This review is not for Orbit Salon itself (as it's just a platform where independent hairdressers work), but stylist Carly (Carly Isbell, Carly Elizabeth) and let me tell you, this is definitely in my top 5 worst hair experiences. I got a hair cut deep conditioning groupon. I'm Caucasian with long, straight, thick hair. I wanted delicate layers with keeping most of my length. I even took 2 pictures to express exactly what I am looking for and stressing "delicate and light layers". What I ended up getting was at least good 5" shorter hair, that look like two separate and uneven rows. I went to another stylist for help as I got desperate, and the comment he passed was: "it looks messy, like regrowth of old layer hair cut". The whole process started by cutting my hair dry which did right from the start flash few red flags, but who wouldn't trust a stylist, crazy right???!!! Next step was wash, 1x shampoo, no head massage, rinse and 5min conditioner. After rinsing conditioner, to my surprise instead of a hair cut, we are blowing my hair dry. I was really puzzled and said that "this was the fastest hair cut ever", after which my stylist started to add layers. I felt she was cutting it just from one side- back. Normally every other hairdresser I went, would take small strands of hair, and go, strand by strand up and down, any angle, all over my head. With Carly, it was exactly opposite, chunks of hair, 1-2 directions from back side only. When we were done, I got really curious, I asked for the mirror and to me, it looks like a disaster. Carly said that it's because I don't stand straight, and I am lifting my arm holding the mirror, so we took pictures that I am attaching, trying to stand as straight as I can. It still didn't look good to me, but Carly said it's cause of the light in the salon and it looks great to her, very even cut. At that point I was freaked up and I wanted her to correct it. Guess what, she didn't have time as I was just someone she squeezed between a "regular paid customer that has a bleach and color and she needs to attend her as it's longer process and ready for next step". I said I'll wait. 5 min later she comes and says, she can fix it. 3min into correction cut, she's done and it looks great to her, yet still not to me, but you can judge for yourself. If it looks good to you, and if it's a hair cut you always wanted, by all means, go for it. I even allow Carly to use my pictures on her professional page since it looks great to her, may be it will help grow her business more, may be it's just me unreasonable with my own subjective opinion and demands, who knows... Anyhow the way I see it, I left the salon, with shorter, unstyled hair, softer in texture but not raving. Overall, if you want to feel miserable and be treated as a third class sub-groupon-customer with awkward haircut, and don't need pampered experience just a nice chit-chat, express service and shorter hair, go to Carly! read more

Erin at Orbit rocks! I went to the East Austin salon for the first time last Saturday armed with a "free haircut" gift card (thanks to Lorena O., who won it for me at the last elite event) and really had no expectations except that Erin was supposed to be an expert with long hair. I was 30 minutes early, but waited just 10 minutes before Erin came to get me. Half asleep from less-than-stellar rest all week, I sat in her chair and was secretly hoping she wouldn't be too chatty. Lo and behold, she apologized for not being in a chatty mood because she was tired from working one of her three jobs the night before. Yes! Pointing out the obvious, I told her I needed highlights and a trim. She whipped out the color-swatch book, and pointed to the two colors that would help magically blend my half-natural, half-grown-out-highlighted mess. While foiling my hair, we did talk a little about her other jobs (bartender and freelance movie makeup artist) and our shared love of all things glitter. For the most part, though, I stared at the magazine article in my lap. (Cameron Diaz, get over your Prius-driving self.) After sitting under a crazy-looking dryer to process (think memory-erasing machine from Total Recall), Nick came to get me for a wash and AMAZING scalp massage (huge drool factor, needed an extra towel). Then back to Erin for my cut, which amounted to about an inch and a half off the straw ends I've been passing as hair. Added bonus: as she was blow-drying my hair, she did this crazy-ass thing with her fingers to volumize (word?) my roots. It amounted to a good 5-minute head scratching (more drool). I walked out about two hours later with my goodie bag (including what else? Orbit gum) a great cut and color all ready to Pachanga my ass off. I hate to give a bad review, but if Yelp is going to work well, I guess we have to be honest. So here goes: After reading the wonderful reviews, I made an appointment with Sunny for a haircut and highlights. What followed was a series of unfortunate events - and my failure to stop the events from progressing at numerous points during what turned into a 6 hour coloring fiasco. My first mistake was letting myself get talked into color when I really just wanted highlights and a haircut. My second mistake was not being more concerned when it took Sunny 35 minutes to mix