Parking: They do valet but you can find parking in the area, just maybe a walk since it's a residential area. I made reservations for the counter so we can watch the chef's in action. this place has a very large footprint, lots of tables and high ceilings, it felt really welcoming. They have a large patio area in the back and highchairs, so kid friendly (just be careful of the cactus!). We ordered the shrimp empanadas, Elotes asado and the branzino. Everything was amazing, the elotes asado is a bit spicy (it was actually very spicy for me but not for my husband). The shrimp empanada was really good, it was very crispy/light and the filling was very delicious. The branzino was fresh, flaky and flavorful. Because we sat at the counter, we saw the other items going out, like the fish tower, it looked so good, topped with uni. We want to try that next time. Loreto is a wonderful elevated Mexican mariscos restaurant nestled in an interesting semi-industrial area of Elysian Valley in LA. Think quaint Baja style home turned restaurant, there are bottles of tequila adorned throughout the server and full bar area. We were seated on the patio, with plenty of natural greenery. I felt like we were at a backyard party. Decorations outside were a bit sparse, but it looked like there are plans to expand out more into the space, perhaps private event space? Our server Joaquin was very attentive and prompt. We quickly ordered our drinks along with starters and our main dishes. The menu choices for the night:6 oysters with aguachiles 6 Baja oysters, toro sashimi, negro aguachiles, papaya ceviche, tostada bang bang, empanadas de camarón, elote asado, and pesca del dia. Between the two oysters the ones seasoned with the aguachiles was by far the best. Very citrus forward and well rounded with a sprig of cilantro. Nothing needed to be added to these oysters! The Baja oysters were delicious, don't get me wrong, but our hearts go to the ones with the aguachiles. Toro sashimi was so tender and fresh. It just melts in your mouth. The chili sauce it was bathed in was a well balance of just a hint of spice, citrus and peppers that complimented well with the toro. Probably the best Toro we've had. The Negro Aguachiles came with fresh made tostadas and packaged crackers. These were very well prepared, and came with plenty of shrimp. Although very worsteshire forward. We do prefer more citrus flavor for aguachiles but we did clean the plate. Next came the papaya ceviche, a take on Thai papaya salad with scallops served with tostadas. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS. Has a bit of heat for those who might not stand well with spice. If it had some chopped peanuts on top, this would be taken over the top. A MUST ORDER! Tostada Bang Bang! OMG - take the best fried shrimp taco in LA and just make it a tostada and....perfection! It's topped high with shrimp and order one for yourself, because you'll probably regret having to share! Empanadas de Camarón: delicious creamy white citrus sauce. There was just enough to keep the dough from drying out your mouth but also not making the dough soggy. Healthy amount of shrimp, although compared to the other sauces the cream sauce was a bit lower on the bar compared to the other dishes. Still worth a buy! Nothing was left unturned on that plate. Elote Asado: WOW! WOW! WOW! Growing up in LA you grow up on elote, but THIS! Out of this world. We loved and were pleasantly surprised by the perfect balance of roasted corn and fresh uni with all the traditional flavors of LA elote. Although I would have enjoyed a bit of spice from some chili powder. Even if it was offered on the side for guests to add on to their liking. Otherwise DO NOT skip out on ordering this dish! Last but not least the Pesca Del Dia which for tonight was grilled branzino. The fish was grilled to perfection! Just enough char to give a nice crispy crunch on the thin portions of the skin, but leaving the meat of the fish tender. Let's just say this fish was picked clean. The seasoning and sauce was ON POINT! It did not disappoint. It came with sides of rice, black beans, quesadillas, red and green salsas, pickled red onions, blue tortillas, and sliced avocado. We wish the rice was given more love as it didn't leave much of an impression. Don't be afraid to get a little dirty and use your hands to get through the fish. Note: not all the bones are completely cleaned out so be weary when consuming. Especially closer to the edge, tail and head of the fish. We were pleasantly impressed with all the food and ambiance Loreto had to offer. This place really missed the mark for me. Everything was over sauced and over complicated, and I walked away not really having a good grasp on what anything actually tasted like. The branzino was good, but served with quesadillas and tortillas? The aquachile and crudo were too overpowering, and not refreshing enough. The tagliatelle and cavatelli noodles were amazing, but they totally lost in the sauce among conflicting flavors once again. Everything was just trying way too hard to be elevated and complex. I was shocked when I looked through the reviews and saw 2 others reporting the same thing. This place IS very cute. Well designed building and bar. Drinks are solid. I enjoyed the milk punch, a friend loved the spicy margarita, nice wine selection. The food was...okay. The sashimi was excellent, no doubt. The sweet potato botana was tasty. The branzino was acceptable but had a few bones and 'just okay' flavor. The blue corn tortillas and quesadillas