Best biscuits in the South! Everything is homemade, local and fresh. Friendly, homey atmosphere. Come early before the biscuits sell out!!!

Best Biscuits and Gravy with poached egg in America
Robert N.

This is my first review I have posted before leaving the premises where I had a meal. I am in Asheville NC supporting the community after the devastation caused by Helene. I had the BEST biscuits & gravy I have ever had. Due to the lack of clean water they use disposable dishware/utensils but that, doesn't reduce the quality, freshness and taste of the dish. The biscuits are perfect and the gravy''s consistency, and protein ingredients are flavorful and delicious I compliment the kitchen staff The wait staff is friendly and deliver excellent service.

My hubby and I stopped here for brunch on our way down the mountain and I cannot rave enough. The food was delicious and came out fast even though they were full. The staff were lovely and attentive. We didn't have the kids with us but I will not hesitate to bring them next time. Seating inside is a little limited but I know they'd make it work. The ambiance was great. Very home cooking esque and cozy. Definitely give Louise's Kitchen a try and don't forget to try the vanilla bean syrup... Trust me.

Reuben Sandwich (GF bread, no Swiss) Potato Salad
Luca D.

Service and ambiance went well and the inside felt like being invited to someone else's house. I got a Reuben sandwich (with corn beef, sauerkraut and thousand island dressing) without Swiss cheese on GF bread, alongside potato salad. The flavors of the sandwich worked out well, but the bread I thought was a little soft. Regarding the potato salad, I usually prefer it warm and this was ice cold, but it was seasoned with paprika and chili powder, which gave it a good kick. Overall, this is the ideal diner-themed spot.

Decided to try a new place. My daughter and I love Black Mountain so we decided to drive up early for breakfast. We chose Louise's kitchen. My daughter order the grit pancakes, delicious. I ordered a veggie bagel with egg, and we shared a fresh made cinnamon roll. The food was absolutely delicious. I forgot pictures of our food because we just dug in so quickly and gobbled everything up. I apologize. Next time there will be pictures. The coffee (nice and strong, yummy )and the service were great. The house is absolutely lovely. I love the ambience and sitting in what was once someone's home really adorable. Please don't skip one of their homemade cinnamon rolls. It was worth the drive to Black Mountain alone.

A very unique experience. You order as you go into the restaurant. As you obtain your seat, someone takes your drink order. The food was five star, the big boy burrito and the grit cake were amazing. When we arrived Saturday morning around 9:30, there was a line of about 20 people which was intimidating but it moved fast enough, especially understanding that they take your order as you enter. A must visit restaurant.

Grit cakes biscuit and rare warmer winter day outside

This place has decent food. Nothing to rave about. Nothing to complain about. They have a variety of breakfast all day and a few more lunch items. I like the grit cakes and black beans. It's yum. Biscuits are quite good but not the best locally. I like the vibe. I have friends who love the pancakes. Coffee is good, they had oat milk. Out door seating is plentiful in warm weather. They get very busy. So if it's peak time (they close at 2pm) except a wait. Showing up closer to 2 gets you straight in typically and they don't rush you to leave -- extra bonus points for that!

A breakfast spot walking distance from your hotel is always a bonus. But when it's a gem like this place, that's a blessing. Cool old house turned into a restaurant. Their outdoor seating is on the wrap around porch. Perfection. We sat on the porch and enjoyed coffee, juice, fresh fruit, perfectly cooked eggs, biscuits with gravy and a magical waffle. It may seem silly but to order a side of fruit and get actual fruit instead of a bowl of melon was amazing. Thankful for small businesses like this!!

Kid's menu - French Toast
Marcela M.

Food here is absolutely a must try! I got the Egg Special (served only on Sundays), which can be described as a Egg Benedict but with a twist! Sauce is super yummy and the sausage is amazing! From what I understood, the sausage is locally sourced and it has a lot of flavor! If you go for this dish, I assure you, you wont regret it! The French Toast was alright, nothing out of the ordinary. If you are looking for something sweet, try something else on the menu. The place itself has a homie feeling! And the people are very friendly!

