I was running errands in the FiDi and needed sustenance. After a bout of indecisiveness, I happened to pass by Lou's realizing I hadn't had their sandwiches in years. So I decided to eat here. Turkey cranberry is my favorite type of sandwich, and they happened to have one on the menu. After giving them my very old punch card, I patiently waited for my sandwich, which didn't take long. The seating area is next to the lobby of the building Lou's is in. There's plenty of tables that can accommodate one to four people. So it's a nice space to get some work done or to have lunch with coworkers. And the sandwich is massive! I was planning to eat half, but it was too delicious and I ended up eating the whole thing. It was loaded with turkey meat and that sweet cranberry sauce, which paired well with the jalapeño spread that added a nice heat. And I appreciate that the sandwich came in a sourdough roll. I find turkey crans are either served in sliced sourdough or Dutch crunch. I prefer sourdough, so I'm glad I didn't have to make the substitution. And the ladies who took my order were so nice and I'm glad I amused them with my decade-old punch card. This is my fourth sandwich so clearly I need to come back more often. They have several locations in the city, but this particular one in the FiDi is a nice place to have lunch. read more

This review is specifically for this location only. I'll probably start going to the Pine Street location from now on. I ordered the hot pastrami, and the sandwich size looked nothing like what's advertised. I've been to Lou's several times before, but the meat-to-bread ratio at this location was terrible. Usually I can only eat half and save the rest for later because it's so filling, but this one definitely didn't hit the same. Wanted a sandwich and subways closed near my work so ventured to this place. It's nested in a larger business place. Comfy chairs and areas to sit and eat. I ordered the Italian special sandwich. The person taking the order was polite and helped me with my order. Waited maybe like 5min and the guy in the back came out with my sandwich. Was around 15 for the sandwich. I grabbed lunch here with a friend on the eve of NYE, and it was a very chill atmosphere in contrast with the holiday hustle elsewhere in the city. Shortly after arrival, I ordered a chicken pesto sandwich without cheese, pickles, and jalepeño spread on Dutch crunch bread and then waited for my friend to arrive. My friend arrived and ordered before my order was ready. Fortunately I remembered the name of the customer ahead of me because when my order was called right after his, the lady said "Jake" instead of "Jade". It turns out that the cashier entered my order under the wrong name. The lady who announced my order asked me to verify what exactly I ordered before she would give me my food. First time customer here I walked in the restaurant around 8:05Am placed an order but 820 I received my order. Unfortunately I didn't realize my order was incorrect until I got to my job . I called the store immediately seeing if I can come back following my next break to return the sandwich and get what I want . The host was being very helpful until she gave the phone to the person who said she makes the " sandwichs"she was being highly disrespectful too me . She even hung up in my face when i called back asking for her name so I can file complaint . I was told the manager name is Diana , but at first they said it was no manager ....this is San Francisco customer service is number 1 . I feel so sickening after that conversation I threw that $15 sandwich away I don't want a new sandwich I'm never coming back filling a dispute with my bank immediately . This location is in my building and for a while I dismissed it. My loss. Now that I have become a regular, I can say that I've been quite satisfied with everything served. I recently started ordering for office meetings and the reviews from my office have been very positive. The clam chowder is a favorite I get the breakfast sandwich, with my customizations, and now they know my name and my order. Nice! This is a good lunch spot for FiDi. Sandwiches are $12.50-$14. Salads are $10-$11. Prices on their website are outdated. My sandwich , the LLB special $12.50 was roast beef, turkey, ham, swiss, provolone on dutch crunch, was alright. The New England Clam Chowder $8.50 was chunky and not filled all the way up. I have been to Lou's twice and do not understand the hype at all. The first time, ordered the chicken pesto sandwich. The bread was soggy, and ingredients fell out as I was trying to eat it. Soggy bread, soggy ingredients, lacked flavor. At some point I gave up on the bread and just ate the ingredients on a plate. By the way, I ordered a sandwich at 11 and did not get called to pick it up until 11:25. They seem to prioritize DoorDash/delivery service orders. The second time I ordered their Southwestern breakfast sandwich. The ingredients themselves were very flavorful, but once again I encountered soggy bread syndrome. Within minutes the sandwich was nearly impossible to eat. If they grilled the bread or used a more robust bread, they could avoid this issue. Can't recommend, sadly. Maybe their salads are the way to go. read more

