I give Orbit five stars but they are based purely on my stylist. My man, Jamon, has been cutting my hair at various establishments around Austin for as long as I can remember. I will follow him anywhere. Jamon is the kind of person that I can sit down and say, "eh - do whatever Jamon. Make it fun," and I can completely trust that he will always do something different and awesome. Though my favorite locale was definitely when he used to cut at Aveda in North Campus, Orbit comes pretty close. It's laid back, hip and trendy, and in a funky old Austin house. They do give you Orbit gum, which I think is cute, and they always have rad music playing. So, five stars for Jamon and thus, five stars for Orbit by default. read more

I've been going to Michelle for my color for YEARS now. She's the longest relationship that I've ever had. Seriously. She knows how my hair works, and she always makes sure that any highlights she does compliment my cut. When I want to do a different shade, she helps me decide what will work best for me. If Michelle ever decided to get out of the hair business, I don't know what I would do. I get asked at least once a week where I get my hair done at. I've usually got a stack of Michelle's cards in my purse to hand out to people who want to see her. The rest of the staff is great, very friendly and always willing to work with your schedule to get you in. I LOVE the fact that you can book an appointment through Instant Messenger. I initially contacted Orbit because I was considering getting extensions. After deciding that I ultimately wanted less hair and not more, I called them and changed my appointment. I talked to Christian on the phone and he was really nice and helpful. He recommended Sunny to me because he said she's good with large manes of hair. Was he ever right! Sunny is adorable and sweet while being totally professional and awesome. While we discussed what to do with my hair I realized we were on the same page. This was so refreshing! During the cut, she kept me apprised of everything she was doing which is always appreciated. The end result looked amazing and it was exactly what I had envisioned! I haven't been able to style it quite as well as Sunny did (and she made it look so easy!) but it looks great even if I don't do much to it. I'll definitely make this my go-to salon. I've been going to the same stylist since 2002. The last time I visited him was a year ago (I love to grow my hair long), come to find out he has not been cutting in ATX for a year now. I grew frantic about a possible new hair experience. I came across Orbit salon on Yelp & decided to give it a shot. I had my cut a couple of weeks ago with Natalie Morgan. The shop was easy to find & super chic. I like that you complete a past hair experience & concerns survey before getting started. She knew exactly how to target each of my concerns & got down to it. Did the wash & then blow dried my hair. First I was weary- she hadn't cut my hair & was already drying it. What was this? She explained it as Dry Cutting which completely makes sense. When your hair is wet & you cut it; its very deceptive on what the final outlook looks like. After my cut, she styled it with full curls & I was ready for my Happy Hour. I love my new cut & makes me wants to toss my hair around like the herbal essence commercials =) Shiny, full, & long. I got a little goody bag which was such a nice treat especially with Obritz gum. Got my nails done here over the summer. Wasn't in the mood for low-cost but possibly nasty germ-ridden results from a budget place. The basic pedicure was totally decent, but they lose a star for not having massage chairs (or even a Brookstone-ish insert pad). The set up is for just 2 stations, so ask before you bring a gaggle of friends. They have paintbrushes on hand and are very careful with smudges. Always appreciated. A bit of a rock and roll atmosphere. The goodie bag at checkout had shampoo samples, a bumper sticker, and yes, Orbit gum. read more

