McKenzie was my stylist and she absolutely amazing and gave me a wolf cut on my curly hair which I never thought was possible. It came out absolutely amazing and she 100% deserves a raise. The vibe of the salon was amazing and the entire staff was sweet. The shampoo room had dimmed lighting and was so relaxing. I'm a dog groomer and my back had been killing me the past few days and I nearly cried tears of joy when I realized their hair dryers had a massage function. I've had a couple of positive experiences here (primarily with Tien who has left the salon). Salon is cute and clean and seems like they do a lot to create a welcoming atmosphere. However, my last visit with new stylist Belle left me with complete shock and disappointment. We clearly did not have same idea of color, but I also ended up with a refresh butterfly cut with terribly uneven layers all around my hair, and hair around my face chopped back to my ears because she wanted to remove weight. It was also extremely texturized leaving holes through out my hair. I for sure had damage but walked out with even more somehow, and didn't even realize how bad because she didn't do the included styling at the end (realized at home this cut was impossible to style!). They offered a corrective service which I appreciated after spending $400, and knowing it's a small business. Salon owner was nice but ultimately the color was still off (explicitly asked for a shadow root but just had lots of chaotic bleach), and cut hair was already cut and too far gone to blend apparently. Senior stylist who was correcting also continuously yanked my hair in the bowl, saying she had to in order to get the toner on everything. Super painful and I don't even have a sensitive head. Didn't realize how bad and uneven it still was all around until getting another corrective service at another salon recently. Such an uncomfortable experience overall and definitely not the salon for me. Hope others have a better experience or go to Wheelhouse ATX who has been nothing but kind, professional, and very skilled at handling a very messy correction read more

I've only left Apotheca for about two hours and I cannot get over how stellar my haircut came out! Not only is this salons truly spacious, clean, and well lit, but the entrance is a horticulture's paradise. They take pride in creating a community and you can see how embracing they are for everyone to come and get their hair done here. Not only is this a safe space and open to all for the queer community and beyond, but they offer hair, makeup, spa, and treatment services. I was able to make a same day appointment and was guided on how they have a few different tiers of stylists and after going over my needs, the receptionist guided me to book with Samaia. We all know how annoying parking can get, so I was stoked when they informed me about the complimentary parking within the same building for retail. It's the first three floors so make sure it's marked for retail (we hate getting towed in this house). As I walked in, I was promptly greeted and asked what I would like to drink. Now in all my years of getting my haircuts, I have never been offered SNACKS upon check-in. What a simple yet amazing way to elevate your salon. They had alcoholic and non-alcoholic options and you're encouraged to access the snacks and fridge if you desire something else. My barber/stylist Samaia met me in the lobby after I waited for a few minutes and ushered me into the back. Don't let your initial opinion fool you because there are like 10+ chairs and a dedicated hair washing room (with charging stations) there. I was informed my cut included a wash, style, and cleanup which was much appreciated. I showed her a few examples of hairstyles that stood out to me and she gaved me her open and honest expert opinion which was so nice. I loved she didn't just say yes we can do that and then hit my hair. We took a few minutes discussing options and we decided on a cut that would give me the effect I desired yet room for growth. Samaia's skillset transformed my hair and gave me the Cinderella effect of transforming me from a pumpkin to a beautiful glass carriage. She took her time and carefully used scissors and plenty of different tools for my hair. Many of which where the first I've seen even with my multiple visits to salons and barbershops in my lifetime. What stood out to me though was her approach to educate and demonstrate how to utilize tools when at home. It felt achievable and I even ended up purchasing a diffuser tool for my blowdryer. My hair feels and looks like a celebrity cut and I am so thankful that Samaia was able to give me the haircut I've been wanting to have for the longest time. I'll definitely be back!! read more

