I'm disappointed with Lot 6 unfortunately. We went one night for drinks at the beginning of winter and in my reservation I had requested a table in the atrium. We were seated against the wall under a low ceiling looking out at the atrium. We decided not to fuss about it and accept the table given to us, but we each went out into the main area of the atrium beneath the glass roof to see what it would have been like had our table been there like we had been hoping. We all agreed it would have been better under the glass roof. Still, we had a nice night and enjoyed the drinks and service and decided next time we will be a little pickier on where we sit.
I follow Lot 6 on Instagram and the photos of their weekend brunch (eggs benedict) look very good. Last weekend I was downtown with 5 friends and we were looking for a place to eat. I fought for Lot 6. I got my way. I knew we couldn't guarantee an atrium table but I was hopeful. When we showed up we were asked if we had a reservation. Finding out we did not, the waitress said, "Hmm . . ." as if that was a problem, and went away to try to find us a table. When she returned she told a coworker, "No more walk-ins." We felt a little uncomfortable and unwanted.
We were not seated in the atrium. In fact, the atrium is closed for brunch. Huh?
We were seated at a table in a room to the right as soon as you walk in. There were not many people there but the waitress was alone and appeared stressed. We waited a long time and all took turns going to look at the atrium from the step. It's beautiful in there. Why isn't it open? Oh well . . .
The waitress was barely keeping her patience in check taking our orders, and when she served us coffee it was splashing out of the cups and drops were hitting our laps/shirts. One friend recoiled from her so as not to get splashed, getting splashed anyway. We were kind of laughing about him getting splashed and casually mentioning that it was happening, like it was no big deal, trying to make it pleasant. Waitress didn't apologise or seem to even notice.
The coffee was weak. You could see the bottom of the cup through it. It looked like tea. It tasted how it looked. After trying to choke it down and be silent about it (the waitress was agitated so we didn't want to make things worse for her or make our wait for our food any longer than it was going to be) one of my friends asked if there was something wrong with the coffee. The waitress got a little defensive but said she can make a stronger pot. Another friend then took the opportunity to tell her there were grinds in it as well. The waitress said something like, Well, when you're using fresh grounds that's hard to avoid.
Hm...
She left slightly annoyed and we were like, "You upset her," to my friend who mentioned the grinds.
The next batch of coffee was a little better. She said she put espresso in it to fix it...
Still it splashed on us as it was poured.
Personally I think a pot of coffee should not need espresso added to it to fix it and should not be that weak at a place advertising brunch. Coffee should be right the first time--doesn't need to be amazing, but should be passable. Grinds in the cup isn't the end of the world but isn't typical of a properly made coffee, unless a mistake in the brewing process was made. But okay . . .
We waited a long time for the food, though it didn't seem particularly busy. Unfortunately I didn't like my eggs benedict. The hollandaise had that strong vinegar taste that might be natural and how it's supposed to be when it's homemade, but I don't like it too vinegary. I like it creamy and rich, not sour.
When I got home I saw a post from Lot 6 on social media urging followers to come in for the weekend brunch. I unfollowed. I'm not mad; just not interested anymore. I wanted to like this place for the amazing-looking bar, the atrium, the variety of drinks - they even regularly carry my favourite gin, (Plymouth) so it's not that I won't be back for drinks sometime, maybe, but I won't be fighting for it again, and have no desire to try the brunch again, especially knowing the atrium will be closed. read more
