I was on the hunt to satisfy my cravings for a cupcake. While driving around the city of Berkeley, my first thought was to find Cupkates truck but I saw on twitter they had sold out =( My back up plan was to use Yelp as my guide to find the next best thing. Even then I got lost driving around looking for this small cute bakery, it was soo totally worth it. Love at first bite, was everything I was looking for. This bakery is located inside a complex of other food vendors & shops. Since it was 3pm the bakery barely had any selections left. My eyes were set on the last two red velvet cupcakes, but the lady in front of me just purchased them UGH!!!! I happened to notice there was this pink cupcake that had said "Pretty in Pink" which consisted of delightful strawberry cupcakes with blushing pink strawberry butter cream made with real strawberries. I wanna write a simple 2 sentence review but I dunno if yelp would auto-delete it :P tl;dr- great frosting, not so great cupcake. So I had about an hour to burn and I was walking down Shatuck away from Cal. At first, I was like I don't like the city of Berkeley, but the further you got away from the school, the better of the area it was. So like 3-4 blocks made a huge difference. And in this area, it actually feels like a college town :P Anywho, this is just off Walnut and you'll be able to enter through a side "has a lot of signs" area that tell you that L@FB is here. You walk up the stairs and walk straight, make a small left, and then you should be here! I didn't know what cupcake to get, but they have mini a choice! You could get the regular size or the mini sizes :3 I left that error on purpose btw :P The consensus on Yelp was to try the green tea/matcha cupcake, so I got that and only that. The frosting was really good. Like you could taste green tea. It was creamy, it was smooth, it was suave. But then you went to the rest of the cupcake. And for me, I like moist cupcakes and the cupcake here kinda was that? But it's way too heavy for a cupcake and I wasn't a fan of it ._. It was a total flop for me and I kinda threw it out. Love at First Bite is located in an inviting, elevated alcove not too far from Cheese Board. I'm a sucker for cupcakes, and I hadn't had one in a long time; I decided to try the shop on a whim after purchasing some cards nearby. The store has a gleaming interior with white, clean surfaces and baking machines on display. I checked out the selection of cupcakes and ended up getting a selection of 4. I only tried two of them: the vanilla and lemon cupcakes. The highlight for me was the frosting, which was flavorful and not too sweet. However, I thought the cake was on the dry side; I bought them in the morning which makes me think they probably were fresh and not some stale leftovers from the day before. I'm willing to give Love At First Bite another try to see if I may have gotten a mediocre batch or whether their cupcakes tend to be consistently on the denser side of things; I will update if my review changes. read more

I came here on a weekday afternoon about 45minutes before closing. It's located at the very back of a little village of stores, and the interior is very clean and neat. There's not much seating, with just a few scattered tables outside. Service was friendly, but it was obvious they had started to close for the day. Since it was so close to closing time, there were only a couple flavors left, something I hadn't anticipated before dropping by. Coconut vanilla, coconut chocolate, strawberry, and mud pie: none of which I would normally pick, but I ended up getting the mud pie and coconut vanilla. This would be a result of dry red velvet cake, which I opted to buy in mini cupcake form ($1.25) to inhale in the store while waiting for my friends to order. Not a good start. I left with a sweet potato and mud pie cuppie ($2.95 each). "Fluffy" was the descriptor of the frosting written on the sweet potato cupcake card; it tasted like sweet, whipped marshmallow, and me gusta! The treat reminded me of Thanksgiving. Turkey and cranberry sauce on the side, plz. I was excited by the chocolatey aroma the mud pie let off, but it was more ordinary than the sweet potato. It wasn't awful but I am not excited to go back or recommend this place. Came here with my son for a treat. They had a variety of cupcake options to chose from. None really caught my eye so I just ended up getting the mud pie and my son go the pretty in pink. The mud pie supposedly has mocha frosting but I honestly didn't taste any coffee flavor. And there really wasn't much frosting to taste since it was a very thin layer. I am not the