I was super disappointed with the haircut I received at Apotheca & how the situation was handled afterward. JJ was no longer at the salon so I selected an appt based on time availability & was scheduled with a newer stylist (Belle). I came in asking for a 3-in trim long invisible layers to keep my existing shape & a small trim to my face-framing. After the haircut my hair was styled so it was difficult to tell how the hair cut came out. Once I got home wet my hair & let it air-dry (how I normally wore it) I could see that my face-framing was very uneven-my right side was noticeably shorter than my left & both sides were cut bluntly instead of softly sloping. I went back to the salon so this could be fixed. Instead of my bangs being corrected they ended up more uneven & way shorter. When I pointed this out the stylist kept cutting more off the right side without checking in. Eventually I was told that the way my hair was falling was just "how my hair grows" & that I would need to style it-which wasn't true for me as I normally air-dried my hair & it fell well. This was esp upsetting bc it was NYE. I had to go to another salon Swamp Mermaid with Tori the same day to fix my bangs so I could attend my plans. Bc of how badly they were cut she had to cut them much shorter just to restore any flow, leaving me with bangs I asked Tori for her opinion on the rest of my haircut. She turned me around handed me a mirror & pointed out all the random short chunks throughout my hair explaining that it was uneven -- especially on the right side & in the back while the left side had noticeably longer layers. Some of these short chunks were about 6 in shorter than the overall length of the rest of my hair. She didn't have enough time that day to properly fix it so we scheduled another appt to correct the rest of the cut. When I contacted Apotheca I only asked for a partial refund to cover the cost of having my bangs fixed elsewhere. I was told they didn't offer refunds & only allowed you to return to the same stylist -- which I had already done & it made things worse. After back & forth I was offered a credit but it didn't cover what I actually paid once their mandatory "safety & sustainability" fee deposit & tip were included. I also asked if someone more experienced (or the owner) could look at my hair so they could see what went wrong & possibly use it as a training opportunity but they didn't follow up on that & I never spoke to the owner directly. When I went back to the salon the situation became even more frustrating. There were no notes on my account about this credit so I spent quite a bit of time there while the front desk employee contacted the owner multiple times to confirm it since he didn't remember my case. Even using the credit was difficult because none of the products in the store had prices & the employee didn't know how to use their computer system to look them up. I ended up having to look them up myself online just to use the credit. Based on the uneven haircut the need to pay another salon to correct it & the difficulty resolving the situation with Apotheca afterward this has been one of the most frustrating haircut experiences I've had. I'm currently 3 cuts into fixing this haircut & will need more because of the length difference between the random short pieces at the outer layer of my hair compared to the rest of my hair. Tori has been great throughout this process. Based on her recommendations she was conservative with the cuts because so far we have cut about an additional 4 in beyond the original 3 in cut at Apotheca. She understood that I didn't want my hair to go above my shoulders so she recommended fixing my hair over multiple sessions to give it time to grow. She consistently checked in with me to make sure everything was feeling & looking good which was something Apotheca didn't do even after I let them know the cut wasn't right. I'm sharing this experience so future clients know what happened & how the situation was handled. I recommend you skip this place & go to Swamp Mermaid instead. read more

For a really long time, I have been wanting to rock vibrant, fashion pink ombré hair, and I decided in autumn 2022 to FINALLY take the dive. As a Yelper, I spent a lot of time researching salons that could make my vision a reality in Austin, and when looking for LGBTQ+ owned salons, I found Apotheca Salon & Barbershop. I immediately noticed the affirming space and pricing for all (including gender neutral bathrooms) on their website and saw that their focus on an all-inclusive space. Plus, their hair photos were super PRETTY. I was sold! One great thing about Apotheca is that they have the amazing Director of Guest and Staff Relations, ~i~, who helps you schedule via text messaging, called to discuss my vision with me, and even sends photos you like to your artist before you come into the salon. The level of detail of communication before I even arrived with ~i~ was outstanding, and that has continued in my visits to the salon as a repeat customer. Back in October, I had my first cut and color with a wonderful artist, Nick, who is no longer with Apotheca as he is now doing real estate. He did a great job with creating my ombré hair with first doing a blonde balayage and then adding the pink, but the pink color he used faded quickly, as it was more of a glaze. I messaged ~i~ about a week later, who quickly told me the salon would get me scheduled with Irene to fix the pink immediately. And that was how I met the visionary, outstanding, kind, and talented artist, Irene. She had prepared a beautiful color chart for me to look at it, and she had a strategy to have the pink/purple go on vibrant and on my blonde ombré for longer for the color to really stay. She also gave me amazing tips on how to wash my hair (COLD AF water, y'all), Aveda products to use, and other things that impact fashion colors like heat or the pool. The color Irene created was stunning, and it lasted for a REALLY long time with her tips. It also grew out beautifully, and people complimented my hair even months later because hints of pink were still there. I returned in January to see Irene again, and this time I asked her to go a bit more pink with a bit less iris, and it looked just similarly stunning. Not only is Irene incredibly talented, but I also love how the Apotheca team communicates with one another, giving each other tips. They are all also genuinely lovely people to chat with like the dedicated founder, Steffan, and Robert, who is a mentor artist, hair guru, world traveler, and a gem of a person. Basically, I cannot say enough stellar things about Apotheca, Irene, and their full team. Whether you just need a blow out for a fun night, to restock your Aveda products, a quick trim, extensions, or want to go for your dream fashion color hair, they are ready to welcome you fully! read more

