I never really enjoyed bagels, or bakeries for that matter, before coming to Humboldt County, California. The closet I came to eating baked goods from a bakery was the chocolate croissant at La Bou, in the Sacramento area. My first visit to Los Bagels was at the Eureka location, in old town. My initial reaction was surprise. It did not look like a traditional bakery. It was colorful and had many Jewish and Mexican references all over its walls. I was intrigued by this blend of cultures, and I especially liked all the skeletons and Dia de Los Muertos icons that were displayed (it was close to Halloween). I immediately felt a connection to the location that went deeper than the food. The food was the second thing I noticed. Displayed before my hungry eyes were freshly baked bagels made at their Arcata location. The varieties were and continue to be as colorful as a rainbow: Poppy, Sesame, Plain, Onion, Garlic, Multi-Grain, Poppy Seed, Whole Wheat, Raisin, Multi-Cultural, Jalapeno, Rosemary Parmesan, and, my personal delight, the Slug. On that first day, I was probably too intimidated to try anything real fancy. Since that first day, I have sampled all their boiled and baked bagels. My favorites include the more traditional taste of Onion, the zesty flavor of Garlic, and their infamous Slug, which is an "everything" bagel but in a long vertical shape rather than the circular one. Usually, I am boring when it comes to my bagel toppings. I prefer them toasted with butter. Then, I generously pour slug slime on top (a mixture of their slug toppings: toasted onions, garlic, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, and salt). Since I am a creature of habit, it has taken me time to try some of the other delicious bagel toppings. They are all worthy of a high rating from any food lover. Additional bagel toppings I adore at Los Bagels include guacamole, salsa, and hummus (all three are jam-packed with flavor). I've never been a big fan of cream cheese, but I can assure you that theirs is exceptional. They also offer variations on their cream cheeses including pesto, curry, smoked salmon, wasabi, tofu, and wild herb. Of course, there are a ton of other amazing toppings you can add to any bagel: tomatoes, onions, carrots, olives, tofu, sesame seeds, and cucumbers, to name a few. They offer a wide selection of bagel combinations or you can be daring and create your own. There are also peanut butter and jelly options (jalapeno jelly is extremely tasty), lox, and different meats that can be added to make the perfect bagel. In recent days, I have tried some of their infamous scrambagels, my favorite being huevos los bagels (egg, cheddar cheese, guacamole, and tomatoes. I never believed that one bagel could be as filling as one of theirs. If I go there for breakfast, I am too full for lunch. If I go there for lunch, I usually eat a late dinner. Since my four years in Eureka, I have actually become sick of bagels because I eat them so much at Los Bagels. Luckily, that is not the only item served at the bakery. Their salads are always fresh made with local produce; I really adore their balsamic vinegar dressing. Their other main source of sustenance are their zesty soups. There are too many to list, but there has never been one occasion when I didn't like their daily soup. They always list the ingredients (many are Vegan friendly), and the employees are quick to offer you a sample before you decide to order a bowl. Speaking of samples, you can usually find a plate or basket full of their various items on the counter. They rotate the samples daily, so that all the items on their menu eventually make an appearance. Then there are the sweet baked goods. I have tried all their cookies and croissants and love them all! Some of my favorites are the chocolate "kwasant," as spelled at Los Bagels, Chocolate Chip cookies, and Marlene's Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies. I also enjoy their empanadas and potato knishes. About the only items I haven't really tried are the Jewish favorites, such as the Challah bread. Even that is a lie because I have probably sampled some of these treats on various occasions even if I don't regularly order the items. Last but not least are their drink options. They make a darn good cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. Usually though, I grab a juice from their fridge. The only complaint I have about Los Bagels is that the employees can be a bit slow to get the food to you. However, this attitude is very common in Eureka and especially Arcata places of business. It is truly a part of the atmosphere for Humboldt County. The motto is "relax, visit, and enjoy your time with friends and family." The owners of Los Bagels have perfected the craft of bagel making. You haven't had a good bagel until you try one of theirs. When you plan your next trip to Northern California, don't forget to take a detour to one of their locations, either in Eureka or Arcata. The only low point during our Eureka trip! Hubs loved the name of the place so I went in to purchase a few things. Got a bagel and some baked goods. The plain bagel tasted like onion/sesame, which was not pleasant. If I wanted onion or sesame, I would have ordered those. The baked goods (mexican wedding cookie and choc chip cookie) were not pleasant, both tasted plasticky and nothing like a sweet treat. Definitely not a repeater. read more

