any location. Could not believe the price of the red velvet cake. A sliver was $4.99. A sliver. Talked to the manager and he looked at me like I was stupid. Don't mind paying for anything if it's worth it, but the cake was not even 1/4 inch thick and he did not have the authority to change the price. I have been in Austin over 20 years. Luby's was my favorite place to eat even before we moved here. I used to eat lunch at least once a week before retirement. In recent years I ate there a minimum of once a month. The food was always good, consistent and the variety such that it was difficult to choose. In the last few years, the place has changed drastically regardless of location. The first change was the drink carts, but I learned to live with that. Then they did away with the old style steamed pans and went to a more pleasing (at least on first appearance) presentation of the food items. Then they turned every Luby's into a "hospital" looking type of cafeteria seating area. Slowly they eliminated items that were standards for many years.. My favorites such as brown meat loaf, cheese enchiladas, chicken and dumplings, and tapioca (best I have ever eaten anywhere) were all but eliminated (if you get lucky you might catch one of these once in awhile) but the tapioca is long gone. Tonight we went to the Mopac location as it still had the divided seating area which we prefer over the "hospital" style. Wrong, it is now like all the others. I did think the booths were a good idea but nothing else is right about this chain anymore. To be fair the food was still tasty but it was lukewarm when served. The coffee I ordered was not available when you pay; he said the server will bring it. I was half way through the meal before a server could be spotted. At least in the past when they gave you a cup you could get your own. My wife and I took half our food home because it was too cold to eat. To be fair, our server said they were shorthanded. At least with carts or self serve coffee area you could recognize if their was a problem before you were half way through your meal. Basically, Luby's took a good product and tried to fix what wasn't broken. As far as I am concerned they are broken beyond repair. They knew how to do cafeteria food the right way but have forgotten that and these new methods are not working. ok so I go to Luby's on my lunch break. I went through the drive thru. The male that was running the drive thru never came to the intercom to take my order. Six minutes pass so to avoid holding up the line I dirve up to the window. There I noticed the guy working the drive thru doesn't have his head piece on at ALL. How can you take an order without it? So once he noticed I had drove up to the window he put the head piece back on. Well once the manager came to the window I told him that my order was never taken and told him how long I've been waiting. He automatically takes the drivr thru guy's word over mines. I had the absolute worst dining experience here ever. While eating my salad, I bit into a sharp chunk of plastic hiding there. Luckily, I didn't cut my gums open, or break a tooth.