my color. My third mistake was not calling "uncle" when, three hours into a two hour appointment, Sunny was still weaving highlights into my hair. My fourth mistake was not taking the opportunity to bail on the whole process when another customer showed up unexpectedly for what turned out to be a double-booked appointment. After the marathon highlight weaving and coloring session, I knew it was not going to be worth it when I asked the person who was washing out the product how the color was looking and she said, "It's hard to tell." Uh huh. They can always tell. And she could tell. She just didn't want to tell me my hair was orange. To cut to the chase, after highlights, coloring, wash out, blow-out, toner, wash out again, blow out again, I spent 6 hours in the salon and walked out with a pumpkin head and still no haircut. Perfect for Halloween. With that said, in the 6 hours I spent getting my hair colored I did see a lot of other great cuts and styles get done. They are doing something really right at Orbit. So, gauging from my observations and the other reviews, I'm an outlier and things generally go really well at Orbit, so take my experience for what little it's worth as you decide whether or not to give Orbit a try. read more

I have been going to the same stylist for more years than I can remember, and am madly in love with him. However, a series of events got me off my usual schedule with him and when I finally realized I desperately needed a cut and called to make an appointment, it was going to be five weeks before I could get back in his chair. That was just not going to work; I was already feeling like I could grace the cover of Hippies Gone Wild Magazine with my lanky locks. Then I remembered that I had a free haircut coupon from Orbit that I'd received at a Yelp event. I called to make an appointment, and the owner of Orbit, Christian, set me up with an appointment with Jessica on short notice. I ended up chatting with Christian on the phone for a few minutes, and he absolutely could not have been nicer; as the face of Orbit, he is doing everything right. As for my hair, I don't think the cut or the experience quite stacked up to my usual stylist at my usual salon. My usual stylist is a perfectionist and an artist who takes great pains to make sure every cut is perfect, and while I did like the cut I got at Orbit, I didn't quite get that same vibe from the finished product. HOWEVER, and I do think this is important, the usual price for a cut with Jessica is less than half what my normal stylist charges, so I'm not sure the comparison is really fair. Were I not already hopelessly spoiled by my current stylist, I'd seriously consider making Orbit my salon. Very reasonable pricing, good cuts, free bang trims, and stellar customer service (they gave me a goodie bag with a coupon, a pack of Orbit gum, some hair care samples, some magnets, and a sweet note on my way out, and I got a call a few weeks later from somebody following up to make sure I'd had a good experience). I didn't stop in for a naked body sugaring (though I'll admit that it makes for an entertaining read): I did instead pop in for a styling on a day when I was mostly faced with running around town like Ray Charles on a firedrill. As one might imagine, this left me a little harried when I walked in, but those concerns ultimately dissipated. There are a number of things that are familiar about this salon and several that are different than what I was used to: first off, and pretty helpful. You fill out a form here upon entry that details any hair foibles your stylist might need to know (any weird growth patterns, news of your crazy hair frying experiment, that kinda thing), and once you're called in, your stylist goes through that checklist and queries you about what you'd like to do. Then it's the run through the washing, the scalp massage (all good), the conditioning all that tragedy out of your mop and then onto the cut. Stylists are by definition pretty regular conversationalists, and that happens here too. Worth noting. And in the end? I walked with a cut I was happy with: as a guy, it's worth mentioning that it was a little more than I usually pay for a cut, but not a price point that would give some guys pause, I'm sure. And now, when it's 104 out every day, shorter hair breeds inspiration. read more

I've had two bad experiences at Orbit. 1. I am naturally blond and got my hair dyed a dark red. I followed all the instructions and was blond again in literally less than a week. She did the job again, and then expected full payment AGAIN. I complained and she got very angry and reduced it by ten dollars (wow!). It washed out again after two weeks. I decided it was time to try another stylist. 2. I found another girl working there, and things seemed to be looking up. It was never quite what I wanted, but it was okay, I got compliments, and it was not too expensive. However, when I asked for a katie holmes-esque bob, I walked out of the shop literally sobbing. My mom saw me and was silent for a full minute before saying "oh my god..youre the dutch paint boy." (google it, that was me EXACTLY) I used to really like orbit, as a stylist who is no longer there saved my hair after I was dumb enough to let a girl at the Coop I lived in cut my hair. It was six inches shorter than I wanted, but she did what she could and was really nice. I recommended this to my mom and sister, both were sorely disappointed, and believe me I've learned my lesson too!! read more

