I had come here for happy hour and late night drinks multiple times before, but wanted to wait until I tried the food to write a review. Lucky for me and other Yelpers, my friend ordered basically everything on the menu for our group last night.
Chips & Guac - skip: $10 is very steep for a plate of chips and a small bowl of guacamole! I felt like the furikake didn't add much flavor to an otherwise plain guac.
Roasted mushrooms - get: a standout among the starters. It was the perfect hit of savoriness, not too oiley, and a great texture.
Shrimp tiradito tostada - get: beautifully plated and dressed
Corn & sweet potato fritters - get: majority of our group's favorite. The sweetness of the corn and sweet potatoes was a refreshing break in the saltiness of other dishes.
Crispy rolled tacos - absolutely skip: I'm not cheap, but $12 for potato tacos without protein is a huge disappointment. The slaw is delicious, I will grant you, and I think would be great as a salad/side on its own.
Grilled octopus - get: I had been lusting after this, and it did not disappoint. Octopus is a tricky thing to cook, and it's done perfectly here, tender with still enough of a bite, a tentacle beautifully draped over an addicting soubise. The chipotle arancini is a nice touch, and again, would work well as a standalone starter dish on its own.
Churros - get if you like mezcal: I'm not a big fan of chocolate, but I agreed with the rest of the party that the churros smelled and looked too good to pass up. We all started sniffing around as soon as an order came to a nearby table. The churros themselves are light and perfect, but the dip 100% tasted like mezcal - and didn't pleasantly add to the dessert for me.
Food aside, service is the best here, every time I have come. Food comes out pretty quickly, but still well-paced, and they're always asking and prompt with anything you might need. The inside has great music but at a level where you can still have a conversation. It's great vibes without being too rowdy. If you want to bring your dog or sit outside, the heaters work and they're no less attentive than if you sit inside. The little indie dork in me absolutely loves that they tie playlists to their cocktails. I literally said "I wonder if 'Deadbeat Summer' is based on the Neon Indian song, I would die if so." Lo and behold. A Selena tribute cocktail? Amazing. I get that they are a cocktail-driven bar, but I do wish they had a better selection of beer when you kind of want a break or to be able to hang for a long time - especially on Sundays when they do botanas or a snack with every drink order. Your bill adds up a little too quickly here and you may still be hungry and only barely tipsy. Low Bar is great as a starting place before a real dinner, happy hour, or for nightcaps. read more