I chose this salon after exhaustive research after just moving to this area. I never ever thought I would find someone who could deal with my hair the way my old stylist in Arizona was able to. I was wrong. After reading all the stellar reviews here on Yelp and then going to their website and reading the team bios, I decided to see Rodney...best decision ever. The entire experience was insanely good. Online appt...it does not get easier than that. The actual location was so easy to find for a newbie to the area. The structure is adorable, the staff just oozing with a welcome and friendly vibe, and you'd be hard pressed to not fall in love with this entire establishment. I got a call a week later checking in to see how my haircut was doing. How cute is that? I'm more adventurous than the average person when it comes to actually getting my hair cut. My philosophy is, it's only hair and it will grow back. So I turn all the control over to the stylist as soon as I find someone I can trust and that's not so easy. That said, I sat down and told Rodney, whatever you want to do, whatever your vision..go for it. He immediately recognized that my hair has a bit of a 'tude and likes the curl effect in the humidity. He played on that as a strength instead of a curse and gave me the cutest cut in the world that will save me from screaming and crying all summer long in the heat. Rachel did my wedding hair and makeup...I couldn't have asked for a better stylist. She is creative, listens to you, and wants nothing more than the bride to be happy! I changed my mind once about my hair and she was totally on-board all the way. Her recommendations and small tips were super helpful. About a year ago, I was orphaned by my beloved hair stylist, and too much time and money was spent looking for someone who I could trust again with my hair. Today's an exciting day though, because I walked out of a salon with modelesque hair and the biggest smile on my face -- I found "the one". I can't begin to explain how friendly and comfortable the staff and stylists are at Orbit. They welcome you in as if you were entering their home. If you have an AM appointment, you must try their coffee. That sounds weird to say for a salon, but it must be brewed with crack or something because it's so smooth and delicious. I have long, thick hair that scares even me sometimes, but it wasn't a problem for Erin. She is an amazing stylist and addressed all of my concerns. We'd never met before, but it didn't take me long to relax and trust her abilities. She walked me through each step, and lopping off five inches didn't feel so terrifying after all. I scheduled with Elizabeth D. for a haircut and balayage. I have naturally thick, dark brown hair. I also have tons of it! It's dry and frizzy. That can make it hard to work with. However, Elizabeth did such as great job! I asked for a rose gold balayage, and I knew that it would be a difficult color to achieve, given how dark my hair naturally is. I've had a balayage in the past, but I never truly understood the process. Elizabeth explained every step to me and taught me so much about my hair. The best part is that she's easy to talk to. She's funny, down to earth, and refers to herself a "hair nerd." I could tell how much she cares about her work. And I couldn't be happier with the results! I've gotten so many compliments already. I've been going to Orbit for about 3 years now, and I love it! I have long, very straight hair. It's hard to screw up a cut with my hair. I also have blond highlights and lowlights. I always look for a colorist who is so good, no one notices that I pay for my hair color. That's what I found at Orbit with Erin. She does such a great job; it's so subtle and natural looking. All that said about subtlety, if you're looking for something much cooler, you'll find that at Orbit too. I also see Amy for massages. Three years of law school have done a number on my back and shoulders. Amy works out all of my knots and sends me on my way with a bounce in my step. The new location is cheery and colorful. I think the owner did a lot of the work himself. Maybe that accounts for the fact that getting pretty at Orbit won't break the bank. read more

This was the second hair cut I have received here in Austin and I must say it was astronomically more impressive than the first. Without any expectation or previous knowledge of this salon, I ventured in with a free coupon. I was a bit surprised to find the salon located where it was but found the inside atmosphere very energetic with a unique "Austin style." Upon entry I was offered a cool glass of water, in real glass which I was impressed by, and asked to fill out a survey so my stylist could get a better idea of my hair history. I have only every filled out background checks in doctors' offices, but this made sense, they want to get to know their customer/patient:) I was feeling risky, so I went for a look that was shorter than normal and was very pleased with the outcome. They are relatively inexpensive for the level of service the provide....certainly a lot less expensive then some of the other hipster salons in town. Finding a hair stylist is fraught. If they are cool I risk walking out with a Posh razor cut. If they are not cool I risk leaving with an Aniston. This is how it has always been, but no longer. Ross has a cool aesthetic (check out his homemade seventies style styrofoam cup lamp) and he was studying to be an architect before he decided to cut hair. He is very warm, listens well, will look at photos if you bring them and even redid my bangs according to an old drivers license photo! Magic. read more