This is a cafe that I've been to a few times for lunch, and it's a great place to get a quick sandwich in the heart of FiDi! While it is in the lobby of an office building, it does have its own area with seating in case you want to eat there. The service is friendly, and typically it only takes five minutes or so for your order. I usually get the Roma's Club with Dutch Crunch, and for the size of the sandwich that you get for the price (which is fairly affordable by SF standards) I think it's a pretty good value. Lou's is my favorite spot to grab a bite to eat at lunch. Most of their sandwiches are under $10 and could easily be 2 meals. They use very high quality boars head meat, their bread is always fresh (sourdough and Dutch Crunch are my favs), and their special sauce and jalapeño spread are delicious! Everyone I've interacted with there has been super nice and welcoming, and the food takes about 10 minutes to come out, so if you're on a time crunch make sure you order ahead. This time, I got a turkey cranberry on Dutch Crunch and it was amazing as always. This is one of the most affordable places for a good quality sandwich or salad in downtown SF. I've gotten the chicken pesto, amicado, and build your own sandwich with pastrami and roast beef, as well as the Chinese chicken salad. All have been tasty, and the sandwiches and salads are good size so you don't leave hungry. They have a variety of interesting combinations that I'm eager to try. As of June 2023, the sandwiches start at $9.85 for a build-your-own without cheese and $10.90 for their specialty sandwiches, which is much cheaper than other sandwich spots in SF. They also have a rewards program where you get a free sandwich after a certain number of purchases (you'll need to enter your phone number for this). Tip: to avoid waiting, try calling ahead your order, and they usually have it ready within 10-20 minutes. At their Pine Street location, I've called ahead and been quoted 15 minutes until the sandwich is ready, but when arriving 15 minutes later, I've had to wait an additional 15 minutes for my sandwich to be ready. I haven't had that issue at this location on Battery Street - their estimated prep times for sandwiches have been accurate. Keep up the great work! read more

I've eaten at their other FiDi location before and really enjoyed it. Seems they opened this one with quite unfortunate timing right before the pandemic. But alas, they've reopened now and are serving up tasty sandwiches for those of us that live in this now desolate neighborhood. New England Clam Chowder: Haven't had this in ages, but the slight drizzle outside inspired me to crave a little comfort food. The soup was nice and creamy with big bits of clam. The sleeper star though was the bread. A nice sourdough slice with a generous spread of pimento cheese that was slightly melted. Way more exciting than bread & butter. Plus it soaked up the soup nice and added a fun accent. Buffalo Chicken Sandwich: I'm normally not a fan of chicken breast sandwiches, but the constant appearance of this sandwich in the Yelp photos caused me to step out of my comfort zone. It was swimming in buffalo and bleu cheese sauce, making it extremely flavorful. The soft chewy roll was the perfect texture for it too. Didn't have the crunch of a buffalo wing, but that's fine. Hot Pastrami Sandwich: Not your traditional pastrami on rye with swiss cheese and kraut. Instead it was on a hearty Dutch crunch roll with orange-colored cheddar and lots of fresh veggies. It's hard to break the traditionalist mindset, but it was tasty in it's own way. I mean the meat was made in-house and the Dutch crunch roll makes any sandwich amazing. read more

In a sea of mediocre lunchtime salads in the FiDi, Lou's will likely stand out because their sandwiches are considered legendary out in the Richmond. Not that I would actually spit. The space does indeed look like a lounge in an office building with banquettes, bar tables, and communal spaces, and their wide sandwich selection was definitely available. Definitely an alternative to consider in the concrete jungle. If there was a James beard award for sandwiches, Lou's would be so deserving. Their Dutch crunch bread is unlike any other places. It's lighter, sweeter, and the crust doesn't tear apart the roof of your mouth. Their sandwich concoctions are SO good even when it doesn't initially sound good to me.
