We find it worthwhile to travel from England to visit this place because we love the character of the place as well as the people who run it and come in. It really represents the neighbourhood, and you can find all kinds of meetings and conversations going on. And no laptop required for admission. Of course we aren't familiar with the food, which makes it an interesting adventure. We would echo the comment about the Belgian waffles, which we love, and we have discovered pound cake and bears' claws, and also clam chowder. Always looking forward to the next visit. read more

I am fully addicted to this place...sometimes I lose sleep thinking about their vegetarian sandwhich (which comes fully loaded with everything you will ever need in one bite) and potato/egg salad. They have a variety of quality loose leaf teas, as well as beer and wine. The best part about this place is everything is made fresh and in house. The service is always genuine, they take their time with the food, but I don't care because it's always worth it. If they were open later I would probably be there everyday! read more

For a place that advertises eggs benedict on their sandwich board, they've got a lot of explaining to do. They were out of muffins. I watched one of the staff run in the door with a package from the corner bodega. Then my order came out and they hadn't even bothered to toast it. Yum. That was worth it for overpriced runny eggs. They have a pretty bad attitude here as well. My partner can't eat gluten and so was explaining to leave off a crepe from her order and got nothing but grief for it. The last time I was in, no one was at the counter long enough for me to whistle to let them know I was there and she gave me attitude for that, too. I guess you're supposed to let them finish the dishes first. Just wait patiently until they're ready to take your order. No wonder they were empty on Mother's Day at brunch time. read more

I love L's. It's a coffee shop in my neighborhood where I can go to get some writing done, which is pretty much what I do at coffee shops. It has a neighborhoody, family-owned feel, which makes me happy to support it. And I would be supporting it 90 or 100% of my coffee shop writing time, except for two things: - The music is often horrible. Bad 90s pop or strange cover versions of songs that weren't too great to begin with. Sometimes it's okay or at least easy to tune out, but often it can be distracting. - It closes too early. This is a trend I've noticed with most coffee shops in the city, but the sugarlump across the street is open an hour later. That hour can make all the difference. So please, L's Caffe, quit playing the craptastic music and stay open an hour later. Then I'll be there every time. read more

I have been going to L's cafe on and off for the past 3 years. For the past year I have been going there every morning. I have become good friends with Lourdes and Gabby and they make me feel like I'm part of their family. When they are busy they have several employees who are also great. When I get there in the morning I am exhausted from my commute but when I see them they give me energy because they are so up beat and friendly. They are a joy. I drop my son off there in the morning and grab coffee for the both of us and he sits there and watches the news and drinks his coffee before school. If you have a chance and are in the neighborhood you should stop by and grab a coffee, breakfast or lunch. They have a great menul. My favorite is a BLT on a 9 grain bagel. It is to die for. They spread a chipotle spread on it. Delicious!!! read more

i have no idea why the extra "f" in the name but it makes me like it even more. i love the people that run this place, and i appreciate that it's not super-hipstered out like the spot across the street. i also really dig the art shows that they put on during MAPP. finally, i love the muffins (even though/especially how you can taste how much oil is in them). the only qualm i have is that they're packing so many tables in the small place right now - it makes it look more like a commercial cafe. Definitely one of the nicest cafe's to sit down and work (and I hop around coffee houses almost every day to find a good spot to sit and work). The lighting is a bit on the dim side, but the music playing in the background is really relaxing... and the furniture is super cute. It has never gotten super crowded, so I can always find a place to sit down. The workers and the owner(?) are also sweet and cheerful. The pastries are pretty awesome to have while sipping some coffee. Definitely one of my favorite coffee joints in SF (beats the heck out of the one near my old home in Nob Hill, which didn't have any ambiance, outlets, or reasonable weekend hours). read more

This little hole in the wall is a true gem inside with local art and friendly service. The evenings are great at L's too - there is bellydancing every month, usually on Fridays! I love this place and come by pretty regularly on the weekends. The bagels are the highlight - probably the second best I've found in the bay area behind Beauty Bagels in Oakland. The people who run the store are all kind and charming. Although the coffee is not amazing, they do give you a lot of it at pretty low prices. They've got my stamp of approval. read more