4 stars only because I didn't get the exact ombre I wanted which I would say is mostly because of my natural hair color. It was more baylayage than ombre in the end. To start off with, my hair is dark and it took 2 visits of lightening and toning to get my hair color to change to a reddish brown color the first visit. The second visit did help to turn my hair a lighter brown but not as close to a darker blonde as expected. I REALLY appreciated that my stylist did not make me pay for the second visit as she said she wanted to make sure she did all she could to give me what I wanted. Overall great experience and service. Haircut was awesome and did just as I said, not cutting off my length. Cool atmosphere and offer drinks as well. read more

Since I moved to Austin over a year ago, I've gone to about 5 different hair salons. The first four left me terribly unimpressed. I randomly purchased a living social deal for this salon, figuring why not, it can't be any worse than the results I've been getting so far... As it turned out, I was quite happy with both my cut and my highlight. I also really liked the girl (Amber) who gave me my cut. She was quite knowledgeable about the products and seemed really intent on making sure I had a good experience. Which I'm happy to say, I did. Just updating...I recently decided to cheat on my current stylist and see Ross for a cut and highlight. He did a fantabulous job; I've gotten lots of compliments. I realized after I was already sitting in his chair that I was taking a big risk by getting color done by someone without having ever seen his work (not even a haircut), but as soon as he started working, I felt at ease. He seems to just have a natural talent at doing hair...he's really good at visualizing things and explaining what he's going to do and why. And the risk definitely paid off. The highlights look great. He did a great job at picking the colors, and he shaped up my haircut without chopping too much off (which is what I wanted). Plus he's really nice and funny, and that made the 2-hour process go a lot quicker. read more

I have been going to Orbit for a little over a year and I was turned a loyal customer ever since I stepped foot in their last location. I walked in with hair past my hips--thick, unruly and "exotic" but damn tired of it. I wanted a new look that would liberate me from what I had for 20+ years. I am forever grateful to Orbit for connecting me with Sunny. Sunny had the answer, and I had faith in her when she shared her vision during our first consultation. Sunny didn't just practice on me. She saw something great and was daring enough to make it happen. She approached it like an artist who was willing to work with given materials. She was excited by my thick hair and curls, unlike most stylists who are afraid to touch curly hair. Her frankness and enthusiasm made me eager to take the leap and cut my hair into something that would surprise me. What resulted was sheer brilliance. It was voluminous, curly and very unique. NO ONE has my hair style and I can thank Sunny for that. Ever since then, I've gotten my hair cut shorter and shorter, feeling more daring every time. She puts so much thought into trimming my bangs so they are perfection. I am not afraid to tell Sunny that I want something more "out there" every time and she always delivers. I hands down thank Sunny for all the compliments I receive everyday (not a joke) because I don't think it's superficial. I would compliment myself too. I was super excited to make an appointment here on my birthday in February to look and feel good for my birthday. My stylist was nice enough but was working HARD on trying to convince me to color or gloss my virgin hair, despite how many time I said I don't want the maintenance and like my natural hair. She also gave me such an uneven cut that I could visibly see and had her fix THREE!!! times to get looking even. It really is not that hard to bring the pieces of hair together in front to check that the layers around my face are even...I have never had to request a stylist to make my hair even much less multiple times. To top it all off, they charged my total amount as my tip on the bill. Luckily, somebody at the front caught the issue and fixed it before I even got the emailed receipt/saw on my credit card but really sealed the deal as the most unpleasant haircut I have had in my life. Thank God we are all in quarantine so nobody is seeing me while it grows out because post-shower after my cut, my hair was still uneven. Edit: I don't understand the relevance of a review left one week or two months later. I am so overwhelmingly disappointed by the job of my stylist two months later, I left a review when I initially was going to chalk it up to a bad experience. Rather than get defensive, perhaps follow up with your stylist. I don't live in Austin, there was no way to go back and get it fixed. Hence, no reason to call back and see what could be done. I was just happy to not be charged double in the end but the salon owner's poor response to criticism is just even more disappointing and makes me glad I left this review in the end! read more