Growing up, my father use to take me here and we'd go to town on bagels. Over a decade later, I'm nearly paying for a footlong sandwich for a.. bagel with cream cheese. Now don't get me wrong, they are still delicious but I prefer to buy them in bulk at our local grocers. When I visit Los Bagels, I start to get nervous because the workers do not wear gloves when preparing food. I witness them washing their hands in a little basin, but when you're preparing food that quickly with a plethora of customers waiting, I'm a little skeptical. I have worked in old town for 6 years and I truly enjoy my toasted bagel with goat cheese and veggies. But I can honestly say that every time I have been in this place which I would say is at least twice a month I swear that I will never ever return. But I love the my bagel along with the corn meal lime cookies and rugaluh that I adore. Over the years my main complaint is the never ending awful service. The kids behind the counter have no clue and truly could care less about the customers. It has always been that way for me but I just overlook it and swear to never come back. Last week I could not help myself the craving took over. I walked in and ordered my usual. I could tell the person was not listening at all as I told her what I wanted and sure enough my bagel had cream cheese, capers and something else. I mentioned that I really wanted the goat cheese and was told its Fromage not goat cheese.....well why the cream cheese? I felt frustrated and as she threw together my stuff she pushed it across the counter, I felt embarrassed to order my cookies and I sure wasn't going to order a coffee as she seemed annoyed by me..... I wonder if the owners care they lost money because of the rudeness of their staff? Besides the worst service I have encountered in Humboldt I just don't get the 'to go" ' situation. When you order a bagel loaded with veggies and it's raining and windy by the time I get to the office 2 blocks away the carrots are blowing all over the place, the food is wet because napkins just don't do it for a cover . When I ask for help because I have to walk 2 blocks I am met with blank stares and told that's all we have for to go orders. I have wanted to to yelp about this place so many times but always in a rage of anger. I have let myself cool off for about 3 weeks and I just can't hold it in anymore. The food is good and the tourist seem to enjoy it from what I can tell. The owner seems passionate when I hear him during interviews about the cultural mix and the fabulous products offered....I just wonder why friendly service is not a concern in the Eureka location. read more

Maybe I am spoiled. I have been exposed to great bagels. Moving here from the Bay Area, I used to get my bagels from Noah's. most of the time I went to bagel street cafe. Bagels for 3 dollars at the most and that was a raspberry bagel with blueberry cream cheese. The bagels at bagel street cafe were not only a good price, but twice the size of those at Los bagels. The workers are just your average hippy types with dreds and commy colored clothes. I won't be going back to Los Bagels. It's extremely expensive due to the medical insurance provided to the employees. I think it's great the employees are covered, but at what price? It's a bagel shop, not a doctors office. Charge me for a bagel, not a doctor visit. I've had co pays cost less than their bagels. Sheesh. read more

I love this place. Laid back atmosphere with enchanting artwork. The coffee is excellent,I really like the heart of darkness roast. The Tomonion on a salt bagel is simple and wonderful. I prefer the Arcata location, but with that being said, it's the same great product served here. Their bagels are the best and their cream cheese is good. The morning after a 10pm arrival in Humboldt I found myself starving. My travel companion, an Arcata native, suggested we head over to Los Bagels in Eureka on our way to Ferndale and boy was I surprised. Whenever I go to New York I live off of bagels and lox so I was shocked to find a place that delivered NY-quality deli goods in the middle of sleepy Eureka. The bagels were super fresh, GREAT lox, and the hummus there was as delicious as it was unique. So, this is my first yelp review and thought I would start off with one of my fav places to start out a Sunday morning ... although I do occasionally drop in during the week as well. I first stumbled upon Los Bagels in high school (late 1980's) and back then regularly ate the whole wheat bagels with cc and walnuts & raisins. Years later I am still a regular and I am now all about the slug bagel with just about anything on it ... Everything from breakfast bagels to the Cucumbin (cc with cumcbers and local Larrupins dill mustard) to plain cc and local Mad a River Farms blackberry jam. Couple this with a cup of their mexican mocha and your day will be off to a good start! I highly rec'd Los Bagels and often take of town guests to either the Eureka or Arcata shop. In addition to the many bagel choices and the wonderful selection of traditional and not so traditional toppings, they also offer breads and pastries. My kids favorites are the Chango Bar plus the Sticky Bun is delicious! They offer seasonal/local fruit (peaches, huckleberries, strawberries and boysenberries) on their pastries, local jams and sauces and other local products, too! And during Passover, Hanukkah and Dia de Los Muertos they offer special holiday treats. Can't say enough good about this place which works to create and support community! I really love this bagel shop, and was happy to see it open for business. I've been in twice since the reopening in this pandemic. The first time, I saw that the person making my sandwich wasn't wearing gloves. I asked him to wear gloves and he complied. Today I went back, and there was a big line, and nobody behind the counter was wearing gloves. And I should have said something, that's on me. But I've also worked in similar coffee shops, and I have a difficult time saying or doing anything that would embarrass the workers, and so I said nothing. That was wrong of me, because this is a public safety issue. Instead, I took the bagel I paid for and threw it out. This is food service. They should be wearing gloves anyway. I don't know how they could think it's okay not to wear gloves when handling food during a pandemic. I rarely, RARELY leave yelp reviews, but this is important. PLEASE, management, tell your employees to wear gloves. I've done this job, it's not an impossible ask. As for me, I won't be back during this pandemic. I don't eat bagels much anymore - carbohydrates, don't you know - but when I get a bagel craving Los Bagels is there to help. Give me a toasted jalapeno bagel with half hummus and half guacamole, a cup of coffee or a bottle of Martinelli's apple juice, a newspaper, and a seat by the window, and I'm a happy camper. The bagels are as good as any you're likely to find in California, and the spreads are good too. Not quite up to the standard of my benchmark bagel joint, the Bagelry in Santa Cruz, but Los Bagels fills the bagel niche more than adequately. Nice pastries too! read more