were super bland, prob the worst thing we had. The rice was dry/not properly cooked. I liked the beans and the salsas, however. Good chips, too. Service was great. Sadly, the oyster incident brings it down to 1 star. In some ways, you're always rolling the dice with oysters, but repeated incidents seems sketchy. We finally made it to Loreto after hearing a few mixed reviews and were pleasantly surprised by our experience. You wouldn't expect to find such a beautiful restaurant in a predominantly residential area. The restaurant itself is lovely to behold and features extensive bar seating for informal dining and drinking while there is both indoor and outdoor seating. We ordered four dishes: Magdalena Ceviche of Yellowtail,, honeydew, cucumber, Maui onion and jalapeno pepper Guaymas Ceviche of bay scallop, habanero-carrot mousse, and mango Mixta Tostada of shrimp, ceviche, scallop, avocado and salsa negra Cavatelli pasta (homemade) with clams, manchego cheese, nopales, and Spanish chorizo I don't mind heat in my food and generally prefer it. However the Magdalena ceviche was borderline too hot for our taste. The flavors were great and the portion plentiful but just too much heat. One would think the Guaymas ceviche with its habanero mousse would be even hotter but it wasn't. It too was pretty spicy but I was able to handle it better than my wife. Both dishes came with tostadas on the side (which makes me wonder what is the difference between their ceviche and the tostada dishes which is rhetorical) for which we asked for a few more to finish these dishes. The Mixta tostada was also fine and generous and came on a mound of salsa negra. The difficulty restaurants that serve seafood in this manner generally experience is making dishes that are unique and flavored differently when you're basically using the same handful of fishes each time. However, Loreto does a fine job of differentiating their offerings with unique spices and varied other ingredients. For us, personally, it just seems to be easier to eat these presentations with the tostada on the side rather than underneath the concoction so maybe stick with the ceviches. The final dish, the cavatelli, was by far our favorite of the four dishes. The pasta had a terrific texture complimented by the nopales. Whatever the cheese sauce was had us swooning and the use of clams for this dish was brilliant. We had one spicy margarita ($18) and a beer ($12) and our check out the door with a 20% tip was $167.00. The margarita was very good but the portion was rather disappointing. A few random observations: they don't add-on fees for the kitchen staff or for healthcare which, for me, is always an aggravation. Why not just charge more for your menu items to provide these benefits than stick your hand out to the patrons? Just my personal pet peeve. Another pet peeve are exorbitant valet parking fees. Here at Loreto they charge $15.00 (and I don't let anyone park my car for me) which I think is excessive. With a $3.00 tip I could of had another one of those awesome, but skimpy, margaritas! Just kidding but you know where I'm coming from. read more

Came in right when they opened and were seated right away. The space is open and has a lot of indoor and outdoor seating. Parking is valet only but you can get lucky with street parking. We ordered tostada, crispy rice, scallop skewer, and the pulpo plate. Everything was so yummy but the stand out was the pulpo. Omg I've never had octopus so tender and melt in your mouth like that. It also came with a big side of beans and rice and little quesadillas so I was stuffed by the end of it but I would come back with a bigger party next time to share everything and try other things. Found this place thanks to Infatuation LA! Got a reservation for seats at the ceviche bar. They also had open seating at the regular bar area. Service was super friendly and the food was REALLY good. For two people, we got the tuna tostada and the branzino, and we were stuffed. The branzino comes with so much food. Value is excellent. You get tons of sides with a delicious fish. Definitely could've fed three people. The only thing I'd say is the milkpunch was a bit too sweet to me. Just personal preference. It looked really beautiful, though. If you like sweeter cocktails, that one's for you! I really want to come back and try their desserts. For parking, they have valet or street parking is in a residential area. Food was so delicious. We had the rojo aguachile, papaya ceviche, tostada bang bang, atun picante and the branzino. Wow! So amazing everything. Rojo Aguachile: spicy, the flavor of the juice it's mixed in is spicy and flavorful definitely ordering this again. The papaya ceviche: if I thought the Rojo was spicy, this dish is even spicier and so so good. The thin slices of papaya are so yummy with the scallops. Atun picante: wow, we almost missed this one but thanks to our waitress for recommending this and it was well well worth it. This dish alone satisfied all the textures and flavors you'd want in a dish named atun picante. All the food was delicious and spicy and flavorful. I'm not used to restaurant actually making their food spicy, but they lived up to it and we loved every dish we ordered. We also had the oysters preparados the dressing is a green spicy aguachile. Very spicy and made the oyster taste even better. We did want to finish with a nice cup of coffee and some churros but unfortunately their coffee machine was down so we skipped out on the churros completely. No dessert here. There is street parking (scarce) they have valet for $13. Decor is very intimate and calm, outside is just as beautiful as the inside. read more