I was extremely hair cut-phobic and as a result I had five years of growth, and five years of split ends and damage from flat ironing daily. I knew it was time to do something (probably because of the extensive amount of hair I seemed to be losing) but didn't know where to look. It always seems that hairdressers feel like they have a right to do what they want to your hair, rather then give you what you want. I met Amber at a bar through some mutual friends and she mentioned that she was a hairdresser. Throwing caution to the wind, I got her number (after she examined my hair and gasped in horror when hearing my daily styling "techniques") and set up an appointment for a couple days later. I ended up texting her in the morning before my cut telling her I was nervous about doing it-I know I'm pathetic-but she assured me everything was going to be alright. I showed up and was immediately offered something to drink (glass of wine-yes please!) She seemed to really listen to what I told her when I explained that I really didn't want to lose my length and wanted really to just take off the bare minimum. She put me at ease right away and explained everything she was doing and all the products she was using. In the end not only did my hair look amazing, it felt better then it had in years, smelled wonderful, and the way she styled it is something I have been trying to do since but just can't seem to do it the same. I ended up leaving with a couple new products which I use daily now, and a new outlook on hair cuts. I am no longer afraid! I would highly recommend Orbit Salon, namely Amber, SHES AMAZING! My cut wasn't super expensive, around $50, and worth every penny, I go back to her whenever I need a touch up or a bang trim (free) or if I just want to get it styled. After an at-home hair coloring incident left me looking reminiscent of a slightly more refined Carrot-top, I knew I needed to find a reputable stylist for some quick damage control. I stumbled upon Orbit Salon, and was quickly convinced that it would be one of my best options. Hoping to get it fixed quickly, I called on Tuesday and was given an appointment for Thursday with Rodney. Immediately when I walked in I felt welcome: offered coffee or water, plenty of magazines to read, and a cute atmosphere to enjoy. Rodney explained what he thought would be the best course of action to color my hair, and made sure he understood what I was looking for as far as the cut and color. Not only was I nervous about the color, but I decided to do a dramatic length change. I could not have been happier with the results. The color was perfect, with no remains of carrot-top to be found, and the cut was exactly what I was hoping for. I have had cuts done here, color done on numerous occasions and have even been duped by evil ex-girlfriends into taking THEM here to get their hair cut and colored (on my dime of course, bloodsuckers). Out of all of my experience here I have to admit that I absolutely adore this place and everyone who works here. The building itself is one of the coolest things in the world, an old Victorian-ish house turned into a high end salon, it's really cool. I like the fact that their is a lot and always parking, even though it is so close to the University. The staff, everyone from the girl at the counter to the stylists and the owner are all very cool people and very friendly. I can't speak enough kind words about them. Michelle (Mischa) or Jennifer always does my hair, both cut and/or color and I have always been extremely happy with it and very impressed with their work. Jennifer has done cut and color for at least two of the bloodsucking ex-girlfriends as well and it has always turned out amazing. The offer more than just hair services but that is all I have really done here, even though I can't wait to go back and get some other stuff done. They have a good selection of high end salon products that I absolutely love and can't live without. The location is great, the stylists and staff are the best around and the prices are fair for a high end salon experience. I have long, relatively boring hair that stylists are always afraid to go crazy with. I tell a hairstylist to do something different, make me look cool and funky--and instead they put in a few long layers and razor it around my face. I always walk out looking a lot like I did when I went in. UGH! I went to Jessica at Orbit and asked her to PLEASE do something different and funky with my hair. I totally trusted her judgment and I'm so glad I did. My haircut is SO hip and I've had several people ask me where I had it done (that NEVER happened to me before). I purchased a yelp deal ($50 for $75). Apparently, this deal is intended for cut & color services only. If you use this on a cut only ($59-- pretty steep for a so-so salon), you'll lose the difference. I made a stink about it, so they gave me $10 off my next service. Awesome- especially since I dont live in Austin (and I had made this very clear), strike one! My stylist was John. I filled out a questionaire about my hair preferences and what I wanted from a hair cut. Great! Its nice that he took time to review this with me. I asked for classy, conservative, and traditional. I gave him examples of what I wanted and told him that I liked my hair fairly straight. He gave me a retro/hipster cut with lots of volume! I had to ask for it to be flat ironed once he was done- strike two! He recommended not getting too many layers in my hair because with my type of hair the layers would look fairly choppy. I agreed, and I appreciated the tip. Still gave me layers anyway- strike three! Sorry Orbit Salon. Even if I lived in the area, I wouldnt come back. read more

