My first visit to Lu Buffet was today for lunch with a friend who recommended it. The pros: senior lunch prices are a bargain at $14. Lots of choices and unlimited quantities. They have a Pho station, a sushi station, and many rows of buffet selections. A drink (like soda or hot tea) is included. Given the number of options, everyone should find something. Plenty of fruit and salad. Also some quasi American standards like pizza. The mehs: There were some items that were so-so. Vegetables on the hot bar (green beans, broccoli, mushrooms) were pretty tasty. Chicken (General Tso's style was pretty chewy. Sushi was ok but not amazing in terms of flavor. If you are looking for basic Chinese food cravings, with a decent selection of meat and seafood options, this is the place to go. The dinner price is $20 for adults, which is half the price of places like Umi in Rockville. But I would also say, you can taste the difference in quality. Kids eat free with a full paying adult on certain weekdays only. Seating area is spacious. But the buffet is arranged in a square where you can only get food from one side so there ends up being a line just to get food for the open food bars. The laid out food has a limited selection, nothing stands out. That's why bc I recommend the made to order food area: basic sushi, hibachi and soups. The place is clean and the service is adequate not quite friendly, but they check on your drinks without much small talk. If it's busy expect to stack your plates and set them aside. There are a number of Chinese buffets in the area, at different price points. So, I want to be fair and compare like-with-like. I came here yesterday for lunch and, with a senior discount, the tab was under $12. Some of the buffets in the area charge over $24 for lunch, so it's really unfair to compare based on selection. I'm going to view this in relation to the other less-than-$15 for lunch Chinese buffets in the area. This is a very decent buffet for this price point. There's a Mongolian BBQ station, a Pho station, shrimp (for shrimp cocktail) and a variety of decent Chinese entrees. For seafood people, there's a salmon available and a white fish, which was tasty and delicate. I liked in particular the honey chicken and the chicken with broccoli. The pork chop also was prepared well, was not tough and had a good flavor. The hot and sour soup is a bit thick (probably corn starch) for me. They could have upped their game a bit on the sushi, but, again, looking at the price point, it's decent vegetable-based sushi, just not a big variety. And there's plenty of wasabi available. Even the salad bar had good items on it, including pickled beets (not dried out as I've seen on some other salad bars) and a tasty broccoli salad. For dessert, there's fresh fruit (the orange quarters were very juicy and delicious). frozen ice cream cups/sandwiches, and some cakes that looked pretty good. When I was there, there were a number of single diners. Everyone was greeted, served efficiently and I was happy with my plates being removed and my water glass being refilled. The restaurant is clean and comfortable and the men's bathroom was clean. If you come to a place like this, please consider tipping well if you get decent service. read more

I came in expecting the standard discount Asian buffet, with typical American Asian fare, plus the typical pizza, wings, and dessert bar. Service was pretty typical, with the following exceptions; I had to ask several times for the senior discount in order to receive it; the table I was seated at was not cleaned before I was seated; and my empty dishes weren't picked up. The chicken and vegetables dishes at the food bar were refreshed frequently, and the veggies were crisp and fresh. However, the sushi looked like it had been sitting for several hours, and the dressing that they placed on top of many pieces had dried. It looked like they were waiting for people to take the remainder before putting out fresh pieces. The fruit and dessert bar looked acceptable, Unfortunately, I left because I started having some gastric discomfort. This got worse during the day, and I ended up canceling my plans for the evening. I can't say definitively that it was the food from the buffet that caused the distress, but I'm not going to chance it again and return. I'm sure this service varies based on the employee count, and my experience may have been an exception. Still, the whole experience was less than expected. We visited Lu Buffet for a group get-together on a Saturday. Great idea! First you pay at the counter (military and senior discounts!) then grab a plate! We reserved three tables at the back of the "party room" which is just a separate area for big groups. The waitress brought us drinks while we made trip after trip to the buffet. My favorites were the fried shrimp, Mongolian BBQ (pick your ingredients and watch them grilled), clams and clams and clams, and of course dessert (ube steamed buns were on point!). I hadn't been to an Asian buffet since before the pandemic and it's good to see them making a comeback. Once again Lu Buffet does not disappoint! This is