In my experience, if eggs "over easy" are cooked at too high a temp the whites become leathery. I know some people like that leathery white thing, but just not my preference. And no, the eggs being room temp didn't offset being cooked in too hot oil. The biscuit was doughy (maybe just undercooked) but I was able to eat around the edges of it and the edges were actually tasty. Sure would've liked to have had a whole biscuit tho! I know some people like to eat their biscuits at room temp, but just not my preference. I prefer them hot, I think they taste better. A hot biscuit also helps to melt the butter and at the risk of sounding like a prima donna the cold little bricks of butter I tried and failed to spread on it became a bit of a turnoff. The home fries seemed undercooked but I was able to eat a few. Nothing really special about them, just seemed like a potato chopped up and pushed around in grease. I did like the jam/jelly selection, nicely done. Some may wonder why I didn't complain or send this back. I had an appointment down the road and wouldn't have made that considering the initial order took 12 minutes from payment to plate landing on the table, so a re-do would've been??? no idea how long. Sometimes it's better to just tough it out. It wasn't busy, there was no line to order, about 6-8 patrons total in the restaurant. I was surprised at the wait, but part of that was my order getting crossed with someone else. The other guy who first got my plate shouted over to me that he didn't sneeze on my food, so that was nice.

We arrived at around 7:15 am and were greeted by two regulars hanging out front with their dogs, which meant that Mrs. K. got her morning dog fix before we even made it inside. That set a great tone for a good day. The welcome inside was warm in the small town way that feels genuine instead of forced, just easy smiles and a quick hello as I ordered. It was rather quiet when we arrived but the folks seemed to start pouring in as we sipped our coffees. My cortado was excellent even if it was in a paper cup. Mrs. K. was happy with her latte which is the proper test. We lingered a bit, enjoying the quiet and watching Black Mountain wake up around us before getting back on the road. A great little stop just off I-40 and a perfect start for the day. Five stars! [Review 540 of 2026 - 4635 in North Carolina - 25722 overall]

As a coffee enthusiast, I admit to sometimes being what my wife would call a "coffee snob" from time to time. I'm happy to report that Recess passes every test I have for coffee. The vibe was perfect, with a classic wooden-style to the seating, and even a really great retro/minimalist playground outside for our kids. The Rwandan pour over I had a couple days ago was full-bodied and delicious, with deep red fruit notes. It was made with care using a Kalita wave flat-bottom dripper, and it was clear that the brewer knew what he was doing. It was so good that I picked up a bag of beans they had for sale (from Sweet Bloom roasters), which has been giving me great pour-overs at the house. We also had a butter croissant, which was absolutely delightful. I returned today to try their milk-drink offerings. I had a masala caramel cappuccino to-go, and let me just tell you--these people know what's up. While some of their pastries look decent, there is something about their Viennoiserie (laminated dough) products that they just seem to not understand. Every one of their croissants I've tried were underproved, which causes an undesirable internal texture that is dense and not open and light like croissants are supposed to be. They are also very "bread like", which shows that they are losing control of the temperature of the dough and butter during the lamination process. This causes the butter to melt into the dough, rather than keeping the intended layers. This is what causes the crumb of the croissant to be more bread like, rather than the light honeycomb structure you find in a well-crafted croissant. Their other products, assorted buns, cinnamon rolls, etc., look decent, but I haven't tried much of those as they aren't really what I enjoy. I hope at some point they can dial in their understanding of the laminated dough process as it would only elevate and improve what they offer. However, they seem to be busy, so they may be fine with delivering a lower quality product in that department. I also understand that my perspective may be different than the average customer as I'm a professional pastry chef and consultant. I'm not sharing this review to be negative, but to give an honest opinion that may spark this establishment to look deeper into their process and find ways to offer even more to their customers.

Shannon and Rain were our friendly and helpful servers. There are many seating options. We chose the sun room which was comfortable. Others were seated outside on the side porch and several people were inside. We shared a bowl of the delicious French onion soup. Eat it while it's hot for the best experience. The buckwheat crepes were the perfect consistency to handle the savory entrees. My Market crepe was packed full of goodies including the sausage add-on. Each ingredient stood well on its own. The pesto was a standout. My partner got the mushroom crepe with chicken. She enjoyed immensely. Both entrees came with a fresh greens and balsamic dressing.