Amanda at Orbit gave me my best hair cut and experience EVER. It started off by walking into their cute salon, which is super homey. She offered me coffee and tea (I had the tea), and we talked for a while about the style I wanted. She understood exactly what I was looking for immediately! The cut began with two shampoos, conditioning, and a really long and wonderful scalp massage. The cut itself took a bit of time, but she was exacting and detail oriented. She walked me through the cut as it was happening and I appreciated hearing the technical knowledge. She styled it beautifully and even let me sample their colorful hair shadows for free. She taught me the technique she was using with the flat iron, and even let me practice! It was ridiculous. I should have listened to Jamie about the guy thing cause despite probably being very good for girls, I can't say this is ideal for guys with short hair. This is especially true if you are looking for a variation on a high and tight (picture Marc Jacobs on the cover of 'Out'). I'm even more frustrated with myself because I am currently reading Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell, and should have looked at the gender of the yelpers who reviewed Orbit before diving in head first. Not that my hair looks terrible or that anything went horrifically wrong, but I like symmetry and my hair is uneven due to an unconventional technique. I went to this salon from the reviews I read here and I am not sorry one bit. I had been looking for a stylist who could do dreadlocks and dreadlock extensions. After a bad experience at another salon I was nervous but really had no reason to be. My new dreads are long and beautiful and I have Liz Shannon to thank for that! I am cursed when it comes to stylists. If I find someone I like, he/she undoubtedly has left the salon by the time I call for my next appointment. This has led to me going many months between haircuts as I pester my friends for recommendations until one day I wake up, look at myself in the mirror, and think, "Dear god, woman, you're giving Sasquatch a run for his money. Get a freakin' haircut already." So take me at my word when I tell you to run, don't walk, over to Rodney at Orbit. The first time I went here was because I won a free haircut at a Yelp event. The stylist I got did a good job, though I thought the short bangs she gave me were a little too hip (anyone who has ever seen my shoes knows I'm not hip. At all. Not even remotely). I decided to go back to her anyway, but of course she was gone when I called. I figured I owed the salon a haircut and said I'd take whoever could fit me in the next day, and they scheduled me with Rodney. I have never had a more thorough haircut in my life. Ever. I bought a Living Social deal for the salon after I noticed their near five-star rating. Rachel did a cut and color for me. She consulted with me for at least fifteen minutes prior to her starting, just to make sure we were on the same page and I'd love what I got. Which I did! The staff was super nice; I was asked whether I wanted anything to drink (coffee, water, or wine) by at least three different people. Afterwards, they pre-appointed me for a free bang trim in three weeks and gave me a little goodie bag. Most of the time when you buy a voucher, you're semi treated as a lower class customer, but not this place. They were super sweet, very personable, and extremely talented. I love Orbit Salon! I especially love Sunny! I've moved around a lot, and every time I move to a new city one of the first things I do is look for someone to cut my hair. I totally hit the jackpot with Sunny when I moved to Austin last August. I have been looking for a stylist who isn't afraid to take risks. It has taken me four years to find someone who is not afraid to give me the haircut I ask for. Mind you, I'm pretty conservative with my hair. But I like to unleash my inner rock star as well, and Sunny knows exactly what I'm asking for as soon as I explain my vision to her. Not only does she not try to talk me out of it (most stylists have recoiled in horror when I tell them I want really short bangs with my long hair), she makes suggestions of things we could try that would work with my hair's texture and the shape of my face. Every time I leave her chair, my hair looks totally hot. Being a newcomer to Austin, Sunny has also been awesome at suggesting things to do in the city and is really easy and fun to talk to. She's a total sweetheart. The atmosphere at Orbit is hip and comfortable, the staff is incredibly friendly and they always have cool music playing. Huge plus. I'm getting married this fall and there's nobody I'd rather have make me look fabulous for my wedding than Sunny at Orbit. Because she most definitely will! read more