a spot to get full. This is my go to for gaithersburg area buffet. The food is warm, filling and delicious every time. The seafood was very impressive on Sunday too. Full blue crab, mussels, shrimp, crawdads, you name it. This place will continue to be a regular spot for me! I was pleasantly surprised that COVID hasn't wiped this restaurant out. They had tasty selections and decent seafood options while keeping the price reasonable. There's also a hibachi grill and pho station but I didn't even get to try them because there were so many other options to choose from. If you do try this place, be cautious when trying the sushi and cold bar. The buffet is quite good. I have a few suggestions: 1) The Pho soup section should include basil. Without basil flavor, it is NOT Pho. 2) The fried noodle is always cut to 1" length or less. This made the noodle look so awful and unappetite (even the waitress agreed, but she was afraid to let the management know). Let's be real: for a $10 lunch buffet or $16 dinner buffet, this is PRETTY GOOD for what you're paying for lol! Definitely don't come here expecting some luxury buffet with amazingly high quality food, but I actually really enjoyed just a few of their options, like their sweet sauce fish and ice cream. They offer quite a large variety of food: sushi, all sorts of carbs like noodles and rice, habachi, kbbq, Vietnamese food, lots of various proteins like your typical orange chicken, honey chicken, broccoli and beef, black peppered beef, and many more. Lots of soup options and dessert options as well. I will say that their sushi has a lot of rice, so I wouldn't really suggest getting this if you wanna eat the most out of what you're paying for. Their cakes and desserts are not really worth it either, but their ice cream, especially the mouse tracks and this crunchy ice cream were good! I feel like if people pay $5 average for a two-scoop ice cream around the DMV area, then paying $10 for lunch for a meal with all you can eat ice cream is an amazing deal if you think of it that way. I don't usually eat buffets often, but if I ever am in the mood for one, I will definitely come back here again for lunch at that price! Decent buffet with a good variety of options! Service was alright, not as attentive when refilling drinks. Price is about $11 for lunch and about $18/19 for weekend dinner. I love the hibachi food here, it's cooked pretty well although the meat is pretty tough. The sushi options are standard, a big variety. The quality you get here isn't perfect or amazing but it's worth the price with how much variety there is. For the cheap prices, it's ok. Food quality is ok. But the fact that they run after you if you don't leave a tip or if it's not enough for them is just disgusting. And with the way they were harassing us for not putting enough tip just left a bitter taste in my mouth. So I've been here 7 times as of this update and I still give it 5 stars. They keep making subtle changes to the menu which ensures the food isn't always exactly the same. For example, they now have grilled chicken during Saturday lunch, the dumplings and BBQ chicken skewers which used to be available during dinner only are now also present for lunch. I have only dined once during the Monday to Thursday span and that was for dinner. They did not have crab legs then so I think crab legs are only offers for Friday to Sunday dinner. The servers have great attitude. As long as you bring something to their attention, they will accommodate you. For example, during one of my visits, I sat with in the dining room behind the hibachi grill for a party of 8. Our plates were kind of forgotten so I informed the servers in a different dining section. The servers promptly came to pick up our plates and frequently checked back for the rest of our visit. They also use minimal to no MSG as I am not very thirsty each time I finish dining. Overall I am still immensely satisfied with the quality and cleanliness of this buffet. read more

My parents tried this place one day and asked if I wanted to come with them the next time. Sushi: Their raw fish looked questionable, it looked fresh but not too appetizing. Its fresh, but dry looking, that probably doesnt make sense, but I wouldnt try their raw fish. I had their cooked sushi and it was pretty good. Hibachi: Standard stir fry, nothing extraordinary, still delicious. Other dishes: Dimsum: They had two types of buns; taro and sweet pork. They also had zhong zi (sticky rice in the shape of a pyramid wrapped in bamboo leaves). And I think some shu mai. Tacos?: I was very surprised to see tacos, and it actually looked appetizing. Dessert: They had a chocolate fondue section, but they only had marshmallows to dip. Maybe bring out some strawberries? Speaking of fruits, I was surprised to see they had cherries! They were super sweet too. The kiwi they had were not ripe, still hard and sour :/. The pineapples werent fully ripe either. Their dessert section was pretty big with various cakes, flan,jello,mouse,pudding, tapioca milk taro sweet milk soup, self serve icecream (had at least 6 flavors that you scoop yourself).