Suguarlump used to be my go-to cafe for studying at at night, but ever since they introduced a dinner menu, I now find it loud and way too crowded to get anything done. I recently ventured into L's across the street and was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere was comfortable and relaxed and the people who work there couldn't be nicer. After ordering a glass of wine and setting up my computer, the owner brought me out a free appetizer just to nibble on. I've come back during dinner hours and found the salads to be deliciously fresh and huge. Great place to hang out or meet a friend. read more

Well, it might just be a bad day for everyone so I try to be as fair as possible. Yesterday we were on our way to south bay to watch NFC championships game, and realized we need something to eat before the game starts. I quickly opened yelp mobile and selected L's cafe. We got there around 2:20PM, and given the fact it's a game day, it wasn't busy. I placed our order for sandwiches & drinks @ 2:29PM. Got the coffee & juice immediately, but the sandwiches took forever. I know, it might had been simply a bad day, but waiting 30 minutes for 2 simple sandwiches, on a normal & non-busy day, is unacceptable to me. We canceled our order at 2:59PM and headed out. Here's my overall PAST (Price/Ambiance/Service/Timing) ranking on a 1-5 basis, considering the food quality should be decent/good. P: 4/5 - very decent price. A: 3/5 - Ambiance was OK. Place was overall clean S: 1/5 - Service: I checked twice whether they have forgotten our food. T: 0/5 - Timing was horrible. Overall: 2/5. I've not been here before, but it takes me a long time to reconsider this place. To me the first experience matters a lot. read more

Came here with friends, and for coffee runs when I worked down the street. I have so many fond memories of this place I used to meet with my creative writing group from SF State. I heart the chai mocha latte with a Mexican chocolate chip cookie. Brought some of my family here when they came up to visit and they enjoyed the place as well. I actually do not review on yelp, but had such an unsafe experience I wanted to review to warn others. I lived above L's for 2 years and always came down for amazing egg and cheese bagels and yummy lattes. I have always loved the place and the workers have been very friendly. I would consider myself a regular. Recently while with a group of friends studying, we were assaulted by another customer and the employees did nothing to protect us or deescalate the situation. The customer was offended by our "obvious" gayness and began verbally threatening us. He is enough of a regular customer that the business did not want to tell him to quite down, even though other customers left due to the 45 min. long verbal assault. We where physically threatened and the police where called. I consider this to be an assault on us because we are trans/gay. I want to let others know that this business may not be a safe place to go if you are gay/trans because the employees did not help us or even ask the customer to quiet down- he should have been asked to leave. Since this man is such a regular customer, I worry that other members of the queer community may run into him at this business. Please be cautious! read more

I love L's. The food is wonderful and the people are super friendly. I wish more people went there. The only thing I would like to see changes is the 80's music which is constantly playing. I'd love to come in and sit for awhle to study, drink coffee etc., but I can't because the music is so distracting. I grew up in the eighties and know the words to every song that is played, so I can't concentrate at all! If you're not going to study or get work done, or didn't grow up in the 80's I suppose the music doesn't make an ounce of difference. Other than that, long live L's and death to sugarlump! read more

Just happened to bump into this place while walking around the neighborhood because it looked so inviting from the outside. The soft lighting inside was what attracted me to go inside and I wasn't disappointed. Very homey so I decided to get a bagel which was yummy. This is a lovely, homey place. The ladies behind the counter are incredibly friendly and hospitable. I've noted some negative comments about the layout, but I think it's a charming interior. I've lived a few blocks away for 20 years and appreciate that this place attracts the diversity of the neighborhood, rather than a single generational group. The food and drink are honest and honestly priced. Great place to hang out for a while to work, watch the street, have a nosh. This place is around the corner from my house and I come here whenever I need a break from working/studying at home. OK, I admit it-- the coffee is really not that good, but I don't really mind because this is such a great place to study and the sisters who run it are so so so frickin' nice. They always ask me how I am and they show me the new stuff that they've decided to carry and.or make. And they're really trying to appeal to everyone-- there's empanadas made by local women, vegan cookies from Santa Cruz, mexican wedding cookies, etc. Furthermore, my 70 plus year old neighbor hangs out here and there's a lending library for books (and they've got some OK ones too!). read more

My husband and I had a very delicious brunch there this morning. The eggs Benedict with spinach and avocado. I had mine with smoked salmon. Everything was delicious the vanilla late the country potatoes and the fruit all organic absolutely delish. Don't let the neighborhood fool you.