This was by far the best hair experience in the history of my hair. Sunny sat down and we had an open dialogue about my needs and what I wanted. She contributed great ideas and was very knowledgeable. Something about her delivery and our rapport made me trust her: I am so glad I did!!! I walked in feeling like a dowdy, beat down grad student and I looked like one too. I walked out feeling empowered and pretty. The first light I stopped at on my way home, a restaurant manager walked out and said "I just wanted to tell you that you are a beautiful woman". I don't think that has ever happened before and I thank Sunny. She spoke about ease of care, body, movement, versitility and "victoria secret hair". Each of these was achieved. Sunny is an Aveda trained expert as well as a warm and quirky woman. She really made my experience fabulous, not only did she give me an excellent cut, but I loved chatting with her. Also, Orbit is fantastic. Its an Austin family owned salon. I ogt to chat with the owner while she was folding towels in the back. They are a great couple and I was glad to support their Austin business. They also gave out new visitor goody bags, free bang trims and referral discounts- a nice touch. I've only been once but the visit was a success. Everything was as I would do it. Good marketing, great cut, and good follow-up marketing. Why do I care about the marketing, I don't know, but I do and there's was good. Maybe I just like being catered to, and so that's what happened. I got the goodie bag as I left as well. First off, on a Saturday, I decided that I was finally going to get my hair cut and started researching Yelp. I decided to call Orbit and told the receptionist that I wanted a hair cut ASAP and she said, how about an hour? Yes! Thank goodness for Will! I got a terrible hair cut at another place a few weeks ago and had been scared to get it cut because I didn't want any more length taken off. I told this to Will and he understood exactly. After he initially cut and dry my hair, he spent another 20 min getting fixing it up, it was perfect. He made me feel like my hair was his masterpiece for the day. About Amanda: Yes to what everyone else said. I have curly hair and I'm difficult and specific about how I want it cut. And I'm kind of lazy an untalented when it comes to styling it. So basically I'm a nightmare, but Amanda did a perfect job. I should mention that I'm growing my hair out and didn't know what to do next, but because I trust my Yelp sisters to know a good stylist, I let Amanda do some things I wasn't altogether sure about. She is the kind of stylist who should be given a little freedom. She knows more about hair than we do. Also I was able to get in on a Tuesday during SXSW even though I called like three days before that for my appointment. And later in the week Amanda was styling hair for an MTV showcase! I chose this salon based on the good reviews. I also chose the salon based on the location. I work downtown and was looking for a place that I can get a wash, haircut and blow-dry on my lunch break. Erin was my stylist. I told her about my not-so-straight-but-not-curly hair and how I wanted a cut and style that would be very low maintenance. I am annoyed by the heat damage I've caused my hair but I'm also tired of wearing it in a pony tail on a daily basis because it looks awful when it dries naturally. Erin has wavy hair and talked me into working with my hair's natural textures. She recommended a few kinds of products and then showed me how to style it. My haircut was great, I received advice and a few tips on how to now style my hair without spending a lot of time and/or damaging it with blow dryers and flat irons. The salon is decorated well - very boutique-ish and it was clean and comfortable. There were plenty of other stylists and happy customers in Orbit when I was there. I was in and out in under an hour and overall my experience was great. They provided me with a new client freebie bag as well as some business cards and client referral discount cards. I've tried a few salons in town, but I think I've found my home at Orbit. My first visit was for an eyebrow wax and boy howdy, Amy knows her stuff! Best shaping I've ever gotten, period. I recently saw Lisa for full hi-lights and a cut. The cut is perfect, the color is awesome. Her scalp massage made me gooey. And when I decided, on the fly, that I wanted to put a pink streak in my hair? She was just as giddy and excited as I was! In fact, she took a few pictures for me. :) I went back recently to have the streak touched up, and while it was a bit pricy for one, single streak, I did get a free blow-out and styling. Orbit has great marketing and great follow-through. I get a call the day before an apointment and a goody bag when leaving. The staff are all happy and helpful and the location couldn't be more awesome. Making appointments are *easy* (call, send email, use their online form or instant message them!). I think one of the best things about Orbit is their free 'touch up' service between cuts. If you just need your cut reshaped a bit or your bangs trimmed, its free.