These guys here are so damn cool. And, good at what they do. As a hairstylist myself, I am pretty picky in who I would have do my hair. Or, for that matter, where I would like to find myself when having my hair done. Fortunately for Austin, there is Orbit Salon. This unique salon is carved out of an old 2 story home near the University of Texas. Every room in the salon boasts a different interior decor, with hair stations set up within. If I were a betting man, I'd definately put my money on this shop. (Go see Mischa for your haircolors.... a little bird told me she rocks hXc at doing color!) Also, this salon is consistently winning Award in the Austin Area, for best salon. So, seriously, go check it out. They're all good there. read more

After reading these glowing reviews, I think I must have come on an off day. It wasn't that easy to get an appointment for after 5 PM and everyone seemed really exhausted (probably due to the influx of Groupons). The receptionist asked if I wanted a drink and when I said I'd like a hot tea, he went to "heat up water" and never returned with my drink, just stayed at the receptionist desk chatting with a coworker. Almost the entire time I was getting my hair done my hairstylist was instructing another hairstylist on how to do a straightening treatment, that she obviously didn't know how to do, for a different client (Glad I wasn't that person!) That being said, even though the hair stylists seemed a little less-than-enthusiastic, they were still friendly enough and my hair looked fantastic. They let me use the Groupon towards just a blowout/style instead of the haircut that the Groupon was supposed to be for. Although they kind of did so hesitantly which I don't understand because usually a haircut comes with a blowout at the end anyways. Didn't I just like...save you a step? I don't know. Maybe I will try to go again once all the Groupon craziness boils down. read more

I decided to go to Orbit based on Yelp reviews because I needed to get my hair done for my wedding and since the salon is on the East side and so was my wedding, it seemed very convenient. This was the best decision ever! Scheduling the wedding hair appointments was easy and I received very friendly recommendations and service over the phone. I made an appointment for a hairstyle run-through with Ross. My hair looked great in the up-do run-through and I felt very bridal. A few weeks later I came in for a pre-wedding trim. Well, let's just say I was in a hair slump and hated my boring growing-out wedding hair. Ross gently agreed that I could have a better cut and still be able to wear my hair up if I wanted to. I decided to go for it! Enter the cutest haircut I've ever had! Ross worked with my hair texture to create a fabulous, low-maintenance 'do. I loved it and decided that I wanted to highlight my cute haircut on my wedding day rather than try to recreate the up-do that wasn't really "me." I am so happy with my decision! I loved that I looked like myself, but 100 times more glam on my wedding day. My bridesmaids all got their hair done at Orbit as well and everyone looked amazing! I didn't have any preferences for their hairstyles, so everyone just got what they wanted--an up-do, some partial up-dos, and one fabulous rockabilly pouf. I loved that everyone's hair suited their personalities and looked beautiful too. I know there are already a million reviews for the salon (I'm rounding up, slightly), but I just need to throw in a review for Rachel. This woman spent hours on my hair-- and I am not rounding up. Granted, I have tons of curly hair, and anyone who cuts it gets forced into a lot of quality time. However, Rachel probably wins the award for most-time-spent, and not because she was inefficient, but because she cut my hair dry, washed it, dried it (that was the giant time suck), and checked/recut as necessary. I know a lot of women think the dry cut for curls is necessary, but I'm still pretty agnostic as far as that goes. But what I do know is that my hair looks good (as good as it can, anyway) and that it's been easier to style, and that's all I really care about. Like waist-length, thick, coarse hair. And because I refuse to cut it all off, Sunny's taken me through variation upon variation of color, texture, layers and styles. She patiently walked me through curling iron technique 101 multiple times, until I got it down pat (even if I'm still too lazy to do it regularly...) and when she makes a suggestion, she's always right.