This was our first visit to Loreto and it was some of the best Baja Mexico seafood we have ever had. We were seated by Sasha, who got us a great table in the patio and was as accommodating as can be. Our waiter, Joey, explained the menu and was spot on with each dish's attributes. The entire wait staff was super friendly, very professional and helped make our special night out memorable. The Aguachile Negro started our meal off and almost got a standing ovation from us. The Bang Bang shrimp was a beautiful, exotic, flavorful dish. The papaya ceviche is very spicy, which I LOVE, and so delicious that I can already tell I will need another visit soon. Wow! The chef is beyond talented. We had the Meringue with strawberries and raspberries for dessert and it tasted like heaven. I can't believe Loreto has only been open a few months, but we will be shouting its praises all over town so that everyone knows about this hidden gem. DON'T EAT THE OYSTERS. My girlfriends and I did a group dinner here the evening of 9/30. Four out of the eight of us ate oysters, and five days later - one of us is currently in the hospital getting an ultrasound and CT scan on their stomach, and three of us are still having awful gastro issues (I'll save you the gory details). The experience I had was incredibly traumatic. I started getting stomach cramps late in the evening of 10/1 and I proceeded to vomit violently every 15-30 minutes for 5 straight hours (11:30pm-4:30am). I thought something was seriously wrong, and I was another hour or two away from dragging myself to the ER. Three of my friends are mothers of young children and this has been a hugely difficult week for them. I didn't want to take this public because I'm a neighbor and understand that sh*t happens (too soon?), but the restaurant doesn't provide any way to contact them via their site... no phone number or email. I have no doubt we weren't the only patrons who had the same experience. Because of this, I'm writing reviews to warn future diners and my friends and I have submitted reports to the LA Health Department. UPDATE: The hospital visit my friend made confirmed she did have food poisoning. And symptoms continued until 10/9 for two people in our party (including myself). read more

The interior is beautiful, and the ambiance is nice. The dishes are unique with delicious flavor pairings. Although I definitely think there are more mediocre dishes than beyond amazing ones. We also told them that we found a piece of hard sharp plastic in one of our tostadas. They didn't say or do anything about it, oh well. I was not impressed with the service. I got FOOD POISONING here last weekend and so did my partner. We shared the oysters, tuna tostada, and scallop tostada. I was supposed to host a Thanksgiving for 15 friends and I've been sick all week. I'm very upset about it. I would highly recommend NOT DINING HERE. See the review from September where 4 people got food poisoning from the oysters as well. I wish I had read the reviews before coming. Not much alcohol in it (I don't drink much so if I don't feel it, it's weak. Ordered to toro sashimi. Good quality, small portion, strong dark sauce. We got dish I forgot the name, circular little pile of seafood, shrimp. Etc. a bit fishy. 2 nondescript thin flaky crackers. Another dish, bang bang shrimp tostada was good. Finally, a shrimp (I think. Couldn't tell? ) empanada... not good. Just a lot of dough barely any filling. Reserved a table for 6 to celebrate a friend's birthday. Got seated promptly when everyone was here. Loved the atmosphere on the outside patio. They had these mushroom shaped lamp to make reading the menu possible. So cute! There were also plenty of heat lamps to keep us warm. Ordered food to share and our favorites were the tostado Kondo with scallops and branzino zarandeados! So delicious! The other foods were good too but these two stood out the most. We brought a cake to cut for our friend's birthday and asked to keep it in their fridge. We were charged $4 per person for the service (storing, cutting and plating). The lobster portion was more like a muse bouche and the beef was inedible. We ate none of the beef and returned it they credited us 30% of the dish which was uncool. Honestly looking at exterior of this simple/plain clay colored building , you would be shocked as you step into a beautiful oasis. Had a very negative experience at this restaurant. My wife and I who live in the NYC area were visiting my daughter who lives in Silver Lake last August and she made reservations at Loreto because she liked the food and setting. We had early outdoor reservations and the restaurant was not very crowded. After we arrived we were led to a table way in the back touching some shrubs even though there were closer empty tables. My wife and I are elderly, the other patrons I saw were youngish, and I got a feeling of age discrimination, something I never felt before at a restaurant. Then oddly enough my daughter almost jokingly vocalized what I was thinking. We sat down at the table next to the shrubs and to make matters worse there were wasps flying around us and my daughter is afraid of wasps and bees. We called over a waiter and told him we wanted to sit at another table away from the wasps. There appeared to be plenty of empty tables. He nonchalantly said he'd see what he could do but didn't return so we left the restaurant.