I've only gone here for blowouts and they are probably the reason I renewed my lease at my apartment upstairs from them. I use ClassPass and have been taken care of by many of the girls for blowouts and love them all (Monse, Marisa and Samaia) . I just happen to see Marissa the most at first and she is usually who I see! She's so sweet and understands what I look for in a blowout. She gives AMAZING head massages. I usually hate sitting through beauty services but a blowout here is usually the highlight of my week! Such friendly workers all around too! read more

I see Irene. She maintains my hair and is willing to go along with any whim I'm feeling at the moment. Now, I take full responsibility for my hair whims, but Irene's still an incrementalist where she will gradually make her way towards the extreme end of my hair visions which provides me with plenty of opportunities to say "ok, we're getting too short" or something like that. Since I've been seeing Irene for so long, she plans out my hair on the long term depending on what I think I'm going to do - if that means maintaining it short or if I want to grow my hair out from being short she can clean it up to make sure it's not growing out awkwardly. I'm also fairly hair illiterate. I'm convinced that I shampoo my hair wrong. When Irene styles my hair, she goes through the steps and the various products she uses and the order. I appreciate the lecture on what and how to do my hair. It's like a recipe. She should teach an after hours hair styling for dummies class. read more

I met Steffan the owner of Apotheca, at an event he held in our apartment building and have been anxiously awaiting his salon to open. The permanent location has experienced COVID construction delays, but the temporary location opened and I've now been there twice. I hadn't found a barber in Austin that had really become my go-to, so decided to pick someone at random at Apotheca and ended up with Samaia and boy did I luck out! I've never had a barber spend some much time making sure that my hair is cut exactly how I like it. She even asked how I like to handle/style my cowlick. In my 34 years of having my hair cut I've never had anyone ask that! I've always just dealt with it and she walked me through a couple different options. I also do the Treat Yo Face option after each cut and the scented oils with the heated towels are divine. It is definitely worth the extra few bucks. The only room for improvement is that in the temporary location only has one sink for hair washing and the hot water is a bit temperamental, but that should be resolved in the next month or so when they move into their permanent location! read more

Worst haircut I have ever had in my life. I went in after having anxiety and fear because I didn't want a terrible haircut. I've been avoiding a cut for 4 years because of covid and with an ill spouse. I didn't want my hair messed up. I asked for a certain style and my hair was instead chopped and butchered. I went from having hair that was to my mid-back to a chopped, uneven boy haircut. It was a nightmare come true. At one point I looked up and the hair stylist who was supposedly a "master stylist" was chopping at my hair without even looking at me.....she was talking to a person next to her! It has been several weeks since I've been and I still cannot style it. It's impossible to style. I'm mad that my hair looks terrible and that my pocketbook is nearly $100 lighter. The new space is beautiful, warm and conveniently located near ACC Highland and lots of other cool shops. I was going to an event and wanted my hair looking pretty..Irene did an awesome job on my blowout! She also gave great care advice and was very friendly. Really great service. Got my hair cut by Stephani. After a quick consultation of what style I was looking for, she shampooed and conditioned my hair, explaining the products along the way. She also did a really nice steamed towel. She did a great job on my hair, and understood what I was looking for (a transitional haircut so I can grow it out evenly). Would definitely recommend her to anyone. Although they are in a temporary space until their new studio is ready, it was still clean and organized. Do not go here if you value your time and money. I was very frustrated by the end of my appointment after being overcharged and having to spend way more time than anticipated. I went in for a color touch up and simple summer cut. When I made my appointment online, it said 4pm-6pm at the cost of $180 plus tip. I figured that was very fair for a higher quality shop. However, I arrived at 3:50 and wasn't able to leave until almost 8:30. I had to call my husband at 7:00 with foil still on my hair to tell him that I couldn't be home to put our son to bed. Is this how the business always operates or was it just my stylist? I was lucky enough to have child care, but what kind of shop says 2 hours and that turns into 4 1/2? Secondly the price. As I mentioned I was told $180 when I booked. I figured with tip it would be around $200. However, while washing my hair, the stylist decided to do a deep conditioning treatment without telling me, then changed me $40 extra for it and I didn't find out until the bill at the end. If he had asked, I would have declined. I assumed he was just going to shampoo my hair. I gave the place 2 stars instead of 1 because the color did come out really nice and the staff was friendly. I had an amazing hair experience at Austin Curls! I sent a message through Yelp and they quickly replied. Everyone was super friendly, open-minded, and there was great service overall. Austin Curls is also vegan, so that was a huge bonus as well! I went into get a hair cut and bangs for my curly hair. I wanted to make sure I was going somewhere where people knew how to deal with curly hair and I wasn't disappointed! My cut was done by Hannah and I will definitely be going back to her. My hair was washed thoroughly, I got a head massage, and most importantly, I spoke about my hair journey very openly and Hannah gave me lots of advice and also tips for my bangs. read more