biggest fan of tons of frosting on cupcakes but more than what's on this cupcake would have been nice. The cupcake itself was basic to me. I wish tasted more chocolaty and it was too dense for me. I tried a bit of my sons frosting on his cupcake and it was overly too sweet. I felt like whoever made the frosting added to much liquid to the mixture and tried to fix it by adding more powered sugar. My son said he loved his cupcake though he mainly just ate the frosting. I don't know, I was excited to try this place but I was just underwhelmed. Maybe if I tried more flavors?? I did also get the rugelach but my parents ate that and they weren't that excited about it. In Walnut Square on the second floor. There's a staircase leading up to it on Vine St. I am not sure if you can go up the stairs on Walnut. It's pretty creepy to go up because it almost feels abandon but its definitely there. Street parking which isn't too bad, we got lucky and found one just across the way. THE GOOD: Delivery fine, the guy just dropped the cake in a paper bag outside the front door. The cake looked nice. I choose a rainbow cake design from their cake gallery with some modifications. The cake was moist and tasted good. THE BAD: The frosting was EXTREMELY SWEET. Now I have a sweet tooth but wow that frosting was sweet. I just visited Love at First Bite for the first time today. I was so excited to go there. When I arrived the salesperson at the counter did not look up. She was on the phone taking a phone order- so I waited patiently. What got me was that she never once acknowledged me. I had the best cupcakes ever from this bakery and I'm so happy I now know about this place. My coworkers brought me a cupcake from here twice and it was truly life changing. I had the matcha cupcake and wow the icing was just perfectly slightly sweet complementing the deep matcha taste which was also present in the cake part. The cake to icing ratio was just perfect as well. Now it's hard for me to try other flavors because the matcha is that great but I heard the cookies and cream one is good too. I am always on the hunt for a good cupcake and I can't believe in my years of visiting Berkeley that I had not heard of Love At First Bite. The location is completely random, and unless you hear or read about it, you aren't likely to find it. Here's what I tried: Red Velvet: This is what I use to compare all cupcakeries. The cake tasted a little bland, but the cream cheese frosting was great! Hummingbird: I am fairly new to the Hummingbird cake...This one tasted more like banana then pineapple. What would have made this truly amazing is if they would stir in coconut flakes into the frosting! Pumpkin: I was excited to try this because usually pumpkin is only a seasonal flavor. It was light and fluffy with the pumpkin not being too overpowering. Strawberry: If you have ever had anything that tastes like artificial strawberries, you know that that can be the kiss of death in desserts. I was pleased to find that this cupcake tasted fresh, with the tartness of the berries mellowed out by the sugar and frosting. All-in-all, we had a good experience. While it may not be the best cupcake I've ever had, it may be the best in the Bay Area. But we have always enjoyed baking and buying baked products with the best quality organic natural flavors and ingredients resulting in moist cakes and creamy frostings that make the finished product a joy to taste. Recently a last minute large family/friend occasion with lots of kids necessitated buying rather than baking and we decided to try LAFB. We bought full size cupcakes in every flavor. The frostings tasted like crushed flavored sugar. The cake part was dense and dry and tasted overwhelmingly like little more than sugar. Despite having a wicked sweet tooth, I'm not usually into cupcakes. But Love At First Bite has converted me! Their flavors are unique and incredibly delicious. My favorites so far are strawberry - which tastes oddly fresh, like there are actual berries in the mixture - and matcha green tea (ditto, only tea!!). The cupcakes aren't too sweet, and the base is as delicious as the frosting. Does anyone else find this to be a rarity in the cupcake world...? We are crazy about the cookies and cream, salted caramel, and peanut butter chocolate among others... their special flavors are also really amazing. I've come here a couple times now and am definitely a fan. The first time I ordered six different types for a birthday brunch and everyone devoured them. The green tea was really good, and the lemon pistachio, strawberry... all good and just the right amount of sweetness.
